UPDATE: The latest update still is safe. I just installed it and I am still s-off.
UPDATE: The update to Jellybean does not write the secure flag and this method is safe to apply the OTA update with this method and still maintain root access afterwards.
First and foremost, a couple disclaimers.
FIRST, YOU MUST BE S-OFF FOR THIS TO WORK. PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY S-OFF.
SECOND, FOR THE OTA UPDATE 1.22.651.3 YOU WILL FOR SURE RETAIN S-OFF. ALTHOUGH HIGHLY UNLIKELY, HTC COULD POTENTIALLY MAKE YOU S-ON IN FUTURE OTA UPDATES. SEE HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Once you are s-off you can install the OTA update no problem and still retain root. I understand that there are rooted ROMs that come out within a day or whatever, I find this method just easier and less annoying that waiting for a rooted stock ROM to come out. I don't really theme, mod, or do crazy things with my phone but still want root access. So, I decided since I was s-off, I would give this method a whirl. I am happy to report that I am s-off, with TWRP, fully rooted, and with installing the OTA update. I had a little hiccup but was able to solve that.
So, here is the process. This is kind of a hodge podge of different threads, ideas, devices, and versions of android so if I didn't give you credit, please let me know and I will put you in this thread.
Process for installing a stock recovery. I have already created some stock recovery files so see at the bottom of this post for the zip file that includes the stock recovery. If you wish to use these files, just start with step #10.
IF YOU CHOOSE TO JUST DOWNLOAD THE STOCK RECOVERY AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST, SKIP TO STEP #10.
Creating Stock Recovery File Manually
1. Install a stock recovery if you don't already have one.
2. To do so, get the RUU for the version you are running.
3. Run the RUU (don't connect to your phone at all)
4. Navigate to your temp directory on your computer (on windows 7 it is C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Local\Temp)
5. Find a folder that looks like it is in the following format "{XXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX}" It might help to sort by date modified. The folder should have the current date
6. Inside the folder might be a couple other folders. Navigate through the folder to find a zip that says "firmware" or "rom" (mine said rom)
7. Extract the content to a folder in the same directory called rom
8. Navigate into the rom folder and find two files android-info.txt and recovery_signed.img. Copy those to a directory of your choice.
9. Send those files to a zip folder and name the file "PJ75IMG.zip" without the quotes. Make sure zip is only listed once. If you have file extensions hidden in windows yours will only say "PJ75IMG".
Installing the stock recovery, OTA, and regaining root
10. Place the stock recovery file on the root of your sd card
11. On your phone, head into settings and power and make sure the fastboot option is unchecked
12. Power down phone
13. Once phone is completely shut down, hold the volume down button and press the power on button while keeping the volume down button pressed.
14. It will boot into your hboot (verify it says s-off at the top or don't proceed) and find the file you placed on your sd card and ask you if you want to update. click volume up for yes. Reboot once finished. After your phone boots up, navigate to the root of your sdcard and delete PJ75IMG.zip
15. Go to settings>check for updates and check to see if there is an update. Download the update. Once it verifies, click install now. It should install just fine.
16. Once you are up and running, download one of the dirty racun hboots. I used hboot 2.09 img found here. Follow the instructions on the unlimited.io website how to flash the hboot by using fastboot (flashing the zip doesn't seem to be working.
update. click volume up for yes. Reboot once finished. After your phone boots up, navigate to the root of your sdcard and delete PJ75IMG.zip
17. Make sure usb debugging is checked under settings>developer options
18. Go download a su zip file. I used this one here and place it on the root of your sd card.
19. Go grab a custom recovery flashable zip (could not find the latest twrp zip) or img (I used TWRP found here. Take the image and place it in your platform tools folder for ADB.
20. Plug in phone while powered on and type in adb devices to make sure you are connected.
21. If you see a device type in

adb reboot bootloader
22. Your device will boot into your bootloader and you will see fastboot usb (make sure usb debugging was checked if you don't see that).
23. Then type fastboot flash recovery [filename] of the recovery img you downloaded. Once flashed, toggle with the volume up buttons to bootloader and then select recovery. This should boot you into TWRP
24. Once in recovery, install the su zip you downloaded in step 18.
25. Reboot and Enjoy!!!!
You are now rooted with the most current OTA update and all the goodies (radios, PRI, etc.)
This process should hopefully hold true for any future OTA updates if you are S-OFF. The only thing you will have to find is the current RUU to create the stock recovery. If this helped, feel free to thank! Go XDA!

