[APP][CAB]FindMyCar - Find your parked car automatically - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

REQUIREMENTS
Devices running Windows Mobile 5 or later (touch screen).
Internal GPS.
Car charger.
Microsoft Compact Framework 3.5
DESCRIPTION
FindMyCar runs in the background and uses the GPS to estimate where you last parked your car.
The GPS is activated mainly when connected to a car charger to eliminate battery drain.
Once FindMyCar succeeded in estimating your car's position, you can click the car icon. A Google map will show up (for that an internet connection is needed). On the map you will see a red balloon indicating your car's location and a blue balloon indicating your current location (if available).
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Your speed is displayed in Windows mobile today screen. (There is a little lag, will try to fix it later).
GPS is kept "hot" when connected to the car charger - meaning that you get immediate fix when launching navigation software or any other software that uses the GPS.
You can now see the time that has elapsed since you last parked.
INSTALLATION PROCESS
Install FindMyCar cab file to the device memory (not to storage card).
Run FindMyCar from the programs list.
BRIEF USER GUIDE
To find where you last parked your car, click on FindMyCar Today Screen item, or on FindMyCar task bar icon at the bottom of the screen. A FindMyCar window will appear. Click on the FindMyCar car icon (in the middle). Your car's location (red balloon) and your location (blue balloon - if GPS signal is available) will appear on a Google map.
Click the ‘X’ icon to bring FindMyCar back to the background.
You may kill FindMyCar temporarily (till next device reset) by clicking "kill" in the settings window. You can remove it totally simply by uninstalling the application.
FindMyCar uses a virtual GPS port meaning that other applications can access the GPS at the same time, however there might be older navigation software that do not work in this mode. You can try to do a GPS port re-search in your navigation software or kill FindMyCar

Never really understood the point of these FindMyCar apps... I mean, they're neat and all, but who the hell can't remember where they parked!?

Folks who've been clubbing and had a 1 night stand and the next morning need to get the hell out of there ASAP? Alcohol impairs judgement and memory.

Hello,
I'm trying to use your nice app, but I'm not sure to do it the right way ...
Fact is that I'm using MobileShell : no today page, and no task bar ...
So I'm wondering how I'm supposed to "bring back" Findmycar UI ... ?
When I click on Findmycar icon, nothing happens.
Application don't show in MS task list, but using a task explorer, I can see a FindMyCar.exe running ...
Thanks if you can light my way ...

Hi TheDwarf!
I can think of two solutions:
1) Use Task manager available under Favorites to select FindMyCar Application (Images 1,2).
Add FindMyCar shortcut on the home screen. When you run the program a second time it will show up in application display (Image 3)
2) Select ShowToday and then you will see the FindMyCar at the bottom right (Images 4,5)
Hope this helps

Isn't exactly working.
The app has no problem finding my location. It however never indicates that it knows where my car is.
info:
htc fuze
leave gps enabled all the time.

doesnt find my car say

You know, I thought of this idea like 3 years ago. It kills me. haha, oh well. I guess I wasn't the only one with the idea. Nice app.

Hi mrxxxsteve, davidrules7778
1) When you are in the car your device should be connected to the car charger, otherwise the GPS won't be turned on and the algorithm will not be able to estimate your car's position. The GPS is turned on only when connected to the car charger to prevent waste of battery power.
2) Please make sure that your car is parked in a place with satellite reception (not in underground parking)
You can find more information in:
http://www.anagog.com/findMyCar/index.html
And the FAQ page:
http://www.anagog.com/findMyCar/faq.html
Please let me know if it works for you

I just "discovered" this app, and I am having the exact same problem as shown in the pic by davidrules7778. FindMyCar indicates that My Location is Available, but also indicates that it doesn't know where my car is located.
Am I correct in believing that FindMyCar records/tags/marks the location of my car as per the GPS location at the time my phone switches from charger to battery? If FindMyCar can't detect this power source change, it will not work for me?

