Internet not working in Android [solved] - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus ROM Development

Hi,
I have been playing around with Android on my Niki300 (20 key, XDA Star, official O2 Germany ROM) for a while now, but I was not able to connect to the internet.
At the moment I am using the Ion-Android build found here: http://vogue-android.googlecode.com/files/Google-Ion-2009-09-12.zip
My default.txt looks like this:
set RAMSIZE 0x07000000
set RAMADDR 0x10000000
set FBDURINGBOOT 0
set MTYPE 1724
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set cmdline "board-htckaiser.panel_type=2 ppp.apn=internet ppp.username= ppp.password= board-kaiser-battery.battery_capacity=1800 mddi.width=320 mddi.height=480 lcd.density=160 msm_sdcc.msmsdcc_fmax=20000000 pm.sleep_mode=1 no_console_suspend board-kaiser-keypad.atttilt=1"
boot
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
I have also set up the same APN in Android. Modem App claims that it connected, but it didnt't. No connection symbol or working connection
I have already tried different Radios: 1.58.16.27 (originaly supplied with my phone), 1.58.21.23S Modded, 1.64.08.21K and 1.71.09.01K. It did not make a diference, so now I am back to the modded 1.58.
I hope someone can help me with this...
Greetings, mblaster

Internet
Turn your internet on in wm before you go to android

Thanks, unfortunately it didn't work for me either... Everything else seems to be fine, phone, sms and various apps work. Only internet is missing.
Another few things I have noticed: During the last bootup of android I got a force close error of com.htc.privider.. doesn't sound promising. Modem App seems to crash, when I use it after I made a call. Without a call it says "done" on startup and something like "already connected" after i press connect. After the call there was no status on startup and a hangup on pressing connect.
Any further suggestions? Or is there perhaps a better android port out there. I tried the Hero port from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544965 but it hangs in a loop during bootup on my phone.
Thank you for helping,
mblaster

Hmm, I also use the Hero port from NemanjaLo it it worked for me, only sending sms give's me a problem.
Maybe you can find more info in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550541 or ask there a question.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the link, but I already have tried to follow those instructions without success. I managed to get the Hero image working by now. I works like a charm for me with the Ion basefiles, again except internet access. I am not sure if the problem lies in wrong apn settings or somewhere else. Perhaps I can test with another sim card in the afternoon.
Does anyone know where I can find the relevant log files for the modem/internet? I tried "logcat > log.txt" on the phone, but I did not find anything that seemed to be relevant to my problem.
mlaster
€: "logcat -b radio" seems more interesting...
€€: The Modem seems to be initialized with a strange IP as a parameter:
"AT< +CGDCONT: 1,"IP","internet","38.103.41.10",0,0"
The ip has nothing to do with my service provider (o2 germany), and also is not the dynamic ip that i had in wm. It is also not somewhere in my apn settings (neither in android nor in defaults.txt). Any ideas where this comes from and if it may be the cause for my problem?

OK, I found a workaround for that problem. I am still not sure what the cause is, but i suspect that the dialin number for a gsm phone is not dialed properly. Another thing might be that pppd is not started properly. If I have some spare time I will investigate that further.
My solution is a script that looks like this (where it says "surfo2" there should be your carrier's apn):
#/bin/sh
/bin/killall pppd
/bin/echo -e "AT+CGDCONT=1,\"IP\",\"surfo2\",\"\",0,0\r" > /dev/smd0
/bin/sleep 2
/bin/echo -e 'ATD*99***1#\r' > /dev/smd0
/bin/sleep 4
/bin/echo "startppp" > /smodem/control
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
I called it "net.sh" and placed it in the root of my sd card. After android has booted I run it with the terminal from the devtools (#su / #cd sdcard / #sh net.sh).
The script dials the dial in number *9***# and starts the ppp deamon. After running the script (sometimes twice, don't know why) the internet works normally. Connecting and disconnecting via modem app works too. I tested this in both android configurations described in one of my older posts in this thread.
Basically the dialup should be done on boot via ppp-on-dialer from the initrd. Dont know what goes wrong there...
I hope this information is useful to someone, perhaps the developers (btw: thanks for this great android port).

Make NEW SoftBank AP setting on ANY Hermes ROM W/O cooking!

