After seeing lots of different guides and struggling to understand them I have compiled a concise and easy to follow guide on fastboot, root, recovery, roms and ADB including lots of download links.
The idea is to stop people having to search high and low for a guide on how to do something and to provide easy to follow guides with no assumptions. Sort of like a central resource. This could be downloaded to your device and then all the download links are available wherever you are.
Most of it is my own work with inspiration taken from XDA and Modaco. Both forums have done a lot to help me so I thought it was time I gave back.
If you have any comments, corrections or suggestions then please email me at the email address in the attached document.

One thing though, I appear to be missing a clockworkmod recovery? There are 4 on the guide (one from Koush's recovery and 3 from the clockworkmod guide sticky(2 on first page and 1 on page 3)). Is there another version somewhere or is it just those 4?

Hi, thanks for the guide but am stuck on one part. I want to basically install a custom recovery and am on Android 2.1.
The guide says to browse the Streaks folder via fastboot in a command prompt window, but how do you do that?
C and D drives are to do with the pc partitions but their are no others popping up when in Fastboot mode so am a little confused their.
"Navigate to your C:\streak folder by typing cd C:\streak and hitting Enter....."
I think he means use the command prompt to browse the folder that you downloaded and have named "Streak" so on the cmd, type "cd C:\streak" then enter and it should take you to the streak folder on your C drive which should have all the fastboot tools etc, at which point you can run the fastboot command. Am I right?

I'm new to Android and I got the gist of things by reading most of the threads on the Dell streak, but never truely understood what exactly was needed to flash ROM's, recovery's etc until I read your guide and it has made pretty much everything clear now....though I do still have a couple of questions
Firstly, just to clear things up in my mind, I know we use fastboot commands to install recovery images, but can we also use these commands to install actual ROM updates? If so, what is the difference between updating via the fastboot tool and via the recovery mode?
Secondly, I take it that we use stock recovery's for official ROM's and custom recovery's for custom ROM's, the question is, are there specific custom recovery's for specific custom ROM's or will any custom recovery work with any custom made ROM?
And lastly, which is required for leaked ROM's? Stock Recovery?

There won't be matching custom recovery/rom's. Just install the clockwork one and it will work fine.
hi Radddogg, thanks for your efforts.. but i went thru your pdf file, and tried so many times, just couldn't get yours to work.. i must have removed/replaced my battery like 50 times.. but i finally got mine to work.
i'm on 1.6 build 3883.. i kept getting the E:Can't find MISC error or blank screen trying the clock recovery 1.8.1.7, or your stock recovery.
Finally, what i did was:
1. load the 3883 superboot

2. load the 4399 recovery

3. load the 4399 pkg

I'm not sure what you were trying to do as you didn't say but one thing I've found is that updates and recoveries are very build dependant and have to be done in order of build number. I'm not sure why you couldn't do what you wanted off the pdf as the downloads you posted are all available off my pdf?
The streak is definitely less user friendly than HTCs
Oh and is there a copy of the 3883 pkg anywhere I can add to the pdf?
sorry, i don't have a 3883 copy.
What was different was the sequence that i did it, and the versions to use.
Going thru your pdf, i followed point by point starting from point 1.. and i'm supposed to, after starting fastboot.. to do this
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
But i get the blank screen. Not sure why, but i guessing i had to use this
fastboot –i 0x413c
for the recovery.img so i tried this but still not working. Maybe the recovery.img is not 4399 version.. and because i was on 3883, i had to use 4399?
When i tried
fastboot –i 0x413c flash recovery recovery-clockwork-streak.img
It worked, but then i get the "E:Can't find MISC" error. I'm guessing my pkg was the 8105 instead of the 4399. So tried loading 4399 pkg but same error. The clockwork thing didn't work for me.
Anyway, after trial and error many times, long story short, i downloaded the 4399 recovery and did this
fastboot –i 0x413c flash recovery recovery4399.img
load the 4399 pkg
load the 8105 pkg
and it finally worked. Would've helped if you had mentioned what version to use or that i had to load the 2 different versions of the pkg in sequence or maybe its just me. I didn't know.. i'm an android newbie..

