Install apps to sd card - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
To start please dont ask me to use the search function
At the moment I am unable to save apps to my SD card, is this possible without rooting the phone?
Anyone know if it will be possible when htc release 2.1?
Also, does copying the apps to the sd card speed up your phone? anyone with custom ROMS, how much internal memory do you have free when running average amount of apps, ?
If i dont restart my phone it hovers around 80mb and starts to lag,

No - Apps2SD isn't currently an official part of Android, and whilst I expect it to come eventually it, it isn't there yet.

No - chances are the flash memory on your phone is quite a bit faster than your SD card. If anything, it may actually make it slower.

Dave

dave, i have to disagree... on most points.

depends on what you mean by "rooting the phone", but you don't need root access to your rom for apps2sd.

it can be implemented the same way as it is now. it was never available in an official update, and probably never will.

probably not. if there is any change at all it might be slower, as the sdcard is probably slower than the internal flash. whether this is measurable and/or noticable, no idea.

ram or internal storage? storage about 80mb free, don't care about ram. this is a linux system, free ram is wasted ram. windows (mobile) bull**** doesn't count here.

so you are probably talking about ram. try to figure out the reason for the lagging.

thank you both for your replys, so what can I do to speed up the phone, do these custom ROMS, like modaco actually run faster,
I watched a video of a comparison between modaco and the stock ROM, and the stock ROM seemed to work quicker which kinda put me of modaco but I have also read rave reviews about modaco, your thoughts ?

Should I A2SD?

Hi i just rooted my phone and installed MCR. Do you think its worth it to do A2SD on my hero? Will it make the apps run faster? Right now i still have 41MB so thats still a little bit to spare. Should i do it?
Personally I wouldn't bother if I were you, unless you are absolutely out of space. It certainly won't make your phone any faster anyway.
Regards,
Dave
ohh ok, i guess i'll do it when i run out of space then. I also only have a class 2 sd card so it isnt that fast.

PROS:
- Full control of your phone
- More apps available in Marketplace
- Remove unwanted apps
- Ability to overclock/underclock
- Tether your cell data (as a wifi hotspot or USB)
- Applications to SD Card (free up memory)
- Overall performance of phone improvement
CONS:

No OTA update once custom ROMS are available but that doesn't matter once rooted because you're gonna want to install custom ROMS created by the DEV anyway.
Well yeah, the reason why i thought i would ever regret it is because im new to this kind of stuff, so once i do it. im not going to know what to do with it. Im a newb i guess lol. Once i do it i cant go back correct?
I've noticed a problem getting protected apps from the android store. On my Rogers X10a since rooting, most things are there but a few things aren't. Hoping to solve it soon, but some apps may not be available.

You can definitely go back to stock anytime you want. For example, I wanted to see the new ota update for rogers so I rebranded my phone back to its original firmware, and updated, now I don't have root but in about 30 minutes I'll have it again. This process can be done unlimited times.
Just a suggestion, before you try rooting it spend an evening or two doing some research and getting familiarized with the tools.
From what you are saying I would suggest waiting until there is something that you really want working on your phone that is limited by the stock rom.

Do you mind directing me to the Link for the original firmware for Rogers. I'm having trouble finding it in these forums. I can only seem to find Decrypted x10a ROMS and I have no idea what those are. I only want it for warranty purposes.

Use the r1f014 in the decrypted roms. That one is stock rogers branded or you can repair your phone with pc companion and it will save a backup to your hard drive. Then if you need to go back to stock you repair with pcc. I didnt check but im willing to bet the new rogers fw will be there too.

Was thinking about doing this but I think the benefit of Root just outweighs being on Stock especially because of the unnecessary cr-APPS that SE installed. For me, I don't use Moxier, Timescape, etc... and they take up so much resources or space that I could use for some of more useful apps. (SetCPU, Titanium Backup, etc).

What kind of tools are you refering to? Just in a general idea so i dont spend a week doing research instead of a day or two lol.
And just a general question, if debranding a phone is a good thing to do... is there a reason why Ericsson didnt do it in the first place? Excuse my incompetence with rooting.

I think the only con is the root access increase the security treat, just like the jailbreak iPhone.
Other than this, root is great, and useful

[Q]Phone Cleaning Software

Hi guys..
Is there any good & safe junk file or system cleaner available???Like the one below..