After I posted ROM-cooking method to create new SoftBank flat-rate data connection, another Japanese X01HT user has found more easier way today.
I would like to introduce new method with respect for his great work...
Now you DON'T need ROM cooking!
Step 1. Unzip the attached file, and run either ConnSBM.CAB or ConnSBM_noproxy.CAB for your purpose.
ConnSBM.CAB: make a connection, overwrite WirelessMgr_Service.dll and enable hidden proxy (webopen.softbank.ne.jp:8080), it is fully compatible as X01HT's standard connection.
ConnSBM_noproxy.CAB: just make a connection (no WirelessMgr_Service.dll and hidden proxy installation).
The connection will be created, however password entry is still empty at this moment.
Step 2. Run ORE2cert.cab (self-signature certificate for WIFIwake.exe).
Step 3. Copy Out.xml and WIFIwake.exe into \Windows folder.
Step 4. Just RUN WIFIwake.exe from \Windows.
The password will be created into the connection made by ConnSBM.CAB.
To confirm whether success or not, check the connection "Internet > SoftBank", and click "Edit -> Next -> Next". If "****************" is shown at the Password field, the password has been successfully created.
Enjoy!
EDIT: Updated WIFIwake.exe as self-signed version. I've prepared Hermes and Universal version separately (the difference is internal string for each model name). For Universal, at least I could have successfully made the connection on the DarkForce WM6 for Universal.
Download ConnSBM_ORE2h.zip (for Hermes X01HT) or ConnSBM_ORE2u.zip (for Universal JASJAR) and try it again if the password is still blank.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: It seems to depend on CID...
To make this operation correct on non-SuperCID device, it requires to edit internal device name and CID. The attached file for Hermes seems workable for X01HT(Model: HERM200/CID: VODAK801) or SuperCIDed HERM200 device only, and for Universal, also only for JASJAR (PU10/CDL__001) or SuperCIDed device.
If you cannot create PW, you need to edit CID (01C798h-01C7A7h) using Unicode or UTF-16 mode of binary editor (for non-HERM200 or PU10 device, Model [01C760h-01C76Fh] also), and sign yourself... However, if you burn them into your cooked ROM, it may works correctly without edit binary (I've successed on my JASJAR, using original WIFIwake.exe from X01HT).
You can determine your CID using info 2 command of mtty.exe.
Too bad I alreday cooked mine...
great!!
it's perfect work on my x01ht with wm6lvsw edition!!
thank you
WOW! Amazing! Beautiful!
Thank you so much! I love it!
Will you understand the password?
Because it is necessary when using it from the personal computer as a
modem.
Doesn't work with Treo 750v
It seems this CAB utilize WiFi manager or something?
When I extracted the files from ZIP and executed the CAB, copy the Out.xml and WIFIwake.exe to \Windows folder and executed WIFIwake.exe, nothing happens. The connection Internet was created but the password is still blank.
Password Not Made in My hTc Universal
Hi Itamae!
Very Very Good Job!!
But Dont Create Password in my Universal.Of course installing According to the procedure.
Please Help.
My Universal is 02 Xda Exec
ROM:2.10.04JPN
Radio:1.08
Nice, I was messing around and the wifiwake will not put the password without the out.xml file but I was able to edit the text in the out.xml (which was about 300 letter As) and add some more random letters in there and it created it. Anyone think they can decompile the exe and look for the actual password?
Succeeded New SoftBank AP!!
VeryVery Thanks Itamae!!
Exec ROM Changed SuperCID,I Succeess Created New AP.
Not only Hermes JPN cross bow has came!
But also Soft bank connection in defualt!
go! go go!

Is this guide for fresh devices only, or can I use it on the phone with all my current programs and files intact? I mean, do I need to hard reset the phone to get this to work, or will it work regardless of whether I hard reset or not?

not working with dark force 2.0
It is bad news!
I just think to upgrade to Black v2.0.
Any reason for this?
Waiting for your work-around!
I am using MicorX WM6 which includes this batch in the rom.
It surely works well after April.

Custel has made this pretty easy. He has two cabs located in the windows directory, one that disables the proxy, and one that restores it. You need to run the one that disables it.
In case you cannot find these actual files, go back to Custel's thread, and check, I believe, the 2nd post. He offers a cab to install links for each of them in the programs directory.
Hope this helps. I run his ROM and have no problem at all with my wifi.
Good luck,

Hi, Could you post link ?

My HTC has no data connection. [I Need a USCC MSL?]

