Contacts Recovery - Touch Pro CDMA

I'm just going out on a limb here so I thought I would ask some of the experts. It's been a long time since I flashed a rom on my TP and I just recently decided to try a new rom out. I didn't back up my contacts before I flashed and now I have an empty list (obviously). Please spare me the "should have could have" because I've already beat myself up over it for a few days now trying to search high and low for any backups I may have done. Unfortunately I can't find any. Is there any possible way to recover these contacts whether it be some kind of forensics software or paying someone or anything. Money is no object and I am in desperate need of my contacts to be restored.
I've also searched for possibilities that I may have backed them up on my storage card at one time, but from the looks of it there isn't really an easy way to back them up so I doubt I would have done that. Is there a way to check if I did that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated if help can be offered at all. Thank you for your time.

I am very sorry to say that after a ROM flash, it is not possible to recover things from internal memory. If it were on the storage card, it could have been (possibly) possible. I am really sorry to say that, as I've gone through the same thing a long time ago.

Thank you for your response. I do appreciate the information even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear (lol). Do you happen to know the process of checking to see if any contacts were ever placed on the storage card or would they have appeared in my list after the flash?

Well here are two freeware file recovery programs (not tested by me) that I found that you could search your card for deleted stuff.
Just to be clear, these are for the PC, plug in the micro sd card with a card reader.

hope these help,

dwizzy,
Thank you for your attempt in helping me recover my contacts. Unfortunately after countless hours of research I have determined that there is indeed no possible way to recover my contacts. I have no backup of them anywhere. I do appreciate the effort you provided and I will continue to make sure I take all precautions when doing a rom flash in the future. Have a great week!
Thanks,
Mick

MicroDrives are sensitive to presuure; when you were rising or descending, the change in pressure could have caused the damage.
recommendation: turn off the device for take-off and landing.
My buddy had a similar problem with his. His MicroDrive stopped working. WMStorage didn't fix the issue either. He was running the original ROM that came with the device and some software, nothing more. The only thing that brought back the drive was to do a hard reset, then flash the factory ROM back onto the device. I've had issues with the drive myself so run everything off of my SD Card and only use the MicroDrive for temporary storage or backups of my SD Card. This sucks that we can't trust the drive. Just makes me nervous using it.
agreed! I'd rather prefer 4gig flash memory to a 8gig unsafe microdrive.
but it's all about marketing issues
very true..all my data was lost...i guess it ISS becuz of the rise in pressure and all that,..but my microdrive izz up and working again..!
My microdrive had corrupted twice before, and I had thought that using the miniSD would completely solve the problem. I was wrong.
Yesterday, my genuine Toshiba miniSDHC lost everything on it. I could not recover it with Pocket Mechanics Professional. Soft reset does not help, as it did previously. I don't know if this was caused my the repeated removal and insertion if card which performed in attempting to fix my SIP selection problem.
The lessen for me is, do a regular backup to PC and do not take out and put in the card without switching off the device.
I still have not reinstalled my applications and data yet because today is the day to upgrade my Dopod to WM6. I'm really looking forward to the upgrade. I expect some of my applications to be dumped for compatibility reason, not in the end I'd have a transformed and better computer.
Htc Advantage Microdrive Failure
I want to add my voice to the concerns raised regarding the much sung about MicroDrive with 8GB.
I have lost all the data I installed and stored on the MicroDrive. I had photos, documents - some of them work related and do not have them anywhere at all.
Does anyone have any idea how I can undelete or recover these?
By the way, I did not delete them, they were simply gone!
Please help.

Try to use WMStorage which will allow the drive/s to be recognized under Windows as an external storage drive. Then get yourself a copy of Ontrack Easy Recovery and use that to recover the lost files. I've never had to recover files from my MD or SD yet on my phone but my cousin had a camera that did something like this....all pictures just dissappeared and I used the program and got back stuff he forgot about that had been looooong gone. Works well. Hope this helps
curious?

Thanks ltxda, I will try your advice right away.
YOSEFE.
Thanks ltxda for pointing me to WMStorage. I downloaded and installed the software. My Devive and the Microdrive are recognised as you stated.
However, the only hitch I hit is the cost of Ontrack Easy Recovery, is there no free reliable recovery software somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation.

