Hi i have searched and cant find a clear guide, I have a 8 gig memory card and want to install apps to it. I can easily set a 3.8gig fat32 and 3.9gig etx3 partition but form this point on im lost!!

IMHO, 3.9 gig as an EXT3 partition is way too big. It won't hurt of course, but it is rather a waste of space that could be better employed elsewhere.
512mb should be more than enough - indeed most Apps2SD guides I've seen seem to recommend this amount.

I figured out where i was going wrong, I used the recovery image to format and part the 2gig that came with it and realised in gparted on linux that it had the LBA flag so i re done it, 6gig fat32 LBA, 1.4gig ext2 and 100meg swap when i booted the phone i then mounted the ext partition and it had already created a apps folder and moved stuff over!! This modaco rom is good!!

I think I've tried everything but can't get it to work.
I used Paragon Partition Manager 2009 on a windows XP pc and partitioned my 8GB card into fat32, 512MB ext3, and then 32MB linux swap in that order.
I am using the Modaco 2.3 ROM.
When I boot with the card inserted I get a constant reboot cycle (the little android in the letter "O" keeps being repeated). Then, when I remove the card and boot up without it, all my apps are gone.
I have retried this about 4 times and get the same result.
In Partition manager there are options for ext2, ext3, linux swap, linux swap2 but I don't know which to use. Also, should the partitions be primary or extended?
Please help!

OK, thanks, KinkyGolab. I think it's working!
I now have 104MB free in my phone with lots of apps installed.
I flashed the recovery rom like you said so I now I use that one rather than the cyanogen recovery rom and partitioned the card from within the recovery console.
When I put the card back into my PC and examined it with Paragon partition manager I could see that the swap partition was described as "linux swap2" rather then simply "linux swap" that I had used before. Maybe that was the issue?
Anyway, I'm off to do some testing now.

Hello! I've searched all over the internet about this but haven't found any usable information about this. I was thinking about storing music files etc on the ext partition on my SD-card. I've a 8GB sdcard with a 64MB swap, 1024MB FAT32 and rest of the space goes to an ext2 partition. The problem is, how do I acess the ext2 partition in the phone? I know it is placed in /system/sd. But it seems it is only the super-user who has access to this folder. Is it possible to symlink the folder to another place and make it accessible for the user?
Every info I find is about storing apps on the ext-partition, which works. But having 6GB space for apps feels very overkill. FAT32 seems to be quite limited to speed when copying files, and also it have size limit of files.
The easiest and most recommend way to solve your problems is to repartion your card to:
0M swap (no use for swap on hero)
512M ext2 (see below)
rest as FAT (over 7G for your music)
If you plan on having every single one of the apps on the market you can give the ext2 partition 1024MB, no need to give it any more. There are numerous problems that can arise from having larger ext2 partitions, just of the top of my mind if you do have more data on the ext2 partition larger than your FAT free space you can't do a nandroid backup, you'll end up storing too much stuff on the ext partition which is usually wiped on ROM update and replacement, and it is much harder to access these files, as opposed to the FAT partition which is can be mounted as a USB drive to your PC.
Finally note I said ext2, and not ext3/ext4 because Ext3/4 are journaling file systems which are NOT suited for flash devices. They also have much more CPU overhead then ext2. Finally not all ROMs/kernels support ext3/ext4 and for a good reason!

I was thinking to use the ext partition as a storage of music etc instead of the fat32 partition. The ext-partition is faster to copy files on, especially if you get a 32gb card and maybe you want to transfer big files. If I remember it right FAT32 table doesn't allow file-sizes more the 4GB, and it is also slower to copy to or from.
Any linux operating system should be able to read the ext partition on your sd card, or a program such as gparted is another thing to look into. Remember you can boot to linux without installing the operating system (boot from CD). Ubuntu or Knoppix is a good one to check out if you're new to it all.

O in that case you have no chance lol. AFAIK there isn't any program designed for this purpose.

Well it depends where your ROM mounts it. I think most ROMs mount it to /system/sd, so you can use any file explorer with root permissions to browse there (i.e. ES File Explorer).
Sorted it out the hard way - repartitioned with FAT and lost all my apps. Installed them quickly enough with Applanet App Market.

One thing you need to check is if you have chosen 'internal memory' as the place to download applications that you may have downloaded/installed after installing CM1.In that case,choose the 'move to phone' option so that you don't have any apps stored on your ext partition.As long as you have stored apps either in the phone or external which is the FAT partition,there will be no problem at all in getting rid of the partition.Personally,I have never liked any of these ext partitions because I think they slow down the apps stored on them!

what is the ext2/ext3 partitions being used for ? are they only for setup new roms or for use while running the device?
i havent noticed any change with or without ext3 partition beside the low space left on the 2gb memory card...

ext partitions are required to install apps2sd or link2sd so that you can store downloaded applications there instead of clogging your phone memory.These are not required if your OS is Froyo and higher since there is a native apps2sd which helps you move applications to the main FAT portion off the sd card.

I've used latest nAa kernel and minicm7 for a while, but something bugs me..
It says that nAa kernel has "Swap" function. CUrious, I tried several methods.
Firstly, I tried to use swapper from android market. Seems like it's no use, since typing "free" on terminal emulator shows "0" for swapping (swap data is created already on my SD card). Not working, I uninstalled it.
Then, somebody told me to use swapper 2 since it's working nicely on him. Strangely enough, my market said it's not compatible with my phone.
Third, I tried to create a linux swap file on my SD card with 200 MB size using partition manager. And my phone runs lag like hell. So, I finally delete the partition again and wipe factory reset etc.
My question is : How do I turn swap things on ?

Until recently (before I created linux swap partition on my SD card and finally erased it again), I never create an ext4 partition on my SD card. Now, I'm trying to use it. What is the difference between using an ext4 partition and not ?

Apps2SD
SD swap files
SD cache files
All this adds up in total bandwidth use.
And then the speeds when reading and writing from the card are not really up to the task.
Even my Big x10i was not up to the task with a class 8 SD
The best would be for developers to partition a small piece of 'internal' storage to allow for a swap file.

Well im running SE NEO TWEAKED
What i did was went into recovery and made a 1024MB Partiton and 128MB swap And after rebooting im unable to see my SD CARD when mounted to the PC
nor can i see it in settings :O
please do help

I searched a lot and im still confused
Well I'm searching which format is that sd-ext partition, but can't find. Maybe ext3, or ext4.
Thing is that windows or our phones can't see ext partitions without additional drivers, or custom kernels. Last one is strange to me as android is linux, and ext format came from linux.
Anw, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Once I tried to create 1GB ext3(or4 can't remember) partition and rest of my sd card leave in FAT. But windows didn't read it, didn't have time to research, so I format it back to FAT.
You say you were using SE TWEAKED, but which kernel you used? stock?
Iv only on Neo getting this to work once main fat 32 /3 rest of time PC can't read card