So guys, I'm new to this and thought I would jump in at the deep end.
I unlocked my HTC One X+ easily and set about rooting.
I've got TWRP installed but it keeps telling me it needs to install superuser before it can root.
I have totally wiped the phone, how come if Im not rooted?
How do I get an OS and indeed the kernel or ROM onto the phone?
Its and International OX+, I've got the right kernel... what do I need to do?
It was locked to O2 if that makes a difference
I followed the instruction in Hasson but then wiped the OS
I know its a simple procedure but can someone walk me through it please

If you wiped as you said, you need to push with adb a rom of your choice to the internal memory of the phone and then install it within twrp.
Please read instructions 2 or 3 times before attempting anything, seems like you rushed and now you're temporarily without phone till you flash a rom on it again. I doubt any root guide tells you to wipe the phone, your own fault on this.
To sum it up:
Put a rom's zip of your choice in the internal memory with adb push
flash the rom within the twrp recovery (install option)
flash the kernel for the specific rom with fastboot (each rom has a guide and download for it)
You can now search about it more easily, plenty of posts and info about this.

This is all because I hated the Sense 5 update, indeed Im till looking for the Sense 4 ROM fo HOX+

Sigh, if you had read carefully you'd know that boot.img need to be flashed through fastboot and not from recovery. Every rom has this info or a batch file for this.
So what exactly are you trying to do? Root the stock rom that came originally with the phone or installing a custom rom?

I see, the easiest ways would be to use a custom rom now. For example, the one you already got the kernel from(android revolution hd)
To root you dont need to install a kernel... just to flash the supersu zip. Using a custom rom's kernel with stock rom might not be a good idea.
Another simple way would be to restore stock rom back to start and try rooting again, this time reading everything carefully
So the two easiest ways i think:
1) flash a custom rom following the instructions they provide in the initial posts for that rom
2) run the o2 correspondent RUU to restore stock rom (you'd need to relock the bootloader), also reading carefully posts in the forum about restoring to stock
Without getting into too much detail, these are the simplest options.
All the info required to do these are on these forums

Well have installed SDK correctly but device is not seen, no serial, nothing.
I can get it to fastboot though, however I don't know any commands so I cant get it to work

Please be as technical as you like, I'm fairly tech-savvy (I have CFW on my PSP, I build my own computers and have flashed/cfw various devices in the past) if I don't understand I can google it, but I need to know WHAT to google first and I'm a bit lost...! :good:
I have stock TF201 which is getting pretty painful despite a recent re-install. I've noticed that there is still no real idea as to if/when KitKat will be rolled out for it and was rather p!ssed off to see my missus's Nexus 7 (2012 version!) get 4.4.3 today!
I've done a lot of googling and forum reading but I'm a little confused as to the best route to go...
Having come across the "one-click method to root" using motochopper (and/or other methods) would it then be possible to install 4.4.2 for example using CM11 and a guide such as this (google "Install Android 4.4.2 KitKat on Asus Transformer Prime TF201" as I can't post URLs) - or will this only work for OFW release like 4.2?
In summary, am I missing the point (I get the feeling I may need to be unlocked as well to have a custom recovery?), THEN root etc...
Long and short is I'm not after doing anything crazy other than getting my TF201 to the latest STABLE(ish) version of Android. I understand the risks of bricking, CFW/OFW & OTA etc. I guess I'm basically after a simple list of steps (or pointing at the relevant thread) to achieve this - from the guides I've seen I have to unlock, root and then go down the CM11 route but I want to know if I can get there more easily/safely using one-click root or another method for example?
All advice gratefully received!