Not sure if there is a free trial available or not. You may want to check their site. I just have a copy since I purchased one for work. You can also go to www.download.com and try one of the other recovery software trials from there. I'm sure there are a few there that may help or you could try alternate resources.

I agree with you. Makes me sick that I have this EXPENSIVE device and don't have enough trust in the one feature they pushed because of the constant problems.
Have some questions for you:
- How were you transferring files to the MD? ActiveSync, Vista or WMStorage?
- Would you mind posting the resolution here in case others have the same problem?

Care to share your solution mate.
just use the
sorry guys been busy at work, i didnt really fix it without losing my data. i just used the restore microdrive option and then re-format it, lost all my data but at least its working. lol. still pissed off though.
i fiqured some bits out though, wether your using active sync or wm5torage 1.75 and your transfering huge amount of data at once windows then give an error cant complete , cant find drive source.
So I had to do all the restore microdrive thing again but was just testing why it happen the first time.
good thing to do is to use wm5torage 1.75 to transfer but only transfer some amount and wait for awhile and continue.
File Scavenger
File Scavenger is much cheaper for recovering files. It works perfectly for me. The demo is a teaser. It works but doesnot let you recover files. It shows that it can recover the files.

Touch Pro from Sprint is bricked by HTC hotfix

Hi,
this seems to be the right place for the question, but I'm sure the answer will be applicable to other phone. Assuming there is going to be an answer
Stupidly, yours truly downloaded and installed hotfix from here http://www.htc.com/www/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=140&act=sd&cat=all in the hopes of improving audio quality. Well, this apparently was not meant for CDMA (or US phones). After installing the phone rebooted and got stuck at the Touch Pro screen where it lists FW/SW versions in red towards the bottom. The phone can not get past that point no matter what I do (reset, battery remove/replace) or how long I wait (overnight). Sprint 'suggested' hard reset (thank you very much) and HTC said they have no fix for that either. Well, if you have not guessed it already, I have not backed up the data on that phone. Ever.
Not smart
The phone was running stock SF/FW before. I have not had time to mess with it.
US$64K question is: Could I retrieve the phone book? Any other data that was not on SD card (that one is safe)? Is there a chance to recover data AFTER hard reset? Anything else the smart folk out there can recommend?
Thanks a lot in advance.
try flashing via SD card
If its stuck at the bootloader mode (the tri color screen) i thing its possible to flash it via SD card.
there is plenty of info around or check out the Raphael wiki.
There is a chance it is not bricked.
(i seriouslly doubt is it because the HTC hotfix cannot do that)
Let me know if you need any more help my email me at hotmail
best regards.... Erik
The screen looks like this: http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h15/cadillacjew/TP-1.jpg
with some test indicating SW/ROM etc versions in RED at the bottom. If it is important I can upload the picture of it.
Also may take you up on your offer. Need those contacts, otherwise I'm so screwed
I dunno, it sounds like you're going to need a hard reset. That will fix the problem, I'm sure. Have you tried connecting by active sync? I'm 99.999% positive it won't work, but it wouldn't hurt to at least try and see if you can pull pim.vol off of it. Also, you might download ceregeditor (just google it) and install it on your pc, and see if you can dump the registry from the phone. But I have a bad feeling you're screwed.
Is this really the end of the road?
Yes, I (and Sprint store that I went to) tried connecting the phone via usb and it was not even recognized as a device. Hard reset sounds goo, but it will erase the data. Before I take that drastic measure I'd like to make sure there is nothing else I could do.
I'm willing to pay some money to a forensics company to extract the data, but can not find one that looks trustworthy and experienced when it comes to Win mobile phones. Any recommendations, btw?
I have no clue; you might try one of the rom dumping procedures. I think that some may dump the rom and all the info on the phone; I've never done it myself (well, I've played with grab_it on another device, with little success). I believe that some will dump all the info on the phone (rom + stuff in main memory). But I can't tell you how to do it, I'm afraid, and I have no clue if it will work on your phone.
You can check these tools-maybe there's something there.
Most likely everything is gone.
I have to sadly agree. This sounds like something only a hard reset would fix.
Any possibility of data recovery after hard reset? Anybody knows of a way to that? Of course this is wishful thinking on my part, but I'm pretty desperate now.

