Which ROM to install? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I recently acquired a HTC Hero from Malaysia and its ROM version is 2.73.728.5 which I assume is the South East Asia release.
The problem with that ROM is that it doesn't have the Marketplace app and has support for Chinese characters (which I don't need).
I would like to install an English language ROM (with all the latest features, patches, fixes) which also has the Marketplace app.
Can anyone suggest a ROM which I should install?
Thanks in advance.

I believe Modaco's custom ROM is very good.
Or you could install the latest official World Wide RUU. You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622

OK, is there any simple to follow instructions about installing the MoDaCo ROM from a Linux machine?
Also, what are these "radio" files that I hear about? Why should I install one of those?

No. You cant flash without first flashing recovery. Madaco Roms are not RUU but rooted roms as update zip.
If you want to go root way please read stickies.

im no expert, so dont quote me on this, but from my understanding, and what apple was doing and just about everyother device ive had that had software updates (ps3,psp) when u do the stock rom update it will install over the rom and you will lose your custom rom.
If you switch from the stock rom to a custom rom, you will NOT receive official firmware updates anymore... so as long as you don't go and download a stock rom and install it manually, your phone will continue to run the custom rom until you update / change it...

Most likely a dev will go ahead and release a flashable version of any updates so you can still effectively get updates despite not being stock.

Switching from Chinese(multilanguage) to Indian ROM

Have X822 with 5.8.018s(Stable) multilanguage ROM. Want to move to Indian 19s ROM. Do I just download the 19s file and rename to update.zip and move to the root of the phone's storage and flash? No root!

Thank you.
But I'm not sure if it is official ROM because sometimes online stores install something they call shop ROM and this might break the phone, right?
Is there a way to say if this is the official ROM or not?

I think that if you want to install a stock rom you can do it always without root and custom recovery

I'm not really sure though, I asked on another post and someone said that switching between ROMS is quite easy if it is the official ROM. But I'm not sure about how to find if the ROM that the seller installed is Official or not. It probably isn't and this is where my question is. What if I place the update.zip file and go to recovery and update, but it bricks the phone? Can it be recovered at all?

At least the recovery doesn't install the rom
I should try it, or better unlock the phone and install twrp and do everything you want

You didn't have an official rom but just a rom from a Chinese store, try mokee or Cm13 or a Miui because I don't think that there is an eui rom with romanian
Installed cuoco92 rom now and Romanian is back (also a lot more languages than in stock rom are available in this version). Not the best translation but ok.

Flashing Custom ROM on Mido

hello, i'm new mido user, i'm using ido too. i wanna try flash custom rom on mido, is it necessary to flash firmware before flash custom ROM, and what's the purpose we flash firmware? bcause in ido, we don't need to flash firmware before flash custom ROM. I'm still looking for the answer of my question, i hope someone can help me to explain it, thanks
Hmm, what do you mean by firmware?
The steps are:
1. Unlock boot loader
2. Install custom recovery (TWRP)
3. Install custom ROM
i've read some threads of custom rom like Candy ROM, and they said we should to flash firmware. that firmware is cm14-mido-firmware-20170430.zip i mean

Oh that. That's only required to flash firmware when you're coming from marshmallow based MIUI only. Otherwise no need.
The thing is if you flash firmware before installing Rom, it's not an issue. You're good to go. You can find latest firmware zips from this (https://forum.xda-developers.com/re.../firmware-firmware-update-2017-08-04-t3651537) thread, huge thanks to @Zile995 for the updates!