Is the above is good & safe for the purpose???Plzzz suggest which one u think is the best for the purpose..Thanxx in advance
Check CacheMate as well. The trouble with both of these is that the functionality of the free versions is quite a bit crippled compared to the paid versions.

Frankly I have about zero use for SD cleaning. Can do it manually. It is the internal memory that matters, plenty of space left on SD.

Question about a ROM

Howzit guys,
I have a HTC Aria the AT&T version. I've rooted my phone and all the jazz. I'm interested in putting this ROM on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588599
What I want to know is how much internal space will be available once the ROM is installed. I currently an running Froyo/w HTC Sense and there just isn't enough internal storage space on the phone.
Regards
There's much more space in non HTC Sense roms I think. If I remember correctly, there's about 118mb free at the start.
Also, you can use S2E to move your dalvik cache to the sd card which will give you an additional 50-100mb depending on your apps.
Where can I get S2E?
You can find s2e on the Google Play store. It uses a partition on your sd card. To create the partition you can use a function in the Rom Manager app, which should have come with the ROM you installed. If not, its also on the Play store. You can also create the partition with Clockwork recovery. It will completely wipe your sd card, so make sure you have a backup of stuff you want to save. The ROM Manager method is a little easier.
Once the partition is setup, s2e will give you the option of loading cache and program files to the sd card partition. When you have it load program files, it automatically loads all existing and new downloaded programs to the sd partition. Even those that usually don't provide that option. In fact, DON'T SET "MOVE TO SD" FOR INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS. While it sounds a little counter-intuitive, it will actually defeat the s2e function. The sd partition actually becomes an extension of your phone's memory. Its a very clever program for phones with limited memory.

I found the app but it's not compatible with my phone and I also saw this
S2E works only with CyanogenMod7 and CyanogenMod9!
I'm not running CyanogenMod

If you are concerned about free space, I'd advise you to install Cyanogenmod and then use S2E. If configured correctly, it will give you as much space for apps as you are willing to dedicate on your SD card. Preferably do that only with a reasonably fast SD card (class 2 is probably too slow).
Sorry if I caused confusion there. Out of all the ROM available for HTC Aria, which do you guys rate as the best and which are you currently using?
I don't wanna go through all the effort of installing and backing-up and it turns out I put a bad ROM on my phone.
I would recommend this ROM by WinSuk. I think it is the most up-to-date CM9 / ICS ROM.

I would recommend CM7.2. even though it's not as up to date as ICS, it's very stable, and no bugs as far as I can tell.

I've always been a Sense-ROM sort of guy for my Aria - tried CM7 a while back, and found the battery life wanting in comparison. But lately, I'm sick of seeing the "not-compatible" message with some of the newer apps on the market...
Is CM7.2 worth a look? It's Android 2.3, correct?
I don't like the list of issues with the camera on CM9, otherwise I would jump on that Winsuk ROM. I use my camera a lot - take pictures of receipts for Evernote, purchase comparisons, barcode scanning, etc. I can't afford to lose any basic camera functionality.

Not trying to advertise or anything here (okay maybe ), but in case you haven't looked at the CM9 thread in awhile, everything works on the camera except video (which used to work, which is strange), and a separate app can be used to take it if needed.
There's also a 2.3 based sense ROM around here somewhere ("Gingersense" I think), but I don't remember if everything works on it..

So what doesn't work, then? FM radio? Watching videos on Youtube?
Also - none of those "Gingersense" ROMs were worth much, as Bluetooth and other functionality would either crash the phone or not work at all. Never a true working phone option...

Everything not working is listed in the thread. Pretty much only one major thing remains - videos use a software decoder instead of hardware, and if videos are too big (say, bigger then the screen's resolution) they play slow. So HQ on YouTube is mostly unwatchable, but LQ plays fine
There's also a bug/memory leak in the decoder, and if it goes too long the system will run out of memory & reboot (this bug is fixed in Jellybean/CM10 though)
FM radio works with Spirit FM
I should note that battery life probably won't be as good though (kind of expected with all the new stuff I think)
You can always try it and revert back if you don't like it
I read through the thread - it sounds more like a testing ROM than an everyday ROM still, at least for how I would use it.
I might take the leap to CM7.2 again though, and hope I can manage the battery better.
Ok so I really need to put a new ROM on now cause my phones internal storage is so low I can't even open my Gallery anymore. I've been looking at CM7 or CM9 but there's so many different version on each, how do I know which is the most stable for everyday use?
