Hi,
Do I have to use original USB cable to transfer data to/from my Hero? I tried my USB mini cable which I use with my digital camera and other devices, and Hero started to charge it's battery, but didn't display any notification about possible file transfers. Also dmesg on my Ubuntu doesn't show any connected USB device. However, it works with original HTC cable, but it's quiet short.
You need the original cable. Sorry :-(
No you don't. A normal USB to Mini USB cable works fine.

So, why mine doesn't work? As I said, the cable works fine with my camera and MP3 player.
all generic usb cables i have used so far (at least 6, maybe 10) have worked fine. charging, file transfer, adb worked.

Whilst you don't need to use the supplied USB cable, this part of your statement is *incorrect*. There have been many, many, examples here on these forums where people have had to switch to using a different cable in order to get a PC to recognize the Hero correctly.
My advice to anyone having such an issue is to try a variety of different cables, even if the cables you are using work with other devices.

Dave

As some of you know, I could get USB host to work on the release candidate of HoneyComb but not on the final release (3.55.405).
This morning I thought I would try again, my flyer was turned off (completely shut down) when I plugged in my portable hard drive (Seagate 120 gig using the Y cable one to a power supply the other to a USB micro USB adaptor).
I then booted up the Flyer … low and behold there it was. Shows up as USB in Astro but, does not show in Root Explorer.
I was able to watch my movies and play my music from the hard drive.
It seems like the flyer with latest HoneyComb will only see USB peripherals at boot time.
Great news!
If you care to try some other configurations, I'd love to get your results when using a usb keyboard or mouse?

Will do … just keep in mind that any device well need to be self powered (because the Flyers port does not provide power) I’ll try with a powered hub.

It works perfectly fine without rebooting. The only thing is that you have to umnount before unplugging. It worked for me even with one 1TB Harddisc.

What Rom are you using? Most of us have been unable to get Usb host working on the latest HoneyComb release.
Edit: just tried again and won’t work for me unless I boot with it plugged in. Also, booting takes a longer than normal time.

Please be more specific, on what custom ROM and what version, you have try? Do you have tried other usb peripherals too?

I don´t use a custom rom I use the HC stock rom. You have to have the "/mnt/sdcard/usb/" folder. If you don´t have it, create it. I use only as I mentioned a 1 TB Harddisk and I used also two different kind of 8GB USB Flashdrives with a Y-Cable with external powersupply and a Nokia OTG Cable.
They work all perfectly fine. Only I had to unmount the devices before I unplugged otherwise I needed to reboot as well for a another usb device.
I didn´t try any other peripherals.
I am not a "tecfreak", just an average user who likes to tinker and mess around with his gadgets. If you have any further question I can help you with, Please ask.
P.S.: before I used the Nokia Cable, I used another Micro USB Male to USB A Female Cable and that didn´t work, so If it doesn´t work for you than it might be caused by the wrong cable. ????

Been doing some more testing … I noticed (when using the Y cable on my drive) that when I power up the hard drive the charging light on the Flyer comes on.
So, somehow power is back feeding to the OTG cable.
This leads me to believe that it may work better (like Elfuente stated) with a different cable.
Perhaps the Nokia cable does not have the charging pins
Ps: I noticed that on my Y cable … one is labeled Power+Data the other is labeled Power
I had a rather long message typed about this but the browser crashed, I'll possibly retype most of that later, but for now suffice to say that cables are singnificant in these setups.

Ahhh there you are I was hoping you would show up. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be you. Do I smell another hardware hack?
Keeping in mind my abilities in this field are very limited but, I was thinking … if I could come up with a battery pack for a portable hard drive I could (with the proper cables) then just plug it in and have the ability to read and write to it.
Maybe another hack for an adapter to provide power from a battery with usb connector or mains usb charger but it should actually be fairly trivial to implement, so maybe a schematic also for anyone who is remotely comfortable with soldering.
The big difference between OTG and other usb modes is that pin 5 is electrically significant. When grounded it indicates to an otg capable device that it should go to OTG-A mode (OTG equivalent of host mode), when floating it's ignored and the device will not detect a connected device.

That´s exactly what I do. I travel a lot and was used to carry a netbook with me. Now I changed to the Flyer and use the external 1TB Harddisc with a BatteryPack as external powersupply (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003ZV1A1Y).
As I already mentioned: It works fine for me.