Unfortunately, it seems that you are stuck. I do not know of any way to recover your data if the device is stuck on bootloader since, as you pointed out, the device does not get recognized by the computer.
Anything that you do at this point might end up making things worse if you are not careful. Just cut your losses and hard reset the device.
its not in booloader mode, dumping the ROM sounds like a good and only way to go, try it, it wont hurt you, if that dont work i'd say its pretty much dead with no way to recover it, unless the info is unrecoverable (spell?) hard reset it.....
best regards. Erik
The only issue with your suggestion is that I'm no longer in possession of the phone. I had to leave it in the Sprint store in order to walk out with working phone. I can go back to the store and try to get the data off of my old phone. They are holding it for me.
However, I need to know what to do exactly and be able to do it quickly. So if there are easy to follow instructions that you can point me to, please do so.
Also after dumping ROM what data will I have?
TIA for all your help.
your data will be gone but try putting a raphimg.nbh file on the memory card then holding power and volume down while hitting the reset button, that will flash you off the mem card. good luck. Ive had to do this several times due to bad flashes and vista issues. Oh and as an added thought start using microsoft myphone to back up your data in the future.
Thanks for your suggestion. I will try this in a week or so when I'm back in town.
Also myphone is something that should work. I actually did not know about it until this past Monday. I have not looked at any MS-based backup solutions because I'm not using their software, if I can avoid it. So while I have a Windows PC I do not have Outlook installed and thus have never given my phone a chance to sync up. Kind of silly, I know.
I had bitpm installed on another system that went bad. I've replaced it with a new one, retrieved other files and data, but forgot about Bitpm folder
So few lessons learned ...
Thanks again to all who provided feedback.
It sucks if you lost everything, but you should be able to put your phone in bootloader and connect it to your pc through usb. The only question is if you can dump the rom that way and if you can dump all the files on it with the rom. The only problem is that some of the rom dumping methods (like with pdocread, I think) require you to transfer a file to your \windows directory, which you're not going to be able to do. It's a long shot at best.
I back up my pim stuff 3 different ways-I think you want to do it in multiple ways just to be safe. My main method is using sk tools and its backup tool. You can separately back up the pim database and the messaging databases (not as important to me). You can also back up email accounts with sk tools (using the pim information tool). These are my main backups, and I keep them on my sd card, and occasionally transfer them to a hard drive (it's not that big of a deal if the hard drive backup is a month out of date to me). I also use Pimbackup 2.8, and store that on my sd card (and hard drive). I don't use it for restoring anymore, because it's pretty slow with 6.5 roms in my experience. Finally, I have a file backup mortscript that I use that backs up user data for various apps; I use it to restore the data after flashes. Anyway, included in the script is a command to copy pim.vol to my sd card. I never restore my pim files by copying pim.vol back to main memory, but I like having it saved just in case, and it doesn't take any time to run the script (FYI-all your contacts, tasks and calendar stuff is stored in pim.vol, which is on the root of your device). Anyway, I feel like my pim databases are pretty safe-it would take an awful lot of bad things to happen for them to be lost, and I'd probably be dead in half of those scenarios, lol.
You're going to lose everything. The phone will not boot and as a result, all your data is unrecoverable. Next time, use a back up solution like Google Sync.
Do a hard-reset on it and you should be good to go. Turn the phone off, hold the volume down key, the center dpad key, and then hold the power button. It'll come up to a screen with hard reset instructions. Push the volume up key here. It'll be ready to go like it's brand new out of the box.
Lost everything, but .... happy
Hi,
thanks to everyone who replied. Just wanted to post and update so we can close this thread.
As I indicated before, Sprint has replaced my phone with Touch Pro 2 when I came to them with this problem. They did it beacuse they no longer have loaner phones and because I was about to go on 10 day business trip.
After using the new phone for 2 weeks, I got to tell you that this one is a leap forward compare to the the old. So I'm happy with new device, installing software and trying to recreate my Address Book by dumping my friends and family's data via Bluetooth. Backing up using MyPhone and about to install Outlook (not going to use it for anything else but the backup)
Also, I finally went to Sprint store and asked them one more time if they can think of any other way to recover the data. I even mentioned bootloader. They did not know/could not do it. I asked them to hard reset and after few tries the phone was restored to it's original state. Not a trace of my data .
Would be nice if in the future I could save contacts (and other data) directly to SD card. IMO it will give better chance of recovery, but I'm not sure it is possible.
Again thanks to all who tried to help. Much appreciated.
Same problem sort of
I tried to load Energy Rom 28005 and now can't get pro to do any thing but restart every 15 seconds or so. any ideas on what can be done? tia.

