[Q] FREE texting over wifi; but keep number - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have used a variety of wifi texting services like Heywire, Textfree, etc. The problem is that I am assigned a new number. I don't have data, so even though I might explain to people to text me on my mobile carrier's number (I get free incoming) so that I can receive it wherever I am, they always end up getting confused and texting my wifi texting number and then wonder why I don't receive it right away (because I might not be connected to wifi when they send it).
I need an app that can text over wifi (so I can avoid charges) but uses MY phone number. Even if it doesn't actually use my phone number, I don't care. But as long as it forces the person getting the message to reply back to my mobile carrier number.
I tried mysms, as well as ChompSms, etc; but they all charge to send over wifi to users that don't have the app. And What'sApp and others like it forces the end user to also have the app.
The fact that there are apps like mysms and ChompSms that send sms messages over wifi with your own phone number to anyone that can receive sms shows that it's possible.
Does anyone know of a COMPLETELY FREE one?
Oh, and about mysms. It syncs everything together and just fine, for free. I am talking about purely wifi texting (NOT through my carrier... my carrier charges me 10 cents per outgoing text; incoming is free). Here is what I did to try and set it up.
Settings > Websms connectors
Chose: Mysms out
brought to Google Play Store, downloaded Mysms out connector.
Opened Mysms again
Went back to Settings > Websms connectors
Chose: Mysms out
Checked off "Enable mysms out"
Then I went to create a new message to someone, and tried to choose the "Mysms out" option, but it's always greyed out.
Do I need to add credits? Is that why it's grayed out? If I click on "current text rates" in the mysms out settings, it says "The current global text rate is $0.12 (international only).
I took that to mean that the US and Canada is free and that if I was to send texts internationally it would cost 12 cents.
I just want something that is free for basic texting in the US and Canada.
I tried using Beetalk too, but a) I don't understand how to send an sms in the app AT ALL, and b) I downloaded the Beetalk connector for for mysms's websms to send an sms through it (supposedly it will use my mobile number but through wifi only?) but I can't figure out how to sign in. Nothing will work.
For example, when I "sign up" in the Beetalk app, I enter my phone number and my name (which then is my username?) and it sends a confirmation number via text to my phone. I enter the confirmation number and then it logs me in. But in Mysms, I check it off to enable it, and then attempt to enter my username (at least what I think is my username?) and then I've tried the confirmation number as the password, my "BeeTalk ID" as my password... I have no idea. How do I know my username and password? BeeTalk doesn't even require a password. I tried logging out and then clicking "Log on", but then it gets me to do the process over again; phone number, name, confirmation number; then logs me in.
I am SO confused! Any ideas? I tried contacting the developers, but no response to my problems yet.

Can't do it
Found my answer for mysms. No texting to Canadian and American numbers: mysms.com/en/mysmsout
Any ideas on what else I can do?

Can't send SMS

Ok
so I've unlocked my XDA and use a 3 sim. I can make calls just fine, I can receive text messages just fine but I cannot send texts messages.
Also, I cant access my sim contacts either. I can get around this by copying my contacts to the PC and then to the XDA but I use multiple PC's and am always forgetting not to synchronise contacts on any PC's other than the one with the correct data so I keep losing it.
Anyone got any ideas how I can resolve this.
I have an update for you all.......
I've spoken with 3 and they have assurd me (for what it is worth) that they have not imposed any restrictions on sending SMS (I wondered because I know alot of people take the 3 contract for the cheap calls and then don't use any 3 services but use the O2 roam facility that presumably costs 3 money) so I have to assume I have a set up or technical problem with the XDA.
When I try to use SIM Manager I get an error message saying "Sim is busy. Wait 5 seconds and try again.". Well I wait and wait but it doesn't get any better than that.
SIM Toolkit does nothing when I try to use it, not even the graciousness to give me an error message.
3 said just type in the servcie centre number and away you go (they also said to uncheck the "use unicode when necessary" box) but that doesn't seem to help. Also after I type the service centre number in and try to send an SMS, which fails everytime, I go back to where you enter the service centre number and the field is blank again.
The error message I get when I try to send an SMS is "Your SMS message has not been sent because the SIM is invalid. Contact your customer service center for a new SIM" Well, of course my 3 sim is valid,it works just fine in the e616.
The SMS messages appear in the "Sent" directory even though they haven't been sent (and they really haven't or at least they certainly haven't been received)
ROM Version is 3.17.03 Eng (in fact it's the XDA developer ROM)
ROM Date 05/15/03
Radio Version 4.16.00 (I down graded to this to get the thing unlocked)
Protocol Version 32S54

Message (SMS) was send from which Nr.?

