Comparison of Hero based Custom ROM's - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I'm not sure if others would see the value in this at all, but I think it'd be handy to maybe have a sticky thread with all the Custom Hero ROMs that are available and the features in each, as well as maybe the latest revision Notes.
If the scene for the Hero becomes anywhere near as big as the Dream/Magic one apart from trying all the ROM's it's quite difficult to know what each does, how it differs from the other offerings, and weather its built for speed (glorious speed), features or experimental to show off new features in upcoming firmware, etc.
Am I barking up the wrong tree here, or does anyone else think this may be a handy feature?

I think this is a good idea (providing we do get a large number of roms). I struggle to read through the dream rom forums.

This would be....
...awesome.

good idea. we have 2 ROMs now I read in one of the post someone else is going to be building another one too.

Yea, I was going to try my hand at a little ROM cooking as well, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to produce anything that Modaco/Drizzy can't. Will see when I work out all the parts of the ROM and how to sign it etc.
Failing that, for the time being, when they release new versions I'll try my hand at updaing this forum thread to suit the latest versions and show difference between the two (or more)!

Having a stickied thread that lists custom ROMs and their features and descriptions as well as links to them would be very welcome yes. I've tried Modaco 2.1 and DDR v2.0 already and Im sure I'll try many more as they appear.

So many damn roms... Which to choose ?

I'm completely baffled by the ammount of roms available for this device.
How do I decide which one to use ?
Any personal experience from others that have used multiple roms ?
Which ones do you like the most ?
What should I be looking for ?
Thanks.
I've tried them all and Proven ROM is my favorite without question. Followed closely by Romeos and then NATF's ROM.
It's a personal preference thing anyways, just pick one and try it You'll probably try them all before you finally figure out what you're happy with.
My rule of thumb, just pick the one with the most viewed counts
Proven ROM is fast and reliable - I use 1.03. Having tried most ROM's available for the available for the TP, in my opinion Proven is your man and 1.03 is simply magnificient.

Same here, you can try proven if you like speed and extra tf3d tabs etc,if you may not like that you can use romeOs.
Build 19971/19974 are based on stable and official roms and the difference is mostly in what applications and languages are included. Builds like 20757 are experimental ones and may contain unstable applications and components from for instance the Touch HD. So you have a choice - live on the edge, or go for something that will definitely work, regardless. PROven rom looks interesting for instance, but I'll wait for another couple of revisions until qsqa has worked all the kinks out.
afaik 20757 is an official, stable build from HTC (released for touch pro hd)
when porting is done correctly, no device-dependant components are upgraded, only the underlying operating system.. so providing the porting is done correctly, no unstable applications and components from other devices will be brought in as a result Again assuming the source ROM is an officially released base.. there are plenty of others that are not!

so true! lol
PROven rom 1.03 is the best in my case, now will test 1.04. Is difficult to stay in one with the fast upgrades by the chefs.
go nuts..flash em all!
see which one u like the best.
i do the whole trial and error thing.
at the moment im using the one in my sig..but that'll change within the next 24hrs.

The choice of ROM is very personal, and depends upon your needs.
I myself am using the latest build of ROMeOS, and its simply great.
This rom is very fast, responsive, has nice apps and all the great registry tweaks included. On top of that, monx® is providing us with regular updates, and support (even for Rom's with languages totally 'new' to him) you only expect from paying services. Just take a quick look @ the ROMeOS topics, and you'll be amazed...
Maybe you could add a poll to your topic?
Use the most used ROMs so you can get a clear view....

