Album is slow, thumbnails are not created on sdcard - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I've bought a Transcend microSD 8GB class 6 for my hero, but the photo album seem really slow. When I open album it displays photos one by one, instead of instantly and even after it loads them all grey boxes appear when scrolling.
If I close the application and then browse the album again, it loads them all one by one although they were loaded before.
Any suggestions?

How big are the pictures? what rom are you using?
I run Modaco's 2.0 rom and don't have any issue's its really fast and all the pictures are loaded directly. with a 16Gb sd card

Some are 640x480, and other 8MP resolution but that seem to not affect the load times since they all take the same time to load.
I am using the stock ROM.

Did you update your Hero? with the stock rom its a disaster its really slow i had the same issue till i moved to modaco's rom.
is your hero rooted? if so try Modaco's rom if not try to update youre hero.

I thought I was the only one. I am having the exact same problem. It seems like the "thumbnail cache" does not work as it is supposed to do. It did work however in the beginning with the original microSD card. After inserted a ScanDisk 8GB class 2 this issue started (same pictures on both cards). Swaping back to the original card and it worked fine again. Deleting "thumbnail cache and it "builds up" nice again after viewing the pictures in grid view the first time. Now back in with the 8GB card and it did not not work. Now I deleted all pictures and added some of them and then it suddenly worked in some folders. I dont know how many time I have deleted all pictures and tried to get it to work but allways failed. There is no logic, randomly folders sometimes starts to work and even in some folders were the "cache" is working after adding some new pictures just those new ones are not added in the cache. Always when going back to the original card everything works perfect. All this testing was made on the original rom.
After switching to Modaco's 2.0 rom I made another attemp to get this working but the result was exactly as above.
I did searched a lot and I did not find any one with this issue so I concluded that it must be the ScanDisk 8GB class 2 card causing this.
Ordered a Transcend microSD 16 GB class 6 card and have just inserted and started up and STILL THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM
We can't be the only one with this issue. I think many may not even be aware of it. For me it is terrible knowing how smoth it goes when it works.
Should be intresting to know if it actually works for anyone that have change the card.
PLEASE HELP. All inputs are very much appriciated.

Its really anoying. I replaced my SD card i have a 16gb i thought class 2 and before that i had a 8Gb class 4 both worked fine. i don't think the problem is the sd card. i had this problem with the stock rom but when i moved to modaco's rom it was fixed. did you try to wipe?? maybe that will fix the problem.

Ok i just made a movie to show the speed off mine hero album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4V8OIQlO8M
Is it slower than this?? or the same?
Sorry if its not sharp but its only to show the speed right.
------Edit-------
This is with a 16GB class 2 SD card i forget to mention it.

haha at first i thought you want to show us how slow it is on your device. and i was wondering: what the hell is wrong with the album?! its working perfectly on this video
now i realized that the video is meant to show that there are no problems with different sd cards

Thanks commodoor for trying to help out. It is much slower and I dont think this is easy solved by changing rom. I have tried that and wiped and cleard cashe and format card and so on but nothing helps.
The first time you open up a folder with pictures it takes longer time due to that it is building up the thumbnail cache. If you then add pictures it will add it to the cache so everytime you open that folder it goes very quickly and smoth.
My and the first poster issue is that it does this everytime like it was the first time always.
Try this. Delete all files in DCIM/.thumbnail This is the place where the phone places the thumbnail cache for "Camera shots" (mine is always empty by the way). Now open the "album" and "Camera shots" and the phone will start showing the pictures much slower. When all pictures are loaded (and new thumbnail cache has been creaated close and go in again and now it shuold be quick and smoth again.
this is how it should work but does'nt for me and the first poster.
anyone else has any clue ??

I have found that THIS is the problem that it's causing it.
If you use the default sandisk wich came with the Hero this folder is not empty, it contains the thumbnails as it is supposed to, so the next time you open up an album thumbnails are instantly loaded.
That does not happen when using my Transcend 8GB class 6, the folder is empty. Any suggestions?

This is not the root cause to this issue. The problem is that "album" program does not update this folder with "thumbnails". I will try to nail it down further to possible find a solution. I am surprised that it seams that only you and I have this problem.
No one else ????

So now we are 3 persons with this problem.
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/292539/album-thumbnails-not-created/
Who will be the fourth???

