Its not free because you still need to use 3g or wifi to send sms. 3g means you need data subscription and wifi you will need internet connection. So still need to pay for it. Not worth i guess

Its free in the sense of the sms , if you pay a fee to your data carrier what does that got to do with anything ?!
Its like saying websites cost money because you need to pay to your Internet supplier (ISP)..
Don't be ridiculous
Have fun !!!!!!!!

websites do cost money. indirectly your paying just by going to their sites with their ads.
Does that mean wherever I go and see ads, I'm paying money? Streets have ads!! Ads everywhere!! I just ignore them and wish to destroy them all. They are visual pollution. People tolerate them when they offer something free which their own customers pay for.

Your best bet would to use your wifi connection and use a chat program... Parlingo is pretty decent, and Mundu IM is okay if you're down to pay the (i think) $15 bux.
If there was something that would let me go full blown SMS without service I wouldn't blow 20 bux a month on my prepaid hehe.
thanks a lot , but u only paid $15 once rite?
Anybody else have this problem? Recently, my phone stopped showing the City and State of incoming and outgoing calls. It was a very minor feature, but it was nice to know who was calling me from where since everybody in college has a different area code than mine.
i belive that was your trial of "city ID" program, preloaded onto your phone by AT&T.
city ID is a pay service..

cityID was a 2-week trial. You should've gotten popups notifying you of that fact.
I never noticed this on my GS II, but I didn't run stock for long.
Now that you mention it though, that was one of my initial observations after having the iPhone, you saw city and state for incoming calls.

My phone is 3 weeks old and it's still showing City/State and no sign of a popup. Maybe they made the trial longer?
If you reflashed to a new ROM it probably reset the counter.

Yepp you should definitely try TrueCaller. It's a free global caller ID with city ID aswell.
You can get the APK from truecaller.com from your phones browser
I quickly switched to a free app to do that job. I'm using Mr. Number at the moment. I have no complaints with it. When a new number calls me, the app checks everyone else's contact list to come up with the caller's name. when my dentist called, the name that someone else used on their contact list showed up in the notification.

I'd be really worried if that's the case. Check your AT&T bill carefully. You may accidentally accepted the subscription and start paying for the service with a monthly fee.

It seems as its not free, just a 7-day trial then you pay $6.99 one time fee to continue using it for certain countries (US is one of them)
Here is a snippet fromtheir terms of use page
Users in the following countries will need to purchase the application for continued use after the 7-days trial period is over:
Canada Denmark Italy Norway Sweden United States Austria
Users in other countries will until further notice be able to use the application 100% FREE OF CHARGE (except for any data traffic costs from your operator). A user license to TrueCaller costs $6,99 (ONE TIME FEE) and entitles the holder a non-transferable, non-exclusive and unlimited term right to use the application on the device downloaded to without any further subscription fee, or any other purchases needed.

I jinxed it! I got the phone on the 6th but TODAY the CityID popup appeared. So maybe it's a 22 day trial. ;-) Anyway, certainly wasn't 2 weeks, at least not here. I made sure to click NO.
I actually went ahead and signed up for it. $2/month and now I know who the hell is calling. I know overall the TrueCall thing would be cheaper, but its integration on the calling screen just isn't as slick.
Also, I used a jig after I rooted, so I got like a full month for free!

* it only pops up when you receive a call.
* if you ignore or press cancel or back button, it will go on in trial mode for a few more days.
Mine poped up on the first call on the day 14.
I thought of that but I looked and I'd taken numerous calls over the last few days.
Hmmm....does the trial begin when the phone is first put into service or when the first incoming call is accepted? That's it -- looking back I didn't answer my first call until 10/14. All the rest I let go to VM.
Mystery solved, 14 days it is.

Hi guys just wanted to let you know I found a way to get a working free mobile hotspot from Big Red using the same method as the Bionic's (thanx to who ever found this). Anyway I made a quick video for the the Razr. As for those wondering about Big Red watching you, I used 43 gb last month and 32 gb so far this month Also here's an article from XDA about throttling legalities on 4g networks. Can't say for sure, I'm no lawyer but it looks legit.
Worked perfectly. Thanks!
Your account can be flagged, and Verizon can either sue you for illegally using (read: stealing) their services, throttle you permanently, or just be nice and just tack on the tethering price to your monthly bill without telling you.
This is illegal, don't do it.
looks like you copied zedomax post man...
i am 1addictsad78 and i just found a way to resolve to endless loop by changing the MTU

So, we should stay away from this procedure???

