hi,
do you know some modem, which could be connected through usb port on HTC Topaz? i have one sim card, which I use for internet, but I don't want to change the sim cards very often. it's a pitty, topaz is not dual simm phone..
thanks for any advice!
You can not do it anyway. Absolutly. Because Topaz has no USB HOST. You can not connect any USB Slave device to Topaz because it is the USB Slave too. Only pair of USB Slave and USB Host can works, but not Slave-Slave/Host-Host.
thanks for the information. so is there any way, how to use the other sim card only for internet?
e.g. some kind of sim card reader, or other extension?

Your problem (even if the USB port could be configured as a host) would be drivers and I know of no such work around.
The USB port will function only as configured by the manufacturer and this is limited to phone and mass storage configuration at this time.
Addendum -
You have me wondering what would happen if you plug in a broadband dongle to the USB port so, as I have the equipment, I will try it and see what happens when I have a moment spare!
There are adapters that you can use to use two sim-cards in one slot. Don't know how they work as I haven't used any.
Just google "dual sim adapter".

I just opened this up to start discussing WiFi support for XDA I.
I understand that there is no SDIO slot in the XDA that will support the SD WiFi cards, however, there must be some smart guy/company out there that is willing to create something for WiFi capability and take advantage of the existing XDA market.
Here are some ideas for discussion:
1. Have an external device that plugs into the bottom slot for WiFi connectivity.
2. Have a company like PocketPCTechs.com that can replace the current SD slot with a SDIO slot.
If anyone knows of anything regarding WiFi support for the XDA I feel free to share. 8)
Agree. For the time being, the only way of getting connected to a LAN or WAN without schlepping your PC to act as a proxy server for pass-through would be to use a LAN/WAN-to-RS232 converter that could be plugged to the serial port socket on the XDA. I have tried a few RS232 I/O adapters with the XDA. and my results are available at:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/prutchi/xda_connectivity.doc
You'll notice that I manage to communicate with resources on the net via a terminal, but haven't been able to trick IE into accepting my RS232 feed yet.
"2. Have a company like PocketPCTechs.com that can replace the current SD slot with a SDIO slot."
yeah but unless the connectors the SDIO use are already drawn out on the curcitboard where the sd connector is located it would be a lot of work
also maybe it would require a speciel rom
i doubt there is a big enough market though for anybody to get their R&D expenses covered with a product which is being fased out
I agree with the comments and feel a Wi-Fi solution for SD would be greatly appreciated.
One track I am following came to me as I was playing with an USB GPS from a colleague( It had no brandname!) and thought the interface could be integrated to a USB Access point device, there is some coding to make the device recognizable!

to give the xda GPS ?
cant see how this would give it wireless lan
No I used the GPS interface to the XDA and code for recognizind the GPS to connect to a UPS Wireless Acess Point device from Linksys. I did not buy the RS 232 Cable.
Ronin:
Can you clarify on what you did? My understanding is that you use some GPS hardware to access a Wi-Fi point of access. Is this true? And if so were you able to connect to the internet and use IE, email, etc.?
Thanks
Axe Camarao!
I used the cable for a GPS Device to connect to a USP wireless access point on the XDA( zircom USB 802.11b Access Point). I used the software from the GPS as a template to show me how the GPS got recognized as a unit. I used the standard pin configuration instead of getting a cable and sodering it.( short on time!)
Althougth, I am able to ping various sites from CRT I cannot use it with IE. I am trying to emulate the GPS reader software( which is a browser for that format) and port it to Pocket IE. Potentially, but I do not think I will be sucessfull.
This was a test, because I really wanted a small form Wi_FI for the XDA, but it is more of a nuisance than any practical application. The GPS hardware uses the XDA DLLs and heaps in an interesting fashion and will cause the T-Mobile radio Stack to cease scanning for intermitents periods while the cable is attached.
I am trying to find an SD to CF card converter and use a CF Wi-Fi off the shelf unit...
No luck with the idea of an adaptor from SD to Compact Flash and I cannot get the USB Wi Fi Wireless Acess Point to function in pIE. That tentative solution is still too cumbersome and does not have a good form function either.
I left San Disk support a few messages/email to see if they are planing to release an SD WIFI card that is not SDIO based but have no feedback yet.
Also, "contemplating "a SD Blue Tooth adaptor and creating a bridge to a WIFI hub somehow.
I did download the software for the SDIO and reviewing how it addresses the communication protocols in WM2003 and Pocket PC 2002!
Is there anyone with a SDIO phone who has one of these devices? Does it work?
Now an interesting approach can be found at:
http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/ws_display.asp?filter=News%20Detail&item_id={27D5F000-099C-4F7F-8C98-2266E5A4C7AC}
I am sending away for one of these cables- I do have the USB Wireless Access point device and will see if it works...
Bump...
Any news on the WiFi front?
J
not that i've heard but as i see it the market is way too small for any company bothering making a wifi sd-io
I agree. We are not going to get any manufacturer to create an SD card ( when the market is evolving to SDIO anyways) so, I have some "ideas" but need some help to test them out and see if we can get WiFI for our:
Here is the tread:

