First I would like to say thanks to Shadowmite and Baffles for their idea of GPS Launcher. Shadowmite's GPSLauncher and Baffles' GPS Launcher are great gps launcher but aren't suite my need so I decided to write one myself.
Shadowmite's GPSLauncher is nice and compact but more work, I need to launch the application and click the 'Tomtom' to launch it (2 step). I like Baffles' idea when click on it and launch immediately but unfortunately it use .NET use lot of RAM.
I have issue on both application for tomtom is that when turn off the screen or someone call in, gps connection get lost and re-click it to open up the gps port for tomtom.
This AstroGPSLauncher open the gps port and launch 'gps application'. AstroGPSLauncher will close itself upon 'gps application' exit in which won't have issue when someone call in or turn off the phone.
iGuidance has issue with refresh the screen. To get iGuidance work correctly you need to get GPS Gate to redirect com 4 to com 2 and use this launcher to launch iGuidanceQVGA.exe, on iGuidance set to com 2. This way won't have map refresh issue.
--How to use this AstroGPSLauncher ---
--Copy AstroGPSLauncher to your Main Memory
\AstroGPSLauncher\AstroGPSLauncher.exe
(YOu can copy AstroGPSLauncher to SD Card but you need to change the path inside the shortcut if you use)
This launcher launch gps application through parameter(if you know what I meant) . I have provide two shortcuts 'Tomtom Launcher' which and 'iGuidance Launcher' for your need(Make sure you install tomtom app or iGuidance to main memory which you should). If you install on different location, you need to use notepad and edit the shortcut to correct gps application and icon or you can use 'SK Shortcut Manager' to create a short that point to your launcher.
SK Shortcut Manager - New Short cut Instruction
Name = you provide
Command = select AstroGPSLauncher
Parameters = select your gps application
and set icon to your gps application.
BTW, this application only take 2k of RAM (very small) and 10k for disk memory. It much less memory usage than Shadowmite's GPSLauncher and Baffles' GPS Launcher
If you like this application, please give some comments.
Thanks to shadowmite cab the file.
For people have problem to get AstroGPSLauncer to work
Please use 'SK Shortcut Manager to create a shortcut for you and simplify your process
Sk Shortcut Manager can be download here http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/S...-Applications/SK-Shortcut-Manager-18241.shtml
[SK Shortcut Manager]
Create new Shortcut
Name = you provide
Command = select AstroGPSLauncher
Parameters = select your gps application
and set icon to your gps application.
YOu can uninstall SK Shortcut Manager after done create a shortcut for your GPS
If you use iGuidance, you can use TalynOne 'iGuidanceInternalGPSLauncher.mscr', with GPSGate to get one step launch solution

Awesome! Thanks AstronusX, will be testing this soon. I updated my FAQ with info about your app.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363431
Edit: Just tested it, I first had to change the IGuidance shortcut to point to my storage card, as you described. I tested both TomTom and IGuidance and they work as advertised. I also tested running TomTom, turning off my Mogul, waiting 30 seconds, and turning it back on, and TomTom reacquired the GPS within 10 seconds. Awesome, thanks again AstronusX!
Works perfect with iGuidance.
Thanks!
What are the chances of adding auto-launch/auto-kill of GPSGate to this app? That would be the end-all-be-all launcher for iGuidance.
I created an iGuidance one tap autolauncher. If GpsGate is not running, it starts it. The script then stores your device's current Power timeout, and backlight timeout and brightness settings. Then sets your device for no timeouts for power and backlight, and sets your backlight to maximum brightness. It then sets iGuidance to skip the startup warning dialog, before launching iGuidance through AstroGPSLauncher. Once you exit iGuidance the script will restore your previous backlight/power settings. The only thing not working in the script right now is that it doesn't terminate GpsGate on exit if the script started GpsGate. I have not found a reliable way to close GpsGate. All current methods I've tried of closing/terminating GpsGate leave an unresponsive icon in the tray of the Today screen.
For those who are interested, I've made a copy of this script available for download HERE. Instructions on how to install/use the script are in the included "iGuidanceInternalGPSLauncher.mscr" Mortscript file.