This is NOT illegal, in my mind, if you have payed for a certain amount of data. You are not stealing their services because hot spotting is NOT their service. It is a a feature built into your phone that they blocked so they could charge you extra. Period. Even if this was illegal, you can always root and install a tethering app. At that point, I'd like to see them explain why this is still a service provided by then.

You are probably correct. I changed the setting back after testing because I don't need any legal issues (or an increase in my bill), but for people who don't care or think they won't get caught, the procedure at least appears sound...
i have a massive data when i started using the thunderbolt with open garden tether. I'm a netflix guy and use as a modem to my apartment for over 6months and never get flagged. now i have the droid razr doing this Verizon hotspot too.
grandfathered rules!
It's not a matter of legality. It's not illegal.
It's a matter of ethics. Are you willing to break the Terms of Service that you signed agreement with when you bought the service? And are you willing to deal with Verizon's reaction when they find out? If they add a tether charge to your account, you earned it.
@ x2breakoffate, you have paid for unlimited phone data. You have not paid for ANY tether data. They sold it to you with the data blocked. If you didn't like that you should not have bought a phone that was crippled.
What you offered is a lame attempt to make yourself feel better, not a justification.
If any of you would read the full post and the associated links, you would know about the Block C provision. I've used it for a couple months on the Bionic and had no problems.
@ ad78.....I'm sorry it wasn't clearly stated that this was not my own work and I copied it from the Bionic

@ everyone else: Stated I am no lawyer but I can say for those like me on the UNLIMITED DATA PLAN, yes I think it's BS that they lock down the devices and limit tethering to a usb. As posted earlier http://goo.gl/cL3L1 it is illegal under Block C to limit or throttle 4g devices.
You can throttle Block C devices for reasonable network management reasons (you using a 100 GB of data per month and therefore causing data congestion is one of those reasons).
And yes, it is illegal to use a paid service without paying for it.
I could tap into DirectTV's cable service and use it for free somehow, or get channels that I'm not paying for...is it simply a moral dilemma because they lock it down "simply because they want to charge me money" for them?
Terms of use aren't just a wall of text there because they want to put it there, it's a legally binding document that you AGREED to (which is the equivalent of signing). They CAN sue you for "pirating" their officially branded tethering service on their network. That's what you're doing. You're disabling the check in THEIR software to make sure you have the tethering plan, and you're using THEIR officially branded service, through THEM, without paying THEM. That is illegal.
The only difference between this and pirating a version of Microsoft Office and disabling the serial check is the fact that it's more easily monitored since all of the stolen data you're sending is going through their servers, possibly with something attached that tells Verizon that you're tethering.

There is no difference to phone data and tether data.
It's all just information sent by the TCP-IP protocol.
It is like buying a book, but you are only allowed to read it outside because you have not payed for the ability to read it by artificial light.
Its still stealing bottom line. If you can afford a smartphone you should be able to afford internet at home or just pay extra for a tethering plan.

But in order for this to not count towards you're data is if you're on the grandfather plan and rooted right? Cuz if ur on a 4gb plan then you're data would count correct?

With a net income of over 3 billion, I don't think it hurts them that much from the very few root user users and even fewer heavy 4g users.

Right, let's just all steal food from Walmart, it's a multi-billion dollar retail chain, it won't hurt much.
Honestly, if you're going to tether, at least use a 3rd party app. Using their software to steal free service is like peeing on a cop car and expecting to get away with it.

Choose from celebrity, funny/annoying or TV/movies. There are lots of soundbites to listen to but the app handles all that for you so you do not have to pick them, they are random with each call. Get five free tokens everyday.

Thanks. That was the lowest priced data plan I could get. Can someone remind if phone setting can be done and stay without using the gear manager. Going to link it to my phone once the watch is fully charged.
Edit: Did some setup and changed some settings. Cannot download new apps maybe I am missing something on my phone? Also need to look up the connection modes and how to set up for independent operations of the watch.

interesting, the best deal they would offer me was a 30/mo add on smartphone plan if I wanted to keep my unlimited. Honestly though I am super happy that they didn't offer me a better option. I paid less for the uncontracted ATT and the H20 PAYG plan is more than enough given that I nearly always have my phone.
I did have to make a bunch of calls over a week to get the information needed to at least convince the VZW employees not to mess with my phone's unlimited data. Better I delayed purchasing it to get a satisfactory deal.
Started changing settings and checking things out. How do I get the automatic brightness to keep the display so all of the text can be read?