I don't know. So you don't have to wait at all? Or for the people that aren't accustomed to flashing ROMs or don't care to. I prefer this method for whatever reason and it seems just easier. Personal preference though. The beauty of android and their strong developer network is that it gives the users choices. I can take the OTA update as soon as it comes out and don't have to worry about waiting for anything. Just another method I guess.
TLR there are already rooted stock roms in one of the dev forums. Flash it and flash the update firmware via bootloader and you're done.

The update firmware is the part that hangs me up. I believe when it was back in the original EVO days that some people were having problems updating their PRI version and it screwed up some things with wimax. That is when I decided I would just accept the OTA to get everything they included in the update and then gain root access through this method.

Even with Titanium, I don't have the time to reset everything back up the way I want it... including all the folders I've created, etc. If you could flash a ROM and maintain all your data intact, I might consider it. Perhaps there's something I'm unaware of.

im coming from the rezound, i just want the updated firmware! on my rez being s-off i could run ANY firmware ICS, or GB and then go back to whatever rom i was running. im wondering if im s-off, i should b able to do the same thing right.

The devs state that so that they don't have to spend their valuable time troubleshooting because you didn't flash right. Its always best to do a full wipe, but not always required when flashing an updated version of the same ROM.
1) Nandroid.
2)Wipe Dalvik cache & cache
3) Flash
You retain all data.
If you have issues, then you nand restore and do a full wipe before bugging the devs

Actually, TWRP has a PJ75IMG.zip on their site that can be flashed the same way as the HBOOT. And then, you can flash Superuser from TWRP.
I did everything from my SD card. And, in response to the person saying it would take the better part of the day... the whole thing took me barely 10 minutes, and I have a completely updated phone, all the firmware, radios, etc. And all my data and settings are intact. I think that for someone like me that likes everything stock, but rooted (for WiFi Tether and Adblock), this is the best way to go.

I know. This is exactly why I root and I can't believe there are so many people against this method. It seems very simple to me and I can have a stock recovery waiting to flash as soon as an OTA update comes out. Oh well.
Thanks for this info. I think I'm like you and not only like the stock experience and its benefits but also prefer diy when possible.
Of course I never seem to stay stock like you but I like doing the steps my self. To each their own is the beauty of android.

One advantage to me would be you're getting the official ROM/update, and you don't have to worry about a malicious dev slipping in some malware.

Why do you even have S-off then? That required you down download specific drivers, and run a program as an administrator on your computer. If you're concerned about a rogue dev they would've royally screwed you there.

That's fair, rooting and s-off could also inject malicious code. But so can ROM makers.
I think there's a difference between trying to be safe and being paranoid. If there is a way for someone to make money off of you/steal your identity, eventually they will try. I'm not suspicious of any of the current devs, but it's something we should maybe be more aware of. Look at all the warez Windows out there with malware built in to steal your information.