Comm manager and GPS

Now that we have a rom available to enable the internal GPS (much thanks to DCD!) would it be possible to add a GPS enable/disable icon to the HTC Comm Manager?
Or is this even necessary?
from what ive heard... once you shut your phone to standby it closes the gps port. some people claim with no apps running such as google maps or live search that by going to ##debug#... it still shows their gps location. If i had a bet and we made a button that did that, all it would do is disable the LOCATION ON setting in your phone settings. Then when you want to turn it on.. you would turn that back to location on
i havent played with commmanagers much, but assuming we can point a button at a mortscript, theres already quite a few gps startup morts floating around. im sure we could modify the start script to be a toggle.. let me look around
edit: check out talynone's thread here and see if any of the launcher-type apps he linked might give us a start. the real project is coming up with what you want to call your gps toggle, i think sticking that in the commmanager will be easy at that point.
Thanks guys,
Really there isn't anything to shut off technically...it's not like shutting off Bluetooth transmitter which drains battery power...
But a toggle to switch bet location on and "911 only" would be helpful for those who have friend tracking apps and don't want to be located at certain times.
It's really a very low priority to have I must admit, but it would be nice to know I didn't have to dig deep into phone settings to toggle that off.
I'll look around for something that already toggles this for those who have built in GPS stock and WM6, And post whatever I find here.
friend tracking apps?
there are a few of those services like Loopt that will let friends track you via GPS (probably AGPS)....
https://loopt.com/loopt/sess/index.aspx
It's available for Sprint now...
there are also Parental trackers out there for Smartphones but I have never seen one for the PPC yet...
They also use the location on settings in the smartphones which is really the capability we are enabling with the new radio.
So a quick way to turn location on and off seemed like a good idea.

If there isn't anything to turn on or off, then why do I need to run AstroGPSLauncher to get the sats up for TomTom? Or is this just making a connection that already is live and leads TomTom to it?
P.S. I have seen CommManagers with a GPS icon in the past. Maybe even on one of your ROM's dcd.
Well hohnan - It's very different situation than the other things you turn on and off in the Comm Manager...
IE: when you turn off Bluetooth your really turning off the transmitter and shutting down the port (com usually) that the receiver uses to send data it recieves to the device...but the receiver stays on.
The GPS location off feature is similar in the respect that it does not transfer data it receives to the rest of the phone because the com port is shut down. There is no radio transmitter being used at all. I'm willing to bet that they use a single Radio receiver for all the radio signals the unit can see (Cell BT WiFi GPS). So by shutting location to 911 only your GPS is still receiving Sat data and running (cause it can see the sat transmissions) but it simply doesn't send the data anywhere as there is no port to communicate with.
I think the primer app your running is simply initializing the communications between the radio and the phone so that Tom Tom can use it.
I suspect in due time both Tom Tom and Garmin will be more aware of the built in GPS settings of WM6 and negate the need to run something else before it will work.

[APP] Fusion GPS Fix 1.0.1.1 2009/03/13

So here's something to try to deal with the anemic GPS on the Raphael, and any other post-WM5 with slow GPS locking.
This app runs after install, and after soft-reset, and immediately starts up the GPS hardware through the WM5+ GPS API. It waits 5 minutes for a GPS lock, or it quits. A pop-up will tell you whether GPS lock was established or timed out before it quits.
The GPS polling is limited to every 5 seconds to try to conserve some CPU cycles. Currently does not use AGPS, but you can turn it on/off at your registry leisure.
This attempts to reduce the Time-To-First-Fix (TTFF) during which the GPS ephemeris almanac is slowly built up. This can take up to 12.5 minutes for a non-QuickGPS/AGPS accelerated device from a cold-start. By kick-starting immediately after soft-reset, subsequent GPS locks for the next ~6 days (without updating QuickGPS) should be much quicker.
Takes 23K of disk, and 1K of ram.
updates:
1.0.1.1: GPS power kept on until lock or timeout using CABuddy's GPS code framework; states lock time in seconds
1.0.0.5: added much belated icon to app and top-bar
1.0.0.4: switched from pop-up window to wifi notify-style pop-up (457)
1.0.0.3: fix multi-threading issues that caused popup notifications to fail
1.0.0.2: makes sure the app is disconnected from the GPS before the app exits
Will get my raphael tomorrow (O2 Serra) and have heard of and been concerned at the various GPS issues - could you explain this app a bit more ?
Many thanks
so compared to launching say GPS test every morning this would save battery life since its not constantly trying to lock? Sounds like a better alternative...