SD card problem (not recogized on phone or pc)

Relatively new to XDA, so your patience is appreciated if I'm asking a complete noob question, but I have searched and come up empty. Basically, the thread title says it all. Neither my Eris nor my laptop recognize that an SD card is present. Now, I would figure the solution would simply be to reformat the card, but how can I reformat if I can't even get either device to recognize it?
Again, I'm sorry if this is a noob issue. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Anyone
The only time this has ever happened to me was when my microsd had a small crack in it. I had to bend it a little to be able to tell if it was there or not, but the crack made the entire card useless. If you don't have a crack or anything like that, i'm not sure what else it could be... sorry.
I found a program to help me out with this problem. Took me a couple hours of research to find it, but hopefully it'll work just fine.
So, did it work?
No it didn't work. I know what caused my problem, though. My cousin (it's actually her Eris) is only 9 and didn't know that you had to unmount the card or power down the phone before removing it. I don't know how many times she did it, but I'm pretty certain that's what corrupted the card. I've given her one of mine until I can get it sorted out, so I'm still open to suggestions.

Tmobile gs3 has problem w/ external storage, im rooted so cant return it? I need Help

Alright guys, I noticed today that my Titanium Backups aren't on my mount/extsd storage, and I tried to change the backup location under preferences, but it wouldn't allow me. While checking my sd card I noticed the only file stored on it is my pictures? I tried downloading apps to sd in an attempt to move titanium backup, and that's when I realized I have a serious issue I believe. I was given a message when apps to sd opened that said, "this device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated"? Whatever the hell that means by emulated I don't know? The sd card was working in the last phone I used it in.
Biggest problem is that I'm rooted, so I can't return it under warranty! At least I can't to my knowledge. I'm in serious need of some help here, I purchased the phone at the T mobile retail store, so I don't know if I can sneak it past them somehow, or if I should maybe just (it hurts to say it) brick it on purpose, and pull the old" it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on" routine?
Please guys, any and all advice will be much appreciated!
Before doing anything drastic, have you thought about maybe reformatting the SD card first? If that doesn't work then try another SD card (they do go bad you know). It sounds like something that should be easy to fix. Whatever you do please don't brick it on purpose. It's not anyone's fault that your device is now acting up after rooting it. At least do them a solid and ODIN back to stock, then try to return it if that's the case.
Hi,
You should read this thread. It should shed some light on your external SD card problem and provide a couple of methods to get around it.

Yes I did format it to no avail, and I'm headed home soon where I'll try a different sd card. I don't want to brick the device, and I've had to unroot and return a phone before because of a hardware issue with the screen that wasn't my fault. The problem with doing that in this situation is that I don't believe there's a way to unroot it and go back to the stock recovery or reset the binary flash counter. As far as you saying it's not anyone's fault, it sure is my friend and it's not mine! I had a Galaxy s4g that wouldn't read an sd card two days after I got it & I had to return it. So, as far as being no one's fault, not true... It would be Samsungs fault, and rooting it had nothing to do with it. If I broke a device because of my own foolishness or stupidity, I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER try to exchange it! The entire basis of my spirituality is based on karma and I would suck it up & pay for my mistake but maintain my peace of mind. This however, I am not at fault for, and I shouldn't be responsible for faulty hardware just because I obtained root access.