Totally agree. Its a good thing to learn in my opinion. I broke my Evo 4G, fixed it then rerooted it. Now on the 4G LTE got it rooted with custom rom. Love learning new things plus some of the good things that come with rooting and custom roms are worth it for me.
Hello, recently I have rooted my phone using the toolkit. The current recovery I have is TWRP. I wanted the root in the first place to be able to use xposed. However, it wont work, Whenever I try to install the update or new version it force reboots my phone. Also I found out I cannot update my software! I tried unrooting using the unroot option on SU but it was only temporarily. I want a permanent unroot and back to stock.
Android version : 4.4.2
Software number : 1.12.502.18
I downloaded my stock image from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376 and the toolkit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
I tried to flash it using the toolkit but it gave me an error when I tried to flash it. I don't recall correctly but it said something about a remote error right when it was sending the image over. Honestly I do not want to do it again to see what it said in fear of bricking my phone. So I will try to be as detailed as possible.
When I downloaded the image it said something about the name not being the original one. When I first tried flashing the stock ROM with the original name when I download it"stock recovery 1.12.502 recovery.img" it (the toolkit) gave me an immediate error of not being able to select it. So I renamed it to "recovery.img". I tried again and it actually was in the process of flashing. THen the error showed up as said above. Someone please help me. Thank you.
Update
So i just downloaded a different image. I flashed it successfully! I am currently rebooting from the original recovery! Currently I am on the htc one loading screen. It's been a couple minutes, hopefully I did not brick it...
NOPE! I successfully returned to stock! ANother issue...I still have root access! How can remove SU? I tried the unroot option in the app but I am still rooted after reboot...
UNROOTED. Sadly SU won't delete...but at least I'm unrooted and can update now.

I don't know if the app is that big of a deal to you, but if it is, your options are...
1. Try factory reset in settings (may or may not work)
2. Reflash TWRP and flash the SuperSU.zip again than do a full unroot in settings.
3. Reflash TWRP and flash stock Sense ROM
Also, I made a guide in general which will help you fully return to stock. To begin the guide, you will need to be unlocked, rooted, and S-Off. That guide will help you hide the tampered and relocked banner.
If you don't care about the banners and the SuperSU app, it's probably not worth the effort and time.

So you had an issue with Xposed, and you solution was to unroot? Wouldn't it have made more sense to troubleshoot the xposed problem? If you bothered to unlock the bootloader and root in the first place, IMO unrooting is a step backwards.
I'm also not a big fan of applying OTAs to a modded device. Yes, you cannot install official OTA updates on a modded phone. In particular, if stock recovery is not present, as its required for the OTA to install. If you want the latest software, just wait until the rooted version is posted in the Development section. Custom ROMs based on the 1.58 update started to be posted one day after the OTA started rolling out; and the stock rooted version was posted only 2 days after OTA release. For some people, getting it from here may even be faster than waiting for the OTA! That's pretty much how it goes. As long as there is developer interest in the device, you can rely on the latest software being available very quickly in the Development section.
The stock AT&T software is garbage anyway. I can't stand the amount of bloat, gimped features (WiFi hotspot) and other AT&T meddling. I don't understand why anyone would prefer this over other options. Software updates are always going to go to the international version first, anyway (AT&T is notorious for delaying updates for "testing"). What are you really getting with the 1.58 update? Extreme Power Savings mode, and a few other fixes? International M8 has had EPS mode for some time now.

Why do you need to use the toolkit at all, to flash recovery? Flashing recovery is a single fastboot command. Easy.
The toolkit adds unnecessary complication; and I've seen them cause errors when doing it "manually" works just fine. The toolkit might not be the problem in your case, but we would never know unless you try to do it manually.
If you really want to flash stock recovery (not my personal recommendation), I would start by wiping cache and flashing recovery with fastboot. I've seen maybe dozens of cases where issues with flashing a recovery was solved simply by wiping cache:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
I am having the same issue as above using the same build file from the link given in the other thread. However, whenever I am in Bootloader, the computer or terminal does not recognize my device.

Anytime I try to use the toolkit or manually through the command line, it gives me "unc paths are not supported" or "device not found". It is the same for both Bootloader and Recovery. My original problem was the person I bought it from had root on it so I decided to wipe the OS without backing up and now cannot get the Stock Recovery ROM or any other Custom ROM to install on the phone. I have also tried the SD card method and that brought up an error as well resulting in "failed."
Any help would be appreciated as the phone as it sits right now does not have any OS on it so it is stuck on the HTC Boot up screen.

