Current iPhone 3G owner pondering switch to HTC, few ?s please - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've had my iPhone 3G for over a year now, I passed on the 3Gs, cause to me, it was nothing more than just a spec bump, and the exclusive features found on the 3Gs that were not found on the 3G with the 3.0 update were, in my opinion, negligible.
Anyways, I would like to purchase an HTC Hero, but my main concerns are being able to Sync both my Contacts and Calendars with my MacBook Pro. I have figured out how to sync my MacBook Pro with Google Mail and Contacts, and Calendar but I'm not sure how easy and streamlined syncing Google Mail, Contacts and Calender is with an HTC Hero. Could someone verify for me that Syncing all three is possible and it updates both ways, meaning if I update Contanct on the Hero, it'll automatically update my Google contacts? Will it do the same for gmail and Calendar? Any help with this is greatly aprpeciated, thank you.

kman79,
I also use Mac OS X and this was one thing that concerned me. I tried using the methods you mention but was not happy with the results and was concerned that syncing back would be problematic.
Google Contacts has some strange habits with the contact data and tended to mangle up stuff to regularly.
e.g. There are no separate fields for first middle and last name... its all in one field.
I tried Spanning Sync (they do a trial version) and found this to work perfectly. Paid up for a lifetime sub too.
Syncing to and from the Hero works perfectly and their servers handle any Google misbehaviours. Whenever I enter an new iCal event or Address Book contact (or edit one), Spanning sync sends it up to Google.
The Hero will get the data pushed to it usually within seconds or a minute or two. This so far has been more seamless than having to use iSync on my previous Nokia's. You had to manually trigger syncs.
When out, I enter new info and when back on my Mac, its just there.
One big advantage is if you use multiple iCal calendars, in Spanning Sync you select which iCal calendar is synced to which Google Calendar... these all appear on your handset too BTW.
So essentially, just log in in the initial Hero setup, and all your data is sent to the Hero.
PM me if you want a discount code (you get one when you purchase to share and earn the same $5 back your 'friend' gets off the software).
All in all, a very good solution and far more powerful than fudging iCal and Address Book to Google's slightly fudged data handling.

With new Snow Leopard, Google sync is integrated in calendar & email.
If you have other email address than google, you can put gmail to check the other email boxes for messages. This way you will benefit from push on the Hero.

[Q] Does anyone use an android phone professionally?

Is it possible to sync your contacts and calender with your computers? It was simple with winmo. I haven't found a good way with Android. Is there a way? Sync with my work computer ok, sync at home deletes something. next just the opposite. Can't seem to keep track of what is new, changed, old, same.
I use Google for my Contacts and Calendar, so it is never out of sync. For work, I use Moxier Mail or Touchdown, depending on my mood, and both sync my work calendar and contacts with no issue.
Are you using Exchange for your home calendar, or are you wanting to integrate your Google and Exchange calendars together, for example?
I run a business and my Thunderbolt makes it 100% easier. I use gmail... So of course everything syncs without me knowing it Contacts, Calendar, Docs, etc. Plus it allows me to scan anything, convert it to a PDF, and hit print from anywhere and it comes out my printer at my office or my house. It also allows me to FAX docs to anyone.
Now, for those using a work email address VIA exchange or similar it doesn't make it that easy. It will however allow you to sync your contacts and calendars VIA the phone. Or to keep it the same as using Windows Device center the HTC users have HTC Sync.

i have exchange for my works emails are great and my calendar entries are mixed in with my personal on my pure calendar widget. perfect!
+1 on exchange, works perfectly. It even syncs my contact photos from exchange to the phone.
I should have said that I'm using launcher Pro and not Sense. I'm using Outlook both at work and at home. Work has 2 accounts, Gmail and our .com Home is just Gmail. I only need the Gmail contacts and calender to sync properly. When I put the phone in the mix, it seems to loose track, of what is new and changed.
I work for myself as a web and software developer and it's the primary way i keep track of contacts, message/email clients, keep track of tasks and in a pinch, ssh into remote servers to fix things when I am not near a computer.
If your phone is used for your work, you can also write it off as a tax deduction for both purchasing it and usage.
Yes, I use it for work. Like I said, I had no problem with winmo. It worked perfectly. What App are using on your phone to create appointments or tasks? What do you use to sync the task or calender to the computer or to google?
Tasks is one area that Android is weak out of the box. Otherwise, Android does a much better job of handling calendar items, contacts, and email in my opinion. I came from a winmo background also, and I haven't been happier after getting the original droid.
We are using exchange corporately, and my phone connects up perfectly to our exchange server to sync calendar items, contacts, and email. Personally and for a non-profit I work for, I use 3 different gmail accounts to organize calendar items, contacts (literally 3-4000 contacts total), and two gmail email accounts. The device works perfectly.
For gmail, just use the built in gmail, calendar, and contacts (although AOSP contacts is better than sense contacts, IMO). For exchange, an app like Moxier mail, Roadsync, or Touchdown will give you access to your tasks (if necessary). If tasks are not necessary, the built in email, calendar, and contacts work great.

