So now that i figured out that my GPS on the TP2 is pretty much fried I'm looking into external bluetooth gps options.
I'm leaning heavily towards this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Holux-M-1200-...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260403463&sr=8-4
Anybody have experience with that one?
I ould probably leave it in my car most of the time, but if key chain was available i would just carry it with me.
Any other suggestions?
I want something detailed not "overview". This one is 32 channel and as far as i read its pretty good
I used their previous model of that size and it was excellent, fast, and long lasting. If you have to go external, you can't go wrong with one of these.

I second this. Holux served me well.
Holux is the way to go....
I have the Holux M1000, and I really like it. The newer Holux models are smaller, and seem like they are just as good. The battery life in my M1000 is amazing, and I can also charge it in the car.
Good luck.
What software are you using in your TP2? I find that TomTom seems to lag more than CoPilot, but I think that might be due to the TP2's GPS set/processing.
+1 Holux, my dad has the small version (M-1000), battery life is pretty nice, locks gps pretty quick also.

Battery Life
My battery life is pretty awesome with either one. I get at least two days, even with relatively heavy use (~1hr of Windows Media Player MP3's going to A2DP headphones per day). If I don't use it much, I could probably get the better part of a week between charges. This is with WM6.1, but I don't remember WM5 being that much different.
Oh, I'm also looking to buy the 1100 mah battery, but one question i need a diferent battery cover (i mean a bigger one, same as the 1900 mAh has)? Because i'm searching for it but i just see people selling batteries without covers so i dont want to buy a battery that wont fit my device !!!
Thanks for the advice.
God bless...
Have the opportunity to share my htc touch pro 2 with a toshiba tg01.
I have heard the battery performance is poor, and is the most important thing is a long music playback..
So, how long can the toshiba?
2 days if very light use, 1 day or less if your making a lot of calls and using wireless etc, there are 3rd party batteries by Mugen that can extend battery life massively
Should you buy a TG01? As a owner of a Tg01, and having just paid to get it unlocked, i think you are better off looking elsewhere, this is because Toshiba offer terrible customer support, zero useful software updates for their products, zero fixes for known issues, terrible battery life, and the fact there are better, albeit more expensive options, like say, the HTC HD2
As a TP2 and TG01 owner I tend to agree.
The TG01 has a beautiful screen and is super-fast, but it has too many flaws to recommend. Poor battery life and terrible in-call quality being the main ones.

for battery life , i expected much worse tbh ... my tg01 holds out only about 10-20% less than my xperia x1* i had despite the double screen and cpu witch really gets stuff done faster so u can put da fone to rest earlier
(*x1 has 1500mah battery , also got a 1800mah cuz it wasnt enuff)
but would i recommend it generally , no i wouldnt , and i wouldnt recommend any winmo phones to anyone unless they already had one in the past and know what kind of bug fest theyre looking into

Well said
Agree no more Toshiba..
Try anything else without TG01: you have Iphone, Htc and a lot of support for them.
But let us not forget the price peoples!
It seems that I'm the only person that would recommend buying the TG01.
In my opinion, you get a good phone for the money you pay (should be around 200 till 250 Euro max.).
You get a phone with a big screen and a good touchscreen (yes I think it's sensitive enough). You get Wi-Fi and GPS.
What more do you want to a price that is that low at the moment?
And if cedesmith suceeds with the project TG01 going to WM6.5.3 then the TG01 will even have less bugs.
In my opinion it's worth a try.
Maybe the battery is a little bit to weak, but for me that's not a problem. The battery remains two days for me...again...enough for me
I only hope, that our TG01 community gets bigger. The phone is worth it.
If you get a good offer, you should buy it I think.
Best regards,
DunkDream

Personally, I would highly recommend the TG01 for the use you appear to be wanting. It has excellent audio performance and with a Mugen 1.1 AH battery will happily last a full day commuting including maybe 3-4 hours use as a music player.
There is a discussion on MoDaCo about the audio side of things here which may be of interest.

After 9 months with it, this device exceeds my expectations. I'm a smartphone user since 2005, (My first one was a primitive Palm Treo 270 and some Windows devices after it) and this is the best device never tested. But you must understand that a Windows device is not easy to manage.(and they never will be if Mr. Gates boys doesn't change it....)
It's true that the TG01 hasstill some unsolved problems, as most of new devices in their first age. It's also true that Toshiba is absolutelly useless in giving support to the TG01
Pros:
-Thickness
-Great screen
-Best device for the money that you pay
-The best Video player never seen . You can play mostly everything on it and with the best benchmark values in the market.
-Great Sound Quality. With SRS Wow it's a dream.
-Host USB!!!!!! You can use USB keyboards, game pads, mouse, bar code, hdu, pen drive, .... Remind: HTC can't do it!!
Cons:
(Design)
-Too small battery
-No separated headphones connector
-You can't charge it and connect USB at the same time
-Stupid SD position. You must disconnect the battery to change it
-No TV Out
(Software)
-Call quality (sometimes)
-Sometimes freezes a bit (as other WM devices)
-Stupid Toshiba's limitations when talking, when battery it's under 20%...
-Still no software for movement sensor
I think that if you have a good opportunity, you must take advantage of it. And if at the end you don't like it, you can always sell it on Ebay for instance.
I wonder if these lines will be useful for you . Tell us about your last decision!
Cheers