Yep, that's the only route to custom ROM and vital you make NVFlash backups:
1. Unlock device using the official tool from Asus website - its says "for ICS" but works fine on JB.
2. Assuming you are on the latest official stock JellyBean (Asus v 10.4.2.18) then go get the latest TWRP 2.6 for TF201 JB from the bottom of this page: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/tf201 Flash that blob using fastboot following the instructions in the section titled "Download - Recovery Image / Fastboot Method (using ICS or JB Asus bootloader)" on this page: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/93.
3. Follow the instructions in the tutorial here for making NVFlash backups: http://matthill.eu/android/transform...ybean-nvflash/
4. You are now ready flash a custom ROM of your choice. If you really want to go straight to KK then my advice would be to look no further than CROMBi-kk: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2773812. You will get plenty of help here from people who know about the tf201. Read the whole thread but pay particular attention to post #4 where Josh has written a step by step guide for people starting from scratch.
Finally, though you are pretty safe now with your NVFlash backups and even though you are well experiences at flashing, follow all the instructions to the letter and avoid the sadly well tested routes to brick. I don't believe there is another android device in current use that is so easy to brick as the prime.

Restorer thanks for the instructions...like the title I am about to take the "plunge" and flash this Prime and I want to got to KK. Just one thing.. below you state: "4. You are now ready flash a custom ROM of your choice. If you really want to go straight to KK then my advice would be to look no further than CROMBi-kk: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2773812. " but when I go to the link it says that I must be on Hairybean and the bootloader 4.2.1. I am currently on the stock 10.4.2.18 and downloaded the unlock v6 .apk file from Asus to do the bootloader "unlocking" Just for the sake of clarity...I am new to this...should I still unlock using the Asus util and once done then do the Hairybean update? which will in turn upgrade the bootloader (10.6.1.27.1)?

Yes, you can't flash anything until the device is unlocked and you have installed a TWRP recovery.
But make sure to then make your NVFlash backups and once you have those files safely stored go straight on to follow Josh's step-by-step guide for in post #4 of the ROM thread. His guide was written specifically for TF201 people coming from stock. Follow it to the letter but be sure to ask if there is something you don't understand.

Sorry just one more question, since I have a TF201 and and want to use this ROM, it seems I am essentially turning my Prime into aTF300, which is ok, now right after unlocking the boot loader and then running TWRP (2.7 TF300) it is at this point I flash the hairybean update or do the creation & backing up for NVFlash first then the hairybean?...sorry for the elemental question...just want to be sure!

No you're not a TF300 yet! Unlock then flash the latest TWRP version for TF201 from the page I linked to (still 2.6). Then do your NVFlash backups. Then you can pick up Josh's guide again where you flash "Upgrade Hairybean 2.31 (4.2.1) Bootloader & TWRP (2.5).zip". It's just the guide assumes you already have your backups .

Hey restorer this can all be done on a non-root device correct? Should root first if so what is the best way you suggest ...read a little something about motochopper.?

Have a possible issue when trying to after renaming the original file flat_tf201 (image file) to twrp.blob it looks like on the windows 7 side it sent it fine but on the tablet I did not see the "blue bar". So worried it did not send I tried it again and got the "error cannot open twrp.blob" when I did a dir of the fastboot directory it is there but noticed is the command prompt after renaming (per instructions from TWRP) the full file name was twrp.blob.img should not matter but renamed it (from command prompt) w/o the .img extension still would not send.
I am thinking eventhough it initially looked like it did send (based on output in command prompt initially) is it possible I missed the blue bar on the tablet?... Should I have seen it? Does it take awhile?
The tablet shows "starting Fastboot USB download protocol"
any help what be appreciated

Why rename the the .img file to a .blob file ?
Not really the best thing you could do .....
Just boot to fastboot and run the command

fastboot flash recovery flatline_tf201.img
The blue bar will show up and fill on the write part of the command ...
Once that is done do this command .....

fastboot reboot-bootloader
Let the tablet reboot into bootloader and VOL up on RCK
Now your golden ......
Make sure you understand what need to be done in flatline ...

No need to root first - the custom ROM you will be installing will be rooted.