Raphael, or just the FUZE, has much weaker GPS reception compared to my Kaiser, and will take a lot longer to lock to the GPS signal. FusionGPSFix acts like a GPS app and basically does an automatic cold-start of the GPS after soft-reset which many people have been doing manually.
When the GPS data from the WM5+ GPSAPI says the quality of the GPS signal is GPS or DGPS, then that's when all other GPS apps will get an instant lock.
So FusionGPSFix then quits out, and that's it until next soft-reset, or manual run.
norkoastal: yes, but I'm not sure how long of a period before it needs a kick again. Once I find a pattern, I may try to schedule a run every few hours, or every few hours after you turn on the device.
1.0.0.2
Updated version posted which makes sure the connection to the GPS is shut off before the app exits. I had a strange issue of battery drain that I couldn't trace to a dangling process otherwise today.
Verified GPS operation and shutoff with a Kaiser which has the useful GPS blinky lights, and with HomeScreen PlusPlus which shows battery drain levels.
Works great with CamerAware Buddy and Navizon.
looks like a great idea, I wonder how it works in practice

How's it working for you? So far now I'm maintaining quick locks that take only a few seconds.
I do activesync multiple times a day so QuickGPS updates very often also.
any plans on making a icon for the app? I was thinkink I could map it to my ptt button or launch from my favored programs list. thanks

I'll try a rusty hand at it for the next update.
Great app.
I just had the problem wit batterydraining.
The last two days I have been happy if my phone could do 6 hours.
I have notised that the program gives a pop-up telling weather or not I has gotten a gps fix... - As I have my phone restarting automatic about 3am, I would like to know if the program disconnect from the gps before this popup shows, so my phone doesnt drain during the night. ;-)

I've had my phone unplugged overnight and didn't notice any abnormal battery drain with the latest 1.0.0.2 version (90% -> 70% batt).
It doesn't disconnect from the GPS until the pop-up, so I'll add something smarter to either keep it running for the full 5 minutes even if you power-off the device, or suspend it when your device does power off.
sounds like a good app. will give it a try on my touch pro.
sometimes i have a long TTFF so will try this.

I also update quickGPS very often.
Also I read people here talk about a pop-up... I never got any pop-up.
Thanks a bunch.

And then Dave points me to this.
I'll be doing loads of resets to check this baby and the difference it makes.
Thanks again Looks like a life saver.

Hey, so found some multi-threaded synchronization errors that caused the pop-up dialogs to fail.
New fixed version posted. Thanks for the pointing this out! Still working on a fancy icon, and I'll probably migrate the pop-up to use the native Notification framework instead.
Thanks - but to be honest I hate the pop-up...
I would prefer some kind of system notification that doesn't get in the way - but I suspect it would make the program larger...
So far I haven't noticed a difference. What is the correct way to use? Make sure to make a soft-reset in the open air?

Almost done with the Today screen pop-up that works like alarms and reminders.
The usage is basically just use your device as normal, and soft-resets will try to kick-start GPS settings. Otherwise, run the shortcut, or the app, directly if you don't want to soft-reset. I'm finishing up an icon so the whole thing can be installed like a normal app to make this look nicer.
That would be great.
Waiting for it.

Newbie questions

Hello,
I'm a s740 proud new owner. I've been playing with this gadget for the past few days and I must say I'm very satisfied. Apart from some problems (battery, small call buttons) the phone is really great. However I have some questions that I'd like to know.
1) Are there any power management tweaks you use. Apart from the options in the phone do you do anything else in order to save battery?
2) How customizable is the home screen? What can I change from it? For example the Internet Explorer bar or adding other menus.
3) Is there any way to have "shortcuts" for apps ? Example "new sms" or for any other app. Going through the programs menu is tiresome.
4) Is there any option to restart the phone? No reset, just restart, without having to turn it off and on again manually.
5) Do you use the in-built calendar or did you add other apps for dates etc.
6) Can I "lock" the data connection? I usually use Wi-Fi or Internet throught the USB. Some programs (e.g. Messenger or browser) turn on the data connection without me knowing. Is there any way I can avoid this?
7) Do you use voice tags for apps and contacts? Is it satisfactory?
And last (but very important for me):
8) Which app do you use for mp3 and audio? The Audio Manager, WMP or any other app? Which do you think is the best. The wired headset has only "volume up and down" function? Not anything else? Are there other headsets that are compatible and if so can you control the audio apps without having to use the phone?
I know it's much, but any answer(s) would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot

1) Try turning off 3G/HSDPA (unless you need it)
2) Search for CHomeConfigurator
3) Yes there are. You can even put them on the home screen (again, CHomeConfigurator is the easiest method)
4) There is, but I forgot how to do that.
5) I use the inbuilt one because it can switch the phone to silent automatically during meetings
6) Yes you can. Try searching Modaco NoData
7) Nope, don't use it. I find the automatic search for contacts efficient enough (e.g. you want to call dad, just punch in 3-2-3 and it should be right there. Even works if you are looking for the phone number, etc.)
8) I use PocketPlayer together with an AD2P bluetooth headset (Jabra BT3030). Works quite well; skip, back, play, pause, pick up call and vol up/down work with this.
Hope that helps,

1) I find 3G is fine for stand-by but uses more battery for talking, so it depends how you use your phone. However, its best to select the right bands for your country/region. this is in settings->phone->band select. Also make sure the key-lock is on. Settings -> key lock
2) yeah, chrome. Not full control as no HardSPL unfortunately
3) ..
4) you can try a free app that can reset, look on freewareppc for something like this:

5) have a look at handango. agenda one and pocket informant are good examples:

6) not sure if this still works:

Thanks guys, you are really great.
Chrome seems a bit difficult for me, but I see there is a lot of feedback for it in this forum, so I'll give it a try.
Modaco NoData works fine until now. Although I had to disable "GPRS" "Internet" and "MMS" because if I let MMS enabled then Skyfire would open a data connection. That means I won't be receiving any MMS at all?
I'll check the players. Are there any "wired" headsets that also have buttons for "play, next, etc"?
Is there a compatibility issue with bluetooth stereo headsets or I can buy anything I want? (Although bluetooth consumes a lot of battery and I think I'd prefer a wired set).
Thanks again for your feedback

i like the std menu
its a question of remembering the numbers on wm sp
for example, lock keyboard is top button->2
just as fast as, say, nokia, left smart->*

Numbers are great - nevertheless, it this case hold End Call button is much faster and convenient, IMHO...
Yeah, I use the hold end key too.
The power key is way to up and I'm lazy.
Standard menu is good, however I needed shortcuts to some applications and I made them (for example MP3 player, FM Radio, Resco etc) in a new panel. But there are some problems with the icons. I saw other s740 users complaining about that in the CHome topics and I was curious if someone has made it work.

Well, one possibility is to extract the icon from the corresponding exe (use xn resource editor for example). Me for one, I just use the speed dial function. e.g. press and hold 5 on home screen brings up resco explorer. yes, you'd have to remember a couple of numbers, but i find it faster than flicking through a dozen links in a panel to find the prog i need.
I mostly use the speed dials for contacts.
However I found a solution for the problem (not a full solution) with CHome. To whoever might be interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3945973&postcount=28
Solution for the Icon Panels and semi-solution for pictures.
I have a couple of other questions.
First of all in the "Call History" I only see the numbers or the contacts of my phone calls. However there is neither the time, nor the date, something I find annoying. Is there a solution ?
Second, I will buy another stereo headset for listening to music. I noticed that when I have bluetooth turned on the battery lasts less. Would a bluetooth stereo headset be very power consuming? Has anyone used one? Should I buy a regular headset like the one from colonel's link above?
And also, are the HTC headsets good or should I check out other brands too?
In Call History, select a contact and click the centre navigational button to bring up a list of calls for that contact.
Regarding the locking of S740 keypad via invoking the power button and pressing 2, the quicklist process is actually running as a result. Not much of a problem, but you may wanna reduce the no. of processes running on the phone.
Thanks, not the best thing but surely something of a solution.
I discovered a problem the past few days. The clock has changed time twice. Any idea ?
It changed both time zone and time (showing a random, wrong time even for the new time zone). Has anyone experienced something like that ?

