Hi guys, been having this problem today with my Google Mail on my Hero. It seems that although it can download mail it can't send or delete mails.
When I try sending emails it just gets stuck on "sending...". And if I try to delete emails it will disappear from my Google Mail on the phone but not from my actual account ie I can still see the mail when I log in on the web.
Also, it is also not picking up that my mail has been read.
All this points to a problem with the Google IMAP service. Is anybody experiencing this problem? Any idea for a fix? I wanted to reset the setting on the phone but couldn't find out where the setting was and didn't want to do a factory reset.
You can try going to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications and clearing the data/cache for Gmail and Gmail Storage. I haven't tried this personally but I think that holds your login information and related data. It shouldn't destroy your actual data stored at GMail.

Well...actually it doesn't. It just clears the email cache so all your email gets downloaded again.
But I have found a solution to my problem after. a bit of reading. It seems like it is possible for IMAP labels to get out of sync with what is happening on the phone. So I deleted the IMAP folders and things are back to normal.

How do you delete the IMAP folders? One more question, if I have the caches on the SD card, how do I clean them? Thanks for help

What i meant was delete the IMAP labels in GMail. When I log into the GMail I see 3 IMAP labels for Drafts, Sent and Trash. So I just deleted these 3 labels.
To clear your cache just to go Settings > Applications and find the Google Mail application and clear all data.

Oh OK, now I understand about the lables.
But about the caches, ever since I have moved them to the SD card using TA utility (aka Cache 2 SD), going to the app via Manage Apps always shows the respective cache to be empty. But I do see the caches on the SD card. What to do now?? Am I doing something wrong??
You gotta click "Refresh" after sending an email or deleting or starring or whatever. Then Gmail application sends your updates to server and marks your emails related to whatever you did on your mobile.
My contacts storage is about 70MB. It keeps getting bigger every day. Any ideas why ad any ideas how I can reduce the size? I have to keep deleting apps because my phone storage is getting low.
how many contacts u have? 10 million? keep the contacts pics on sd card might help if u have a lot of them
I appear to have the same problem, currently 28.58MB.. I have my contacts sync with Exchange server and FB but pretty much all the images are tiny..
Any help would be v.much appreciated
i seem to have the same problem
i didn't notice this before, but after i updated my desire to froyo, i became quite annoying as, for some reason when the phone is on low space, the phone doesn't sync my gmail and other mail accounts, it can't download any applications, and gtalk just crash even before opening. so i tried to remove the apps that i didnt really need but every single time it when went to low space within 3 to 4 hours of the deletion of apps, i finally noticed that it was the contact storage that was ever increasing, it was 52.88MB while i was registering on the forum.....it's now 53.14MB. so if someone knows a way around it that doesn't include deleting all contacts , your help will be very much appreciated.
i have a feeling that the reason the contact storage is so big is because of all the data the UI pulls from facebook and twitter, but then again I might be wrong.
I too have problems with this. My phone is now running ridiculously slowly due to what reminds me of a memory leak.
I just removed both the Facebook application as well as removing my Facebook for HTC Sense account in 'Accounts and Sync'. I then deleted Contacts Storage from running applications, and having deleted these, I now only have my Google and SIM card contacts (and phone).
I think the new Facebook is what's responsible for this ****up.
EDIT: I think the new Facebook is definitely what's causing this. A workaround that seems to fix it for me is to select 'Don't sync' in the Facebook settings (not the native Facebook but the one you get through Market). On the other hand, if you let Facebook for HTC Sense sync with contacts, you will still get the information in your contacts screen (Facebook 'link', photo, birthday etc.)
A ****ty solution but at least a somewhat working one.
I think i have the same problem, i noticed that when my FB starts synching my contacts (coming from a fresh wipe, for example) my phone memory starts to decrease dramatically (38MB down to 17 MB to 15 MB ...)
I say "i think" because I do not know of a solid way to measure how much Facebook contacts actually eat up? any suggestions on where to find this info?
I have my phone contacts linked with their FB profiles so I get bday info, profile pics and stuff, this might be quite a lot (well i only have 500+ FB contacts)..
Is there anyway to have a workaround with this- maybe to store these FB profile pics and info to SD instead? or something, i dunno...any opinions would be really appreciated.
UPDATE 1: so I went into Manage Applications > Running (sorted a-z) and found out that "Contacts Storage eats up 50+ MB - is this the culprit?
If so, here are some questions:
1. If i clear do "clear data" on contacts storage - will it delete all my FB contcts and make it go back to 0 (under view menu on people app)? If so, then how can I "link" my phone contacts to their FB profile pics if they'll not be listed in my contacts?
2. Is there a way toa ctually move these info to SD? (i see that the "move to SD option is greyed out on this one)
Thanks!
UPDATE 2:
So I did try clearing the data for my contacts storage, but backed up all my contacts first. After clearing, it indeed deleted everything. Right now I am not ready to let go of my phone contacts to facebook contacts linking, thus, I still resynched them, but this time I left my Google contacts unsynched (those were like 500+ contacts) so now contacts storage is just taking up 22MB- not bad.
If there will soon be a way to move contact storage data to SD (and, say that process keeps the "read lag" to a minimum) then that would be great!
HTC EVO - contacts using too much memory
I am having a similar issue. I sync the HTC Evo with ACT! with about 2700 contacts. I dont sync with Google or FB - I use Companionlink via DejaOffice. When I first sync the People application (contact storage) displays about 7.9MB used. Within a few days this number jumps to 294MB and the device warns of low memory. I dont include pics on contacts or anything that might blow up the memory. Any ideas?
I have this problem too.
73.5mb contact storage size... really annoying.
Mine is around 3-400 phone contacts and then 3.500 facebook contacts, and it's the facebook contacts that's the big problem here.
****ty.
If just the contact storage could be saved on the sd card?!?
found this: http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile-pulse-pulse-modaco-com/315662/contact-storage-move-to-sd/
but i dunno if indeed there is any truth to that thread...still hoping any genius would find a way to move Contacts Storage to SD...
I just unsynced my facebook contacts... (the facebook app on android is garbage anyway..)
contact storage instantly jumped from 18mb to 10mb
still, 10mb seems really high for just a few hundred contacts....
I've got all my contacts in Gmail and have them synced to the phone.. i dont have any numbers stored on the phone or the sim.
Could this be why?

