Back-up HTC Hero before ROM-upgrade - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I have a little question: Suppose that I buy a new HTC Hero and boot it up for the very first time. I don't change anything in the System Settings, don't make calls, write sms, download apps.. I do NOTHING with it. Because first of all, I want to put the new official ROM (ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero_2.73.405.5) on it. Is it necessary to make a back-up of the pre-installed apps on the Hero (those who came with the device) and the rest of the software. I'm speaking of the European version (NOT Sprint).
If so, what is the difference in back-up options between HTC Sync (comes with it, on the micro sd card) and apps from the Market, like MyBackup Pro?
Thanks in advance !!
Greets

If by pre-installed apps you mean Music, People, Peep (Twitter client), Google Maps, etc. then no, you don't need to back it up before you update it

Hi!
Thanks for the response and yeah, by "pre-installed", I mean EVERYTHING that is on the Hero when you take it out of the box and boot it up the very first time (going from "Messages" to "Peep", "Google Maps" and even the WIDGETS).
Ty!

another question about this ROM-update:
after the upgrade, do you get the "intro" again, where you have to insert your gmail-adres, facebook-info etc , the whole initial setup, for syncing with gmail etc. Or is that information still in the phone?
thanks!

Hey,
Everything will be there. Once you've updated, you can do a factory reset from the settings to get the "intro" again after the boot.

Transfering apps from one ROM to another

Hi
Has anyone found a way (which works) to transfer apps from one ROM to another (both having apps2sd running) without having to reinstall them all,
also a decent way to get contacts across would be helpfull as the HTC Sync is a bit dodgy,
Regards
and thanks in advance
Contacts is easy, just sync it with google.
As for apps2sd, won't it just automatically recognise your apps and run them? I'm not 100% on this, really.

Yes it will. But not for the market.
Anyone know how to transfer your apps so that it works with Android market?
i don't see a way. maybe works if you install them in both roms, so that they stay in both markets once you installed them in both.
you can try to copy the market db everytime you switch roms, but it will most probably break. at least when switching between 1.5 and 2.1. and why am i writing this the second time in two minutes?
You can use titanium backup, it saves links from the market, but works only on rooted pohne

[Q] System update

After hacking the phone to run webtop without the docks, I was just going about my phone and was curious about the "System updates" button and got this:
Social Networking account required
"com.android.setttings.deviceinfo.CheckUpdate" is not available without a social networking account. To create a new account, click "Setup" button
When I click the setup button, nothing happens. Did I mess up one of the files during the process of hacking my phone, because before attempting the webtop hack, when I still had root and adeo on, I did not get this message.
Account syncing: my facebook account will not sync with the contacts on my phone. The social networking app and widget is not running properly for the same reason as from the message given above ^^.
Can someone help me with this? Thanks
Did you use Titanium Backip to freeze apps. This is a symptom of freezing apps. To get this to work unfreeze all your apps and make sure the MotoBlur account is syncing.
I didn't use titanium backup to freeze any of the apps. I'm still kind of new to android and so I might need some guidance in more simpler terms
Did you create a blur account?
yes and it was already linked when I received my unit on the 21st
would it be reasonable to attempt a factory reset, even though I rooted it and installed ADEO?

What exactly does freezing do? I can't seem to find a answer on the net. Can one manually "defrost" a frozen app?

I think so, I'm pretty sure TiBu just adds a ".bak" to the application because when you freeze something it's still in your app drawer until you restart your phone vs when it's uninstalled its gone instantly. The benifit to freezing vs uninstalling is if you freeze the wrong thing or want it back it's still there, but if you uninstall it it's gone and you'd need to ask someone else for it or something.
anyone solved this error? I also got the error today
Is your phone deodexed? That could be the problem maybe.

Adeo v0.2 will break your Blur widgets.
So now that adeo does this how can i get upfates

[Q] Move apps back to phone before factory reset?

Hi,
This is going to be such a "noob" question & I apologize in advance.
I have an Orange UK branded HTC Desire HD running stock firmware & NOT rooted. Since the fairly recent 2.3.5 update with Sense 3.0 I have found that I am regularly seeing Sense restart upon exiting an app and returning to the home screen. This is not related to a particular app, as it can happen when returning to home from ANY app. My wife is seeing the same behaviour on hers too.
Having posted on both HTC's & Orange's Facebook pages, I have been advised in no uncertain terms that as a first step I should perform a factory reset.
This is something that I have not done since I got my DHD (my 1st Android - plenty of hard resets on WM ). I have had a bit of a tidy up - clearing unnecessary data, uninstalling apps I don't use, etc. Pretty much ready to reset (but aware that there is SOME data that I will lose). However, there is one thing that I am unsure about...
I have previously moved a number of apps to the SD card. If I leave them there, will the existing data be recognised upon reinstalling the apps? Or will it cause me problems? Or will the existing data just be orphaned? I.e. should I move all apps back to the phone before performing the reset?
Thanks in Advance
Saving them SD leaves a bit on your phone, so that wont help. Just back them up with your google account!
The apps and system data will be wiped regardless of it being on the sdcard or not. You can perform a manual backup by enabling debugging and using adb to pull the apps from your phone to your computer.