just a small request to some of the cooks on these here forums

Hi all
first off let me just commend EVERYONE on xda-devs for the work they have put in to make this such a great site/resource/info store
I've been using xda-devs ever since i got my very first htc voyager device, then onto various other smartphones and then i discovered the wonderful world of ppc, way back with himalaya, through to magician/charmer/prophet/wizard/hermes and now of course, RAPHAEL!!!
if you've gotten this far then i thank you for listening to me rambling on
my request is simple:
Is it possible to add a poll to each of the threads for the roms with simple 'criteria' like:
Is this rom FAST
Is this rom STABLE
Good rom?
not so good rom?
simply because, i am hoping this will help avoid some of the most common 'what rom shall i flash' question and also it will give some sort of pointer as to some of the main points of the rom
its just a suggestion, i'd love to know what you all think of it and if it ever comes to fruition!
many thanks to all at RAPHAEL!
My Opinion: No
All the 4 points you mention are subjective...
The only way to find out is to try it yourself, and if that means flashing different rom's
and restoring your favourite programs, use UC or put them together in a directory on your sd card.
You can always get an idea by scrolling trough a thread, that's what I do with 30 messages on a page
Each ROM is very different, and a poll wouldn't work. Just the poll in the radio flashing thread, it doesn't really mean a lot as it's all dependant.
It's worth spending the time and flashing as many ROMs as it takes to get the one you want. I've flashed over 15 ROMs trying to find one I like...
Not only is it subjective, it is quite frankly dumb (if you'll pardon the term)
Every chef endeavors to produce a quality ROM, if bugs appear, they are usually fixed fairly quickly with an updated version (hopefully). Every ROM is a work in progress and the only time the Chef finish it, is when he becomes tired of attempting to improve it.
The best you could ask for is a poll in a separate thread that asks for what ROM you are running and if they follow up post with what they like and don't like about it. However, you will find Flashing Junkies here that will often flash a new ROM weekly if not more often... There would need to be a new poll every week/month and who has that much time.
Having recently purchased a Fuze myself, let me tell you what I did here as a complete newbie:
Sized up the available ROMs and prominent chefs using the wiki and this forum.
Scanned through threads here to figure out who was doing what.
Looked up the various chefs to see what else they've done here at XDA
Made my decision.
As a chef myself, I can say that everything is subjective. There really is no simple way to find the best ROM. The good news is that I found what I was looking for in a single evening.
I think its a descent idea if the Chefs put each new ROM Version in a new thread. If someone releases version 1.0 and it is buggy they may get a bad poll rating. Then by version 2.0 it may be the best ROM ever, but due to all the early bad ratings it would make their overall "score" low.
Anyways this isn't a competition. If we start ranking and voting on the best ROM, it would make other ROM makers give up. People would say ROM-ABC and ROM-123 are the 2 best ROMS and no one can top them. Then all the other Chef's give up and we only have 2 ROM choices. Then these 2 ROM Makers have no competition so their work gets stagnant and they only release new ROMs ever 6 months. Then before you know it we are living in the world of Microsoft and Apple.

[Q] Main difference in Roms?

So I thought there was a thread on this but I can't find it.
What is the actual behind the scenes difference in the Roms being put out besides theming?
I don't want a "this rom is better" answer, that's not what this is about. I don't want to disrespect anyones work, I am just curious as to what each team/person does different to post so many Roms. From the uneducated eye(mine) one would think you would post one Rom per team and then post the rest in the theme section.
They usually have the details on the first post, a lot of them explain what the variants are all about.
I am not totally up on the roms in the last week or so, But, all the roms will be using KA5,6 or 7 kernel and or KB1 (K=2011, A= Jan 5= 5th day etc.). That said some are structured to be faster removing some of the misc small routines, overclocked, or expanded memory. Some have as internal ram @ 300-310mb, some 335-340mb, some 350-360mb. Now, that may be important if you are gaming with the phone but, for most things not much change will be noticed if any. Some use Supercurio based, some use morfic based, some use Eugene based kernels or some just customized based on a bit of each or their own cooking.
The real crux is do ALL the things that are expected to work ,,,, work. E.G. Phone, WIFI, Bluetooth, Stereo, headphones, mp3-4 player, facebook, battery, twitter, mms, email, syncing, camera, both video and snapshot, GPS....etc. Now if All those are equal, then the theming and some of the other special touches are trademark of a given developer.
Some roms are just better structured and allow more altering than others, those would be the Axura, Einherjar roms and some of the Team Whiskey roms.
The reason why some will say this rom is great and that one I think has more to do with the date it was built. The problem with all the phones is the parts and sub assemblies are subbed out. So, July 2010 might work flawlessly for one rom but not the other and one phone made in Nov 2010 might be vice-versa
So, all the Long Winded diatribe above it comes down to this, it really is personal choice and the phone you have and how the custom rom works on that phone. The only real 2 differences I have seen with all the roms as distinct is the Axura has remarkable battery life and the rom has a great GPS fresh out of a new flash, other than that, I found no differences in anything else.
But remember that is just my studied observation from my 2 Vibrants.