I finally got my HTC programmed and working. Everything with it is great, except now it cannot connect to the internet.
I get two kinds of error messages- initially it kept telling me that my username or password was wrong..... I couldnt find a place to enter either of those [not that i knew what they should be anyway], and I've never had this problem on my other HTC's. Now its telling me that it cannot connect for an unknown reason and that i should change the settings if needed or reset the device according to manufacturer's documentation....
What should I do?
I upgraded to wm6.1 last night, and im running USCC as my carrier.
It was suggested to me that i enter ##778 mode and change some settings there, but i do not know the MSL for my area.
Any idea where to find that?
Thanks.
Not sure if these will work but found them when I was looking for my MSL.
Use this method. I don't know who found it, but credit goes to them.
Change the following registry entries in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\ATDbgLog
Enable: 1
LogMode: 1
* Wait a about 10 minutes (more time will not hurt), and soft-reset.
* Check to see that the file \Atlog\ATDbg0.txt has been created.
* Return the values back to what they were (most likely 0) waiting the same amount of time as above.
* Look in the ATDbg0.txt file and you should see a log of commands sent to the CDMA radio and there should be something like this somewhere in the file:
~~~~~~~~~~~SNIP~~~~~~~~~~~~
00:00:00 Tx:AT+HTC_RMSL=0\r
00:00:00 Rx:+HTC_RMSL: (###THIS WILL BE THE MSL###)\r\n0\r
00:00:00 Tx:AT+HTC_ROTKSL=0\r
00:00:00 Rx:+HTC_ROTKSL: 123456\r\n0\r
~~~~~~~~~~~SNIP~~~~~~~~~~~~
The numbers next to the Rx: +HTC_RMSL line should be your MSL
OR
Do a search for BAFMSL. It's a universal SPC code finder tool.
It requires .net 3.5, and tends to fail randomly, but so far has worked on 8 of 10 phones I have tried it on.

On my Titan all I did after upgrading the rom was create a new connection, called it broadband, entered #777 as the number, and my phone number followed by @vzw3g (password blank, check save password) and it worked fine.

there are a few settings in you need to make sure are corect in the m ip settings of the phone after u press ##778. I am using uscc and had the same issue. so I know this to be a factor after updating roms. Below are the correct settings for your m ip
Number of Profiles : 6
Active User Profile Index : 0
MIP_MODE : Mobile IP Prefered
MIP Registration Retries : 1
MIP Registration Retry Timeout : 2000 ms
MIP Pre-Registration Timeout : 3
Mobile Node-HA Authentication : Enable
Send a Registration Request Only in Use : Enable
Dormant Hanfoff Optimization: Enable
I cant stress enough... these need to be exact with uscc... dont forget to run the uscc carier cab.
If you want to have EVDO when it comes to your areas as well, under Security Settings, make sure the HDR username is your [email protected], and the ESN is in hex and all capital letters. The HDR Password is your ESN the same as above but no @uscc.net on the end.
Below this screen is also the ppp username and password, they should be your phone#@uscc.net and your phone # as the password.
These 2 settings are also necessary for data to work correctly.

Tethering the Streak to another phone...

Has anyone, (thinking others who've been shutdown by AT&T), tried tethering their Streak to a phone using PdaNet, or something similar?
A friend tried with his Streak and BB (using PdaNet), but didn't have much success.
Thanks,
AG

i use barnacle to connect with ipad.root necessary.
i have a US streak and im having issues getting it to tether to my HTC Aria (using wireless tether). Ive tried the original rom, the O2 1.6 and 2.1 rom. But still no luck, my laptop, and 2 friends ipods will connect through the aria, but the streak doesnt even see it.. So not sure whats going on!
I have a Sprint EVO 4G that can serve as a hot spot but haven't tried it with my Streak yet. But I plan to. I bought the Streak without activating the AT&T part. Don't need two cell phones.
Thanks all.. I know the Archos 5 (which I believe also runs 1.6) advertises the cell phone tethering capability. Anyone know what software it uses? I don't know much about that specific sofwtare, but will start researching...
Yeah Barnacle works.

the archos 5 will not tether if u are using adhoc. found out the hard way... (long time ago before the streak came out i thought i could use that and tether with my iphone and it didint work.. apparantally it doensnt support adhoc wifi. but bluetooth tethering worked fine on the archos 5
Maybe someone can get this to work?
Tried to connect to to my WM Omnia via WMWiFiRouter- No Dice.
tried using wpa_supplicant file attched below- i can see and connect to ad hoc network(s), but can not establish IP --> copied to /system/bin
the apk and files below look more promising but perhaps need editing by someone who actually knows what they are doing. the app installs and runs but there is a location mismatch.
then ran across this info here: http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-android-tablet-discussion/4505-i-have-infrastructure-adhoc-working-same-time-do-you-want-look-here.html