Ok, thanks RTContent. I think that answers my question. So I needn't worry about moving stuff back, which is good.
I have no experience of using ADB. Would this backup just the APKs? Or the settings & user data too?
AlwaysDroid: "Just back them up with your google account" - Not sure I get what you mean. Are you referring to the way Google Play will auto restore apps from your install list? TBH, I was banking on this working correctly. Hopefully it will only reinstall those that were on the device, and not ALL previously installed apps. Especially as some of those were from my tablet only.
Not sure that now is the time to start dabbling with ADB, so will probably just go ahead with the reset and lose non synced app data.
Thanks.

[Q] software auto install Q

I'm sure this has been discussed but i can't figure out what words to search for to find it.
So when i flash over to a new rom, sometimes after a wipe and reload google play connects and dloads any and all apps i had installed before. This is without any input from me whatsoever.. and sometimes it doesn't. What's the trigger here? what makes this happen or not happen?
thanks

When you're setting up the new rom it will usually ask you if you want to sync with the email account you've entered. I leave those beginning sync boxes UNCHECKED. That way, Google Play will not reload all your apps. You can then use Titanium Backup or whatever backup program you might use. Then when you are finished loading everything you want, turn your sync back on in settings.
Long story short, it is the account sync features that cause Google Play to reload all you apps.

Thanks! makes perfect sense now, because on this reload the setup wizard crashed on me, last time it went though and i did hit sync. this time i added an account later. Had similar story on my old phone, presumably due to similar reasons.

Smart Switch Alternative? How Transfer Full Data Backup to new Samsung Phone? - Android 12

Hello,
So I just transfered my Data throught Smart Switch, wich was basically a good thing.
However on one part Iam really not so happy and need a better way.
Because if you want to transfer your Accounts as well (check this Option), you get forced to activate WIFI & Internet - for everything else you don't need to.
Why? Probably because Smart Switch wants to send your accounts to the samsung servers, wich is done pretty fast, because the accounts are basically just text.
I don't want to send my accounts around and I bet you don't want to as well. Except you do sync everything... then its too late anyway.
So my Question is:
Is there a good workaround or another tool, wich lets you transfer your main accounts - without sending them to samsung or anyone?
What is your experience? And do you know a workaround?
Please let me/us know

Never trust SmartSwitch with critical data.
Make backups for contacts and all apps the allow you export/import settings/data. Use ApkExport to make installable copies of all your apps and updates.
All critical data like images, music, vids should be backed up as folder and should already be redundantly backed up to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
When going to a different model it's best not to use SmartSwitch. For the same device I use it to transfer homepage settings only.
A clean load yields best results... and can last years with minimal maintenance if you don't do stupid stuff including firmware updates and upgrades.
Yeah, I think so as well.
However APK Export is from 2018. I don't think It can be trusted either. Especially with Android 12 etc
Also I didn't give SmartSwitch Internetaccess, because of AFwall, so Iam ok with that.
Problem is now, how to transfer all the accounts? I don't like to do it all manually.
It doesn't let me do it without an Internetconnection, wich can't be trusted. I don't want to send all my accounts to samsung, lol. That seems to be the only purpose, why there needs to be an Internet Connection with the Accounts.
Before Titanium Backup was great and also it took all the Accountdata with it (whatsapp etc).
Now there seems to be Swift Backup, but I need to test it first.. it doesn't seem to be that powerful.

Well I'm running Android 9 and 10, deliberately.
The ApkExport is clean freeware.
It either will work with 12 or not.
Easy enough to test.
Now Iam also searching for another Alternative.
So basically to have the Function like Smart Switch, but for any Phone, so you can at least quickly transfer contacts etc. - any Ideas?
Edit: maybe found some ways here:
https://mobiletrans.wondershare.com/samsung-transfer/alternatives-for-samsung-smart-switch.html
Edit2:
they are all not as good as Smart Switch so far... damn.
Edit3: Here is Smart-Switch and many Alternatives - wich need to be tested..
smart switch - Android Apps on Google Play
Enjoy millions of the latest Android apps, games, music, movies, TV, books, magazines & more. Anytime, anywhere, across your devices.

But Iam still searching for a good way to also transfer the accounts savely to an S22U.
Damn a Smart-Switch Mod would be awesome.

Backup as a text or wdoc so you can cut/paste.
You need to redundantly backup critical data by tried and proven methods or you risk getting your data splattered like a NYC crime scene.
Ok, now I have an S21 Ultra ^^
But still I had this Problem... and some apps didn't had their app data.
I have both rooted phones. Isn't there a better alternative?
Edit again:
Before I always used Titanium Backup in this Case, wich worked great, but sadly does not work on Android 11/12 properly and now it seems to be abandonware.
However here I found a possible solution/alternative:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=swift+backup
But I wonder again, why you have to login to your google account with this tool...
And here are some solutions as well:
