Should I A2SD? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi i just rooted my phone and installed MCR. Do you think its worth it to do A2SD on my hero? Will it make the apps run faster? Right now i still have 41MB so thats still a little bit to spare. Should i do it?

Personally I wouldn't bother if I were you, unless you are absolutely out of space. It certainly won't make your phone any faster anyway.
Regards,
Dave

ohh ok, i guess i'll do it when i run out of space then. I also only have a class 2 sd card so it isnt that fast.

It wont make it faster but, if you run more Applications will it ever get slow if you make a big swap?

Install apps to sd card

Hi
To start please dont ask me to use the search function
At the moment I am unable to save apps to my SD card, is this possible without rooting the phone?
Anyone know if it will be possible when htc release 2.1?
Also, does copying the apps to the sd card speed up your phone? anyone with custom ROMS, how much internal memory do you have free when running average amount of apps, ?
If i dont restart my phone it hovers around 80mb and starts to lag,

No - Apps2SD isn't currently an official part of Android, and whilst I expect it to come eventually it, it isn't there yet.

No - chances are the flash memory on your phone is quite a bit faster than your SD card. If anything, it may actually make it slower.

Dave
dave, i have to disagree... on most points.

depends on what you mean by "rooting the phone", but you don't need root access to your rom for apps2sd.

it can be implemented the same way as it is now. it was never available in an official update, and probably never will.

probably not. if there is any change at all it might be slower, as the sdcard is probably slower than the internal flash. whether this is measurable and/or noticable, no idea.

ram or internal storage? storage about 80mb free, don't care about ram. this is a linux system, free ram is wasted ram. windows (mobile) bull**** doesn't count here.

so you are probably talking about ram. try to figure out the reason for the lagging.
thank you both for your replys, so what can I do to speed up the phone, do these custom ROMS, like modaco actually run faster,
I watched a video of a comparison between modaco and the stock ROM, and the stock ROM seemed to work quicker which kinda put me of modaco but I have also read rave reviews about modaco, your thoughts ?

Question about speed and sd card

First off here's what I am running:
GSBv1.5
Cache2Cache
Clocked using the overclocker in the cyanogenmod settings at
Max - 729
Min - 245
Gov - Smartass
I was just wondering, if I have a lot of stuff of my sd card, can this affect the speed of my Eris ? It's probably a stupid question but I was just wondering because I copied all the contents of my sd card onto my laptop then formatted my sd card and flashed Tazz Gingerbread v5 and it seemed pretty fast. Then I added my music back onto the card and my nandroid backup plus some other stuff and now regardless if I use Tazz's GB or Workshed's GB, they both seem really laggy and slow almost to the point where it seemed like the 2.2 roms were faster. Anyone got any input on this ? I mean I could understand maybe the bootup taking a little while because it's trying to read all the files and stuff but would it really make the overall functionality of the device a little slower ? Any tips on making my phone faster like getting rid of apps and stuff like that. I'm really confused because my device (other than the apps that come with the rom) only has 7 apps installed !!! Here are the apps I have installed other than what came on the roms
Advanced Task Killer
Angry Birds (of course)
Camera360 Ultimate
Minimalistic Text
Wireless Tether for Root Users
XDA's App
Zedge
My battery life has also took a change for the worse (only lasting about 6 hours of regular use). I'm thinking the cause for this might be because I didn't wipe the batt stats when I flashed the rom. Hopefully someone can help me out because my phone is really delayed now and draining the battery pretty fast. Thanks guys !!!

Hi, Corporal Hicks. Aliens fan or actual military man? Anyway, you didn't say whether you installed the apps to your SD card or not, which would certainly affect the speed, especially for things that run constantly (not an expert opinion) and on boot.
One other possibility is file fragmentation. I don't know if it would be that fragmented after doing a fresh format and copying things over, though. Raxco PerfectDisk only says I have 5% fragmentation right now, and I haven't reformatted my SD card since perhaps September or so.
Maybe if the directory information (the FAT/File Allocation Table) itself is quite fragmented that would attribute to the slowdown you are noticing, making it take so long to go through the SD card's list of files.

Actual military, stationed in Hawaii for now. 25th ID! Anyway, no I didn't install any apps to the card and oddly enough I wanted to check it again to make sure. So again I deleted everything from my card and reformatted and again it was blazing fast. I'm confused, maybe a virus on my card or something ?

