HTC Sense - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has HTC Sense been dropped from the rom yet?
So users on other Android phones are able to use it??
Tried to search, but to many topics, did not have the time to check all of them.
Thx.

anyone????

Users with G1s and Magics have been able to use HTC Sense for ages - since before the Hero was actually formally released. They just need to install an appropriate ROM, usually based on a Hero build.

Dave

Well I have an Android phone what has not yet been released....
So I can't flash those roms.
You have link to some of the roms, or the packages.
So I can complythem and see if I can get it to run on my Android phone.

The phone I have is
3.5” WVGA (800x480)

New owner of HTC Hero with a couple of questions

Hi,
I just bought an HTC Hero off eBay today (still waiting for it) and it comes from T-Mobile but it's unlocked. However, I'm looking at debranding the phone and I want to install the original HTC ROM's instead of T-Mobile's.
I've been reading these forums and there are original HTC ROM's, original HTC but rooted ROM's, custom ROM's and etc... I'm not interested in the custom ones at the moment, I just want to get the original stuff for now, but without the T-Mobile branding. Also, this way, I can always be updated with the latest changes from HTC.
As far as I understand this, I'll have to root it at least once to install a new ROM right? And after that, maybe I should install the generic but rooted HTC ROM so that in the future I have the phone rooted already and everything's easier, correct? Is this the recommend approach or should I install the latest original and untouched HTC ROM?
For now I don't see many benefits from rooting the phone, and I think I just want to make things easier by using the original HTC ROM so that in the future I can use HTC own utilities (RUU I believe) to update the phone. In other others, I'm waiting eagerly for HTC update with Android 2.0 and I just want be able to install it directly from HTC when it comes out. I'll deal with rooting and custom firmwares later if I really see the need.
So, what's the best procedure to install the latest generic HTC ROM?

HTC Hero Android 2.1 Update on Orange UK.....

Hi all,
I see that the "unofficial" official Android 2.1 update for the Sprint Hero was leaked out a few days ago but unfortuantely this does not install on the UK Hero.
Is there anyway to force install this ROM onto the UK Hero? Im a bit of a noob when it comes to flashing Android handsets.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan.
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A. Please post all future queries in the Q&A forum.
Ta
If I remember correctly, the Sprint Hero is a CDMA-device, so the 2.1 ROM is built for different (albeit very similar indeed) hardware. So it will not work (not properly, if at all) even if you do get it to flash. But rest assured, now that the official Sprint 2.1 ROM is out there, ROM cookers will probably dissect it and make it work for the GSM Hero.
And I believe now that the official GSM Hero 2.1 update isn't far behind anymore, just a matter of Google approving of it (and since HTC gave each localized version of the Hero its own SKU, Google has to approve of them per localization, something HTC has since fixed by using one SKU internationally for the Legend and one internationally for the Desire, but sadly, this is why updates for the Hero roll out so sporadically).
if it were useful, it would have been ported already. it's entirely possible you could force it to install but that could leave you with a non-functioning phone or one that's un-rootable... personally I'm gonna wait for the final release from here, once it's safe and tested. have patience!
i wouldnt even bother using a 2.1 rom untill we have a fully funcional kernel from source.Last night HTC Tweeted that....

Because we know how much you developers love source code...Legend, Incredible, Desire, and Eris(2.1) kernels are online. http://ht.ly/1MODf

So we will mroe than likely have to wait for there release of 2.1 before we can even get a taste of that sought after kernel

Rom upgrade for vodafone HTC Hero question

Hi,
I have done loads of windows mobile rom upgrades in the past, however I would like to upgrade a colleague's HTC Hero rom to Andriod version 2.1 (one of the first Heros and is on Vodafone).
1) Do you know if there is an official upgrade for this now?
2) If not, is there a reliable unofficial upgrade I can do to get this to Andriod 2.1 ? If so which Rom would you recommend.
3) What guides should I use?
Obviously I expect to use HTC sync to back everything up first etc.
Many thanks
There is no official 2.1 release for the HTC Hero, check the sticky at the top of the forum.
Are you familiar with rooting? If so, you have a few very good 2.1 ROMS that work, although come with bugs.
Many thanks for your response.
I'm not familiar with rooting on the android, do you have any links / guides on how to upgrade?
Also, what bugs come with the upgrade, anything that would make it not worthwhile?
Thankss

Perhaps its wise to wait a few weeks for the official HTC 2.1 ROM.
I can't take THAT long anymore.

Follow BTDAG's guide linked in my signature,... It has all the info a beginner could ever need.
There are a few good 2.1 ROMs available now,... and many more will come in the next week or two.
I can only personally recommend Villain6 and VillianSlide as they are the only two i have played with.... But have also heard very good things about RADUG's Vanilla Eclair, and ROBIN04's AOSP ANDROBIN. But i'd hold of testing ROBIN04's until he has implemented a new kernal, cant be a long wait for that though.
Cool,
I'm going to upgrade tomorrow.
Are there any good backup tools to backup ur emails, settings and text messages then I can restore to the new 2.1 version?
Thanks

noob questions (upgrading)

Hi, I've done tons of Windows mobile upgrades in the past but despite reading through the posts on here, I'm still stuck.
1) I have a HTC Hero (UK Vodafone with the original rom) and want to upgrade to 2.1 in the quickest / smoothest way
2) I'm not bothered about keeping anything at all on the phone
3) Can I use one of official HTC 2.1 roms? If so, will that be easier? i.e. will I need 'rooted' ROMS etc?
Many thanks

If you are remotely interested in rooting or using custom software, then DON'T TOUCH OFFICIAL UPDATES. If you install an official HTC update, you won't be able to root again.
TBH, you are better installing a rooted custom ROM. If you choose to go down this route, you have come to the right place.
In terms of ROMs which are very close to the official HTC update (ie. have HTC Sense), take a look at (in no particular order, all are pretty similar)
VillainROM 10.2
Cronos 1.x (can't remember what is latest version)
42Turkey's ROM
Modaco Custom ROM 4.0
etc.
or just browse round the site till something takes your fancy.
Thread moved to Q&A.
and use BTDAG's guide linked in my signature for step by step instructions on how to do it.
Many thanks for all your help.
I followed it to the letter (using gold card method)
and it worked a treat.
Used Villain Rom in the end.
I've flashed loads of windows mobiles and iphones before but never an android device. This was my boss's phone so was a bit nervous.
It's certainly more complicated than flashing windows or iphones but just as satisfying!
Cheers
Now you'v done the hard leg work it'l be much easier for your boss from now on.

[Q] Vibrant ROMS question

Ok so i just very recently got an android phone, the vibrant, after over a year of researching and waiting. Ive looked through and found that CyanogenMod 6 is very nice, but it doesnt support Vibrant yet. I hate TouchWiz and I want to get to either regular vanilla android or HTC Sense, vanilla being preferred. I also need 2.2. SO is it possible to install another phone's ROM, like the G2, and install it on the Phone? If so, do i need any special procedures? And one last thing, if the answer to my first question is no, is there any way to install vanilla android on the thing?
EDIT: Solved the problem found a bunch of ROMS on the site. Please close this thread. Thanks Anyway!

No, you can't install ROMs from other phones like the G2 on this device.
HTC Sense is still being ported.
There is no full Vanilla ROM (Anderdroid's AOSPish FroYo is the closest you can get)
2.2 is just leaked for the vibrant though, no official.. And the leak has bugs.
ok thanks. For now ill probably use the one you listed or this other one, Onyx or whatever. When CM6.1 comes out, ill use that