Yea, I guess i should further explain, this isn't to see which rom I want. I am not new to flashing so I have a general familiarity to all of them. I more just wanted to further my education on the actual behind the scenes aspects of these Roms and what the developers actually DO to make their Rom THEIR Rom besides custom themes.
To further your point though and also back up my question lets look at axuras change log. most of it consists of theme this or that update programs remove this or that. Then a tiny "framework tweak" "build.prop mod" is thrown in.
Specifically I was asking what do the devs do different in that area which I am assuming is the basis of the whole rom correct?
Also, I am not speaking of the miui or cm7 type ports but more of axura, bionix, trigger ect... all that are usually upgraded to the same kernals and modem in their roms anyway.

Looking for minimalistic ROM

Hi All,
I am new to flashing custom ROMs onto my phone but wish to give it a try but there seems to be tons of different variants, all of which look to be pretty much the same which I guess only goes to show my ignorance here.
I am looking for a minimal ROM to use with my SGSII. What I would like it to do is:
Make Calls(obviously)
Use WiFi(inc WiFi diect)
Bluetooth
Good Camera
FM Radio
I dont need it to do much else apart from this. I'm not bothered about being able to overclock or re-theme etc. I just want something that is fast and stable with minimal features.
Can anyone advise a range of ROMs for me to look into?
We don't allow these threads for a lot of reasons not the least of which is we get several of these per day. I just closed one a few minutes ago.
Please just read the development sections and try ROMs until you find one that meets your criteria.
Thanks

Custom Kitkat ROM with empasis on battery life, or 4.x emulation for 1 app?

So I'll just pick one at random then? Thanks for the help...
There is a thread with links to all the stock firmware releases. But downgrading has been debated if its even possible. The procedure is detailed in a couple different posts from what I've read. I doubt you will be able to run a kk ROM with the a LL bootloader and modem.
Sent from my SM-G900T
There are still Cyanogenmod 11 (KitKat) builds in the unified development section, that's probably your best bet. As mgp53 pointed out it's difficult if not downright impossible to downgrade android versions using the official firmware, if you're already on 5.1.1

Thanks so much! I am pouring through it now... might take a bit since I don't see a column for version number http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development#romList but I'll just sort by latest release and click on every single link manually till I see a 4.x that isn't a buggy PoS. I was originally hoping to steer clear of AOSP/CM because I heard the battery life isn't as good as TW or "superslim" style stripped-down stock fws, but at this point I will take what I can get. I've had terrible luck getting any kind of answers across multiple subforums on this site. Your post was the most useful by far. Thanks again.
Incoming rant...
It really is a shame that 1) the download links on the 600+ Infinity ROM thread are all dead, 2) SlimROM doesn't seem to exist in any meanful/useable state for the s5 even though they have tons of devices including the s3/s4, 3) Sick n Twi5ted for 4.x is a buggy PoS, 4) Liquidsmooth has major missing features such as no camera (You thought releasing a ROM on a 16megapixel flagship device with no camera function was OK enough to start asking for donations and then never got around to adding support for the camera? At least have the decency to put a list of major bugs and missing features in the OP. It is debateably fraudulent to put a donate button where the 'Major Issues' section should be and then not even have a disclaimer.
Users of this site really ought not to have to pour through 60-600 pages to find out major flaws on a ROM. In all the dozens of threads I've sifted through over the past week there was exactly ONE who was up front and honest including a section devoted to missing features/major bugs.
/end_rant
On the bright side, all this madness had led me to seriously consider developing my own ROM and that would probably be a good thing for me in general to learn anyway. Or alternatively I could create a website devoted to archiving older ROMs since there seems to be quite a few that have gone missing here. (think oldversion.com circa 2005)
Whatever I decide to contribute, there certainly is room for a lot of it here.
android6 greatly improved idle battery life, plus you can underclock the cpu if you have root