Hey thanx.. I get the message that the xperia x10 is aviable in 2 weeks..
TG01 or TP2
Talking from Experience, TP2 is the better phone, my cousin owns the TP2 which I have played around with a lot and I own a TG01.
TP2 is an all in one complete solution.
TG01 is very nice, but HTC Touch Sense Pro is just too good. And unless you know much about Manila, I wouldn't look at a TG01.
Am getting ready to travel overseas for a couple of weeks and have some long flights/train trips ahead of me. I was looking for a power pack that I could take with and keep the g-tab charged and stumbled across this one:
h t t p:/ /w w w.amazon.com/New-Trent-IMP500-External-Blackberry/dp/B0013G8PTS
Everyone seems to like it, but I can't find anyone who has used it with a g-tab, and also, it looks like the connector would fit in the A/C port on the tablet.
Thoughts? Anyone used this?
TIA!

I dont know if it would matter, but the 'Trent iFuel' battery pack linked is a 5000mAh battery vs. the 3650mAh battery in the gtab. Didnt know if that would cause issues. Otherwise looks like a sweet find and I'd also be interested in seeing if anyone has tried this.
From what I can gauge, the capacity doesn't seem to matter (someone mentioned charging their DX 3 times over using it in a review). I'm actually also considering the 11000mAh pack as well, but I'd hate to spend that kind of money to have a paperweight.
looking at the compatibility list, its very unlikely that the pack will output any thing more than 5volts, the GTab requires more than double this voltage to charge.
Thanks, I was wondering if that might be the case. Does anyone have any power packs that have worked for them?
Remember that you cannot take in the plane a suplemental Li-Ion/Polimer battery, only the one included in the device. They say is a risk of fire...

Battery capacity which is what you are referring to does not affect anything. That is just the amount of power the battery holds.

Q. What kinds of batteries are allowed in carry-on baggage (in the aircraft cabin)?
A. Lithium ion batteries (a.k.a.: rechargeable lithium, lithium polymer, LIPO, secondary lithium).
Passengers may carry consumer-sized lithium ion batteries [no more than 8 grams of equivalent lithium content or 100 watt hours (wh) per battery]. This size covers AA, AAA, 9-volt, cell phone, PDA, camera, camcorder, Gameboy, and standard laptop computer batteries.
Passengers can also bring two (2) larger lithium ion batteries (more than 8 grams, up to 25 grams of equivalent lithium content per battery) in their carry-on. This size covers larger extended-life laptop batteries. Most consumer lithium ion batteries are below this size.

Well and it sounds like either way this power pack won't be any good for the g tab.
Anyone have any experiences with this or others?

Anyone have thoughts on how charging would go for the g tab?
The Energizer XP8000 or XP18000 will work with the ViewSonic gTablet when you use the NB06 tip.

If money isn't much of an object, I highly recommend the Energizer XP18000
buy dot com/prod/energizer-external-battery-for-laptops-and-more/q/sellerid/12210431/loc/111/212003408.html
$130-140 is about as cheap as I can find it right now, but I got mine from Woot.com for $89.99 last year. I use it for everything from my Evo, to G-tablet, to laptop, and it's got PLENTY of juice to spare for 2-3 charges of the G-Tablet and can add about 2-3 hours to laptop battery life. It's rated at 18000 mAh which means it should be able to recharge a G-Tablet as many as 5 times, though I've never been gone long enough to attempt that plus I run all my other gadgets off of it. I charge it up before I go on trips and it saves me from having to carry a bunch of power bricks with me. It has lots of tips to change out for just about anything, it comes with a USB port to charge smaller items like a cell phone, and I can vouch that it works with he G-Tablet.
I love my Vibrant and plan on keeping it for a good while to come. I do a lot of biking and like using my phone to track my routes. The Vibrant as we all know has a weak GPS and so-so battery though. I'm thinking of adding another line and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on something that would work well for me.
I need great GPS and looong battery life.
I don't care about the screen or what version of the OS it runs or any of that other stuff as long as it can run something like Runkeeper and has rock solid GPS.
Oh, and I don't want to just get an actual GPS because I like having Data while I ride.
Thanks!