You need to install GPSGAte software or GPSProxy to redirect the port to com2 and use AstroGPSLauncher shortcuts to launch it.

-- For iGo to work you also need to redirect your port as well, use GPSGate or GPSProxy to redirect your port to com2. After that, use 'Notepad' and open one of the short cut(eg. Tomtom Navigator Launcher) and change Tomtom Path to iGo Path and copy ur new shortcut to to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and launch it from there (make sure you have gpsgate setup and it is running).
--Note: You can find 'Tomtom Navigator Launcher' shortcut in my zip file.
To create shortcut, you can use SK ShortCut Manager to make it simple and you can change icon as well.
Yah, I figured out the shortcut last night. This program ROCKS! THank you so much. I find a signal in 10 secs. With my bluetooth receiver, sometimes the damn thing wouldn't even connect. THANKS!!

So i got it working with iguidance, kinda annoying though. The GpsGate (which is not free, any free alternatives?) puts an icon on the today screen, so i run gpsgate then iguidance, what is the benefit of running the AstroGPSLauncher instead of just running iGuidance itself? iGuidnace was a little "choppy" when i drove to work today. might try tomtom (no TTS) sadly and see if its better.

Try my MortScript, it automates the AstroGPSLauncher, GpsGate launch process, it also turns off the backlight timeout while iGuidance is running, and skips the warning screen for you.
Without the AstroGPSLauncher iGuidance will not see the GPS at all, unless you ran another program that started the GPS for you, AstroGPSLauncher starts your GPS radio for you, and keeps it alive.
Also check my FAQ for a link to a free GpsGate alternative, though I haven't tested to see if it works.
Tilt & TomTom
Has anybody have any problems with there Tilt phone after installing TomTom 6. ?
I tried your mortscript but wasnt working...put the shortcut in the program folder, installed mortscript but when i try and run it says script/programs/GPSLauncher/iGuidanceinternalGPSLa (its then cut off) not found. waiting for existance. storage card not initialized?
iGuidance is on my storage card obviously but its all working other wise...how do i fix this? thanks...new to mort script so i apologize if this is basic crap...
I'm testing some Navigator Software on my Athena
all the software is running from SD card ( 4gb)
Here is my experience:
TOMTOM 7 good but it is a little slow when turning / roundabout
IGO8 graphics is very good but the arrow seems be left behind the real position.... i see that for adding POI i need to change the layout and i dont know how to find a 640x480 layout....
The ROM is the standard HTC WM6
Any experience news ??
Is it possible to increase the framerate in tomtom ???

I have used both these software and do not experience the problems that you described. However, I run them off the microdrive rather than storage card.
Just like me.
It's better to have them at the MicroDrive ( including the maps ).
If you use SKTools you can see that the read/write values are higher at the MicroDrive than the miniSD.

well i use tomtom7 but i cooked it into my rom and it definitely made it a little faster
I found Telenav to give the best directions and POIs. you have to have a data connection, but better than TomTom and iGuidance...
But CP7 is best
it's tomtom for me, installed in the microdrive complete with the maps. and coupled with eaglesteve's previous input on the best gps settings. haven't had any issues for the past 3 months.
cheers
I rank these software in this order
Best on top:
TT7
IGO 2006
IGO8
TT6
CP7
I've tested TT6-TT7, IGO8
TT7 is the best IMHO. I use navigation SW mainly to have speed traps alert and with IGO isn't easy to add speed traps ad POI.
I installed it on SD, may be I lose some speed but I save a lot of power

Besides superior overspeeding warning features, it also allow user to update road and share it with others.
I installed on MD. No concern with power because in the car, I always with my device charged.
Unlike eaglesteve and sergiopi, I use navigation software mainly for navigation, speedcameras are a bonus (and free with CP)
For navigation, especially contact integration, CP makes TT look primative IMHO