Okay I've read the links and this is very odd??? I need to hear from someone with the gs3 that they've also discover that they're phone recognizes & reads the sd card, but will not allow apps to write to it. PLEASE, someone check this and help me out here!
I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF ALL Gs3's DO THIS, OR IF I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RETURN TO STOCK & EXCHANGE IT?
Sorry for the frustration, but I just spent a heck of a lot of money here, and this is a very aggravating problem....
My TB backs up to the ext SD. I had the same problem you did. Too bad I can't actually remember what I did. :crying:
When you go into TB and try to select storage location...nothing comes up but the internal?
I think I manually moved the TB folder from the internal to the external...then went back into TB to select the location...then selected the Detect button...and it came up with a list of folders that I could choose.
It went something like that. Hope that sheds some light...(sorry I cant remember exactly)
FYI...the ext SD folder is under mnt/extSD...or something like that.
I forget to mention something else guys. I am able to copy & paste my Titanium Backups as well as any other files to the sd card. So, the phone recognizes it, and it will write to external sd if I manually copy things there, but it will not allow any third party apps to write to external sd? I also cannot move apps to the sd card? This is a HUGE pain in the ass! I bought the 16gb model because that's all the retailer I my area had, so the sd card is a necessity for me. If I'm downloading torrents or other large files this could be a problem. I'm really wondering if this isn't just my phone?
It'd be great if someone here with the skills could port this mod for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433436
It basically makes the phone think that the external is the internal...and all files downloaded from the browsers or whatever app that doesn't allow sd access...to go directly to external.

Sorry nothing! THANK YOU! I was like 3/4 of the way to that idea, I had already copied the file, but I was just thinking maybe if I deleted the internal file, maybe now it will follow the one I copied to the mount/extsdstorage? I can't thank you enough for just confirming that this isn't a problem specific to my model. I think that this problem should be explained to everyone & stickied. This is a seriously confusing situation. Ppl who don't root or come to XDA won't have any idea why they're music, videos, or anything from third party apps aren't going to their sd cards? Some ppl may not even realize it? I don't know if it's been mentioned in another thread here yet, but I couldn't find anything in our forums about it, and I've been trying to figure out what was going on all day. I still don't understand what the hell it meant about emulated storage?

All stock Samsung Galaxies S3 do this. Google in their infinite wisdom is locking down apps so they can not write to an external card that can infect other devices.
Problem is we all want more control with our external cards and there are a lot of unhappy campers with this new "feature". Gamers are especially concerned because they can not install their games to the external card to free up more space.
This is a real strong reason to buy the 32gb model and not the 16gb. One could take the stance that they are forcing us to pay a higher premium for our storage when we purchase the phone.
As I said you can do the work around with directory bind until:
1. A dev comes up with a a patch
2. You install a custom Rom like Cm9 that has patched out this security policy.
Never mind... Now that I'm using better keywords to describe the problem, and searching outside of just the US variants forum, I'm finding threads... I feel like an idiot now! Some folks are talking as if this is better? I don't see it though. I did a nandroid after root, and it only left me with around 8gb or so with my apps installed. I know its faster memory than an sd card, but it's kind of a pain. I hope I never need to download anything bigger than 8gb... Doubtful ill need my phone for anything that big though.
Sorry for freaking out and making a big deal out of this issue, but I thought my device was defective, and I wasn't using good search terms. I should have been able to figure this out without cluttering things with a two Page thread.

Yes, I really wish I could take it back and pay the difference for the 32gb, but with being rooted its really not feasible. I was browsing XDA on my phone also, and I didn't even catch the link in your first post, I was only reading the links I your second post, lol. I really feel like a dummy here since my question was almost immediately answered. Also, the browser can act a little wonky sometimes on XDA. As soon as I made it home to my desktop, I was looking over the thread & knocking my forehead against the screen!
Yeah...but if someone could modify that script for our phones...(I personally use it on my Transformer...and til this day...has been perfect.)
Sorry for freaking out and making a big deal out of this issue,

Actually you are bringing up a valid concern and one of the first to do it in this section of the US version of the S3, my hat off to you!
It would be good idea to have a stickied thread in general that addresses this. That way ppl will be well aware of how to work around it. And yes, a patch for this would be great, because some may prefer things this way, and alot will prefer the previous standards. I for one don't like this one bit!
Put a stock rom on it and go into the store. Tell them you're having issues, they can order one on their end and send it out to you.
I would know. I worked there.