I had 40 mb! I got it to 2m with 250 contacts. Here is how. I have my contacts backed up by saving them top google. If you didn't do it that way back them up some how. Then I went to settings then accounts and sync. Then I went to facebook and removed the account. Then I went to settings then applications then manage applications then contacts storage. I cleared the data. then google synced and put them back in. I downloaded an app off of the market called SyncMyPix and that put all of the facebook profile pictures back on my contacts. Plus my battery lasts four hours longer.
any other solution?

I had 25mb of Contacts storage used. I exported my contacts to the SD card as a vcf using export option in menu under People app . Then using Application Manager cleared all data in contacts storage. Then imported contacts back in. Result was reduction in contacts storage down to 1.68mb.
Well, my contacts storage is a whopping 378 MB!
I can't believe it myself.
I've searched for an answer but couldn't find one.. my gmail app won't send any emails. It just says "sending" forever. I'm using a rooted vibrant on stock 2.1 rom, with JAC's kernel.
There have been a few people myself included experiencing this sporadically but I haven't seen a fix or a reason why it's doing this just yet.
Sent from my awesome Vibrant using XDA App
I have yet to be able to actually send an email via Gmail on my phone. I can receive them all day long, but the times I try to compose a message, they just say "sending" forever.
Also, I have noticed that when i receive a message and delete it, it doesn't actually delete it from my Gmail. I have to log into the webmail or use my desktop.
I'm running the stock rom, rooted.
I used to have this happen on my g1 frequently, haven't had it happen on my vibrant yet though. Typically when it would happen on my g1, I would go into the google apps and clear all the data. Couldn't just do it on gmail either, had to do the other google apps too for whatever reason, then it would work again.
Good luck, it's pretty annoying.
Try k9. It's a bit slow at times but it's pretty solid. Best email app I've found yet. I use it for msn, live, gmail, yahoo and my company email.
Honestly I'm pretty disappointed in the stock email apps that came with this phone. I think they're kinda garbage. Apparently my Sidekick '08 was better for that, not to mention the lack of IM.

This happened to me yesterday for the first time. I chalked it up to the gmail servers having issues. But as soon as I plugged in the charger the emails went out. Maybe if battery is low it won't send email? It didn't tell me it wasn't going to send them, it just didn't send them.
I find that I have to go to gmail and manually send each one from the outbox, they still say sending but they actually do send after doing that, because the recepient always says they get it.
So for example, if you send a pic from gallery, make sure you go to gmail after, go to the outbox then click on the mesage and then click send.
* To get to outbox go to gmail then click menu > labels
Sucks but works till we get froyo yo
i'm on a Samsung captivate running the leaked jh3 firmware. It's rooted and running SuperRooter and circle clock.
I noticed that after reflashing to the stock jh3 gmail would send
After installing superrooter gmail would send
After installing circle clock gmail would send
But after I backed up apps with titanium backup it stopped working. I think TiBU is causing an issue for me.
Anyone else have TiBU in your problems some how?
Update: Got it working
I did this:
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications, home button then filter, select all. Next Select gmail, clear data and clear cache. Then do the same with gmail storage.
Now it works!