I am not sure, but maybe it's caused because when I opened the phone for the first time, I didn't use the stock microSD but the Transcend one?
sixpackbud did you do the same thing?

I've switched to a Sandisk 16GB Class 2 card and have no problem. My phone is rooted running the new ROM and I have 130 pictures in the DCIM folder on the card - a mixture of shots from my old Nokia, the ones that came on the card with the phone and pictures taken by the Hero. It took a while when first opening to generate the thumbnails, but now shows them immediately.

I'm the one who posted on modaco about the same problem (see sixpackbud) post.
I also replaced the stock sd card for a transcend 8GB class 6.
So it seems all the problems started when changing the sd card.
Here I come with my 50 cents:
I tested the transcend class 6 card and I have to say it has a good read speed, but IT IS NOT A CLASS 6 CARD WHEN WRITING.
It does not get to the 6MB/sec it has to, but it stays at 4MB/sec.
So it really is a class 4 speed.
Maybe the album's thumbnails issue has to do with the card's write speed???

Licenced, can you test the write speed of your 16GB sandisk card????
please???

Following testing has now been done.
Wipe and load clean modaco rom 2.0. Directly went to camera and took some pictures and looked in album.
SanDisk microSDHC 8 GB class 2: NOT OK, thumbnails NOT created
Transcend microSDHC 16 GB class 6: NOT OK, thumbnails NOT created
Original SanDisk microSD 2GB Class 2: OK, thumbnails created
So it definitely seems to be connected to the cards. Now I did some speed measurement from the computer.
SanDisk microSDHC 8 GB class 2: NOT OK, thumbnails NOT created
Read: 10 000 kbytes/s
write: 3 600 kbytes/s
Transcend microSDHC 16 GB class 6: NOT OK, thumbnails NOT created
Read: 9 000 kbytes/s
write: 4 000 kbytes/s
Original SanDisk microSD 2GB Class 2: OK, thumbnails created
Read: 4 000 kbytes/s
write: 3 500 kbytes/s
The common thing for the two cards not working is that the read speed is much higher. You can actually see the difference clearly when loading album first time.
The only conclution I can draw out of this is that the thumbnail creating procedure doesn't work correctly when using high speed cards.
Is there anyone out there that can verify this by checking that album browsing works ok while using high speed sdcard
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for making these tests. I suppose that if that was the issue then this would have been reported by multiple users. Let's see.
I have also contacted HTC support and awaiting response.

I did the same tests that you did, using these cards:
SanDisk microSDHC 8 GB class 2: (the one that came with an htc magic) NOT OK, thumbnails NOT created
Transcend microSDHC 8 GB class 6: (the one i bought and I'm using now) NOT OK, thumbnails NOT created
Original SanDisk microSD 2GB Class 2: (the one that came with the hero) NOT OK, thumbnails created (NOT OK to me)
The speed tests showed exactly the same speeds you got.
See that the transcend is NOT a class 6 card???. What a dissapointment. I trusted the brand.
But..... I just solved the problem.
Copying 4 files I found inside the .thumbnails dir on the 8gb card that came with the htc magic.
I noticed (albeit the dir names are somewhat different) the .thumbnail dir in the magic had 4 files that were not thumbnail files.
The files are named: .thumbdata33-1967290299, .thumbdata3-1763508120, image_last_thumb and video_last_thumb.
I just copied those 4 files into the /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails dir and the albums app started generating thumbnails.
The firs file is 230K long, the others 12K, 2K and 2K.
Maybe is a concurrency issue??? the writing speed of the card is not enough to allow creating more than one file at a time?
So putting in the card a pre-created file helps?
You can try with an empty file.

HTC Support answer:
"We would have to investigate, as having just tried it on mine, it works absolutely fine.
you haven't been messing around with Apps to SD have you? i wonder if that could have anything to do with it? The device should work with any SD card, and it certainly seems to when we try it here, but of course we haven't done anything to the ROM.
what programs have you installed from the market? maybe we could test here and see if the same thing happens here once we have installed the same.
best regards,
HTC Europe Support"

