So guys, I'm new to this and thought I would jump in at the deep end.
I unlocked my HTC One X+ easily and set about rooting.
I've got TWRP installed but it keeps telling me it needs to install superuser before it can root.
I have totally wiped the phone, how come if Im not rooted?
How do I get an OS and indeed the kernel or ROM onto the phone?
Its and International OX+, I've got the right kernel... what do I need to do?
It was locked to O2 if that makes a difference
I followed the instruction in Hasson but then wiped the OS
I know its a simple procedure but can someone walk me through it please
So I've downloaded Kernel 3.1.10-ge7581e4
I have no idea what to do next, come on guys I know its not difficult for you guys.

If you wiped as you said, you need to push with adb a rom of your choice to the internal memory of the phone and then install it within twrp.
Please read instructions 2 or 3 times before attempting anything, seems like you rushed and now you're temporarily without phone till you flash a rom on it again. I doubt any root guide tells you to wipe the phone, your own fault on this.
To sum it up:
Put a rom's zip of your choice in the internal memory with adb push
flash the rom within the twrp recovery (install option)
flash the kernel for the specific rom with fastboot (each rom has a guide and download for it)
You can now search about it more easily, plenty of posts and info about this.

Sigh, if you had read carefully you'd know that boot.img need to be flashed through fastboot and not from recovery. Every rom has this info or a batch file for this.
So what exactly are you trying to do? Root the stock rom that came originally with the phone or installing a custom rom?

I see, the easiest ways would be to use a custom rom now. For example, the one you already got the kernel from(android revolution hd)
To root you dont need to install a kernel... just to flash the supersu zip. Using a custom rom's kernel with stock rom might not be a good idea.
Another simple way would be to restore stock rom back to start and try rooting again, this time reading everything carefully
So the two easiest ways i think:
1) flash a custom rom following the instructions they provide in the initial posts for that rom
2) run the o2 correspondent RUU to restore stock rom (you'd need to relock the bootloader), also reading carefully posts in the forum about restoring to stock
Without getting into too much detail, these are the simplest options.

So have managed to install superuser and root my phone, all instructions for doing this were wrong including Hassoon, had to have the phone in System screen to do it, not bootloader or recovery.
Now cant get adb to push file to sdcard...

Well, the instructions are dire but after 10 days of persistance have installed Android Revolution HD 8, finally my phone is up and running better than the bloated os that came with the phone so, you can call this thread resolved.

Follow the second link above.
You will need to restore the factory system.img using TWRP (exFAT or NTFS for external USB as file is > 4GB).
This puts the modified system (root) back to stock so the update will run successfully.
Flash the original recovery for you system version too.
Then you can accept the OTA and then root the phone again.

To restore your clean system backup to accept OTAs, you must use fastboot. If you are S-ON, you must be in download mode.
-copy your clean system.emmc.win to your adb/fastboot folder on your pc
-boot into download mode

In that case, what is a system.emmc.win?
Then I flash the original recovery...what are you refering to when you say "original recovery"?
After that my phone should be locked again and I can go to that second link, download the latest firmware and flash it. And then I can unlock and root my phone again.

I would just run the official RUU, it's a one shot process will take care of everything including the radios. Much easier than messing around, just make sure you are S-OFF before you do it. When it's done just flash the latest TWRP and install your rom you will be done.

That was what I ended up doing. Had few bumps on the way but I managed to get everything working. Thanks for the help everyone!

hi sim I have a question the only thing I got to make sure is that the phone is S-OFF and nothing will happen because I read that also the bootlooder had to be lock again so I'm not sure
Hey guys! Unfortunately I bricked my new HTC Desire 626s while fiddling around with xposed for lollipop after successfully rooting the phone and installing cyanogen recovery. I think if I flash the stock rom on the phone through either adb or cyanogen recovery I can unbrick it, but I have been unsuccessful in finding this file on the internet. Would anyone care to give me a link or upload the stock firmware/rom of this phone? It would really help me out, thank you!
You have to make sure the firmware is the same version or newer than the one currently on the phone as well as which carrier or region the phone is from. Without that, can't provide the correct file to download.

Was just thinking about this...if you soft bricked after attempting to install Xposed, and nothing else, you should be able to get out of it by flashing the xposed uninstaller zip. If that does not work, stay tuned to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-626/help/htc-desire-626s-root-recovery-t3169169 as there are some others at the end of the thread in a similar predicament. It does not appear that there is an official RUU yet for the Metro version, only the T-Mobile version, and they are not compatible. Just try the uninstaller zip first because that would be the easiest thing to try and should only take a couple of minutes.

