Surfing with Notebook using the Hero - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am wondering if the Hero, or any kind of android Phone supports some sort of plug and surf function using the mobile Internet connection of the Phone over the USB cable plugged to a Windows PC.
Just like a HSDPA USB-Stick
I know that this is no Problem with my Windows Mobile Smartphone (Blackstone), but what about android?

Yes. Read the manual about HTC Sync.

or read the multiple threads in here about tethering....

short answer without doing it myself is...
you have to plug it in first so that the option is not greyed out
go to setttings - wireless settings - mobile network settings - mobile network sharing
turn it on
names of these menus might not be accurate...
this has been tested on a t-mobile g2 touch and works fine

How to run WiFi Tether

Hi All,
Bit new to tethering -
As I understand it, it will allow me to tether my laptop to my phone, and enable me to access the internet via my phone if I'm out of a regular WIfi
network. So if I'm in the middle of nowhere ( but have phone signal ) - I can access the net. and emails.
Also - may be possible to share files between phone & laptop ( not sure about this though ).
So on to the running problem.
If I start up WiFi Tether, I press the 'start' button, and in minute or so it appears on my laptop list of wifi networks - as G1 Tether.
When I select it I get a notification on my phone sayin ' Wireless ether Authorized ( connected ) '
On my laptop the usual WiFi symbol changes from its usual fan shaped stripes to a grey fan shape with what looks like a little white TV set inside it .
Thats as far as I get - email and web not working on my laptop.
Any ideas?
ps - on the Wifi Tether screen on my phone - it does indicate Down & Up traffic ( 43 kb & 56 kb ).
BTW your not alone I tried to tether and got the same connects fine, but no interent
Ok, I am very new to the wifi tethering thing (I got mine set up on Monday), but here's what I had to do in order to get online via wifi on my laptop through my phone. Under the security section of setup, I had to disable access-control. Once I did that, I was screaming on the internet. I am using a HTC Hero through Sprint.
I forgot to say that I had done that Muppet.....other than chosing the G1 tether network, did you have to do anything on your laptop - such as changing any network settings?
AFAIK the US Sprint version of the phone has had the standard tethering capability on the Hero disabled. So the only way to tether with a Sprint Hero is to get an app from the Market. Can't remember what it is called but a quick search of past posts in the Hero CDMA forum should easily find it, as it has been covered many times before. I don't know how that works because I have never needed it.
For those of us using the European Hero tethering on a PC (again don't know about Mac) should be easy and does not need any additional app from the Market. First make sure HTCSync is installed on your PC. Even if you do not use it to sync you still need it on the PC because it has the necessary drivers. Then connect the USB cable to both devices. Do not at this stage mount the USB. If it tries to sync automatically, just cancel that.
Then go into menu > settings > wireless controls. Scroll down to the bottom and the last item "Mobile Network Sharing" should now be available to you. Click on it and it should automatically make a connection to the PC which should show in your icon tray (may take a minute or so) with the usual wireless network connection symbol (2 little computer screens with a couple of arcs radiating). After that just use your browser or email programme and it should work fine.
Are you doing the above in the order set out? Is the Mobile Network Sharing option on the phone available or grayed out? What OS are you running on the laptop? It works fine with my Windows XP, but have heard of problems with Vista, and especially in 64bit.
One more thing. You do need to have 3G phone signal to make it work - GPS will take forever. And you obviously need data switched on on the phone.

[Q] Connect GT9100 to Internet through PC

Hello guys,
I'm sorry if the reply to my question was already posted by I was unable to find it here or through google search.
I'm new to the Android world so this might be very easy to achieve although I was unable to find it.
I'm trying to connect my SGS2 stock KE7 to the internet through my PC. I wanted to connect the phone with the data cable to a usb port on my laptop and then route all the traffic. I went through the options but couldn't find anythign that could achieve this.
Can someone, please, give me some pointers?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Just go in to wi-fi settings and set up a hotspot. Your phone now works as a "wireless router/modem" and your computer should detect your wi-fi hotspot created by the phone
I thought Wifi/usb Tethering was to allow other devices to connect to the internet through your phone.
computer -> phone -> internet
And I want to achieve the opposite, Connecting to the internet with my phone by going through a laptop/workstation.
phone -> computer -> internet

This is a bit off-topic, and I may have misunderstood your question, but this might be what you are looking to do -
1. Setup your computer in wifi adhoc sharing mode, so that any other wireless device can find that network.
2. Use your phone as the wifi device to connect to that network.
This is pretty easy - just setup a wifi network.
Many videos available on youtube -
Again, this is just one way of doing what I think you want to do-

What if wireless is not available?
Is it possible to reverse tether a phone to use a PC's internet connection via a USB cable?

Don't think that you can use the network over the usb cable it is not designed for that, may be someone else may know a bit more.
Theoretically a proxy agent app on pc should be able to do what you want above, over the usb cable, but it is better to use a wireless modem instead.

Ok, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I often find myself in the situation where I do not have phone signal or wireless available :-/
Maybe I should invest in a wireless access point to carry around with me!
Yeah, it's a pity. There are a couple of scenarios where this would be useful for me.
Thanks anyway for replying to my question.
AFAIK this a HTC sense only feature as i remember having this on my HTC desire
What I use is an Edimax Wireless USB adapter - EW-7711UAn. The hardware works really well, the software works well once it is set-up, but configuring XP to share its network connection through this is a bit tricky
This may help, I am sure there is similar for Vista Windows 7 around on the Internet

This might help you out guys!
Heres the explanation of how to do it (sorry it's in Portuguese, but google translator will do the trick!