I've experienced this once, but with a Nokia.
My phone clock was set on automatic and it changed several times during a few days. I expect the cause was the phonecompany.
AVE...
I'm using stereo headset from Samsung, and I have Bluetooth active all the time. Didn't made a big difference for me. But whatever I tried I still wasn't able to make Pocket Player compatible with control buttons on my headset...
CHome Configurator didn't worked well for me. In fact it didn't worked at all...
For now I'm playing around with voice commands...These are great for launching apps...
BTW, I had to disable HDSPA, since it turned on to transfer data without asking me for permission, and my operator has a lot bigger fees for HDSPA, than for GPRS...
Any idea about the MMS receiving size? Although there is an option for changing the MMS size for the ones you send (from 100k to 300k), I didnt find anything for incoming MMS. I already have some MMS which I cannot use because it tells me that the exceed the receiving size I have set. Any idea about that?
Is there any way that when I use Windows Live Messenger the stupid thing doesnt transfer all my MSN contacts to my contacts? I don't need that. The sync options in Windows Live are greyed out and I can't change them
Edit: I found the solution for Messenger here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513643
However in the process I lost all my Messenger contacts from my PC, which I saved by the trick mentioned in the topic above
MMS: It's simple - limits are set by operator. Check settings as declared by definitions of your tariff/custom settings.
Will do, although as I said I changed my limit to 300k for sending while it seems I cannot accept larger than 100k files.
I'll check it out and see.
These are logically two diferent variables. What want to send is your choice per case. What your phone will receive directly, you have to pay for amount of data. And you have no other control as the limit. Therefore default settings for reception are rather conservative.
Something else, is there any way to change the "low battery" notification? It is on 20% and I would like to lower that because I think 20% is way too high.

Any way to find out why my location icon is always 'broadcasting'?

So I understand that the GPS icon is always going to be on in ICS (super useful design), but i've noticed this morning that mine is also constantly in the transmitting state, ie: (+) ) ) ). I can't figure out why, since I don't have any apps that should be using GPS on right now. It didn't start off this way, and I haven't installed anything.
I'm just concerned that it's draining battery.
I've got my GPS enabled all the time, but the icon only shows up when it's actively in use. might be a deeper problem.
Check Facebook and any weather Widgets you gave set to use current location.

Nope. already had location disabled on those.
its because you have location services enabled. Once you turn all of those off it will no longer broadcast
Right, sort of. On every other phone I've seen, just having them enabled but not currently used results in just the GPS (location icon), which looks like a crosshair: (+), and then if something, like a navigation program or facebook is using your location service, it turns into (+) ) ) ) --crosshair with waves coming out of it.
Mine's always in the latter state, even when I go to task manager and make sure there's nothing that SHOULD be using it ...

On the SGS3 as well as the SGS2, the crosshair icon was only on if GPS was active (i.e. navigation was on or Facebook or something else actively using the GPS) I ALWAYS had mine enabled, so that when I needed it active, I would not need to perform an unnecessary step. Sounds to me like you have either an app that is causing it to remain active all the time, or there is something wrong with your phone.
I have the same issue, it shows that the GPS is constantly in use (not just the E911 service). Any thoughts on why that is?
Are you on Verizon?

yes I'm on verizion. It goes away when i turn off location services, but I was wondering if i'll lose battery if those services are on

