I think I've tried everything but can't get it to work.
I used Paragon Partition Manager 2009 on a windows XP pc and partitioned my 8GB card into fat32, 512MB ext3, and then 32MB linux swap in that order.
I am using the Modaco 2.3 ROM.
When I boot with the card inserted I get a constant reboot cycle (the little android in the letter "O" keeps being repeated). Then, when I remove the card and boot up without it, all my apps are gone.
I have retried this about 4 times and get the same result.
In Partition manager there are options for ext2, ext3, linux swap, linux swap2 but I don't know which to use. Also, should the partitions be primary or extended?
Please help!
try to us this won http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
for future reference all the partitions should be primary.
i rely recommend u try the link i has posted 2 mess before
Partition your SD directly from the menu! (500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32)

+1 on that for sure.
Moved to Q & A
OK, thanks, KinkyGolab. I think it's working!
I now have 104MB free in my phone with lots of apps installed.
I flashed the recovery rom like you said so I now I use that one rather than the cyanogen recovery rom and partitioned the card from within the recovery console.
When I put the card back into my PC and examined it with Paragon partition manager I could see that the swap partition was described as "linux swap2" rather then simply "linux swap" that I had used before. Maybe that was the issue?
Anyway, I'm off to do some testing now.
Thanks again.

Hi i have searched and cant find a clear guide, I have a 8 gig memory card and want to install apps to it. I can easily set a 3.8gig fat32 and 3.9gig etx3 partition but form this point on im lost!!
cheers
delete i figured it
IMHO, 3.9 gig as an EXT3 partition is way too big. It won't hurt of course, but it is rather a waste of space that could be better employed elsewhere.
512mb should be more than enough - indeed most Apps2SD guides I've seen seem to recommend this amount.

Dave

Where? I'm lost yet...
sorry
I figured out where i was going wrong, I used the recovery image to format and part the 2gig that came with it and realised in gparted on linux that it had the LBA flag so i re done it, 6gig fat32 LBA, 1.4gig ext2 and 100meg swap when i booted the phone i then mounted the ext partition and it had already created a apps folder and moved stuff over!! This modaco rom is good!!
1. About Swap
I've used latest nAa kernel and minicm7 for a while, but something bugs me..
It says that nAa kernel has "Swap" function. CUrious, I tried several methods.
Firstly, I tried to use swapper from android market. Seems like it's no use, since typing "free" on terminal emulator shows "0" for swapping (swap data is created already on my SD card). Not working, I uninstalled it.
Then, somebody told me to use swapper 2 since it's working nicely on him. Strangely enough, my market said it's not compatible with my phone.
Third, I tried to create a linux swap file on my SD card with 200 MB size using partition manager. And my phone runs lag like hell. So, I finally delete the partition again and wipe factory reset etc.
My question is : How do I turn swap things on ?
2. About Ext4
Until recently (before I created linux swap partition on my SD card and finally erased it again), I never create an ext4 partition on my SD card. Now, I'm trying to use it. What is the difference between using an ext4 partition and not ?
Thank you very much for your answer

Here's the problem.
Apps2SD
SD swap files
SD cache files
All this adds up in total bandwidth use.
And then the speeds when reading and writing from the card are not really up to the task.
Even my Big x10i was not up to the task with a class 8 SD
The best would be for developers to partition a small piece of 'internal' storage to allow for a swap file.

Hi
I want to use swap feature in my mini cm7! Any 1 plz provide me full details How to activate swap and to use in my xperia mini cm7 Rom??
One forum member told me to create SWAP partition on my memory card with MiniTool Partition Wizard (pc program - freeware) and that is all.
Phone finds it itself and will use it automatically.
(to check if you really use Swap partition DL and open "terminal emulator" and type "free")
Instructions how to do that you can find here on forum (it is almost the same thing like creating EXTx partitions).