How do I see from which number a Text Message (SMS) was send?
Here is the problem: A friend of mine wend abroad and is using a different mobile phone number. I saved the new number in the contact file under "Home2 phone". Now, if I recieve a text message I actually dont see were it came from, do I?
(Even after clicking on the Message it opens the contact but shows the mobile phone number, not the one it was send from.)
Thanks for anwser
When receiving the message, all you can see is the name of the sender.
When you click on the contact, it shows you only the mobile phone number because, theoretically you can receive sms messages only from mobile phone numbers. A stationary phone number cannot be used to send sms
Torque77: Wrong. You CAN either send and receive SMS from fixed lines in most EU countries. And Rose can handle it without any problems.
Gipo: Just hit Enter when the received message is selected. Contact card will open with proper sender's phone number highlighted. BTW in threaded messages is enough if you just simply hit "Reply" - it will be sent automatically to correct number. (In fact, every number - even different number of the same contact - creates a new thread).
EDIT: OOPS, you're right. It just shows the card without highlighting the number (having a look I saw a last call, not the message). Then only way is direct reply in the thread then. Nevertheless, it's simple and reliable.

Sorry then. Guess Moldova is waaaay behind and this chapter.
No problem... Just an reminder. Nevertheless, you can't be sure, if it is a phone able to receive it (again - some operators forwards SMS as a voice message then).
At least at the moment you already know, that Rose can send SMS on ANY phone number stored with contact - if you have somebody e.g. with more mobile phones.
Yes, if you just choose a contact in the list and select "SMS" by right-left arrows, the mobile number is used. But if you hit Enter in Addresse field in empty SMS form, select an user, Rose will show you all available phone numbers for the contact and is able to send the message at any of them.
thanks guys

Atrix Call Reject option?

I'm coming from the Captivate, and the only option I'm really missing on the Atrix is the call reject feature. I want to be able to automatically reject calls from certain numbers and unknown numbers, can't find the option there anywhere.
I know I can use the 'silent rington' trick, but that's not idea and doesn't work with unknown numbers.
Any thoughts?
Are you asking to blacklist certain numbers, dismiss a call like with volume down, or have all calls for a period of time go straight to voicemail?
Blacklist numbers, I found an app for it though that I'm gonna try
Reject with Text
I was wondering something similar. With the Captivate and many other phones I had, there was an option to "Reject with Text." This was a nice feature I used every now and then. It seems that it is missing on the Atrix, does anyone know of an app or something that can do something similar?
I would suggest using Google Voice, which is free and open to anyone now.
You give out your GVoice number, and set GVoice to forward to your cell phone. No one ever needs to know your cell number direct, and if you change it..you just change the setting in GVoice.
GVoice allows you to actually block individual numbers--and generate specific responses to them! And you won't pay for the call, which would use cellular airtime if it was just your cell phone blocking it.
When editing a contact ---- under "Additional info" -> "Call handing" you can select "send strait to voicemail" .... however Mr. Number block is great for this by automatically blocking known spam by sending straight to voice mail or my favorite the "answer and hangup" tactic
The best solutions as stating before is Google voice as you can play a "this number is disconnected" or "the number you are calling does not accept unknown/blocked numbers" voice mail greeting.
Contacts > [Select a contact] > Additional Info > "Send straight to voicemail" [Check box]
I downloaded an app that works for me. The Contact thing is fine for numbers that you know, but not for unknown caller numbers.
I've tried Google Voice and wanted to like it, but its not my cup of tea.
It looks like the reject call feature and list is missing on this ROM, but not a big deal since there are apps to handle it.

The reject call feature works perfectly...the reason they don't allow you to just block all unknown calls is because almost nobody would actually need that. What if your mother ends up being rushed to the hospital because of an accident and the police try calling your phone (the number she gives)? Police officers usually leave messages but what if he doesn't want to so he tries calling a few times and thinks your phone is off because it always goes directly to voicemail?
It's not that hard to just hit "Reject" when you get a phone call from an unknown number...

The police would not be calling from an 'Unknown' number, if the police are calling me I'd see a number displayed on the caller ID.
I've NEVER received a call from a number tagged as unknown or blocked that wasn't a telemarketer call.
The 'reject call' feature, as I've seen it implemented on MANY other Android phones in the settings menu, is MISSING on this phone. Its not that it doesn't work, its that it is missing (AFAIK anyway)
I agree that it is missing, I miss it too. I used it all the time for a few numbers that kept calling me and asking for random names. Seriously though the same number would call and each time ask for a different name. All i ever had to do before was enable auto reject and click "add to reject" when that number, or set of numbers called. Now I will have to add it to contacts and then reject it. Not a big deal, and good to know that I have an option.
soo in the end whats the name of the free program that can reject automatically the unknown callers? i need that 2.(the SGS+ had that feature and it was awsome, i really need it)