I tried this before my phone got ****ed and it worked:good:! If you can help me dude that'd be great. After uninstalling or changing some stuff in priv-app on my HTC Desire 626s, when I rebooted, it would just stay in a boot loop with the optimizing app message. Any ideas?
What did you uninstall? I would ask for those apps in that thread and use a flashable zip and install via TWRP. You might also try clearing caches and/or resetting the phone again. It DOES take a long time to optimize the apps after wiping stuff as well, so sometimes it is a matter of being patient.
This is why I ALWAYS recommend to freeze apps vs uninstalling. Uninstalling them does not get you any usable space back, so there is no benefit, but it can cause issues if you do need the apps, as you can see...

I believe I uninstalled the dialer and its service in an attempt to replace them with the stock lollipop ones. How do you install TWRP on this phone? My mom has the same phone and its also rooted but hers actually works so I was thinking since TWRP has a nandroid backup setting, I could simply do a nandroid backup on hers and flash it on to mine to see if it will boot up. What do you think? And for the optimizing apps thing, it would finish optimizing, say starting apps, reboot and then optimize again and repeat. Thanks for the help btw, I really hope we can fix this.
You have to unlock the bootloader @ htcdev.com and use fastboot to install TWRP. And yes, that would work, as long as they are on the same software update. Know that when you unlock the bootloader, it will automatically wipe the phone, so make sure she has everything backed up to Google, the PC, etc.

Do you have the TWRP recovery file for me to download?
I'm afraid I'm a bit confused... How did you install Xposed and the Uninstaller without a custom recovery? Upon further searching, there doesn't appear to be a version of TWRP for your phone that I could find. Just figured you already had one. You must be on Kit Kat and not Lollipop?

I installed Cyanogen recovery before flashing Xposed and the uninstaller. I thought you had the TWRP recovery img for my phone which is why I asked. I believe some developers are working on a Clockworkmod recovery for this phone which is basically the same thing as TWRP recovery, right? Anyways I guess I just have to wait until that comes out, but I was wondering if anyone who somehow got a hold of the stock rom could upload it for us to use. It would be really helpful
ClockWorkMod is the recovery that Cyanogen uses. That is able to perform nandroid backups as well.
You have to unlock the bootloader, then if you messed up your stock rom and you've updated it to something newer than what Samsung gives for a stock recoverable rom, you must first use the tmobile vers, let it fail, and then use metropcs vers.
If you messed up recovery or anything it will all go back to stock after flash.
Next just copy superuser zip file to phone, go to download mode and adb flash cyanogen recovery img. Then reboot to recovery, choose to flash update, and find the superuser. zip and flash it, voila.

Does anybody have a stock KitKat ROM for this device? I'd like to try to bypass the FRP, but am stuck on what must be either a marshmallow or lollipop ROM.
What carrier do you have?
I can send you a backup of the FRP.img for Marshmallow or for lollipop.
You can dd if= flash it to your device and you should be all good.
I am looking for any older roms for these devices too.
Seems like not too many people save the RUU and then HTC only releases the newest.

I ended up fixing it using some ADB commands as noted in the "Well, I may have found..." thread. It'll be nice to have this phone out of my life. The day I had to spend with it was two days too many.
I know there has been many threads giving explicit instructions on how to unlock bootloader, gain s-off, and install TWRP recovery. But I am having problems/questions that no one (at least of what I've read) has encountered. I will try and make this clear for y'all but bear with me. Before I start just let it be known that I DO HAVE my bootloader unlocked. I ended up going to a cell phone repair place and paying a small fee to get my bootloader unlocked.
1. Do I need to gain s-off to be able to root and install TWRP recovery?
I say this because the I have tried the has00n application to unlock bootloader, gain s-off, root, and install TWRP recovery, but I ran into problems with my computer recognizing my device. I had all the necessary files downloaded (at least to my knowledge) but it honestly just wouldn't recognize my device.
2. If I do not need to gain s-off to install TWRP recovery and install a custom ROM (I'm going to be installing Cyanogenmod), how do I go about doing that?
Honestly I'm so fed up with this that I just want to sell this phone and get another one, all I want to do is get Cyanogenmod on this phone but it's so immensely difficult.
Please help me! I have been trying to get this accomplished for so long but I feel like because this phone is older all the info about how to root and gain s-off is outdated.....

You shouldn't need s-off for installing a custom rom. That's for tinkering with model id and scary stuff like that. I'm not sure what that tool is but I only know of one way to get s-off, and that's sunshine s-off.
As for rooting, when you install a custom rom via twrp or cwm, it will typically ask you if you'd like to root your phone AFTER installing the rom, but BEFORE you restart the first time. So the process should be:
Unlock
Install twrp or cwm
Wipe and factory reset
Install rom
Once completed, phone will prompt if you want to restart
Select YES to root on restart
And then wait for the phone to reboot! (it'll take a little while first time)
After the boot, it'll probably ask you to install superSU, which is the root manager app. If it doesn't, find it in the play store and you're set.