[Q] Usb tethering

Any body tried the USB tethering of galaxy S2? seems like Samsung did not supply the proper drivers for it to work. I loved that feature in my desire HD as it preserves the battery of the phone( better than WiFi tethering) Any body got any idea on this? thanks....
Works for me
I have an unbranded KE7 SGS2 and USB tethering works fine for me:
Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot -> USB tethering (tick).
My XP-powered laptop then used this connection without any configuration or setup.
Mine's working fine as well.
Running KE7 on the phone, Windows 7 on the computer. Just plugged it in, the drivers installed automatically and it started working with no problems! (I'm actually posting this reply over the tethered connection).
this is really weird. My Gs2 usb tethering is not working in two of my laptops. both are working well with my desire hd. Can this be a hardware issue?
Works fine for me also...

Possibly, I would think a more likely explanation would be a problem with the USB drivers for your GS2.
It's a bit hard to say without looking at your computer. But if there was a problem with the phone, there would most likely be a lot more people reporting it. I'd say the problem is more likely on the computer end.
I might have the wrong end of the stick here, but I would like to use my laptop's broadband connection whilst in the office to use on my phone.
HTC Sense on my previous phone gave you the option when you plugged in the USB lead, does such a thing exist on the Samsung? Or even a 3rd party app that achieves the same goal?
Seems pointless using 3g in the office when I have a fibre connection out to the internet.

I think what you mean is using the pc/laptop internet connection to surf the net on the phone while it is connected via usb to the pc/laptop.
Well the answer to that is sadly this phone does not support that..and like you said..i miss this feature coming from desire hd..

I got a Edimax Wi8reless USB adapter - EW-7711UAn.
That enables you to setup your Internet connected PC as a wirless hotspot

Anyway..people who are using htc devices prior to SGS2 will miss this simple yet important feature thanks to samsung

I connected my phone via usb last night in the hope of letting the phone use my PC cable broadband connection. I can never get game hub to load, it always says it needs a working network connection. I thought game hub would use my T-Mobile web n walk connection. After connecting the phone via usb and enabling usb tethering, it successfully found and installed 2 drivers. Then going back to game hub while still connected to usb, it still said it needed a working connection. So what exactly is USB tethering meant to do?

What you sucessfully achived is that your pc now can use your phone mobile internet connection when it is plugged in via usb...that is usb tethering for samsung( that is what i understand). There is no way yet to allow this phone to use your pc's internet connection while the phone is connected via usb unlike on htc's phones.

I see. So in fact, tethering is completely and utterly useless.
hello i shifted to using GS2 from my blackberry (so im a bit of a noob as ive been using blackberry for years)
i have a bit of a confusion here. i have a problem with usb tethering, do you plug in your phone to ur pc/laptop first then only you go to settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot > tick usb tethering on your GS2 or you tick the usb tethering in settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot then only you plug in your phone via usb to your laptop/pc.
When i plug in my GS2 to my laptop, i couldnt press anything on my phone,it says 'press home key to quit samsung kies', if i do it then i will lose the usb connection, so i tried going to settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot > tick usb tethering, and then connect my GS2 to my laptop, but there is no connection between my laptop and my GS2.
i tried going to settings> applications> development > tick usb debugging, unfortunately when after doing that, when i connect my GS2 to laptop, my laptop says no driver for the device, so there is no autoplay or icon of my phone on the 'my computer' folder my lapop. in short i couldnt access my phone through usb.
Im sorry if my words are confusing, its so hard to put it in words.
i really2 need help, as i need to use the internet from my phone as he internet in my college sucks. thank you
What i'm doing is connecting the phone to PC via USB, then the 'usb tethering' checkbox lights up and I can tap on it to activate it. Also have usb debug mode enabled. Try using it with Kies closed/turned off. I'm using Windows 7 if that helps.
i have successfully use usb tethering on win7. i install kies v2.0.1.11053_99. reboot laptop. run kies, go to Tools> Install driver. reboot after finish. connect SGS2 with usb, enable usb tether and i can use internet on my laptop. using sub tether rite now.
fyi, i've tried with samsung usb driver only installation but cannot use usb tether becos i think it did not install phone modem driver.
usb tethering
Is there any application like the one available in HTC devices for usb connection..? I dont like the way the Samsung designed the application on the SGS2 ./. HTC really great..
Install Kies by Samsung
Install Kies by Samsung
the issue with the usb tethering option not being availavle is the network provider blocking this
If you want them to unblock you have to pay them a small fee,,

Xperia S hotspot

Hi guys,
I'm having this issue on my device where if I enable hotspot, my wireless devices (win 7 laptop, iPod touch, and another android phone) can detect and connect to the network but can't connect to internet. I am on stock 4.0.4 and I used the automatic setup for APNs in the settings option.
I'm in the Philippines and on globe telecom network if it matters.
So far I tried restarting my phone, wireless devices - no go. Did a factory reset and didn't help either. Did some search over the net and no one seems to be having the same issue. I'm thinking it's carrier-related but there are very few times(about twice) over the course of my troubleshooting that my iPod connected for a while. I was able to send browse for and download for 10 minutes and didn't connect again after.
Would this be a hardware failure? Or is it just some APN settings that I need to change? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...

Network Bridge

Hi,
I'm looking for a possibility to connect an accesspoint(A) (without internet access) to my mobile phone and share the umts internet-connection to this accesspoint(A).
With the "hot spot" option it won't work because accesspoint(A) to accesspoint(B) connection is not provided so long...
Is there a way to share the mobile/umts connection to the accesspoint(A). If yes - how may I realize this?
Thx folks
Ok... I didn't found something in the whole world wide web
I want to create a simple app which starts the wifi and mobile connection of my (rooted) device (HTC one mini, Android 4.4.2).
The problem is that the mobile connection is interrupted due to an established wifi connection.
Can I disabled this procedure? Or is there a way this won't happen if a start the connections with the app?
