Hi guys. I have a problem. I do not want a data plan and do not use any data, but At&t keeps on signing me up for a data plan. Is there any way to stop this? I have data disabled on my phone, so it only runs on wifi, but they still sign me up for a data plan and I have to call them every time and yell at them to cancel it. and they sign me up for the really expensive one too, like the 45 $ one. Is there any way to stop them? What can I tell them so they can stop? Please help. I will press the Thank button for anyone who helps.
AT&T requires every smart phone to have a data plan. I use their cheapest one, which is $15 a month for 200MBytes. They definitely shouldn't be signing you up for anything more than that. If they did, I'd call them and complain.
I wonder if they got rid of your data plan, but you were charged $45 because you had no data plan. Each MByte of data transferred to your phone would be extremely expensive. My little sister recently got a phone (not a smartphone) and she wasn't aware that she couldn't use data. There ended up being a $290 bill that month.
I'm sure someone else can comment who is more familiar with how AT&T works.

If you have an AT&T SIM card inside a smartphone, you are required to have a data plan whether you use data or not, regardless of whether you are on contract. That means a minimum $15/mo for the 200 MB plan. The only reason they are letting you cancel the data plan when you call in is because they are assuming you will switch the SIM to a regular phone.
Just to be clear, I believe you meant $15/month for 200Mbytes, not 2GBytes.

Right, my bad. :O
Thanks Guys. So should I take out the Simcard so they don't sign me up for another one again? I was using a iPhone 4 without a data plan but they didn't say anything about that.

If you take out your sim your phone will no longer be a phone. You need it for calls and sms.
Sent from my cm7 Aria.
The reason I want to take out the simcard is because my parents will be so pissed off if they have to pay extra, even if it is only 15$.

Yes, you can put the SIM card into a regular (i.e., non-smart) phone and you won't be forced into a data plan.

The same policy applies to iPhones, so it probably was just a matter of time before you would be "caught" and forced into a data plan.

Pulling the sim won't do you any good unless, like drumist suggested, you're you're going to put it into a non-smart phone. Otherwise you won't have a phone. What you could actually do is just buy a prepaid phone and putting in your sim. Then you could use the aria for wifi, taking pictures, playing games, and listening to music. All things you can do without a sim card.
Sent from my cm7 Aria.
Ok, I am just going to do the prepaid method. Thanks for the response guys.
I am on AT&T with the Aria and I do not have a data plan at all. I'm probably the exception though, as I haven't had any data for about 4 years with previous smart phones either (2 different Blackberry phones).

There is another way around it is buy a Tmobile unlock phone then ATT wont know what kind the phone it is. Even ATT keep the ESN in their data...... so when you make a phone call, the phone send signal to closet tower and every time it does, ATT know because every phone have a unique ID, if the it is match with their database they knew what phone you have. However if you have Tmobile phone they can't verified it.

Yes, that is a good idea. I am going to try and buy a Cliq II unlocked.
Samsung Vibrant is 3G compatible withsd ATT incase you change your mind about internet in the feature, downside is no LED flash.
hey guys, I'm gonna be visiting France for a month (I'm from the usa) so what's I'm wondering is what I can do for phone/data over there? what options does someone visiting for a month have? I know the airport will sell you a $.01/KB dataplan, that'll rape you after 5 minutes of web browsing.. are there any real options available in France?
I'm just looking for a sim

Of course! Look for O2 or Orange. I believe both offer pre-paid SIMs with 500MB of data for only about $13(USD or ~10€). There will be loads of pre-paid plans to choose from, although they might charge 10€ for the SIM. If 500MBs not enough, you can always top it up (recharge or reload your plan). You can get them in almost any kiosk in any commercial district anywhere. It probably won't be enough to tether, and Skype home with video everyday but it should be plenty to check email/FB/XDA. Hell, it might even be enough to Skype a few times per week. Basically, the $.01/KB is a joke...steer clear, but you won't have a problem finding a reasonable prepay when you get to a major city.
What's your normal monthly data consumption like?

thanks so much for the info
I want to be as minimal as possible on the trip, so I plan to only use data for Google maps, and maybe looking up hostels. I will do a little bit of phone calling, to a friend ill be staying with (very very little, only if we get separated), and probably no texting.
is there roaming in France?

Yes there is roamimg in france.
Just avoid Orange and SFR, as they just are real crooks.
Try this : http://www.free.fr/adsl/index.html
They just started yesterday as the third national provider, and they really are cheaper. Do not hesitate, go FREE.

No problem. There is roaming, but if you're staying in city centers it shouldn't be a problem. I have an SGS2 as well, just set it to not use data on the roam. If you buy an app called "GrooveIP" (I think it's like $3 or sth) you'll be able to make calls over your gVoice account via wifi or data, if you have one. I've been living in Germany for about 4 years (until a few months back, now I'm in the UK) and I still have a US landline so I can call mom in FL and sis in OR. You might also check for "What's App". It lets you send SMSs over the internet. So you'll be able to text back home for almost nothing.
hi everyone
with this application you can send sms to anybody 100% free and without any limits!
try it!
not trying to be rude but a little description of the app would be nice because saying its for free with little info seems fishy.

Its not free because you still need to use 3g or wifi to send sms. 3g means you need data subscription and wifi you will need internet connection. So still need to pay for it. Not worth i guess

Its free in the sense of the sms , if you pay a fee to your data carrier what does that got to do with anything ?!
Its like saying websites cost money because you need to pay to your Internet supplier (ISP)..
Don't be ridiculous
Have fun !!!!!!!!

websites do cost money. indirectly your paying just by going to their sites with their ads.
Does that mean wherever I go and see ads, I'm paying money? Streets have ads!! Ads everywhere!! I just ignore them and wish to destroy them all. They are visual pollution. People tolerate them when they offer something free which their own customers pay for.

The corporate ATT store yesterday said it would cost upwards of $30 or so a month to add it to my plan. I don't have mobile share. Anyone get them to add it to your unlimited plan...and for how much?

I am waiting this out as well, I have a grandfathered data plan too.
I Went to at&t today and they were really busy, but i wanted to try on the watch and take a closer look at the nano sim slot.
I am thinking about buying it outright, and then swap the sim from my phone when I want to leave it at home. I know I will need an adapter for my phone's sim and it's may not be ideal, but it's better than paying a monthly fee.

Thanks. That was the lowest priced data plan I could get. Can someone remind if phone setting can be done and stay without using the gear manager. Going to link it to my phone once the watch is fully charged.
Edit: Did some setup and changed some settings. Cannot download new apps maybe I am missing something on my phone? Also need to look up the connection modes and how to set up for independent operations of the watch.

interesting, the best deal they would offer me was a 30/mo add on smartphone plan if I wanted to keep my unlimited. Honestly though I am super happy that they didn't offer me a better option. I paid less for the uncontracted ATT and the H20 PAYG plan is more than enough given that I nearly always have my phone.
I did have to make a bunch of calls over a week to get the information needed to at least convince the VZW employees not to mess with my phone's unlimited data. Better I delayed purchasing it to get a satisfactory deal.
Started changing settings and checking things out. How do I get the automatic brightness to keep the display so all of the text can be read?