I guess maybe I'm doing something wrong then. I entered an appointment in my phone today. A minute later it popped up on my computer. Great! I go home and sync my phone to my computer and it deleted the appointment out of my phone and off of google. My contacts are a mess. I have 3 or 4 of everything. Some with photos, some without. Some with Facebook numbers. Every time I sync my phone I get a popup with 15 overdue appointments. I dismiss them and next there they are again. Maybe I should try getting rid of the google calender and contacts?

I just use google calendar mostly and sync to my computer. There's also tasks apps out there that sync like http://www.rememberthemilk.com/ that will work with google calendar and standalone. They also have an application for android.

So you're using HTC sync, right? It sounds like you have the settings such that the home computer always takes precedence. Plug your phone into the computer then go find that HTC Sync setting and change it to sync to the most recent change (regardless of device/computer). Once done, the computer will be synced to the phone if that's where the last change occurred.
I use my android for my work exchange account which keeps the corp email and calendar in sync with my work outlook. And events show up on the Google calendar. That's about it But it works great.
+1 Touchdown for Contacts/Calendar/Mail. Totally worth the 20 something bucks I paid for it.
The settings in HTC sync were correct, but I think it was HTC sync causing the problems. If I give it enough time, the phone updates google with contacts and the calender and google updates the computer. Then I use Taskos for the tasks. I quit using HTC sync for anything.

[Q] Contacts & Calendar wont sync with tablet

I asked this originally over on Android forums, but Im not getting a response there, so thought I would try here instead.
Will try and explain the situation as best as I can.
The kit
T-Mobile Pulse Mini (Froyo)
HP Laptop (Win 7)
Easy Tab (Froyo)
The Problem
My kids have been using their phones as their primary device for nearly a year. Contacts stored in it have always synced with Gmail and appear fine on the Laptop so the account is syncing ok.
For xmas they both received Easy Tab's, a cheap Froyo tablet. It looks the biz and performs well. However, we cant get the contacts or calendar to sync.
Gmail mail syncs fine. The tablets have complete access to the internet via Wifi.
We had a market issue when the tablets were first used, but this was resolved by a Force Stop and Clear Data of Google Services Framework, and were advised to do the same to resolve the contacts/Calendar issue, but this hasnt worked.
When going into the contacts settings on the tab Gmail doesnt appear in accounts, only their Twitter accounts, and I cant figure out how to get Gmail to show up in there.
If I go to Accounts & Sync the Gmail account appears there along with the Twitter account, however on going into the Gmail account sync settings the only option in there is Sync Gmail, where as on the phone there are options to sync calendar and contacts.
I really need some help with this to make these tablets complete for the kids as they are great devices, but simple things like sending an email arent as easy as they should be because the contacts list isnt there with the email addresses.
Cheers in advance.

Microsoft Exchange + Google = ?

I am caught between Exchange and the Android ecosystem. Work uses Exchange and Iphones, I sneak in Android stuff where I can (Desire HD, Nexus 7 and other stuff). All my private life is in google calendar. All my work is in Exchange calendars, which is shared and coordinated with lots of ppl.
Is it possible to make an app (if it doesn't exist) that SYNCS DIRECTLY between Exchange and Google?
What I have found so far:
- If you can install software on the PC where you have Outlook installed, you can use Google Sync. I can't do that
- I could possibly install Outlook on another PC and install google sync, and then have that PC running just for that. But comeon?
- If I use Exchange on the devices, I can see combined calendars, but it is basically just pooling two sources and not sync
- I can add online calendars to Outlook from google, but these can't be seen by others? Or what? Not AFAIK.
- I have tried a few apps for the phone, but none does the job.
- I could accept running two calendars all the time, but that is SO messy. Been trying that for a year now and it stinks.
I really hate this situation. Any ideas? I hope I found the right section.
What I basically need is Google sync for android, instead of merely PC.
I think the solution is in #2. If you don't do it yourself, there might be an online service which would do it, and probably for a fee.
I'm not aware of any application which would solve your problem.
I've ended up keeping all my personal stuff in Google and all my work stuff in Exchange. I have none of my personal stuff on my work PC.
On my phone I use email with my Exchange account and Gmail with my Google account.
I sync calendar, email, and contacts for both account. Calendar shows both accounts and People shows all my contacts.
I have no duplicates (no work contacts in Google or personal contacts in Exchange).
This way I have a unified calendar and contacts yet clean separation of work and personal.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. It seems there is no solution.