Disagree, sorry.
Speed camera is not speed warning. They are different.
1) In TT7, the legal speed limit of the road is kept, and if you travel above that speed, you get warning.
2) Speed camera, in another thing. In TT, there are the fixed speed camera and mobile speed camera. I think the mobile location speed camera is subscription base, and is optional. In CP7, there is only fixed location speed camera.
3) Finally, there is the red light camera, which warns you not to dash the red light at traffic junction.
4) TT7 also warns if we are near a school zone. In Australia, school zone's maximum, speed is 40 km/h at selected time only.
Integration with contact is so basic that we don't mention it. It's nothing to shout about. It's just taken for granted. iGO has it. Tom Tom has it. All contact database appears on the navigation software. If you make changes to the contact database, the navigation get the udpated address also.
In TT, if you choose "Navigate To" in the main menu, there is an item called "Contact", with exactly the icon as our Contact Application. Choosing that will bring up only your contact with addresses. The contact list is sorted in alphabetical order to faciliate locating them. Clicking on it will reveal the detail address. You can also use the FIND button to find the contact more quickly if your list is long. What else would we want that TT7 is not having in this regards?
One of the features of TT7 is to provide an onscreen button. If I see a speed camera that is not in the database, I can press that button while my car is at that coordinate. When the trip is over, I can go back and put in the details of the change I want to make. This can be used to correct the map, put in new POI, etc without affecting your driving. You do the actual update after the trip.
There are so many other features which are only seen in TT7. I was once a die hard iGO user ( and before that a die hard Copilot user), but now I'm completely won over to TT7. I'm not associated with TT in anyway, just like I was'tn associated with iGO or Copilot. I share what I think is the best to whomever want the best. Today, my top choice is TT7. Tommorrow? Who knows? May be Copilot 8. I have no blind allegiance to any software. If it is the best, it is my choice. I'm willing to be convinced that there are better software than TT7 out there now.
Speedcameras are not an issue for me, I have only ever been caught for speeding once (luckily I'd just slowed down so I was only doing 94MPH) and that was by a video camera in a police car - TomTom would not have alerted me to that.
The contacts in tomTom6 (I must admit I have not seen 7) is so clunmsy and slow I would have reached my destination before finding them - CP7 just uses outlook contacts and IMHO is just a lot better and I use it most of the time.
The interface of CP7, especially on the Athena is, again IMHO, a lot more user friendly than TT and allowing others to track me is useful so my g/f can see where I am.
I think we want different things from navigation software - i wouldn't rate TT at all and love CP - for you it's the other way round.
Guess it's lucky for the makers that we're not all the same!

I agree with you on this, I also installed on SD to save power. I actually delete my microdirve and never reformatted it. It was not reliable so I had no reason to have available for anything. I am wondering after not using the for while does it get better or reliable, may be I should format on my next reboot

hehe - I hope I am too but reviews like this http://www.coolsmartphone.com/article768.html and others I've seen put me off, although I've not tried it myself.
Just to declare what some people might think a conflict of interest:
I bought CoPilot when it first came out on the SmartPhone - well, 1 month after it did, because someone bought it then got a company car with built in Sat nav so I got it cheap (another thing CP does well is transfer between devices). That was V5, I then upgraded to V6 and I think, all things being equal I would have prefered TT6 for my purposes.
I then beta tested CP7 so disn't pay for it but if I had the choice of which to buy TT6 or CP7 it would definatly be CP7. I have not seen TT7 but don't believe it is that much different from TT6?
Lots of people in the UK like iGo8 but Garmin XT and Route 66 (again popular in the US) are not that popular.
In the US you have to buy the maps of the whole US for CP7 which does make it wuite expensive and hence not as popoular as some cheaper options and although speedcameras are improved in CP7 it is one area TT still beats it but, as I've said, that is not the most important feature for me.
Different people want different things and the availability of maps and other s/ware in your area will all affect your decision, but for me CO7 wins hands down.
So far....
Hi All,
On my Diamond i use Oziexplorer CE for viewing and using landmaps (I think thats the English word, the Dutch word is "stafkaarten." Please correct me if i'm wrong).
I was wondering if there is an app for android that can do the same. I'll be receiving my hero any day now and this is the last app i need to replace.
Many thanks in advance.
If there isn't any, thats allright too. Then at least i can stop searching
Google maps or Route 66
don't know of anything (Google Maps or Route66 or CoPilot or whatever is NO alternative for OziExplorer ).
Did you try asking the authors of OziExplorer if they have an Android build in the back of their heads somewhere?
Maybe this can be interesting?