I've got TWRP installed but it keeps telling me it needs to install superuser before it can root.

Its and International OX+, I've got the right kernel... what do I need to do?

If you wiped as you said, you need to push with adb a rom of your choice to the internal memory of the phone and then install it within twrp.
Please read instructions 2 or 3 times before attempting anything, seems like you rushed and now you're temporarily without phone till you flash a rom on it again. I doubt any root guide tells you to wipe the phone, your own fault on this.
To sum it up:
Put a rom's zip of your choice in the internal memory with adb push
flash the rom within the twrp recovery (install option)
flash the kernel for the specific rom with fastboot (each rom has a guide and download for it)
You can now search about it more easily, plenty of posts and info about this.

So yep, I've got the ROM I want but don't understand the kernel, I see no guide to download it, all I know is I took a note of the Kernel before I wiped my phone and I have managed to find the exact kernel.
The ROM or RUU as it is, is an O2 UK version, I figure it must be the one I want as it was an O2 phone in the UK.
I still don't know what folders to put things in, TWRP can't see a boot.img that I have on the phone when installing, it can only see it through file explorer.
And then, every time I power down the phone TWRP asks to install Superuser, its cant, theres nothing to install it to, so it just keeps asking.
This is all because I hated the Sense 5 update, indeed Im till looking for the Sense 4 ROM fo HOX+

Sigh, if you had read carefully you'd know that boot.img need to be flashed through fastboot and not from recovery. Every rom has this info or a batch file for this.
So what exactly are you trying to do? Root the stock rom that came originally with the phone or installing a custom rom?

I see, the easiest ways would be to use a custom rom now. For example, the one you already got the kernel from(android revolution hd)
To root you dont need to install a kernel... just to flash the supersu zip. Using a custom rom's kernel with stock rom might not be a good idea.
Another simple way would be to restore stock rom back to start and try rooting again, this time reading everything carefully
So the two easiest ways i think:
1) flash a custom rom following the instructions they provide in the initial posts for that rom
2) run the o2 correspondent RUU to restore stock rom (you'd need to relock the bootloader), also reading carefully posts in the forum about restoring to stock
Without getting into too much detail, these are the simplest options.

So have managed to install superuser and root my phone, all instructions for doing this were wrong including Hassoon, had to have the phone in System screen to do it, not bootloader or recovery.

Well, the instructions are dire but after 10 days of persistance have installed Android Revolution HD 8, finally my phone is up and running better than the bloated os that came with the phone so, you can call this thread resolved.
Hey guys! Unfortunately I bricked my new HTC Desire 626s while fiddling around with xposed for lollipop after successfully rooting the phone and installing cyanogen recovery. I think if I flash the stock rom on the phone through either adb or cyanogen recovery I can unbrick it, but I have been unsuccessful in finding this file on the internet. Would anyone care to give me a link or upload the stock firmware/rom of this phone? It would really help me out, thank you!
You have to make sure the firmware is the same version or newer than the one currently on the phone as well as which carrier or region the phone is from. Without that, can't provide the correct file to download.

Was just thinking about this...if you soft bricked after attempting to install Xposed, and nothing else, you should be able to get out of it by flashing the xposed uninstaller zip. If that does not work, stay tuned to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-626/help/htc-desire-626s-root-recovery-t3169169 as there are some others at the end of the thread in a similar predicament. It does not appear that there is an official RUU yet for the Metro version, only the T-Mobile version, and they are not compatible. Just try the uninstaller zip first because that would be the easiest thing to try and should only take a couple of minutes.

I tried this before my phone got ****ed and it worked:good:! If you can help me dude that'd be great. After uninstalling or changing some stuff in priv-app on my HTC Desire 626s, when I rebooted, it would just stay in a boot loop with the optimizing app message. Any ideas?
What did you uninstall? I would ask for those apps in that thread and use a flashable zip and install via TWRP. You might also try clearing caches and/or resetting the phone again. It DOES take a long time to optimize the apps after wiping stuff as well, so sometimes it is a matter of being patient.
This is why I ALWAYS recommend to freeze apps vs uninstalling. Uninstalling them does not get you any usable space back, so there is no benefit, but it can cause issues if you do need the apps, as you can see...