Hi Guys,
Finally figured this out.
Since the wpa_supplicant.conf file is read-only, an Android app can't modify the file. Hence, we were having to go back to connecting the APAD to the PC and use DroidExplorer to overwrite the wpa_supplicant file everytime we wanted to enable Adhoc Wifi.
I realized that when you upload a file to the APAD using DroidExplorer, it gets write permissions
And once you have the file with write permissions, an app CAN modify the file.
So, I've created a small app for easy switching between Normal and Ad-hoc wifi modes.
Here are the steps:
1. Step removed because the files were replaced (see below!)
2. Use DroidEXplorer to copy the 3 files: wpa_supplicant.conf, wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc and wpa_supplicant.conf.normal to /data/misc/wifi folder
3. Install AdhocAble.apk using any File Manager or even DroidExplorer
Now, start up adhoc wifi tethering on your phone (Barnacle Wifi Legacy on Android, JoikuSpot on Symbian, WMWifirouter on Windows Mobile, MyWi on IPhone etc.) and set the adhoc SSID to: adhocable with NO password.
Remember that you have to Turn wifi off and on everytime you switch modes.
For experts: How the app buttons work:
1. Switch to Ad-hoc Wifi Mode: Overwrite wpa_supplicant.conf with wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc
So if you want to change the adhoc SSID or give it a password, edit the wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc before copying it via Droidexplorer
2. Switch to Normal Wifi Mode: Overwrite wpa_supplicant.conf with wpa_supplicant.conf.normal
3. Backup Normal Settings: Overwrite wpa_supplicant.conf.normal with wpa_supplicant.conf
This allows you to avoid having to type the normal wifi passwords every time. But, remember not to use this button when you are in ad-hoc mode, otherwise you'll lose all your saved wifi passwords.
4. Do let us know: opens up an email compose window so that you can tell me whether you like the app or not. Do write your name, country and details of which devices and ROMs you have.
My modifications to these instructions are as follows:
Instead of the supplicant files supplied by the user above use mine
Also feel free to open "wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc" and change the SSID to whatever you want, i.e. I called mine "AndroidTether"
Also I didn't bother with any security because I'm just using the access control feature on my tethering program, I'm not sure if they all have this feature but basically, my phone tells me when someone is trying to connect and asks if I want to allow the connection before the device is assigned an IP.
1. download: "wpa_supplicant_files_WORKING.zip and unzip
1.1 Open "wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc" and edit SSID to whatever you want
2. place "wpa_supplicant.conf" , wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc & wpa_supplicant.conf.normal into the sdk's "tool" folder (where adb.exe is)
3. download "AdhocAble_apk.zip" and unzip
4. Place "AdhocAble.apk" into the sdk's "tool" folder (where adb.exe is)
5. Open the command prompt and get to the folder where your adb.exe iscd c:/where_your_sdk_is/tools
6. enter: " adb push wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi "
7. enter: " adb push wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc /data/misc/wifi "
8. enter: enter: " adb push wpa_supplicant.conf.normal /data/misc/wifi "
9. check to see the files are there by entering " adb shell ls /data/misc/wifi "
10. install the apk, you can use my batch file to do this if you'd like here
11. unzip the file manager batch script and place it in the sdk's "tools" folder (where adb.exe is)
12. open the batch file (it should open a new cmd window)
13. select 2
14. select 1 (install an app)
15. it'll ask for the name of the apk. Enter " AdhocAble.apk " exactly, its case sensitive.
16. reboot the PDN
17. Start your cell phone tether and set the SSID to whatever you set in the .conf.adhoc file at the begining
18. Open up the AdhocAble app and select "backup your normal settings", this should save all of the remembered infrastructure network's SSIDs and passphrases
18.1 select Enable Adhoc, it will prompt you to make sure to turn your wifi connection off and back on.
19. Do so.
20. You should see your cell phone's SSID in the connection list (remember the SSID is hardcoded into the .conf.adhoc file so you have to set it to the same thing in the tether program or vice-versa.
21. If you don't see the tether connection enter it manually
To get back to infrastructure - simply open the app and select enable normal mode and turn the wifi off then back on again - after a short bit you should see the networks as usual. It might take a bit longer to obtain an IP, but it should work...if not reboot the PDN and try it again.
Another success - Flytouch2 / Eclair
What an adventure... I tried lots of different approaches to getting my 10" Flytouch2 running Eclair to my Moto Cliq the instructions in this thread formed a good basis for success. I had to make a few changes which I will describe.
First, I am using a rooted Moto Cliq (1.5 I think) running Barnacle to serve up Ad Hoc Wi-Fi. It worked great with my PC and iPad but I really wanted my Flytouch2 to have network access through the Cliq.
So far I have not yet been able to get the Flytouch2 to connect to my PC using ADB; this is a problem for another day. As such I was side loading until I realized that I could place APK's in Dropbox (great free app) and net-load?? them. I also had to get creative with Root Explorer and other file managers / editors to make the required changes
To accomplish this I did the following on my Flytouch2 (less the stuff that didn't work including a couple of bricking episodes)
- Rooted (permanent) painlessly using Z4Root
- Installed Root Explorer (essential for copying and renaming R/O system files)
- Installed TED to edit files
- Install ASTRO File Manager which is helpful for non root file manipulation activities
- Used Root Explorer to mark the /data/misc/wifi directory as R/W so files could be added/modified (the default is RO)
- Installed AdhocAble.apk which is nice but it turns out not really needed in my case
- Disabled Wi-Fi until done
- Installed the wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc (after editing - attached and below)
- Renamed old wpa_supplicant.conf file as wpa_supplicant.conf.normal)
- Replaced wpa_supplicant.conf using wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc (basically leaving backups of each in the directory)
After doing this and enabling Wi-Fi I was able to see and connect to my Cliq running Barnacle. I am also able to connect to my standard Access Point as well without any configuration change. The only issue is that I am not running any security but I think this is not a difficult update to the .conf file. I may add a second network SSID entry with a PSK and use "Wireless Tether" on my Cliq to test. For now I am just happy to connect and Barnacle allows me to screen and block all connection requests. The primary deviation from the great instructions earlier in this thread that got me up and running was the content of the wpa_supplicant.conf file. I used part of my original file and part of the file .adhoc file from earlier in this thread.

