Background wifi? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else notice that the desire conveniently leaves the 3g on and connected but not wifi? Personally I think its wrong since it runs up our data (verizon has a 5gb cap for instance)
-Chr1831

Yup I noticed that too, but I dont neccesarily have a problem with it because I'm not really ever downloading anything that will get near 5GB.

the wifi can be set to stay on when the phone is asleep. it is under
settings|wireless controls|Wifi Settings|menu/advanced|Wifi sleep policy
set it to never and the wifi will always stay on even when the phone is asleep.

Actually, it may be on, but not necessarily connected. The only time it's "running" is when either one of the up/down arrows is lit. When there isn't any data activity you'll see a "D" under the 3G/1X icon, which means it's dormant and not using any data.

Wifi too slow? And how much of ur unlimited data so u use?

Love the speed on my 4glte (30mbps! WOW!), plus I do have unlimited data (grandfathered), so the only reason I use wifi is so that I don't over abuse the unlimited data every month, or if I want to save on battery life.
That said, wifi is extremely slow. I have 20mbps cable at home and I only get 2 through my phone, even when standing right next to the router. My laptop connects to the same network and gets 10!? Why is the wifi on these phones so slow (same issue with tbolt)?
Also if u have unlimited data how much do u use month? Are you afraid they might take it from u?

I've noticed the same thing. I have 35/35 internet at home, but when the phone is connected to WiFi I don't get anywhere near those speeds. I actually almost get better speeds leaving the phone on 4G even though I'm lucky if I have two bars at times.
Never have been able to find out why, but since I do have unlimited data as well (grandfathered) I typically just leave the 4G on and forget about WiFi.
My typical data usage per month is two maybe three gigabytes with moderate usage, but now that I'm on 4G it might increase some since I'll probably use Google Music more often.

I get 25mbps to my home and pull 17-22 on the phone. You may have a bad antenna. Also, speed test isn't very accurate. Your "speed" is restricted to what the server you are pulling from can provide. Also, you may have a bad/slow router. If it is dated, I suggest upgrading.
So long as you are not using exponential amounts of data, like 8-10GB, they shouldn't throttle you, and they CAN'T just take it from you.
I don't have unlim because I just switched last week. But I have the double data 4GB plan. Really glad I have that and not 2 gig because I am using an average of 2-3x the data that I did each day on my Desire before I switched. LTE just causes you to use more lol.
I wish I had unlimited because I would watch a fair amount of netflix over 4G
BTW, I have a Linksys E1500 Router.
I agree. You may have a bad antenna, because my Wifi speeds are just fine. I get 30 down and 7 or so up, so there's no problem there. Here's something I've noticed though: My wifi won't stay connected while the phone is asleep. It always goes back onto 4g for some reason. This happening to anyone else?
The only time i get wifi is at Starbucks or the library... and both places are show as hell. No internet(or even tv) at home because i am rarely home. So that being the case, i absolutely never ever use wifi period.
As for data usage, let's just say it's enough that a few people here have labeled it "abuse".

It is a setting. The phone is set to go back to 3G/4G after 15 minutes of sleep by default. You can change that in Wifi Settings. You may have to hit the menu button and go to the "advanced" menu to change the setting.

I use 10-20 GB a month and they don't throttle. They only throttle top 5% of 3G users and only on crowded towers and peak times.
low WiFi speed usually means your router is using overused channel (channel that many of your neighbors are using). WiFi Analyzer is nice free app that will tell you which channel to use.

That's about what I get too. I don't think it is the antenna, I think its the channel and or the bandwidth / modulation settings on the router.
I noticed when I turned my data connection of my WiFi seemed faster. My home network is maybe 15-20mbps and I usually get 12mbps in speed test. If I have data on WiFi is slower.
4g even with one or two bars is about 6-
12 mbps but I loose signal in parts of my house.

no problems for me, get wifi at 10-20mbps down and 5 up, and my home plan is 30/5 so that is good.
My wi-fi works as good as the data connections, no problems with wi-fi being slow. Use wi-fi 80% of the day and it is always fast.

Almost always on LTE now. I don't see anywhere near the speeds others get. Usually around 5megs.
This month already I have used 4 gigs of data. the most I ahve ever used in 3g was 3.6. BTW, my billing cycle is only 5 days old
Gotta love netflix and Sons of Guns!!!