[Q] Battery pulled out during factory reset

Hello,
I'm writing this as a last refuge to console myself. I got caught up in a dangerous situation today in which I had to give up my android phone i.e. Motorola Atrix 2 in order to save my life. Since all my personal and official data was stored on the sd card, which I couldn't pull out from the phone, I had activated the factory reset - including sd card formatting - before handing it over. As luck would have it, I was pressurized to give it up before the process finished so in a bid to save the data from getting into the wrong hands, I pulled out the battery while it was erasing data from the sd card according to the dialog box. My questions is: What are the chances of the sd card getting corrupted and the data becoming inaccessible? I need to know as I'm under a lot of stress because of it and there's no chance of getting it back. I had changed my google account's password the moment I reached home (after fifteen to twenty minutes) so I also the phone would have locked out. Please respond at the earliest.
Thanks.
It probably deleted some files depending on how long the dialog was up. From my past experiences sometimes I got a corrupt card (very rare) and sometimes a few files were deleted. The only thing you can do from this point is to actually check and see it any damage was done.

It was up for 30 seconds to a minute. May be a little more. What do you think?
How much difference does it make if I change my Google account's password?

Could be a lot of data was deleted but it shouldn't be corrupt as far as I know just most likely completely formatted. So yea, tell you carrier that you don't have the phone anymore. The person who took your phone will just have to create his own Google account afterwards. Call the cops? They could trace the number and whatnot. I guess I didn't understand what I was reading the first time I read the post, you were held at life or death to give up your phone? That sounds horrifying, I'm sorry.

Being an ordinary citizen, I don't have such luxuries available in my country so I have to do pretty much everything myself. I was and it's been a terrible experience - mostly just because of my data. If he logs in from another Google account on my phone, will he be able to access my apps/contacts? I had taken the battery and sim out while it was factory resetting so he'd be asked to sign-in again, right?
Thanks a lot for your response.

Really sorry to hear that!
Quite shocked as well
Well,if factory reset is complete which I believe shouldn't take upto 1 min [still, depends on your data, ]
Then,he'll have to sign in for sure!
If you've not backed up your contacts to Sd card and he doesn't know to recover it back, then you're contacts are safe!
However you should have probably tried not removing battery at that time [I know it's easier said than done, anyways I sincerely hope things go fine and also hope you are alright]
Take care

Yes, I'm still in shock and under a lot of stress.
Factory resetting hadn't completed and it was erasing sd card when I pulled the battery out hoping it would get corrupted. To see what happens in such a situation, I went to a friend's place today who has the same phone. We used his spare sd card of 4 gb (mine was 32gb with at least only twelve gbs free) to perform the same action. I started the factory reset with sd card formatting and pulled the battery out once it started erasing (didnt give it as much time as I had given to mine. After doing that I inserted the battery again and restarted the phone to check the sd card but it had corrupted although it didn't ask me for any gmail id. That's some relief but my card had larger storage so there are some doubts as well. *sigh*
I don't remember backing them up so I'm not sure.
I wish I could...
Thanks a lot, brothers. Do let me know what you think. Its very much appreciated.
You take care as well.
Apps and contacts data are linked to your Gmail so the guy shouldn't have access to any of your data without your Gmail account. Good news that the sd card got corrupt, at least it's safe to know there's a higher chance to know it corrupted or not.
If you backed up your contacts on sd card and he finds the vcard he will restore it into another android phone! I think the sd card will got corupted!

Good to know that! I agree. I'm just hoping everything and everyone remains safe...
Just to be 100% safe, I would change the password to all my major information first. Things that have to do with credit cards like PayPal or ebay. But since you factory reset the phone it also removed the pass code you had put in it (I'm almost certain it does). Just watch yourself is all I can say, watch your online activities to see if he has any of your info.