Thank you for your reply. So as of right now I am using the fastboot adb to control my phone from the command prompt on the computer, but there is a problem. When I try and flash the custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM) it says that the files are unrecognizable, so they're pretty much corrupted. I honestly don't know that to do. I know I can achieve root if I just get either one of these recoveries to flash but it seems that all the files for the htc one m8 TWRP and CWM are corrupted. What are you suggestions at this point? The fastboot iadb is working perfect I just need a non-corrupted recovery file and I'm searching around the internet withno luck of finding one. Is there one that you can attest to working? If so that would be amazing. Again, thanks for your help, hopefully we can get this sorted out!

Sometimes older versions don't install, I would try to see what version of twrp htc one m8 users are using, I'm not by my computer right now so I'm not sure. I also know that twrp works better on htc one for some reason, I've never found a version of cwm that works on my htc one. Make sure you are using the proper install command to install it too, I think it's fastboot flash recovery FILENAME.IMG
If all else fails, all I can think of at this point is that you got a bad download or something ?

The fastboot command i am using is the same as the one you stated. There's just a problem with the files. I'm beyond frustrated but really thank you for your help. Can you copy and paste your command window to this thread? It would help to see the exact error outputting. You can highlight and right click to copy anything from command window.

Is the phone currently on Lollipop, or otherwise? You can't know what version TWRP is correct, without this info. Current TWRP (2.8.7.0) won't work if the phone is on older OS version. Vice versa, if the phone is currently on Lollipop, older versions of TWRP (I believe older than 2.8) won't work. You have to flash the specific TWRP version that matches your OS version. Guessing which TWRP version to flash is not the right way to go about this.
Also, you need to tell us the actual TWRP version number you got, and where you downloaded it from. I've seen quite a few instances where folks thought they had the "most recent" version, but in fact they weren't even close. Its always best to be specific as possible, and provide all the details when getting help here.
Additionally, go into Settings (or do getvar all), and tell us the software number. If you got the Stagefright patch, it might be screwing up install of TWRP as well.

Again, just saying you used the "same" command isn't enough. A single wrong character, wrong file name, wrong path will cause the command to fail. As the previous response requested, please cut/paste, or better yet post a screenshot of your command prompt window, so we can see the exact command syntax, and the specific error message.
I can virtually guarantee that as long as you downloaded the file direct from the TWRP website, and tried downloading (and flashing) it more than once (to eliminate the possibility of corruption during file transfer); that the issue is almost certainly pilot error.
Somehow I'm a little frusrated. I've brought my phone since today. So it is currently on Lollipop. There is no Power in setting to uncheck Fastboot. Is there any way I can root my phone?

Press and hold the power button until is hard reboots, then hold vol down as well. You should go to boot loader before the HTC screen pops up.
Back Up!
Just a reminder, after you install TWRP, boot into recovery (TWRP) and create a backup file saved to your SD card first before trying to install a new ROM!
Always can restore if things go wrong or you don't like it.

hi still looking for help with my avoca android tablet. it doesnt boot up into android operating system just stuck on boot screen but can go into recovery mode with things like reboot now, update rkimage and so on.
i have tried to root it with an app called kingo root and says its rooted but i have tried to install a custom rom but nothing happens says aborted. is there anything i can do bare in mind i cannot access the tablet to turn usb debugging on and nothing else. if there is a thread here that will help and get things working again then id be really grateful or if someone can tell me what to do any help will be appreciated.
Well first off root will not allow you to flash a custom rom. You need an unlocked bootloader as well as a custom recovery. Your best bet would be find the stock image and flash that to get it running again and then take a week and do some reading and learn what your doing
I no what I'm doing I just can't find the things I need as the company no longer exist and I've searched hi and lo for a copy of their stock rom but nothing if I had that I no il be ok. But not sure how to unlock bootloader as I've used adb and fastboot but it don't work says waiting for device. Any pointers please