You might be in an extended coverage area, and like I stated above, SpeedTest is not accurate at all and completely dependent on the server you pull from. Try changing servers and I bet you see faster speeds.
a friend of mine said that verizon will throttle you above a certain data usage. So we decided to test the theory.
I setup an FTP from my home PC, and proceeded to DL , over 4g, my entire movie collection.
It was a little hard to do because the SD card (16gb one) kept getting full. I ended up with about 33GB of usage for that month. (This was using the droid charge a few months ago)
no overage fees, no throttling.
However I bet if i did that every month, i might see throttling.
If you lived in a high use location (like NYC) you might have gotten a warning.

I checked this "advanced" setting just for the heck of it and saw a setting for "best connection" or something similar. It seems by default this is checked off cause it says it uses more battery. Once I turned this on I doubled my wifi speed so it seems like everything is now working correctly.

[Q] 4G LTE Drops out While On Mobile Hot Spot?

Any other Rezound owners with Mobile Hot Spot seeing 4G dropping out fairly often? I almost never lose 4G LTE signal anywhere in my city, but when I have MHS on, it drops out fairly often.
Just noticed this today in Chicago while using hot spot in airport. I think I'm going to call Verizon about it.

I just called and got transferred almost immediately to level 2 tech support. They checked to make sure everything was configured properly on their end of the network before asking me to go to Manage Applications and clearing data in the Mobile Hotspot app.
I'll see how that goes. Next step they said would be Factory Reset, and then possibly switch out the phone.
The thing is, neither of these might fix it. It could be an issue in the software that requires an update. So if any of you have Mobile Hotspot, pay close attention to see if the 4G LTE connection drops out periodically while using MHS, and if so - dial *611 and complain.
Squeaky Wheel gets the oil!
So that didn't fix it. I so very reluctantly am going to try a Factory Reset. I can't stand the idea of having re-download all my apps and set up GO Launcher again, but this is infuriating.

Yeah I'm going to do the Factory Reset tonight and report back.
Even if I keep the MHS for $30/mo to help ensure unlimited data and no red flags, once we have S-OFF, I definitely might switch to another tethering application if it runs smoother.

I had my laptop tethered one night just checking it out and it was dropping off but I thought it had to do with the screen going to sleep. Does LTE stay on while phone screen is asleep? I know that putting the phone in "sleep mode" is supposed to turn it off during the set hours which makes me think that it's not supposed to happen in the normal course of the day when the screen turns off.
I'm looking into cutting off my dsl if the 4g suffices for my internet connection at home.
I'm traveling for work and there is no 4g signal where I'm at and I had no problem with 3g tethering. No drop outs.

Forgive me if this is only peripheral to your topic.
I can't prove this but I believe mobile hotspot is throttled. If you want to see for yourself, try this. Using mobile hotspot, see if you can stream a 1080 p video from youtube on your laptop. Chances are, it will have to stop to buffer every 30 seconds or so. Now download and install easy tether. Now, open 4 you tube windows with 1080 p videos on each 1 and a run em all at the same time.
The difference is freaking amazing. With wired tether this phone will run FOUR videos in high definition simultaneously. That is true 4 g speeds.
By the way running the speed test app I can pull about 26 down and 18 up. So I'm pretty damn sure mobile hotspot is seriously throttled back. Verizon claims wireless hotspot is 4 g, but I smell fish.

False alarm. =\ 4G started dropping out again after a while. Especially when clicking from Amazon Instant Video to Netflix and back on my Roku player. They did recommend trying 3G, so I'll try that before bringing the phone in for an exchange. Not excited about forcing them to manufacture another phone, but we need to press this issue, if it is indeed either a software issue or hardware issue. The WiFi and LTE Rx anetenna are right next to each other so that is suspicious!
Anyone else having this issue needs to start calling Verizon! The Tech Rep said he saw no record of this complaint for the Rezound in the system. So they are assuming it is just me.