[Q] viewing jpeg pics from a sd card

Benn lurking here for a few days trying to soak in all the info I can until I get my G-Tab from the last woot-off in. Let me start out by saying that the community that has grown around this tablet is great. Lots of good info and work being done to push the G-tab to its potential. Thanks to the Devs and everyone else who contributes.
So my question is this ...... After doing some research I plan to install Vegan 5.1 on my G-Tab when it arrives. I will be sharing the tab with my wife who is a photographer. She said the main feature she wants is to be able to use the tablet to proof her photographs with her clients after a photo shoot. Meaning she will be taking the SD card out of the camera and using a USB memory card reader to access the SD card on the G-Tab. Will this be possible to do on the G-Tab? Is there an app or software that would be better for viewing pictures off of an SD card?
From what I've read so far there seems to be a problem with the tablet not recognizing sdcard2 right? or is there a workaround or fix for this?
Please let me know any suggestions you guys have on how she will have to go about viewing the pictures off of an SD card. I am open to installing different ROMS than Vegan if I have too.
Thanks in advance.
I think there may be some more experienced replies than mine, my experience with the g-tab is still new, however an approach that should work would be to use a mini-sd card in a sleeve, in her camera, then take out the mini-sd and pop that into the g-tab slot. Then you can use the file brower/manager app on the g-tab and browse the mini sd; should be able to just tab an image and show.
Thanks for the reply Riccarr. That sounds like an option but dont want to have to buy all new micro cards unless that is the only option. But I will keep that in mind.
Does anyone else know if its a problem reading jpegs off an sd card through the usb port using a usb card reader? Please share your experiences on viewing pics from a card and if there are any problems I should be ready for. Thanks
I've heard that you can run an SD Card reader off the USB port, in VEGAn 5.11 at least. I've not tried it myself, although I can let you know later tonight as I'm about to head out and buy one.
GoPro HD camera takes an SD card, and I want to be able to view my trackday runs on the tablet while at the track. In glorious HD.
First off I would suggest installing VEGAn-TAB 7.0 instead of earlier Beta version. That's mainly because it is working so well for me. I've had no problems loading .jpg files (of photographs) as well as video files on both the external 16gb micro SD Card and 8gb USB Flash Drive. I've also been able to copy files back and forth between the internal and external SD drives. The USB Flash Drive can be used to copy files to the internal SD drive or to simply use as a second drive to play videos or display photograhs (.jpg files). To copy and paste a file from a drive to go to another drive, simply press and hold the file to be copied and a menu is displayed. Select copy. Then go to the drive and folder you want to paste the file. From the copy/paste notification (press the icon displayed at bottom center) select the file or folder to be pasted. The paste process can be displayed via the notifications window (from the icons on the lower left of the window, press the icon furthest to the right). Curiously enough, the safest place to store and view either videos or .jpg files seems to be the USB Flash Drive. The internal and external SD cards work fine as well, but there does seem to be a problem at times with these files simply disappearing. Good luck.

VEGAn 7.0 RC does work well, and it's arguably the prettiest ROM out there. I've only not gone to it due to the lack of hardware acceleration for video decoding, I'm worried it would result in poor HD playback.
Ok, now on to the card reader. I bought a cheap-o USB reader from Office Depot for $12.99. I'm currently streaming "I am Murloc" from a 2GB Kingston SD card.
Note: The card had to be reformatted in FAT32 for it to work. NTFS will supposedly work for VEGAn as well, but I've not tested if my camera can read either. FAT32 should be safe.
Edit: Spoke too soon. It's working fine as long as I don't put it in the camera. Once it's been in the camera, I can't access it anymore. Not sure why...
Edit 2: Er... ok, now it's working again. Apparently there needs to be something in the root folder for it to pick it up, another folder doesn't work? Will have to test more.

[Q] Windows media player / micro SD card problem

I have put a Kingston 8gb in my HTC HD2. Managed to add 3.3 GB of music (synced through WMP on pc). This all worked fine initially on wmp and sense player on phone. However I don't appear to be able to add any more music. There are errors in sync or sync says ok but wmp or sense on phone cant see or play the new music files. There are usually folders within file explorer which apparently contain all the tracks added including album art but these cannot be played (i've tried Nitrogen as well) or play only a few seconds of the track which then constantly repeats.
Anybody got any ideas of a fix for this?
OS version 5.2.21913
Rom 3.14.405.2
Radio version 2.15.50.14

Yep, tracks appear in windows explorer but will not play.
Try deleting "AudioManager_Eng.vol" in "/Application Data/HTC/AudioManager_Eng/". You may have to restart the phone to delete it because the sense player locks the file when its running.