Can our mini USB ports be used to connect things like usb flash drives, I know it cannot by default but doesnt the samsung and qualcomm chisets support this? I know windows CE supports it as well.
My first guess is that if you had a USB -> miniUSB adapter, it would probably work, assuming there is a driver available to the system. What would be the benefit to that though? Just use a USB cable to grab stuff off the device if you really need something there.. OR, email it to yourself via. a webmail account...
Could be cool to get to work though!

would that be suggesting a possible way to use the mini usb port? what is EXTUSB that htc offers on some of there devices? would that be a host control feature?
To All... the HTC Hermes does not Support USB-HOST... try running a search for this as i have answered this question before.....
Has anyone been successful in using the USB host or USB on the go with the Jetstream? If yes, please share how you managed to do so. Thanks in advance.

Ok. So I was playing around with my device and came across some posts like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450298 and those have helped me to connect a USB pen drive to my Jetstream successfully.
These are what are required:
1. You need to edit (with Root permisions, in write mode using Root Explorer), the build.prop file in the /system folder and enable USB host more - can be found towards the end of the file
2. You need a USB OTG cable (i.e. a micro USB to USB female) cable along with a USB Y cable (i.e. a cable with 2 male USB ports at one end and a single female port at the other end)
3. A USB enabled charger
So, 1st the USB OTG cable is connected to the device, next 1 male component of the USB Y cable goes to this USB OTG cable and the other male component to the USB charger. The pen drive goes in the female end of the USB Y cable.
That is it. You can go to the storage section of the Settings and check it out. It will show the availability of external USB drive. All data on the USB drive will appear in the USB folder under sdcard.
I did not have a USB charger so used a computer in its place and it works absolutely fine. Will get myself a charger, retest and confirm once again.
Did try using an external hard disk with an external power source but wasn't able to get it to work.
To confirm that the device is detected, etc I used USB Host Controller from the Market. It displays both the pen drive as well as the hard disk. However, unable to mount the hard disk don't know why.
In theory, it should be possible as per the above post to connect an externally powered USB hub in the similar manner and get it to work. I don't have that either. So perhaps someone with it could test it out.
Will post screen shots by tomorrow morning. Late now - past midnight.
Hope it is helpful.
Edit - All thanks to sztupy and others at the above post who gave the idea and I just tried it and got it working.
Edit 2 - Screenshots attached.