This fixed it for me as well. I am unsure of what caused it to not work in the first place, though.
nice, clearing cache/data worked for me. i was gonna reflash my phone to stock and start from scratch. this saved me a ton of time. +1

my gmail is having the same issue as here, has anyone found a better solution to the problem then clearing the data as that deletes the currently stuck sending gmails.....
also I cant do the process above if its in a conversation, does anyone know how to open a sending gmail when it has all the other responses attached to the top of it??? that process onnly works for individually sent mails, not "replied" mails that bring other messages with it into the outbox.
anyone know how to detach it from the others or even open the data files to remove text using some sort of tool???
bump for some possible resolutions to force the message to send and or view the message to copy text...m even a wayto view data from it so clearing data wontclear message tryingto be sent???
please got a long, important email i need sent...
Seriously doubt this is just a Vibrant issue as it would happen A LOT to me with my MT3G. So far, knock on wood, it hasn't happened with the Vibrant.
I have the captivate running cog2.2 and deleting the cache under "manage applications" worked for me. I was going crazy! Thanks for the help!
I have Titanium Backup and actually had to restore my ROM with ROM Manager and a couple of apps from Titanium Backup and developed this problem. Clearing data and cache under the Gmail App and Storage + Reboot fixed the problem.
Danger
I too have been having issues with emails (and now SMS?) messages stuck in "sending..." mode. I had several emails from a month ago that I just now noticed didn't send, so I backed up gmail, cleared data, restored the emails and tried to send them individually. On the plus side, my emails did send.
On the minus side, some of them had pictures and my phone took the liberty of sending the wrong pictures from my camera (I was "sharing" pictures from the camera app). So to be safe, just delete the emails!
Dangerzone!
bee tee dubs, I'm using Axura 2.2.9.0
Would some kind person tell me how to fix messages getting stuck in my Outbox? The problem occurs randomly, I will try to send a pic or forward an email and it gets stuck. (Sending) You can refresh, sync, reboot phone, etc.... and nothing pushes the message. This happens to me on different ROMs too...
I have checked all around and have found quite a few complaints about the issue but no reasons and no solutions........
Thanks!
Can't say I have had that issue, but to be fair I just use it to read emails and rarely send them. Maybe you could try using gmail through the browser of your choice if it is necessary.
Yes, I had this same issue and found the answer in the KaosFroyo FAQ. Go to settings, manage applications, gmail, and push the clear data button. Confirm the action. The phone will immediately begin a resync with the servers after which you should have all of your email, etc. Send operations should then work without appearing to stall.

For me, it was "Gmail Storage" app instead of "Gmail" app that needed data cleared. Might as well do both for extra measure.
I'll have to try the gmail storage app as well. I've been having this problem the last few days, and clearing the data from the gmail app did not work for me.
Others have recommended a reboot after clearing data. No idea if that helps. Just passing along the info.
Wiping does not help the situation. I think the issue is with Google and the apk itself. They have made a lot of changes to GMAIL since I originally posted this. I have not had this problem in quite some time.
Make sure you have the most current version of the GAPPS.
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/get/various/gapps-mdpi-20100926-signed.zip
I cleared out the data on both the Gmail app and the Gmail storage last night. Now my e-mails are going through, so that's good.
But my browser won't stay open for more than a few seconds. Figures.
Yeah, go into settings - appications - manage applications - Gmail - clear data and cache. Open the gmail app let it reconfiger.
Should work.
For ur browser. Do u have adobe flash installed? If so it makes thr browser do that.
Uninstall it.

But how about the email stuck sending? Clearing the data will delete it, I assume? It only shows me the first line with some dots, so no hope in copy/pasting and resending… unless there is a way to get back to editing it?
anyone know where this info is kept so I could grab it through adb?
thanks!