Obviously my SSID is set to JJJ (I like J's). I got my inspiration from a file I found buried in my Android file system (attached as ...notes.txt). It is not very interesting reading but it provides lots of clues and it explains the meanings of all the parameters.
So, Ad Hoc connection is possible possible on A Flytouch2 under Eclair.
Now, my rant... it is unconscionable that this is not supported natively in Android. I would speculate that this was a conscious decision by Google resulting from pressure from the big carriers. What I don't understand is how this capability is available in the iPad!? Apple would certainly bow to external pressure (witness the iPhone) from carrier relationships. They also come with $40/mo built in service... so go figure. Now I am delighted to use both my Android Tablet and my iPad with Ad Hoc WiFi served up from my Cliq on T-Mobile!
I hope my additional notes help someone else.
Im gonna have to look at this tomorrow and see if i can finally connect to my omnia 2 running wmwifirouter

[Q] questions from a beginner

I am totally new to android, but I decided to try to root my phone anyway, mostly to be able to access the eduroam network at my school.
1) I succeeded in rooting my x10mini using the exploid method (this took me two whole days because I was so scared to break my phone lol), but after I updated today, through PC companion, I seem to have lost root. Should I not accept SE updates? Do I just root it again the same way I did the first time?
2) I downloaded Market Access to be able to download Wifi Config Editor. After installing Market Access, if I try to download something off the market, it takes a couple of minutes before the download starts. Even when I am in my own country's market. Is this normal?
3) How do I stop the emulation of foreign SIM card? So far I have tried emulating my original provider or restarted the phone.
4) If someone calls me while I am emulating a foreign provider, will the call be more expensive or something?
5) I tried to directly change the wifi settings with professordes instructions in the original exploid thread
Now that root is in wild one immediately useful thing to do is fix the WPA-PEAP which is missing. I need this for the eduroam university network at work.
So, with the phone connected and usb debugging on/wifi toggled off, from the androidSDK on a PC (Windows,Linux,Mac) get a shell.....
1) adb shell
2) su
3) cd /data/misc/wifi
4) busybox vi wpa_supplicant.conf
(to edit the wpa configuration file)
5) add this at the end
network={
ssid="eduroam"
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP IEEE8021X
eap=PEAP
identity="MYIDENTITY"
password="SECRET"
phase1="peapver=0"
phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
priority=7
}
or similar, where MYIDENTITY is your eduroam login ID and SECRET is your password. This is taken verbatim from another phone (HTC Desire, Android 2.2) which does work OK. You could also edit the file off phone and adb push it on, just watch ownerships and permissions don't get munged up.....
6) save
7) log out
8) connect and surf, it works for me
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
I copy-pasted steps 1-5 (I pasted the last step directly after the text in the cmd window). Since I am a noob, I didn't know how to save and exit, so I just closed the cmd window and unplugged usb...
BIG MISTAKE!
...After I restarted it, my phone was completely dead. After a one hour recharge in the wall socket, the phone worked again and it seems fine now.
So, could someone make a step-by-step (noob-)guide on how to successfully change the wifi settings with this metod?
6) Thank you in advance

1 - Updating it removes the root, but you can simply re-root it the same way.
4 - That only applies to the market. It fools it into thinking you're using a SIM from a different country.