I have created the ext partition but the phone does not recognize it automatically what to do? Am not using a2sd
U did not provide instructions website plz help
If you use latest minicm7 with latest nAa kernel, there is the swap partition really automatically mounted and used.
In MiniTool Partition Wizard you have to create new partition (not option EXT but option Linux Swap). The tutorial how to make EXT partition is here on forum (i cant find it right now), and instead of EXT, choose LINUX SWAP.
After that just start your phone and done.
If you need to check - you need Terminal Emulator installed in your phone, open it and type "FREE" and submit. Then you will see many rows and there is one begining with SWAP ... used/free values...
btw. EXT3/4 phone automatically recognizes too, but it doesnt help with swapping

Ok you mean I should make swap partition from the partition tool am going to do this...
But can u plz tel me what about I select for swap partition..?
I wrote it before, it is the same like creating ext partition, but only difference is that you choose LINUX SWAP instead of EXT3/4...
Label: you can write here swap or something
Drive letter: here you choose the memory card
Create as: Primary
File system: LINUX SWAP
Cluster size: Default
Successfully using swap in my mini cm7
And checked through terminal emulator by typing free its giving values and after opening applications the values are different and mobile runs fast..
One question in mind that I can't use a2sd and swap at the same time???
I have two partition. One for ext4 and other swap both are set to be primary but swap partition is mounted and other ext4 does not mounted checked through mini cm7 builtin feature
Any suggestions?
Man, I dont know what is your problem, but you can use SWAP and EXT partitions both together simultaneously.
Yesterday I bought a new msd and created around 600MB SWAP partition (primary), today 2GB EXT3 partition (primary) and rest let in FAT32.
Before I done this, I formated msd with Panasonic SD Formater.
Now Terminal shows me about 30 - 100MB used / 500 MB free SWAP and in CM7 settings I have showed and succesfully mounted 2GB size EXT3 with free 1.8GB.
So there must be problem with memory card, try to format it
--------------------------------------
EDIT: After that creating ext3/4 partition, restart your phone and now you can choose the A2SD settings.
MENU - SETTINGS - CYANOGEN MOD - PERFORMANCE - A2SD SETTINGS - i chose here A2SD. And restarted phone again.
and
MENU - SETTINGS - CYANOGEN MOD - APPS - "INSTALL PLACE" - choose automatic / intern (phone memory)
It works that all aplications installed to phone memory are in EXT partition of your msd! Only few files rests in phone memory.
You can everytime move apps from SD to (ext - phone mem) in APP MANAGER.
EDIT2: Looks like there are some troubles... after few restarting phone all apps in EXT dissappeard and could restore them... Trying to recover them...
If you have been having issue with exfat card even after formatting it to fat32 this is probably the solution for you
The 64gb exfat card i have never worked on custom roms no matter what software i used to format it to fat32.
But finally it worked with this one software, Just make sure you follow the instruction correctly.
http://software-files-a.cnet.com/s/...&pid=12572695&psid=10863346&&fileName=epm.exe
First use easeus to delete the partion in 64 gb card.
then Click Start menu, select Run and enter diskmgmt.msc
You need to find the disk with unallocated space. Right click on it and select "New Partition" and follow these steps, clicking "Next"
Enter the maximum size for the Partition Size
Choose assign a drive letter. I used F:
Select "Do not Format this partition"
Click Finish
Now you have a drive letter, this is what we will pass to the formatter
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip
Now download a copy of fat32format. Extract the EXE file to C:\
Click Start->Run and enter cmd (as admin)
type this - C:\fat32format f:
enter y to continue
Now the sd card should work on phone.

An easier alternative which doesn't require CMD or the use of multiple tools is HP Usb Format Utility:

If it works then sure. i already used 3 recommended softwares all failed so i dont know if this will work.
Thanks for this guide
I always format and re-partition in Linux ...
I always format and re-partition in Linux ... and currently all my large microSD cards have been re-partitioned with the following layout:
- free space (4 MB on 32GB, 16 MB on 64GB - since that's how those came from factory )
- main partition (primary partition 1 - I format that as Fat32 in Linux but then I go to Win7 and re-format to exFat; exFat works perfectly in Android 4.x from Samsung (and good mods) and the CWM recovery from CrisKelo ROM can work just perfectly with exFat when doing backup/restore; other (even newer) CWM versions/alternatives might NOT be OK with exFAT or stuff over 32GB!
- 512 MB Linux swap (primary partition 2) - this gets mounted by special mods that give the kernel virtual memory
- free space at the end (at least 4 MB on 32GB, at least 16 MB on 64GB)!
The only drawback is that at this moment there is no program (on PC or phone) that can resize exFAT - so you need to reformat! That is in contrast to NTFS / FAT32 / ext2 / ext3 / ext4 - which can all be resized perfectly - and IMHO NTFS could be a better option that exFAT (for journaling, even if I do not write that much anyway), but unfortunately there is no serious support for it on CWM; ext3/ext4 could also be even better from the Linux standpoint (but not for the usual Windows user that might have problems reading it) - but again is (surprisingly) not so supported by either CWM nor most ROMs
Just got new Sandisk 64GB cards and was having a heck of a time getting them to play nice with Paranoid Android, this guide was simple, painless and most of all, effective. Thank you much for posting this information.
Works with cyanogenmod nightly 2013-02-17 and ubuntu
So I have tried it out and it worked.

YOU RULE!
Thanks!! I have only been able to get my Scan Disk Ultra 64G card to work with Perseus kernel and would have to flash it to all Roms then use a hack to swap the internal to get it to work. It was a Pain in the ass and limited my Kernel usage. THANK YOU SO MUCH WHAT A USEFUL POST!! Stick to this plan it works. I have yet to see any other solution. I been dealing with this problem since I had my Galaxy note2 almost a year now.
PS do not use that crappy HP USB format 2.2 whatever program some guy suggested a bunch of malwar garbage I cant get off my computer now THANKS BUDDY Crawl back under a rock which you came.
Thanks for the wonderful help everyone who got it working
Sent from my SHG-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

i have no idea the swap system, as stock, it already has driver for ex fat but since you changed some stuff it might have ruined that driver.
try your card on another phone with stock rom and same android version. if it works then you dont need to change sd card format, just reinstall ROM on your phone.

i know, that is reason i posted this. i tried about 10 software and then i found this weird way of doing it and it actually works.
all those fancy software dont do anything besides slowing computer down.
glad to know i was of some use
Hi guys,
I have a Sony ericsson X10 mini pro with nAa's Kernel 2.6.32.60-nAa-05 and miniCM10-4.1.0-20130518-NIGHTLY and I also flashed:
gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip,
miniCM7-SEMC_kb.zip and
querty_br.zip
On top of that a internal memory of 192MB and a 16GB SDHC class10 SD card.
Boring story part (with more details and links and stickie just in case I forget something ) :
So far so good until I start installing apps and noticed that with a couple the memory was full. After a little research I found link2SD was the solution,
the SD card I have is more than fit for the job.
But then starter the problems, after I partitioned, with MiniTool,
my SD card as FAT32 (~13GB) and ext-N (2, 3 & 4) (~1GB) as primary none worked (at least for long).
I had some success with Ext-3 but the 2nd time I restarted my phone, Scrips were nowhere to be seen nor any linking of some kind.
Then (after more Googling) I tried both partitions as FAT32 and there it was working cool again.
Well went to download more apps, but memory was full, how so? I added a GB to it!
Found that I would, also, need to use A2SDGUI and it's Scripts (Version 2.7.5.3 Beta 04).
Flashed the scripts and then tried to run A2SDGUI not working pop's this error window:
Exiting A2SDGUI
Could not start for one of these reasons:
Your device is not rooted
A2SD scripts could not be found
No EXT partition found
Click to collapse
Now I'm in trouble because android DOES NOT mount my 2nd partition if it's filesystem is not FAT32
(perhaps this is a scripting problem instead of Filesystem support ? )
And A2SDGUI is no longer being developed/suported.
Bottom line:
I installed link2SD but it only works when my 2nd partition is also FAT32, or else it won't mount,
and the phone internal memory continues to get shorter as I install apps.
Then I installed A2SDGUI and (Flashed) it's Scripts to try to JOIN the internal memory(/data)and SD card's 2nd partition so,
android doesn't give that annoying low memory error message.
I'm having trouble making andoid think that /data is ~1.2GB.
Can someone help me out on this? How can I "make" a "bigger" internal memory?
I searched Google but I couldn't find any GOOD answer to my question.