My girlfriend has a myTouch 4G and wouldn't recommend it in the least. The battery life is atrocious.
if you call tmo and complain about the gps not working you can eventually get a warranty replacement. the phone came out last july so you should still be under the one year warranty. there is no cost for it either. i did it with mine and the gps was horrible on my old unit and the new one is absolutely perfect. as long as you don't get an early production unit for a replacement you should be fine. as far as the battery goes just buy an extended battery or even a couple extra regular size ones and you're good to go!
you can also purchase a bluetooth gps reciever and use that while biking, should be easy enough to throw in your camelbak or in the seat pouch n get decent reception (its what i plan on doing when i get my new camelbak). as for battery life if you are looking for something daily use you could get an extended battery but imo that adds too much bulk, instead you can get another oem battery for very cheap.
as to another phone, most the android phones out there with larger screens arent going to have very good battery life, now if all you want is good battery life n gps n dont really care if its android or not you could always get the nuvi fone which is entirely geared towards gps as its made by garmin and asus, but otherwise is not the greatest device.
i know htc devices generally are better for gps, battery not soo much. cant really say about lg or motorolla as i have no experience with their devices.

I have a Holux GPSlim 236 bluetooth GPS receiver that I want to use with my GS2 when I go mountain biking instead of the internal GPS as that would drain the battery too quickly.
I've successfully paired the receiver with the GS2 but none of the apps (Tracker, GPS Test, Maps, etc) actually "see" the external gps receiver and just display no lock and don't show any satellites. Switching on the internal gps receiver makes everything work as expected.
Is there anything special I need to do with the external receiver and pairing it to the GS2? Is there a setting buried in Android somewhere that directs all GPS apps to use an external receiver? On the old WM6 platform you could choose different com ports for the receiver but I see no options in android for that.
Never mind. It appears you need an app (yet again!) to do this. I installed blue4droid and it works now. Why isn't this functionality part of the core Android OS?

Very few people ask for this feature (first time I've seen a request). Your need is very specific, are you sure you will save much battery with a BT-link constantly running?
Older platforms like Symbian S60 and WMP6 supports this quite obviously since this was the only way to get GPS on many older smartphones, but on Android almost all phones have GPS from the beginning.
This seems like good example to me where a dedicated app is better than making the standard Android OS more complicated.
Please remember that more or less every app in the market fulfills purpose for a certain number of people, that doesn't mean that all these apps should be included in the OS...
I hear what you're saying but I'd be surprised if BT used as much battery as the GPS. I took the GS2 out for a test yesterday on a short 1.5 hour mountain bike ride with the internal GPS on and it drained 50% of my battery. A lot of my rides are usually a lot longer in the 4-5 hour range so the battery will never last.
I assume BT will use a lot less power but I have yet to test it which I'll be doing in the next few days.
As for it not being a common feature request, I guess that you are right when taking into account all the Android devices around but it's actually quite commonly asked for in the cycling and running world where you want to track your path and other parameters during your training. the phone batteries just cannot cope with powering the internal GPS for more than a few hours.
I don't mind using some apps to enhance the OS but I just feel with Android it seems expected that you need to bolt apps on to achieve what normally is basic functionality. Also a lot of the apps require permissions to parts of the phone that have nothing to do with the functions the app is providing. I'll concede that perhaps in this case an app would is suitable than having the functionality in the core OS.

50% in 1.5h sounds a lot.
I don't think this is because of the GPS, what app do you use to log the position? Does it keep the display on all the time?
I haven't checked battery when I've been logging that careful because it hasn't been a problem, but I can see that I have a 3.5 hours log in my track-list and I remember that I checked the map a lot as well during that hike. I'm pretty sure I wasn't close to draining the battery.
Modern GPS-chip doesn't use that much battery, people are overexaggerating the drain from GPS-chip, probaly because of problems with older chip designs. But a lot of software that uses GPS, e g car navigation system are often huge battery hogs though.
I've read that this is the chip inside SGS2:
http://www.csr.com/products/25/sirfstariv-gsd4t
It seems to use 8mW with 1hz update. So the battery in SGS2 can run only the GPS chip for (4V*1650mAh)/8 = 825hours...
So I believe the battery problem you have is caused by something else, so adding an external GPS might not solve anything at all.
Hmm, that throws a different light on it. I'm using Run.GPS for my tracks. I'll have to monitor this more closely and try a different app for comparison. What did you use for tracking your hike?
The app isn't keeping the screen on and I physically turn it off with the power button anyway. The app is also set not to illuminate the screen back light although I don't think it makes any difference with the AMOLED screen.
I'll try a comparison with the external GPS and see how much difference there is to try establish if the app is at fault. I expect tracking using the external GPS to use significantly less battery so if battery drain is still high then it points most likely to being the app at fault - we'll see.
Is there any app that can list the various apps / processes that are running and show how much cpu is being used? I want to see how much cpu power the tracking software is consuming.

I'm using my "tracks", it is an pretty good (but simple) app, but it does not do any GPS filtering, så especially data like max speed tend to be incorrect.
There are definately app's to check processes, but I don't know which is the best, I believe System Tuner Pro is good:
https://market.android.com/details?id=ccc71.pmw.pro&feature=search_result
I tried Tracker but preferred a more cycling specific app.
Thanks I'll look at that System Tuner app.