I tried the external hard disk again. Same result. USB Host controller detects the hardware but unable to mount it.
Also, even in the settings, storage option, the mount usb option is usuable but it doens't mount the hard disk.
Using a Segate 1TB external hard disk with external power source. Perhaps the size too big or may be the NTFS format not supported? Pen drive is in FAT32 and works well. So that may be the problem.
Did anyone else try this out?
NTFS support

Had already tried it but didn't work. Thanks anyways. Will see for some other solution.
Tried a pen drive formatted as NTFS but doesn't work for that either. So the problem is with NTFS format. Have tried Drive Mount and USB Host controller Apps which both claim to be able to mount NTFS drives but no progress. USB MAss Storage OTG is another software however, it needs a kernel with usm enabled. I got the apk and tried installing it-it installs but force closes there after.
Got another software though from another post in XDA itself - called NTFS mount - similar to drive mount. It mounts an NTFS pen drive however force closes while trying to mount an external hard disk (1TB). Post is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13337600
Tried with the 1.2 version and it mounts the external hard disk as well without force closing!
so now have got it to read and write from any external hard disk without any problem! This is great!

I think my tablet is already enabled for USB host mode. When I checked the build.prop file, it shows
ro.usb_host = 1
This means it is activated right?

Yes, mine too was activated by default. However was not sure if I had changed or it came like that so included that too.

Could you please tell me what and exactly how you are doing so that I may be able to help you out?
Attached is a picture from the thread I mentioned earlier on. I use the 2nd setup. May be this will be of help in case the connections aren't done right. Also, make sure that all connections are made, with the power put on before you connect the entire setup to the USB OTG cable and then to the tablet's port.
Could you share which hub you are using that has a mini USB connector?
Also, I'm trying to connect a 120GB HDD and I guess this might be too big? What is the larger capacity drive you have been able to connect?
Lastly, does a larger drive take longer to connect/display and thus I should wait longer? If so, how long does it usually take?

I have put up a step by step procedure with all hardware I used and how I got it to work at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25443308#post25443308.
hope it solves your problem. If not, I will try to help you out for sure.
Its posible to manage this together? Some file manager or commander?
Yes with the archos's filemanger
How?
With one memory stick in 3G slot & one memory stick in USB host its just one USB position in file manager.
I hawe there Internal , SD card , Network , USB( just -one)
the 3g connector is ON ?
Yes
Yes.
Wait,
i testing that this afternoon
you have
1 key usb on 3g connector
1 key usb on usb host
the filemanager viewing the usb host when the archos boot
after if you put 3g connector to on you view the another key...
i send a mail to the R&D for more informations
Thank You
Thank You
it is not possible
now and in the future
I have a micro SD card in the SD slot and also have another micro SD card in a USB reader in the 3g slot, they work perfect together. I just have to remember to turn on the 3g setting when I want to access the card. I hope that made sense...... i'll try and upload some pics later.
Sent from my ARCHOS 80G9 using XDA
with micro SD and 3g connector it is ok
but here it is 3g connector and usb key on cable host
I see what you mean. If you plug an flash drive into the 3g port, it'll show up as a USB drive. But then if you plug another USB drive into the host port on the side, it disconnects the first one and starts using the new one. It's unable to recognize both at the same time. Since I've got a hard drive version I don't know exactly how the flash ones work. Maybe they have an extra bit of code that allows them more then one external storage medium so that the flash card can work in parallel to the already built in memory. But as far as I can see, there is no way to for it to see both USB devices at the same time.
yes the filemanager see on external USB !

So I would not be able to transfer files directly from a CF card reader to an external hard drive, using the archos G9 as a pass through? I'd have to transfer the files from the card reader to internal hd, then from the internal to the external?
Thanks for the help.

Hii Experts
I was just thinking that if one can install a USB Datacard/Internet Modem on an android phone using USB to Micro USB convertor.
It may seem weird but if it can be done a lot of people will be saving a lot of money.
I have a USB internet data card which I use on my laptop & it has unlimited plan. Usually at home I share my laptop internet using connectify & connect my Android phone to that. But if the laptop is not switch on or I am outside I have to use career services which is very costly.
So I was thinking that if I already have a USB Modem with unlimited connection & an android phone with micro USB, there could be some way to connect it with USB to Micro USB convertor & install it on my phone directly & use it on the go.
Already android tablets are supporting USB internet modems.