I believe I uninstalled the dialer and its service in an attempt to replace them with the stock lollipop ones. How do you install TWRP on this phone? My mom has the same phone and its also rooted but hers actually works so I was thinking since TWRP has a nandroid backup setting, I could simply do a nandroid backup on hers and flash it on to mine to see if it will boot up. What do you think? And for the optimizing apps thing, it would finish optimizing, say starting apps, reboot and then optimize again and repeat. Thanks for the help btw, I really hope we can fix this.
You have to unlock the bootloader @ htcdev.com and use fastboot to install TWRP. And yes, that would work, as long as they are on the same software update. Know that when you unlock the bootloader, it will automatically wipe the phone, so make sure she has everything backed up to Google, the PC, etc.

Do you have the TWRP recovery file for me to download?
I'm afraid I'm a bit confused... How did you install Xposed and the Uninstaller without a custom recovery? Upon further searching, there doesn't appear to be a version of TWRP for your phone that I could find. Just figured you already had one. You must be on Kit Kat and not Lollipop?

I installed Cyanogen recovery before flashing Xposed and the uninstaller. I thought you had the TWRP recovery img for my phone which is why I asked. I believe some developers are working on a Clockworkmod recovery for this phone which is basically the same thing as TWRP recovery, right? Anyways I guess I just have to wait until that comes out, but I was wondering if anyone who somehow got a hold of the stock rom could upload it for us to use. It would be really helpful
ClockWorkMod is the recovery that Cyanogen uses. That is able to perform nandroid backups as well.
You have to unlock the bootloader, then if you messed up your stock rom and you've updated it to something newer than what Samsung gives for a stock recoverable rom, you must first use the tmobile vers, let it fail, and then use metropcs vers.
If you messed up recovery or anything it will all go back to stock after flash.
Next just copy superuser zip file to phone, go to download mode and adb flash cyanogen recovery img. Then reboot to recovery, choose to flash update, and find the superuser. zip and flash it, voila.

Kitkat, anyone?
Does anybody have a stock KitKat ROM for this device? I'd like to try to bypass the FRP, but am stuck on what must be either a marshmallow or lollipop ROM.
What carrier do you have?
I can send you a backup of the FRP.img for Marshmallow or for lollipop.
You can dd if= flash it to your device and you should be all good.
I am looking for any older roms for these devices too.
Seems like not too many people save the RUU and then HTC only releases the newest.
I got lollipop and marshmallow that's it.
But like i said we can fix the frp partition.

I ended up fixing it using some ADB commands as noted in the "Well, I may have found..." thread. It'll be nice to have this phone out of my life. The day I had to spend with it was two days too many.
I know there has been many threads giving explicit instructions on how to unlock bootloader, gain s-off, and install TWRP recovery. But I am having problems/questions that no one (at least of what I've read) has encountered. I will try and make this clear for y'all but bear with me. Before I start just let it be known that I DO HAVE my bootloader unlocked. I ended up going to a cell phone repair place and paying a small fee to get my bootloader unlocked.
1. Do I need to gain s-off to be able to root and install TWRP recovery?
I say this because the I have tried the has00n application to unlock bootloader, gain s-off, root, and install TWRP recovery, but I ran into problems with my computer recognizing my device. I had all the necessary files downloaded (at least to my knowledge) but it honestly just wouldn't recognize my device.
2. If I do not need to gain s-off to install TWRP recovery and install a custom ROM (I'm going to be installing Cyanogenmod), how do I go about doing that?
Honestly I'm so fed up with this that I just want to sell this phone and get another one, all I want to do is get Cyanogenmod on this phone but it's so immensely difficult.
Please help me! I have been trying to get this accomplished for so long but I feel like because this phone is older all the info about how to root and gain s-off is outdated.....