Sounds like you have downloaded (and renamed) the .img file and not the .blob file! "openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-tf201-JB.blob" is the one you want if you are follwoing the instructions on the TWRP page I linked you too. The blob file Josh refers to is the one in this zip file and has a shorter name. You can either use Josh's instructions or TWRP's but not a mixture of the two
@lj50036 I think he referring to the instructions from TWRP on the downloads page which say to rename the file to a shorter form.
@tim2min don't let this renaming stuff confuse you - TWRP are only suggesting it because their full names are so long and prone to error when you are typing them out!
EDIT: Sorry, I hadn't realised Josh had already prepared and renamed the files for you. Just use all 3 of his files contained in his zip and not from my links or you may get further confused.

Just an observation Restorer I note that you said never to select "Wipe Data" in the boot menu but in Josh step by step he suggested to do that which can take a while. In this case it ok to do it since we are putting on a new ROM. I have my backups (blob files) as well as the NVFlash file

How is this saying anything about wiping from bootloader ?
I am sure it say NOW ENTER RECOVERY ....
But maybe I missed something or maybe you did ....

Man it was going so well until my computer could no longer see my tablet via USB! so I can now longer use FASTBOOT because the device is not found. This happen right after flashing Hariybean and I was about to run"
Interesting my Win7 computer says that it sees the Asus device:but fastboot does not see it. Also initially the it saw it as an APX device but no longer so I can not do the next step which is to adb reboot-bootloader and then do flash @ne0zone75 TWRP recovery per the instuctions. I have tried re-pointing to the Universal Naked drivers trying to select a diffrent drvier but to no avail. looks like the tablet can no longer communicate to the computer. I will copy the contents of the fastboot directory to another computer and see if that will work
any ideas?

Sounds like another windows driver issue .....
I really cant help much here as I dont use windows ...
But there is a short term solution at least to get you booted up ....
@ne0zone75's flashable zip twrp
Download this and move it into your folder that contains the fastboot.exe ... Then rename it to twrp.zip
Then boot into the recovery and run this command from CMD window

adb push twrp.zip /sdcard
Let that happen should not take long, find the zip file under install and flash it .....
YOU MUST DO A REBOOT AFTER THIS NOT JUST A REBOOT INTO BOOTLOADER ...
So lets run this command ....

adb reboot
Let it fully boot into a bootloop then with the buttons get back to the bootloader screen and enter RCK ...
then once you have done that continue on your way ....
Let me know this works for you ....

Josh has answered you. But this is another fine example of why people here keep banging on about reading things carefully and then following instructions to the letter .
Taking the Plunge
Well, after some "trying" moments I got this ROM on the Prime!...must say extremely excited seems like my TF201 has more than just a "heartbeat" left in her, shoot she may be able to run hard a little longer!. I must admit some EXTREME anxiety occured and I really got scared when after flashing hairybean/bootloader my computer could not find/see my tablet AT ALL!!. This lost of connection was madddding especially when Windows would add the tablet in device manager and you would hear the computer chime every time I connected/disconnect the USB cable from the computer while the other end was in the tablet. I had to fuss around with Android APD Interface/Android APX drivers until my computer settled on one that actually worked after running c:\fastboot>fastboot devices 50x's and if finally saw my tablet I literally shedded a tear, this is definetely not for the faint of heart...lol Needless to say I hurried up and finished going down the instructions just for fear my computer might "inexplicably " loose connection again!....lol
Many thanks to Restorer for chiming in with my question also Josh (especially for the step by step instructions) also to the whole team that made this ROM!
Just a question though: If you wanted to change the color theme on boot up (which now shows in blue "CROMBi-KK") how would I go about that?

So i just decided to join the rest of the world and get myself a rectangle. so i researched the 1 to 200 dollar range for weeks until i found my new shiny metal friend with great specs and a price that wouldn't keep me up at night. the le max 2 x829. but i love tech and was really looking forward to pushing this phone and learn about all it could do! i was really excited.
Until i started to learn about the many confusing programs needed to install custom roms or make a recovery file. things like that All of which need like 6 different programs all of which seem to need some other program in order to functional. I can't seem to even find a starting point! I HAVE NEVER FELT THIS STUPID IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Someone please help. what programs do i need for a new os ? How does adb fit into the chain of programs needed to mod android? is twrp the first program needed? how does it all sort...fit to gather? Thanks for any help!