Strange SMS Problem

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 which i am having a really irritating SMs problem with.
My dad lives in Cyprus, when he sends me an SMS i can not reply, when i try it just says 'sending' then 'failed' . In order to get the text SMS to send to him i have to delete the message thread, then start a new message and it will send. Now if he then replies, i will need to delete the message thread again in order to be able to send him a new message.
I do not have this issue with any other contacts that i am aware. The only difference with my dad is that he lives abroad in Cyprus, and all my other contacts are here in the UK. Has anyone else had this issue? Know what causes it? I have deleted and recreated the contact but still the same.
Many thanks.
Do you have your dad's number stored in contacts with country code or not ? I was on the verge of smashing my phone when i was abroad, trying to call persons in my native country and i couldn't because i didn't have numbers stored with country code. Maybe that's your issue too
I think the problem is related to what SMS server your dad is using, I had same issue with my X-girls phone, no one could direct reply to SMS...
Hi, thanks for the replies.
Sp1tfire, i have changed the number configuration around several times, all with no success.
Fritz, this sounds plausible, however this would surely affect other phones replying? I don't have this issue when using my iphone 4 so it only happens from the Galaxy2 at the minute. I will try and use a colleagues Android phone to text him and test it.
Somehow you, or TSP (Telephone Service provider), have inserted a sms mail server address that is not valid.
here in my country, there has been scams, "cheaper SMS, enter this server setting" and stuff like that, so there is a setting on you phone that is wrong.

Can't be cause of settings, if he can actually send new sms to that number, but he can't reply from the received sms. His settings are correct as long as he can send sms. Must be something else. Are you using default sms app or a third party software ?

I am using the stock SMS app. I have just wiped the phone and installed the KF2 firmware. Going to see if that helps.
Sp1tfire, thats right, i can only reply to him when i delete the existing thread. I can however send new SMS to him no problem, so long as the thread is deleted before hand. Very frustrating as i lose the history every time.
Update, exactly the same on KF2 Firmware.
Ok, so i tried with a friends HTC desire and he has the same issue. also found my brother who has an iphone 3gs is unable to reply to my Dads number. So at least know its no longer just my phone and that it must be something the other end. Many thanks for the help.
Same problem here
When I reply to my girl it says: failed, when i delete the whole thread it goes.
It's only when I text her, all the other contact go fine
On my old sgs I had it to, but only on stock, when I was on CM7 it was OK.
Cant imagine that its something with the other phone i'm sending it to though

I remember in all the previous phones I've had, there's been a setting in the SMSC Settings allowing the user to specify whether or not to "Reply using the same SMSC" (or something along those lines).
If the option is ticked, the phone attempts to reply to the message through the SMSC that the text originally came from (rather than the one set in your handset).
The cause of the error may be because the SMSC overseas does not recognise your phone/SIM and therefore won't allow the replying message to go through.
And perhaps this may explain why deleting the whole thread and restarting a brand new message works - that is, the new message will go through the SMSC that is set in your phone for your own network.
Although, I've had a look through the settings in my SGS2 and can't seem to find that setting anywhere... (doesnt mean it's not there - it could just be that I don't know my phone well enough because I've only had it for a few days ).
I think your dad's SMS configuration settings is forcing you (or any other person he is sending an SMS to) to reply through his operators message centre
Ask him to check his sms settings and disable any such message centre settings from his side. This should solve the problem.

[Q] use regular messages vs google voice

So as much as I love Google voice alot of times it won't send my messages or I receive them really delayed.... I'd like to be able to receive these texts as regulars texts and just use the gvoice app for VM... Any ideas on what to do here? However I like that now gvoice is integrated with my phone that when I do send regular texts they come from my gvoice number
Strangely I can't seem to find a setting for that at all.
I think the reason you're getting delayed texts is because you're in an area where you have aren't getting a data connection, and when that happens I've found that your messages don't send and you won't receive your messages until way later, unless you manually hit refresh after you internet access again.
Unfortunately I haven't tried this myself because I enjoy using GV for texts, but you could try reinstalling the app. I know that during the first time you start it, there's a setup which asks if you want to integrate it and all these other things. Hopefully it will give you that option again when you reinstall it. Other than that, I don't really see any options that would let you disable texts alone.
I haven't found that setting either. Google voice is awesome and all but I had to remove because of the delayed texts.

Go on the GV website. In the top-right corner you will see your phone number, click on it. That takes you to the settings page. There you will see a section that says "Forward Calls To" and you will see your number with Sprint/GV integrated next to it. Click edit under your number there and select "Receive text messages on this phone." You might have to stop the GV app from notifying you.
I did this and now I can walk around with data off (AMAZING battery life) and still send/receive texts through the sense messaging app (Sprint network instead of data connection). They still get archived by Google so Sprint must be forwarding them to Google.
I actually have to use the app. At my college campus I have absolutely no service at all. But the campus has a canpus-wide WiFi signal so I use that to send me texts...I really hope sprint can get some service over here