That is one of the biggest issues with cheap devices like this. You will most likely never find drivers or the stock rom for it. The best thing you might be able to pull off is porting a rom from a similar device.
Thanks yeah I think it's my only hope all I got to go by really is that this model of tablet uses jelly bean 4.2 as stock, so may see if can flash a stock rom from googles dev site as they have different model stock rims and just hope that one works. Il try nexus stock one first see if get lucky if not just work done the list. What do you recommend I do first shall I unlock bootloader first even though the command doesn't work in fastboot says device null or waiting when I type fastboot oem unlock. Or am I better starting off with a stock rom using adb? Also what recovery do you recommend I've used twrp and clockwork. Thanks
I'm trying to side load twrp using adb and all I get is opening update package, verifying update package, then installation failed do you no what I'm doing wrong
So i just decided to join the rest of the world and get myself a rectangle. so i researched the 1 to 200 dollar range for weeks until i found my new shiny metal friend with great specs and a price that wouldn't keep me up at night. the le max 2 x829. but i love tech and was really looking forward to pushing this phone and learn about all it could do! i was really excited.
Until i started to learn about the many confusing programs needed to install custom roms or make a recovery file. things like that All of which need like 6 different programs all of which seem to need some other program in order to functional. I can't seem to even find a starting point! I HAVE NEVER FELT THIS STUPID IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Someone please help. what programs do i need for a new os ? How does adb fit into the chain of programs needed to mod android? is twrp the first program needed? how does it all sort...fit to gather? Thanks for any help!

Long story short:
- Connect the phone to the PC and install the drivers (including ADB)
- Unlock bootloader (usually it's already unlocked)
- Download TWRP on your PC
- Install TWRP following the developer's steps
- Download your custom ROM
- Put the ROM on the internal memory
- Boot into TWRP
- Install the new ROM according to the instructions given by the developer and you're done...

including adb? what other drivers do i need? xposed? supersu? ...i have done my research by the way...its just not making alot of sense..thats all. i know all you old pros have probably been at it for years but i never even held a smartphone until 6 days ago ha ha

Also how do you download twrp on you're pc ? it won't let me i have it on my phone but it just keeps leading me to a website to download again.

Do you have it installed on the phone or just downloaded? If it's installed, jump over that step. If it's just downloaded, connect the phone to the pc by cable, transfer the files :cyclops:

1.1 If not, you'll need to google it, but I believe this toolkit will help you. In fact, this tool is capable of doing all the process for you by simply clicking on some buttons.2. Install ADB Drivers. There are a few options and it is basically
2.1 @greenManGaming recommends 15 seconds ADB installer.
2.2 (Alternative) Minimal ADB and Fastboot. I've used this one.
2.3 (Alternative) ADB and Fastboot (newer) or Universal ADB and Fastboot (older) from the same dev.
OBS: I'm not sure if the toolkit requires or not one of these options to work properly or if it already does this task.3. Download TWRP (on your computer).
3.1 Follow the instructions from the official page. In short, put the img into the ADB folder.4. Follow the commands in the the tutorial mentioned.
4.1 In short, unlock the bootloader, boot twrp, complete backup, reboot into the system, copy the backup to your PC/Cloud service, get back to fastboot mode, flash twrp, then flash your ROM.
OBS: Suggestion for only booting TWRP at the first time is perfectly optional, you can flash it since the beginning but in this case you wouldn't be able to backup the original recovery and everything as the phone came, in case you need go back to request an RMA.

more questions....twrp will only load onto my phone and not my pc? also there are no adb driver folders just an exe. what do i do about that?
someone tell me how to delete this thread...i am just going to sell my smartphone i can't look at it anymore. every thing i try to do with it it resists every single inch of the way. nothing works according to instructions. i thought this would be fun but its hell... i give up! ...it wins going to trade this thing for the first 30 dollar burner phone i can find
Huge drama for nothing. Sell the thing, it's obviously not for you. If you can't follow some simple instructions, then it's better to sell it to some guy who likes to try at least.

maybe they are laid out to be simple but nothing is working as instructed. i have been at it for a week . so far installing firefox is the best i can seem to do lol simple? theres nothing simple about the gangbang of programs you need to do stuff on these phones. none of which can actually be compelled to function under any circumstances at least for me.

If you are not familiar with giving commands with command prompt, installing drivers and needed software (android studio or minimal adb install) then you are in for a challenge, if you are not willing to learn its better to sell the phone or use it with de preinstalled android.
i find myself quite skilled( have flashed several brands of phoned in the last 5 years) and it took me a couple of days to figure out what to do and how to install twrp and my first rom, there are no one click shortcuts for this phone
Why need to install rom? It already work.

Did you try watching different videos to have a big picture of the process? It would be the first step. Even if you don't understand English, simply watch it. You'll see what would happen after each action.
Then check the written tutorial. Not a big issue at all. Really. Even for newbies, I've been one when I had a Galaxy 5, my first android that doesn't even needed to flash a custom ROM.
Whether you think you can, whether you think you can't, you're right.
The command to load the TWRP will be done on your PC, however, only your phone will load it. In short, you'll be commanding your phone through your PC.
When you install Minimal ADB and Fastboot, it will install its files in a default folder. Inside its default folder is where you should place the TWRP image.