I was in 1AD.
I doubt if it's a virus. Since I haven't tried either CM7 ROM, and I'm not even on CM6 right now, I don't remember if they default to "Automatic" as far as the location of application installs. Might be worth checking in the CM settings, just in case you didn't realize that some got installed to the card without you explicitly telling it to.
Of course, if the phone slows down after copying things back to your SD card (not an .android-secure folder, though, I hope) before you install any apps, then you know it's not because of installing apps. I would then only copy HALF of the things back to the SD card, instead of all, and see if it slows down.
Then as a comparison, I would only copy the OTHER half (after another fresh format) and again see if it slows down. If it slows down both times, then I don't know where to go from there unless you really feel like breaking it down further, like into quarters.
If only one of the two halves causes the phone to slow down, further cut that half into two, and only try one of those quarters at a time and test again. Time consuming, but all depends on how much you want to know and how much impact it makes on you.

SPB Shell 3D now out - anyone getting it?

So it finally came out and it looks fantastic. But it's carrying a pretty steep price tag at $15. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.spb.shell3d&feature=search_result
I'm curious:
1) Is anyone getting this?
2) Does it actually work with the XT720?
Am curious too!! I wouldn't mind shelling those dollars if it actually works on my device. Cause it looks damn neat and promising.
However they should give a list of devices which are supported and yet to be supported.
I still dint go for it cause I don't know if it is compatible with Dell Streak 5.
peace out!
SAM
Had a chance to try it out with the 15 minute window refund. Works fine on XT720. Pretty cool and smooth, but I don't know if I'm actually going to purchase it.
i don't like it
is too WM6 like
I also think this is a cool homescreen. But does anyone know how much this thing drains the battery?

Mine didn't load until I tried like twice I think. Then again it could be an issue with the rom - lots of people seem to be complaining about it working and then no longer working once they switched roms. I'm not using Khal's atm and I'm not even considering buying it until I use the ROM and I see SPB works with it.

I think Khal's minfree parameters are probably too strict. I got those random program deaths when I was trying really strict levels. Too much free memory can be a bad thing

Well i did remove those settings but still no go???
Phone refuses to load that launcher.... Any ideas?
I was thinkng maby i should mess with the VM Heap size?
If there was a way to get it working with the good ROMs without sacrificing too much, that would be great. It looks good and I know they are already planning to release more widgets (+WM users seem to have a lot of faith in SPB's dev skills and updates) so I'm potentially interested in getting this - if it works.
720 is ok
it is good
This program memory hog not worth the money.

Thanks! I'll probably check out SPB again then once I move to V4.
If anyone needs it for free plz tell me!
It used to work on my stock rom....didn't try it on v4....

The new version works just fine on V4 for me without swap, but it slows the entire phone down so not really ideal for everyday use atm. They'll have to do some more work on RAM consumption I think.

[q] htc evo v 4g

So I purchased the newly released HTC Evo V 4g from Virgin Mobile. The phone boasts a 4gig ROM. Imagine my surprise when I fire the puppy up and there is only 1.1gigs available for my apps. What happened to the other 3+gigs? I can't believe the OS and Sense requires that much space. Is there anyway to reclaim some of that space so I don't have to push so much to my SD card?
cant do it
there is no way for you to reclaim this space its saved for updates and software on phone.
once it's rooted.. that might change.. or some dev will find a trick.. dunno..

There is, but the demand for it is not needed. Maybe as apps get bigger, we'll see an implementation of the method called firerat, firat, or something like that.

If it is possible and does not cause the phone to lose stability, then it must really not be in demand since I have yet to see a ROM that incorporates that.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
It's not ROM integrated. It is a whole separate process which takes place prior to ROM installation.
One day we'll see it. But today is not that day.

[Q] F2FS

I've been hearing a lot about f2fs formatting instead of ext4 and have been looking into doing it myself. I've found a guide that should work if I decide to do it, but I was wondering if anyone has successfully done it on their i605? and what you noticed after doing it (good or bad)
I have tried it several times. Makes things maybe a little smoother. Roms are set to format I'm ext4 still so it's a pain in the butt to upgrade your rom
But if your gonna flash and not upgrade for a while it's worth checking out

Thanks for a quick reply, I may check it out soon then if for nothing more than curiosity, although I hope I would see/feel some benefits
You're welcome. If need run into any problems with it. Just send me a private message. I have used it so much I'm pretty good at it. Just don't expect your phone do be double the speed or anything but it's def a little quicker. Benchmarks don't show any differences in my tests.

Thanks again. Yeah I was expecting it to be kinda the same situation as ART v Dalvik as far as noticing performance increases and whatnot go, because if it were very noticeably superior then I have no idea why anyone would use ext4. Did you use devil kernel/recovery for t0lte?
I was planning on using this guide (with appropriate files, not ones for international variants) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50059850&highlight=f2fs#post50059850 (post 3 I believe) when I decide to take the plunge. Anything stick out as wrong with this method?
Nope that's the best guide for our phone