You shouldn't need s-off for installing a custom rom. That's for tinkering with model id and scary stuff like that. I'm not sure what that tool is but I only know of one way to get s-off, and that's sunshine s-off.
As for rooting, when you install a custom rom via twrp or cwm, it will typically ask you if you'd like to root your phone AFTER installing the rom, but BEFORE you restart the first time. So the process should be:
Unlock
Install twrp or cwm
Wipe and factory reset
Install rom
Once completed, phone will prompt if you want to restart
Select YES to root on restart
And then wait for the phone to reboot! (it'll take a little while first time)
After the boot, it'll probably ask you to install superSU, which is the root manager app. If it doesn't, find it in the play store and you're set.

Thank you for your reply. So as of right now I am using the fastboot adb to control my phone from the command prompt on the computer, but there is a problem. When I try and flash the custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM) it says that the files are unrecognizable, so they're pretty much corrupted. I honestly don't know that to do. I know I can achieve root if I just get either one of these recoveries to flash but it seems that all the files for the htc one m8 TWRP and CWM are corrupted. What are you suggestions at this point? The fastboot iadb is working perfect I just need a non-corrupted recovery file and I'm searching around the internet withno luck of finding one. Is there one that you can attest to working? If so that would be amazing. Again, thanks for your help, hopefully we can get this sorted out!

Sometimes older versions don't install, I would try to see what version of twrp htc one m8 users are using, I'm not by my computer right now so I'm not sure. I also know that twrp works better on htc one for some reason, I've never found a version of cwm that works on my htc one. Make sure you are using the proper install command to install it too, I think it's fastboot flash recovery FILENAME.IMG
If all else fails, all I can think of at this point is that you got a bad download or something ?

Yeah I've been trying to use the most current version of twrp and it didn't work. I ended up trying past versions and those didn't work either. The fastboot command i am using is the same as the one you stated. There's just a problem with the files. I'm beyond frustrated but really thank you for your help. When you're by your computer can you please send me the twrp version you have, it would be much appreciated.

Can you copy and paste your command window to this thread? It would help to see the exact error outputting. You can highlight and right click to copy anything from command window.

Is the phone currently on Lollipop, or otherwise? You can't know what version TWRP is correct, without this info. Current TWRP (2.8.7.0) won't work if the phone is on older OS version. Vice versa, if the phone is currently on Lollipop, older versions of TWRP (I believe older than 2.8) won't work. You have to flash the specific TWRP version that matches your OS version. Guessing which TWRP version to flash is not the right way to go about this.
Also, you need to tell us the actual TWRP version number you got, and where you downloaded it from. I've seen quite a few instances where folks thought they had the "most recent" version, but in fact they weren't even close. Its always best to be specific as possible, and provide all the details when getting help here.
Additionally, go into Settings (or do getvar all), and tell us the software number. If you got the Stagefright patch, it might be screwing up install of TWRP as well.

Again, just saying you used the "same" command isn't enough. A single wrong character, wrong file name, wrong path will cause the command to fail. As the previous response requested, please cut/paste, or better yet post a screenshot of your command prompt window, so we can see the exact command syntax, and the specific error message.
I can virtually guarantee that as long as you downloaded the file direct from the TWRP website, and tried downloading (and flashing) it more than once (to eliminate the possibility of corruption during file transfer); that the issue is almost certainly pilot error.
Somehow I'm a little frusrated. I've brought my phone since today. So it is currently on Lollipop. There is no Power in setting to uncheck Fastboot. Is there any way I can root my phone?

Press and hold the power button until is hard reboots, then hold vol down as well. You should go to boot loader before the HTC screen pops up.
Back Up!
Just a reminder, after you install TWRP, boot into recovery (TWRP) and create a backup file saved to your SD card first before trying to install a new ROM!
Always can restore if things go wrong or you don't like it.