sounds interestimg, ill try ...
did some tests with ownmap, but the map utility doesnt work and devs are not responding to mail
P.S: Looks promising, however, there are certain challenges with the conversion of ozi files, some segments are distorted and its about 200m away from the actual point ... In ozi, the maps are very precise. Will test and do some research, I'm shure, theres a solution to the 'minor' problems
Well, the month of august in Spain is the "hollidays month" and for this reason it's possible that developers are absents.
I like Oziexplorer and CompeGPS with my Windows Mobile PDA, and I will try change to Android with a new PDA HTC Hero and test this software Oruxmaps in it.
Greetings
OruxMaps
Obviously I did a mistake in converting, a second try lead a to much better calibration. First impression is very good, OruxMaps shows my position and let me record tracks and logfiles, I can set waypoints and follow a route (not tested yet). First wish: a tool to lock the keys and blank the screen to save energy why tracking a hike ... But as said, very promising application
looks very promising indeed. Does anyone know how to convert ozfx3 files to be used in this app??

but you might try demapper from terraperfecta
Can't download it from the market. Known issue?
I've created an Android application called Viamici for which you do not need a PC to calibrate a map - you can do it on a phone
New ideas for Ozi or substitute on Android?
Does anybody know about new developements on the problem: Running Ozi on an android-device?
Next wekk I visit the USA and will buy a Nexus One. It would be great if I could go on with all my Ozi-calibrated maps. Thanks for any idea!

Encouraging?

Ozi Explorer replacement
Hi all,
Some time ago I wrote crossplatform library for reading Ozi Explorer maps
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/swampex/) and Ozi Explorer equivalent for Linux
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/ozex/) - and even used it in offroad competitions.
Moreover, I started project for Android and got a development version.
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/).
Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to the lack of time, but if someone want to take a part in development - please contact me.
BTW, I'm rare visitor of xda forum, so e-mail will be preferred way.
Best wishes.
yozi: replacement for ozi explorer on android
I've decided to reinvent the wheel and released alpha version of yozi - Ozi Explorer replacement for Android OS.
Features:
- Topographic maps rendering (ozf2/ozfx3 formats)
- Maps automatic load for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a currend location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Import waypoints from GPX, KML, WPT files
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Shared waypoints database with RMaps2 application
- Worldwide search for places by name using Google's API (requires network access). You can search for a city, street, lake or river and view it's location on your topographic map.
Can be downloaded here (sorry, I'm novice here and can't post direct URLs yet):
_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/
Yozi works great!! It reads directly the Ozi maps files used in the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile Oziexplorer. There is no need to convert the files using a Desktop computer. Like the Windows Mobile version YOZI can read ozf2/ozfx3 files. These can be converted from other format using the normal desktop version of OziExplorer.
Congratulations!
I really recommend it to everybody. Easy, simple and clear app:
http://code.google.com/p/yozi/
BTW: Why is it not yet in the Market?

unfortunately when i tryied to do that with IGO footprint never paste the coordinates to the navigation, just mnaged to start it. actually that makes footprint kinda useless.

Hi
I am traveling to some parts of Asia where apps like Tomtom do not have maps and I am thinking if it is possible to have Google maps copied to the SD card and use the HTC GPS and Compass for navigation. Not just as a map but like a point to point tuen like Tomtom.
Rgds
Google maps are online only.
Garmin Mobile XT could be an idea. They have quite a large range of maps, including Asia, as far as I know.
Have you looked at iGo by NavnGo. This is their Asia coverage:

Don´t remember the app name either... also, there seem to be conversion tools to "translate" open street maps into commercial navigation readable formats.
Anything similar to translate Google maps to readable format?