Running Apps Revisited

Guys,
Lot of talk regarding battery life/ standalone/ accuracy of gear S apps for running.
Used both Nike and S Health- to me both were standalone.
Few bullets
1) some stated that even with GPS on and locked that s health still uses pedometer for distance? (is this true?)
2) I'm still confused if I need gear network AND/OR mobile network on/off - does this affect battery life- if I leave OFF all networks...will my run sync once I turn mobile network or Bt with phone on?
3) any way to get splits read to you (cannot believe this is missing)
4) I don't think this device will get through a marathon unfortunately
Yikes! Just did the car test (run shealth with hand out car) and I can confirm that it doesn't use gps for anything other than map. Feel duped
Relies on pedometer I think
Sorry for my blast posts. It is possible that it only records speeds in running range? I shook hands and didn't increase speed. Also noticed a bike option. Perhaps wrong about duped. Lol
Hello Jeffruby,
I've been in contact with Samsung about S-Health on Gear S and they confirmed that they are not measure the distance with the GPS, just the map (Totally insane!)
The Nike+ app is tracking the distance correctly with GPS though. If you have everything turned on (GPS, GSM, Bluetooth), then you would get probably about 4-5h of battery time. My goal is to use it on the next marathon and be able to listen on music for the last 60min of the race but i guess I need to run on 3:30 or something to make this possible
BUT, unfortunally the Nike+ app are missing the most important thing and that's the avg pace for the total run. It just show current pace and I don't really like that since it's changs so often so it's hard to see what speed you are runnig at.
So, yeah, I really hope for an update on either of these running apps ASAP!
HTC, thanks.! What a shame re s health app. How do you think it does distance for biking though if uses pedometer for distance?
The Nike app is close to being good..... I can't see the red on black, while your running you can't read scrolling info and of course the avg pace of run is the gold
Also in Nike app you have to turn on GPS manually, not from the app, if you want to track distance accurately. If you don't it uses accelerometer. With GPS on in general battery life is not good. My longest run was 30K in 2:45 had 18% battery left. Also there is one more strange thing about S health - calorie count maxes out at 1000
OK , so I did another test today - used shealth on bike mode. Stuck arm out car window with GPS on. Kept arm still. It tracked distance completely accurately. This tells me that the s health must indeed use GPS accurately. I think the jog portion only measures speeds in running or walking rates as it did not pass my car test.
The Nike app is a bummer as you can't verify GPS lock before it starts. Also the reasons mentioned prior.
The s health app is easier to read but doesn't show you 1 mile splits on the phone app. This is unacceptable.
Completely agree with the issues mentioned with nike+ Visual gps status before starting, the ability to display the info you want while running, and a always on mode during use would also be handy. Now I have to flick my wrist and wait untill the display goes on. It takes too much time and you're not seeing what's happening before you. A quick glance should be all. Currently i use a gear store app called screen awake for this.
Yeah, i have been logging miles with the Nike ap too. Its not perfect, but it works for me.
I have 79 miles all logged on my Gear S nike ap this year.

Not to mention Nike app wastes battery with hr but doesn't record it.
The S Health app records continuous HR during your run. I'm not sure how the Nike+ app works to record HR data. Is it continuously tracking/recording HR data? Or does it do it intermittently when you activate the display and wait for the information to scroll (on the bottom of the screen) to HR?

In the Nike+ app there's a small round indicator in the upper righthand corner that turns green as soon as there is a GPS lock. Always on mode is great, but it increases battery drain, so I just do the wrist flick.
Jerome, I think he is referring to indicator if Nike gps locked in before you hit start run. No runner wants the first 0.1 mile not to be recorded.

Could it be that the person you talked to had no idea what they were talking about (my usual experience with samsung, sadly)?
I am asking because Gear S tracks distance even with data off. After the run, if i don't see a map, only a track of my steps(*), I think data was off, but I still get the same results. I took mine to Europe with me and still got the distance tracked on my runs, even though the SIM card in it wasn't working. Wouldn't that be a sure indicator that what Sammy told you is incorrect?
(*) when data is on, my tracks are superimposed over a map.

Hello,
I guess I have to answer both Yes and No on that question
I've tried to reinstall, run without data, without simcard, yeah, tons of different test and it's always way off (map is accurate but the distance it shows is totally off). Another poster in this topic also had the same issue but then he told me to test and choose 'cycle' as training mode instead of running, and, when I did that, then S-Health tracks the distance accurate. So, with other words the application have support for tracking distance in that training mode but of some reason it seem to choose to track the distance by counting steps if I choose running/walking as training mode. So, i'm not sure, maybe your device of some reason have this working on all traning modes. I hope so, and, that someone can explain for me hoooooooooooooooooooow to change this
My gear s tracks distance very accurately when I run gps on. However with GPS off using pedometer it overestimated my distance by approx 0.1 per mile. So gps must work. I did discover as mentioned above, that at high speeds need cycle on.
Not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but my Gear S is the US ATT variety.
In my case, I am fairly certain that no maps are used for measuring distance. Maybe I lucked out.
And when I said my distance gets tracked earlier, I meant the tracks you see at the very bottom of the log in S Health, that correctly display where I took turns, looped back, etc. Without data on, there is no actual map behind them, with data on, there usually is (I had a few flukes before.) The pedometer would not know about turns taken, though.
BTW, I had issues getting a GPS lock for a while until I realized that my phone is messed up. Once I started using the Gear S in stand-alone mode, all was good.
