Just a quick one... had to reset the phone, When I used to send text messages, In the 'to' if I started typing a name there would be an option along with the '97686789' that comes up in the green suggestion box of the contact name, Now I just get the numbers that correspond to the letters that are meaningless. Is there a setting to get that back that offers me the names in that drop down?
Also, when I receive a text from someone in my phone book, it just shows their number and not their name, depsite them being on the sim, but not the phone, Is that relevant? Does it only show contacts when on phone not sim, and when I transferred sim to phone and you have the option of 'if there are duplicates only show phone' it still showed all duplicated in people and phonebook. And the sim number decreased from 197 to 123, This phone is NUTS!
P.S. Anyone else not get the weather for their area but did when they first had the phone, and now it comes up 'no data available' with just the name of your location instead.
Will this impending update be automatic?

How do I see from which number a Text Message (SMS) was send?
Here is the problem: A friend of mine wend abroad and is using a different mobile phone number. I saved the new number in the contact file under "Home2 phone". Now, if I recieve a text message I actually dont see were it came from, do I?
(Even after clicking on the Message it opens the contact but shows the mobile phone number, not the one it was send from.)
Thanks for anwser
When receiving the message, all you can see is the name of the sender.
When you click on the contact, it shows you only the mobile phone number because, theoretically you can receive sms messages only from mobile phone numbers. A stationary phone number cannot be used to send sms
Torque77: Wrong. You CAN either send and receive SMS from fixed lines in most EU countries. And Rose can handle it without any problems.
Gipo: Just hit Enter when the received message is selected. Contact card will open with proper sender's phone number highlighted. BTW in threaded messages is enough if you just simply hit "Reply" - it will be sent automatically to correct number. (In fact, every number - even different number of the same contact - creates a new thread).
EDIT: OOPS, you're right. It just shows the card without highlighting the number (having a look I saw a last call, not the message). Then only way is direct reply in the thread then. Nevertheless, it's simple and reliable.

Click to collapse
Sorry then. Guess Moldova is waaaay behind and this chapter.
No problem... Just an reminder. Nevertheless, you can't be sure, if it is a phone able to receive it (again - some operators forwards SMS as a voice message then).
At least at the moment you already know, that Rose can send SMS on ANY phone number stored with contact - if you have somebody e.g. with more mobile phones.
Yes, if you just choose a contact in the list and select "SMS" by right-left arrows, the mobile number is used. But if you hit Enter in Addresse field in empty SMS form, select an user, Rose will show you all available phone numbers for the contact and is able to send the message at any of them.
thanks guys
I have a Vibrant and my buddy a Captivate. He has a contact on the sim chip and telephone memory, but not as a google contact. When he attempts to message a certain contact, (just one contact is affected and not all), the message comes up with an error "must use 10 digits". The problem is, the telephone number saved to the contact contain 10-digits. He did say when he initially saved the contact to the phone, he ommitted the area code, and tried to send a text and came up with an error. He has corrected the contact, but the error continues to pop up, despite the contact being modified.
Any idea what is wrong?
when I sens SMS messages on the streak, I'm a greay box, and my girlfriend is beautiful
I don't want to be a grey box anymore.
I've read in a few places that you need to upload a picture into your google profile, but I've done it for every profile I have/can find and it doesn't update to my phone.
anybody have any ideas?
You have to have your own number saved onto your SIM card.
There should be a "SIM Manager" app somewhere on your phone when you're on StreakDroid (DJSteve's ROM), you can add your own number (with "Me" as the name as far as I remember) there ..
Your picture should show up then, at least after rebooting your phone.
I use a stock ROM (347). On my Streak...
1. It is true that you have to save your own phone number to the contact list. However, it is not required that the number be saved to the SIM card. Yes, saving it to the SIM card makes certain that you never lose it should you have to wipe the internal memory. But the contact can be saved to the internal memory without issue.
2. The contact can be named anything you wish and will still work. I use my name and have no issues. This is because the messaging app looks for the phone number first. If it finds that the phone number is the one issued by the carrier, the messaging app will label it "Me". If someone else's number, it will pull the name from the contact and use that.
3. The changes take effect immediately. No rebooting required.
I don't use StreakDroid obviously, so I can't speak for that ROM, but unless the Contacts app has been replaced with something else, what I said above should apply.
I think I need to set it up in the "my phone number" area of my phone first, it comes up as "unknown"
nothing seems to be able to fix it because my research shows that it's something that needs to be set up especialy on the SIM first.
and my carrier is useless and has me on hold while they talk to dell, who'll likely say it can't be done.
I'll just use my girlfriends iPhone to do it...
Are you carrier locked? That might explain the run-around you have to do to get this working. I tend to forget that mine is an unlocked model.
I'm on carrier locked, AT&T.
You simply save your phone number in your contacts. I called it "me" for easy reference. Then you just change the picture of "me" to whatever you want (I used the little android robot).
There are no tricks. No changing of the google profile account. Just save a contact as your phone number. Well, ok, the only trick is to play with it to see if it wants the format as 1-(areacode)-(number) or simply (number) or simply (areacode)-(number). Mine is (areacode)-(number) and it works with no problems.
It's an unlocked phone, a "me" account doesn't work, nothing I put anywhere does anything, and I'm pretty sure it's because the "my phone number" section in "about phone" comes up as 'unknown' which refers to a special number that can be put on the SIM card, which doesn't happen all that often in australia, because the average telco representitave is either 16 and twirls their hair, or 40+ and so dumb they have trouble breathing and typing your phone number.
If I had to guess, your SIM cards were already programmed with your number in that section.
Same here i just added myself to the phonebook and selected a pic and that was that.