Thanks for this.
I ordered one of the Nokia cables and if it works for me.
I’ll then take both apart (drive and battery) and mill up a case to mount both of them in.
This only works with honey comb right?
and by the way, the disc has to be formated wit fat32.
... and yes I formated a 1TB harddisc with fat32, look here; http://www.thetfp.com/tfp/tilted-te...-formatting-large-hard-drives-32gb-fat32.html
Hey guys,
Was wondering if connecting another phone in mass storage mode to SGS2's OTG cable will work? Anybody tried this? No harm to SGS2, right? If this works with a normal and OTG cable we can have high speed transfers between SGS2 and any phone!!
Never connected another phone, but I was using USB OTG with Philips GoGear mp3 player, worked flawlessly. My OTG is not original cable but some cheap converter plug identical to this one. One thing I noticed is that device like mp3 player tries to charge itself from SGS2 and juice is leaking faster
connected another sgs2 and it worked.... the connected phone was slaved. used stock rom

I think any OTG usage will drain battery, but for a powered device the current might not be sufficient to charge. I wonder how much is the current limitation from a OTG device?

Yay! I am buying a OTG cable.
Good Morning
When I want to connect my droid X phone to my laptop, the cable is usb on one end and micro usb on the other end. So can I use that on my Sony S also to connect to the laptop? or are there different wires inside the cable or something so that I cannot use it, different wattage or amperage or whatever??
As always I am technically challenged LOL
Sandy
The Sony Tablet S uses the standard Micro-USB cable so you'll be able to connect to your laptop with no problems.
It will work for both, given the chip( Mini USB) is the same for both. The cable just carries the current. It is the charger portion that puts out the specific voltages. You are good to go as long as the mini USB fits

Really? This works?
Uh oh. I've tried hooking up my tablet to the PC with a standard micro usb cable. And also with the sony converter that makes it a normal sized USB port and a double ended USB cable. Both of these didn't do anything for me. I've just been transferring files to/from it with the sony converter and a jump drive.
Anyways, let me know if everyone else is normally hooking the tablet to a PC or if you guys are just assuming. Thanks

You should only need the one cable.. The cable I use for my HTC Desire HD works on the tablet and the same with the cable for the Galaxy S II as they are the same kind of cable.
Just connect micro USB, from tablet to PC and it works

Same here. I plug it in with a cheap USB <-> Micro-USB cable and it recognises it instantly and I can copy stuff to and from without even having to mount the storage manually.
Weird!! I tried plugging it in with my normal phone's micro usb cable when I first bought it and nothing happened. I tried again last night and nothing happened.
I just read all your posts about how it will work and I tried again, and my computer recognized it this time.
**This post is brought to you by the power of believing, apparently**
lol
I cannot seem to get the phone to identify on the PC with anything but the Samsung USB cable.
The problem is... I think I already lost it.
I have 4 basically new microUSB cables from various sources and none of them will do anything but charge.
WTheck has samsung done?
Did you try changing the mode on your phone from Change Only to the Hard Drive one once you connect it?
Try a different USB port. This phone works on every USB cable I have in my possession.
i find mine charges really slow unless i use the samsung one:/

Because the phone only charges it does not adapt a mode and therefore wont' let me change it.
edit: fixed it. Problem was I used a program to try and turn on UMS mode and it wasn't working. Wouldn't do any other mode until I turned it back.
But I still have had problems usb cables. The one with my Nook for example wont work at all and it worked with both my nook and my atrix.
S3 wont even recognize on a mac.
surprize me with something amazing android your boring me.
Mine works with the Sensation cable on my main PC, my G2X cable on my laptop and with my Lumia cable in my gym (charger). It also works fine at work with a generic cable (on a PC). Either your phone or your cable is defective.
EDIT: make sure your drivers are up to date on your PC.
Mine works fine with BlackBerry/HTC/HP cables.
For some reason the provided with cable that came with my Verizon G5 is the only USB cable that seems to work with my computer for file transfers. I've tried other various USB 3.0 cables and occasionally they will work but 9/10 times my computer doesn't recognize the device like it does with the stock cable (which Im assuming is a usb 2.0 cable?) It just makes the pluggin in noise and the device doesn't show up in the windows explorer. Anyone know why? I've rules out the cables being the issue since I've tried like 3 now to the same effect. Thanks.
I just bought one of these that works perfectly:
http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030319&p_id=13011&seq=1&format=2
Though my phone does keep reconnecting at first until I select File Transfer (that option doesn't seem to want to stick and it cycles through at least Charging Only and File Transfer). Not sure why it does that, but I did just confirm that it was working by copying an album over to my SD Card.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm pretty convinced the problem isn't my cable though. It's either a setting on my computer or the G5.

Yes it is. But even if it wasn't that shouldn't prevent it from showing up on the computer as a device as far as I know.
anyone determined anything other than whats mentioned? I have this problem as well.
I bought a Logitech cable when I stupidly left my charger plugged into a hotel wall and it works perfectly. I wouldn't rule out there being a problem with the cable itself - I've seen people say some their droid charges slower with a third party cable so there clearly are some differences.