Long story short:
- Connect the phone to the PC and install the drivers (including ADB)
- Unlock bootloader (usually it's already unlocked)
- Download TWRP on your PC
- Install TWRP following the developer's steps
- Download your custom ROM
- Put the ROM on the internal memory
- Boot into TWRP
- Install the new ROM according to the instructions given by the developer and you're done...

including adb? what other drivers do i need? xposed? supersu? ...i have done my research by the way...its just not making alot of sense..thats all. i know all you old pros have probably been at it for years but i never even held a smartphone until 6 days ago ha ha

Also how do you download twrp on you're pc ? it won't let me i have it on my phone but it just keeps leading me to a website to download again.

Do you have it installed on the phone or just downloaded? If it's installed, jump over that step. If it's just downloaded, connect the phone to the pc by cable, transfer the files :cyclops:

2.2 (Alternative) Minimal ADB and Fastboot. I've used this one.
2.3 (Alternative) ADB and Fastboot (newer) or Universal ADB and Fastboot (older) from the same dev.
OBS: I'm not sure if the toolkit requires or not one of these options to work properly or if it already does this task.3. Download TWRP (on your computer).
3.1 Follow the instructions from the official page. In short, put the img into the ADB folder.4. Follow the commands in the the tutorial mentioned.
4.1 In short, unlock the bootloader, boot twrp, complete backup, reboot into the system, copy the backup to your PC/Cloud service, get back to fastboot mode, flash twrp, then flash your ROM.

more questions....twrp will only load onto my phone and not my pc? also there are no adb driver folders just an exe. what do i do about that?
someone tell me how to delete this thread...i am just going to sell my smartphone i can't look at it anymore. every thing i try to do with it it resists every single inch of the way. nothing works according to instructions. i thought this would be fun but its hell... i give up! ...it wins going to trade this thing for the first 30 dollar burner phone i can find
Huge drama for nothing. Sell the thing, it's obviously not for you. If you can't follow some simple instructions, then it's better to sell it to some guy who likes to try at least.

maybe they are laid out to be simple but nothing is working as instructed. i have been at it for a week . so far installing firefox is the best i can seem to do lol simple? theres nothing simple about the gangbang of programs you need to do stuff on these phones. none of which can actually be compelled to function under any circumstances at least for me.

If you are not familiar with giving commands with command prompt, installing drivers and needed software (android studio or minimal adb install) then you are in for a challenge, if you are not willing to learn its better to sell the phone or use it with de preinstalled android.
i find myself quite skilled( have flashed several brands of phoned in the last 5 years) and it took me a couple of days to figure out what to do and how to install twrp and my first rom, there are no one click shortcuts for this phone

Did you try watching different videos to have a big picture of the process? It would be the first step. Even if you don't understand English, simply watch it. You'll see what would happen after each action.
Then check the written tutorial. Not a big issue at all. Really. Even for newbies, I've been one when I had a Galaxy 5, my first android that doesn't even needed to flash a custom ROM.
Whether you think you can, whether you think you can't, you're right.
The command to load the TWRP will be done on your PC, however, only your phone will load it. In short, you'll be commanding your phone through your PC.
When you install Minimal ADB and Fastboot, it will install its files in a default folder. Inside its default folder is where you should place the TWRP image.

It's been a while since I have messed with any of this stuff. I have done this before but I need a reminder how to finish out the process, since I don't want to miss a step and break something.
I have ADB/Fastboot setup, my bootloader is unlocked, my device can be detected with both `adb devices` and `fastboot devices`, backup has been saved, and I have the official build zip file. I'm just not sure what commands I need to enter and in what order to flash to the earlier build properly. Sorry for such a basic question, I can't seem to find the tutorial I followed the first time through this.

is the last Android 10 flash-pack, in very short just use flash-all and you are good to go