When you clear data for Gmail and Gmail Storage, it will delete the email that's stuck sending. So before you do that, go to your Drafts folder in the Gmail app and I think you'll be able to edit the email (and copy the text out of it).
My understanding is that this is a known issue, I'm looking for a workaround or resolution.
Using KitKat, and the standard AOSP email client, I setup my corporate email account in the usual way. Everything works the way it is supposed to except for syncing contacts.
Normally I have fewer than 100 contacts, but with KitKat I end up with over 600. From my research into this issue it is because KitKat is syncing the "suggested contacts" from exchange, not just the contacts listed in my address book. I'm not sure who made the decision to do that, but it doesn't sound like the best idea to me.
I see this problem on my tablet which is running the CM 11.0 nightlies, but I do not see it on my HTC One running AndroidNow, even though Android Now is at 4.4. That is what tells me that the problem is in Exchange Services for the standard AOSP client. I confirmed this by finding this site:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...4-4-with-gmail-style-ui-and-a-slide-out-menu/
I downloaded the appropriate files and installed the apks on my HTC One. When I setup my corporate email there I started seeing the same issue.
Does anyone have any news or recommendations on this issue? By the way, I'm not looking for "install such-and-such email client, it's better" type recommendations. I've tried the majority of them already.
Thanks
It is interesting to me that no one has anything to say on this issue. Perhaps no one saw my post?
At any rate, I found a "solution" which is clumsy but seems to do the trick. The suggestion I found in the google forums was to delete the "Suggested Contacts" folder (I did it in the Exchange web mail app), delete the Corporate account and recreate. I did and I now have the correct number of contacts.
From what I have found this problem is caused by code added to KitKat for syncing sub-folders. It is an issue that Google is aware of, but has marked at a very low priority. I assume that means that a real fix for this will be a long time coming.

In case you may not have noticed, there is a open issue for this now:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61979
Im having the same problem with you, but removing the "suggested contacts" folder from Outlook didn't work (not that I should have to do that). It was if the contacts were cached to the phone.... even after removing the account. I even tried disabling sync, putting it in airplane mode, and using "Contact Remover" from the Play Store to delete the contacts from my phone (disabling sync and airplane mode to prevent a total deletion of all contacts on next sync). After that, I removed the account from Android, removed all phone pairings from Exchange (through OWA), and cleared the cache of the phone. As soon as I resynced, they all came back.
I'm beyond pissed. I literally have 5,000 contacts, and I can barely open the People applet. This is ridiculous.

I can't argue with your assessment, especially since it is a known issue that is, apparently, not getting any attention from Google. That is disappointing.

I have this same problem, but it seems to be Exchange email address history (start a new email: start typing address and the autocomplete list appears)that is causing the problem for me. If I delete the history the contact is now longer shown in my contact list. The problem is this history list is ever growing and changing. It seems we are forced to live with excess users until Google gets this fixed.

Ahhh, well that would make sense why deleting the "suggested contacts" folder doesn't fix it. I don't want to flush my autocomplete history. It's quite useful.
In the interim, I'm just 'pushing' my contacts from Touchdown using the "Copy to Phone" option, and not adding the corporate email option for now.
Here is a pretty nice work around to this issue.
Go into outlook and create a new category for all of the contacts you want to sync with your device. Once the contacts are part of the new category, go to your device and in the contacts>>accounts to display>>select the corporate account>> and select which list(select the category you created in outlook>> thats it and resync your contacts.

Agreed, a true fix is still needed. The biggest problem with this solution is making sure you put new contacts into the new category when they are being added.
I have the issue that my phone will not sync to the exchange contacts PERIOD.
It downloaded them fine apparently, but any changes made on the device do not get updated on the server.
WTF? How ****ing stupid is google to break activesync!?
I'm not just having problems with contacts... my entire calendar will not sync. I basically get no meeting reminders. I can log into exchange webmail and check my calendar there, but that is ridiculous.
As for the contacts, none of the tips and tricks in this thread have helped. I have completely deleted "suggested contacts" (which is a shame, because it was actually useful), but my phone is still pulling them from somewhere....
The only thing that works for me is installing Touchdown and using it to sync, then push the contacts to the phone. It does pick up the bullshvt ones...

I can't understand why it cannot be fixed. I don't even fully understand the problem, as I've gone through Outlook/Exchange multiple times cleaning out the "suggested contacts" and still had my phone's contact list spammed with every email address that is and ever was.
It took a long, long time... but I used "Contact Remover" from the Play store and just went down the list checking contacts I wanted to delete. It's much faster than going into each contact, hitting menu, then hitting delete. Still, you have to be careful not to delete contacts you want to keep. Many times, they're named exactly the same as the spam ones.
On a side note, I am struggling to understand why there are so many contacts that have been "augmented" by apps such as Facebook and Lync 2013. I never choose to sync those, but it appears to have done so anyway.
same problem here, contacts on phone (nexus 5) are filled with rubbish now