I've done this, but now HTC music player cannot find files at all. Win and nitro player can. I tried syncing new tracks again but neither player can play them, although apparently they can see them.
Have you tried running chkdsk on the sd card when the phone is in disk drive mode. File System Issues can sometimes cause these problems.

How do I do this?
Right Click on the "Removable Disk" in "Computer" that represents the sd card. Click "Properties" then go to the "Tools" tab and under "Error Checking" click "Check now...". Make sure that "Automatically fix file system errors" check box is ticked and click "Start".
Done that, found one error in folder fixed. However makes no difference to adding any more music.
Is the music your trying to copy the same format as the music that plays and what is that format?
Yes same format, ripped to WMA variable bit rate
Can you confirm the files are being copied correctly and not becoming corrupt when they reach the sd card. I take it they play fine on the PC. Try using HashCalc from SlavaSoft to generate the checksum of one of the music files on the PC and then the same music file when it is on the sd card. If you have just copied the file to the sd card then remember to eject the sd card, take it out and plug it back in before generating the checksums. Compare the checksums and if they are different then the file has become corrupt when it reaches the sd card.
Done this, file appears originally on file explorer on phone sd, but vanishes after eject/replace. Calculated prior to eject totally different numbers, eject/replace deletes file, leaving empty folder.
Is there any value in syncing to sd in card reader directly?
Ive tried straight copy / paste without success.

Sounds to me it is time for a new SD card. You should not be having this much trouble with a good SD card.
Yes it is some value in using a SD card reader to transfer data to a SD card. For that is the only function ofcthe SD card reader is to read data on the card, write datacfrom your computercto the card, or write data from the card to your computer nothing else. Your HD2 has all kinds of things going on while you use it for USB mass storage. Also if you try a SD card reader and have the same problem you are pretty much assured the SD card is shot. Unless you reformat the SD card with the reader and it will work then. If it still exhibits the same behavior after reformatting it is a bad SD card. Google Panisonic SD card formatting software and download and use it to reformat your SD card. Do a full wipe and use Fat 32.
I reformatted and then I tried using card reader, OK until 3gb ish (of 8) was used. Then errors started. Mix of files (wma, wav etc) using winamp to sync. One error is that Nitro played tracks but it appeared that one track would be repeated. The card is only about a week old.
Is there an issue due to mix of os, windows 7 on pc and windows mobile 6.5 on phone?
Would upgrading phone to Win 7 sort the problem?

Changing over to WP7 would probably only enhance your problem seeing as WP7 uses your SD card as internal memory.
Where did you purchase the SD card? Something tells me it wad online.
It was online, Ebay Pureprices. Kingston though, proper packaging, I'd have thought it would be ok.
I copied some more to the card in phone, tried to play them with card reader, explorer/winamp sees them but will not play, other files previously copied do play.

Well I can't say for sure but I do suspect you were sold a bogus SD card. Even if it was in the right packaging yhat is still not a roper assurence thatcit is logit now. The internet scammers are getting realky good now days. They probably sold you a SD card that is actually only like 4 gig and made it look like a 8gig. I have even heard of people getting SD cards that were sold as 32gig and werecactually only 2gig. You can do some googling and see if you can find some software that will tell you the true size of the card and class also.
This is interesting, I summed the reported file sizes on the card amounting to 2026 mb. the phone (settings sd card and phone storage) reports 7852 mb total 3003 used. This is echoed by my computer when read via the phone and by card reader. I know cards are reported as slightly less capacity (?setup files) but not more than 1/2.
I found this site http://fightflashfraud.wordpress.co...ld-standard-in-detecting-fake-capacity-flash/
any ideas of its veracity?
There is a link on this site regarding fake Kingston cards on Ebay, that seller however had poor feedback, the seller of this card is 100% positive feedback, and only appears to be selling 8gb+ cards and 250+ of them in the last month.

Man nice find I will be downloading that for myself. Kudos to you.
From the results hou got there I think it is pretty safe to say you got a bogus SD card. Not neccasaraly defending the seller you bought it from. But they may have been as much a victum of someone selling them the bogus card too. I know a lot of things are cheaper online but I think I will just have to go down to my local Best buy and get me a SD card. Just to much of a risk to buy some stuff on line.

[Q] sd card problems??

Hi everyone,
Looking for some input and advice. Last week I bought a Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 from Amazon.uk. I also bought a 64gb class 10 sandisk microSD after reading about so many people having success with them.
I cannot seem to make it work properly. I first format the SD to fat32 using the player, loaded 45gb of music onto it and everything seemed to work properly for 1 day. Now however everytime I turn on the player i'm greeted with a little Sdcard icon with an ! mark in it. I have to go to settings and manually mount the card everytime. Even then in Total Space and Available Space it says 'oo' If I unmount and remount it eventually shows as 59.4GB total space.
Im using poweramp but after it scans the folder I have music stored in it dumps most of the music into a folder named 'unknown artist' even though I have all artist, album, album art tags filled in perfectly.
When I try to play some music it says "Too many failed files, playing will stop now" and 30gb of music all gets renamed and dumped into the LOST.DIR folder. 4Gb of music has totally disappeared from the Sdcard. I dont know where that went?
I tried formatting the card with multiple programmes on my laptop but problems still occur. Tried checking the disk for errors....nothing. Tried different music players.
The SDcard works perfect in my laptop. I can add and remove files no problem, which really confuses me. I also tried an 8gb class 6 Sdcard in the player and it has been working flawlessly.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is the SD card corrupt? Is poweramp at fault? Is it the player itself? Do I return the card to Amazon for a replacement?
Really sorry for the questions and long post but this is driving me crazy. Hopefully somebody can give some advice.
Thanks.
Regarding the 59.4 Gb, that's normal. IIRC it's a mixture of the overhead of the file system and the difference between the marketing definition of Gigabyte and the technical definition of it.
Regarding your other problems, I did manage to find some other people having similar issues with different devices:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-s3-samsungs-insane-response.html#post2509743
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/240489-sd-card-unmounting-itself.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13726990
Do those sound similar to what you're experiencing?
I also have bought it from Amazon UK. The manual clearly says that 32G is the max it can accept. Have you tried partitioning the new card in two slices of 32G each?
I also would like to know if you have unmounted the old card safely and how you have recreated the filesystem structure on the new card. Thanks
In regard to your SD card mounting issue, my modification for swapping the mounting location of internal memory with your external SD card at boot may be able to fix your issue. Here is a link to my post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234907. I really hope this helps!

[Q] Note 3 Gallery Help!

Hi, I'm new to Andriod and a proud owner for a shiny new Note 3. I've come over from Apple after years of loyalty and slowly adjusting so please do bear with me!
So I have a Note 3 with a 64gb Samsung class 10 memory card. The issue I have is the gallery pictures I've transferred over have this grey thunderbolt icon and will not open at all on my phone or the computer. Naturally I formatted the card and started again which worked until I rebooted and boom again same problem.
Any ideas? I've searched on google and nothing appears to give me any relief. If it helps the pics are from my iPhone which I simply copied across by moving to the micro sd card
Attached is an image hope it helps!
Thanks in advance!

What is the file extension of the pictures? I think it's a compatibility issue. But first, make sure the memory card is virus free. It is possible that files may be corrupted or damaged because of virus.
They're JPEG files, as mentioned they showed up just fine then after the reboot they started misbehaving. Virus free? Please elaborate and any suggestions as to what I can do?

Gallery always reloads thumbnails even though they are cached

hi guys,
I have seen this occurring quite often with a new SD card that i purchased like 2 months ago for my S5, the card is Samsung 64 GB Evo MicroSDXC UHS-I Grade 1 Class 10 Memory Card, amazon link https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J29FF4G.
Even if i slowly browse with the gallery viewer so thumbs are generated, at some point down the line, say next week i browse again the gallery, then thumbnails seem to be loaded one by one again.
If i go to Application Manager > Gallery, i can see that under Cache i have 132 MB, checked just now, which seem to me that they are cached so shouldnt do it all again?
My wife's S5 has my old 32GB card (slower than my new one) which is even old from a few years ago and on her phone the cache seems to work, sometimes it's maybe with the empty thumbs but then it quickly loads them all up - under "gallery app", cache reads same at around 105-110 MB there.
One difference on my phone is that i have way more photos all in one folder, i also tried having many folders.. no change (I have around 2500 photos) than the other phone, so maybe that's the issue? I tried several times to empty cache, dalvik cache but no difference whatsoever..phones are identical, rooted, etc.
thanks,
Gab
anyone????
just checking.......shall i delete some photos? tnxx