Go to settings - about phone - phone status - my phone number
Does it have you phonenumber there?
this worked for me

I have used a variety of wifi texting services like Heywire, Textfree, etc. The problem is that I am assigned a new number. I don't have data, so even though I might explain to people to text me on my mobile carrier's number (I get free incoming) so that I can receive it wherever I am, they always end up getting confused and texting my wifi texting number and then wonder why I don't receive it right away (because I might not be connected to wifi when they send it).
I need an app that can text over wifi (so I can avoid charges) but uses MY phone number. Even if it doesn't actually use my phone number, I don't care. But as long as it forces the person getting the message to reply back to my mobile carrier number.
I tried mysms, as well as ChompSms, etc; but they all charge to send over wifi to users that don't have the app. And What'sApp and others like it forces the end user to also have the app.
The fact that there are apps like mysms and ChompSms that send sms messages over wifi with your own phone number to anyone that can receive sms shows that it's possible.
Does anyone know of a COMPLETELY FREE one?
Oh, and about mysms. It syncs everything together and just fine, for free. I am talking about purely wifi texting (NOT through my carrier... my carrier charges me 10 cents per outgoing text; incoming is free). Here is what I did to try and set it up.
Settings > Websms connectors
Chose: Mysms out
brought to Google Play Store, downloaded Mysms out connector.
Opened Mysms again
Went back to Settings > Websms connectors
Chose: Mysms out
Checked off "Enable mysms out"
Then I went to create a new message to someone, and tried to choose the "Mysms out" option, but it's always greyed out.
Do I need to add credits? Is that why it's grayed out? If I click on "current text rates" in the mysms out settings, it says "The current global text rate is $0.12 (international only).
I took that to mean that the US and Canada is free and that if I was to send texts internationally it would cost 12 cents.
I just want something that is free for basic texting in the US and Canada.
I tried using Beetalk too, but a) I don't understand how to send an sms in the app AT ALL, and b) I downloaded the Beetalk connector for for mysms's websms to send an sms through it (supposedly it will use my mobile number but through wifi only?) but I can't figure out how to sign in. Nothing will work.
For example, when I "sign up" in the Beetalk app, I enter my phone number and my name (which then is my username?) and it sends a confirmation number via text to my phone. I enter the confirmation number and then it logs me in. But in Mysms, I check it off to enable it, and then attempt to enter my username (at least what I think is my username?) and then I've tried the confirmation number as the password, my "BeeTalk ID" as my password... I have no idea. How do I know my username and password? BeeTalk doesn't even require a password. I tried logging out and then clicking "Log on", but then it gets me to do the process over again; phone number, name, confirmation number; then logs me in.
I am SO confused! Any ideas? I tried contacting the developers, but no response to my problems yet.
Can't do it
Found my answer for mysms. No texting to Canadian and American numbers: mysms.com/en/mysmsout
Any ideas on what else I can do?
I have a problem with country codes. When my wife sends me a text and i try and answer it nothing happens. My phone sais the message is sent, but she never gets the message.
I think i have found the problem. The country code is missing. I have entered her phone number as +46xxxxxxxxx but in the text the "+46" part is missing.
Might be useful to know that i have a danish sim card (+45) but i live in sweden (+46). Therefor have i edited all my contacts so they all have the +XX code in front of their phone numbers.
If i initiate a new text message and send it to her it works as it should, but when she initiates a new conversation the problem occur.
Any tips? It's really annoying as i have no idea that the message havent been received!!!!
I read something about "international call assist" but i cand find that setting anywhere