Bill,
As I write initially, that is what I already do.
I am not happy with this setup. I work long hours and travel a lot - and my colleauges benefit from seeing my private bookings, when trying to book all day events, meetings that require lots of travel, evening meetings etc. Everyone here has everything in Exchange and I am the only one who doesn't offer this solution. Well I guess the answer is "meh"

It sounds as though you would be better off only using Exchange for appointments and forget about Google Calendar.

Making the switch from Android to WP8 Lumia

Well I placed my order for my Lumia today! I am anxious to get it and take it for a spin. As a a previous HTC One X user I am curious if there are any tips for making the switch anyone could provide.

Yep, the only thing I would recommend, is to take a few minutes, or hours to arrange your contacts in your live account:
1. Delete contacts that you don't know
2.- Merge repeated contacts so ther is one contact with full information instead of multiple.
3.- Find on Internet how merge Facebook Calendar events on your live calendar (Very useful for events, and birthdays)
4.- If necessary, add manually, or via Office Outllok your current phone contacts to your live contacts. (Use outlook Connector to add your live account to Outlook, and edit your contacts from there, it much more easy and fast)
5.- If you do all the above steps you wont have to ever think about syncing or backing up contactas ever.
6.- If you add a Coporate Exchange account, contacts wont be merged or displayed on your contacts( that's cool, because most of the time, you dont even know that well of the people on your job) but if you have to write an email for example, you will be able to use your corporate adress book.
7.- If you want to add birthdays of people in your contacts list, don't make it through calendar, make it in the contact itself, so when you are reminded of an event or birthday you can write on facebook wall or text, or call directly from the calendar app.
Once you do that, it is really impressive how WP merge all your contacts from your different services ex: live, facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc, The very few contacts that aren't merged because for example you use nicknames or name abbreviations yo can merge with no hassle inside each contact.
If you do this, you are prepared for the best experience ever, because on the case of phone lost, or formatting or new phone you just input your live credentials and vualá you have your contacts, and calendar synced right away.
Besides that, you only have to find your favorites apps, taking in to you account that for example, facebook and twitter are already embedded in the operating system so they are not necessary.
Welcome to Windows Phone, it is an amazing experience
Excellent thanks!

These are good suggestions but probably not required.
When you add different accounts such as Hotmail, multiple Google accounts, Facebook etc, the contacts will all be merged if they share the same name. If not, you can still manually merge them on the phone. None of the information on the corresponding services is changed - only the way it is displayed on your phone. You can also un-merge certain contacts if you want to. You can also choose what contacts you want to see on the People hub - so for instance, you can turn off your Outlook (work) contacts.
The same is true for the calendars - you can choose which calendars to sync and which ones to show in the Calendar app.
I don't see a need to go through organizing everything online - can be a pain if you have hundreds of contacts.
In case of a lost phone, you still have all the data - just spread around on different services and it will be a breeze to set it up again.
Case in point: I have Hotmail, three Google accounts, Facebook and work email account set-up. Took me less than 5 mins to organize everything on the phone. I turned off Facebook and work email on my People hub - I don't want to see all those contacts.
Anybody else - if you have a different experience, please speak up. But I assure you syncing multiple contacts and calendars is a breeze.

HTC ONE and MS Exchange

Curious about any experiences with our beloved device and their employers/MS Exchange, with email, calenders and contacts.
I have yet to connect my worlds, and I'm hesitant. Our IT guys are going to be making calender syncing available soon, which is tricky as we use a unique calender/scheduling system. I don't want work emails but calender syncing might be to convenient to pass up.
Working great here! Had an issue where a flag on their end needed to be flipped for Android devices but all is well now. Can sync everything individually. I only have email, calendar and tasks set to sync. Left off contacts and can switch any to sync on and off as needed. No out of the ordinary calendars so I can't speak to that. No other issues to speak of.