Easy teether is for wired USB internet. Mobile hot spot is for wireless connections. I would highly recommend easytether , it works flawlessly with no problems whatsoever. Here are screen caps of the problem that everyone is having. Verizon is blaming HTC for it saying they don't show any problems on their side. Funny however, my Thunderbolt did it, my Droid Charge at times used to do it and now the Resound. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the app. I did a factory reset, trade sim cards, two tickets for the engineer coming back with no problems, a call from HtC saying phone was defective, a new Rezound with a new sim card and STILL it looses connection.

So... using a usb tether are you using your data plan and not your mhs plan?
And in order to have phone on charger and usb tethered you'd need a splitter then, would this affect the data rate if there is charging going on? Any reason why this can't be done? Trying to figure out how to use my unlimited mhs in place of my dsl and drop dsl. As long as it's reliable and they don't kill my connection with throttling I might do it.

If you have unlimited MHS, then you should have already gotten in on the unlimited data glitch. No splitter. Wired tethering uses data. Phone charges while (wired) tethering. You'll get FAR faster speeds too. (But you can bet they know you're doing it.)
I have noticed when using the MHS to connect to my epic 4g touch that if I leave my rezound ON, I wont lose the connection. But as soon as I turn the screen off the rezound, itll lose connection...

Anyways, great news (sort of). HTC contacted me today and told me they are looking into it since they've been getting calls about this issue. Looks like it is a big problem. They will call me back from 48 hrs up to 10 business days. Glad to see this is getting recognized! Lets keep pressuring VZW/HTC on getting this issue resolved.

Why is Edge faster than 3G or H+ (see edit)?

Ever since I've transferred to AT&T I've had laggy data issues. I finally rooted/flashed to AOKP, and while trying to address the issues of no APNs appearing or saving and no signal status in the status bar, I've come to find both AT&T and T-Mobile as Available Networks under some network setting. Am I chasing ghosts here, or is there something actually up?
EDIT: So I really need help troubleshooting the issue. I'll logcat, dump, or whatever necessary. I've been in many cities/areas and this problem persists: if I haven't used data or the phone hasn't been backgrounding traffic, it'll take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds before a connection is made when I try to access an internet-related function on my phone (even though 3G/H is displayed in the status bar). Out of shear frustration (this has been happening since I got the phone, under stock ROMs and now under AOKP), I tried messing with *#*#info#*#*. I changed WCDMA-preferred to WCDMA-only -- no improvement. Oddly, I also tried GSM-only. Well, great improvement! Even though I only have E, there is absolutely no latency in waiting for a connection -- so pages and other data end up loading faster on Edge than 3G !
I have absolutely no idea why my phone takes forever to make a connection. Under 3G, I see only but a few upstream network activity blips (even under full bars) for as much as 30 seconds, before there is any downstream activity (and when it comes, it comes). Can anyone help???
P.S.: I'm going to try using a friend's SIM later for comparison.

The phone displays 3G because thats what it is... then when data is being processed, it shows H because its using the "what AT&T calls 4G but its really HSPA" side of the network. For just standby time with no data, its going to show 3G because HSDPA is traffic, not standby.

Well that's strange. I'm used to phones displaying what network-level they are capable of. So why would it not just display H for HSPA+ when HSPA+ service is available, instead of only displaying under traffic.
I'm going to go ahead an edit this thread to help troubleshoot what I think to be the main issue.
After some trials I see that the network indicator switches back and forth between 3G and H a few tines before making the connection and transmitting data. Hmmm...
Basically, "4G" will eat your battery alive so the phone idles at 3G and jumps to H+ only when you use data. If you were on a "stock" ATT rom it would always read H+, but this is technically false since when its idle the phone sits in 3G. CM9 and AOKP accurately display it which is why you see the switch.

I have a HTC Amaze for a phone and the Galaxy S2 is my media player. Sometimes, when I don't feel like carrying around two devices, I put my T-Mobile SIM in the galaxy and use it as my phone. I must say, Edge is not as slow as I remember it being. Maybe speed is contingent on network traffic. If thats the case, instead of using crowded "faux G" networks, I may defer to Edge to save battery life and get good dl/ul rates.
My phone does the same thing. I noticed it sometime ago. When idle 3g. Internet I get H+. This is with both Shostock2 and Phone Bricker. I was curious to know too but just blew it off because it really doesnt make any difference to me as long as Im getting decent speeds. Im not even with ATT anymore. Went with Straight Talk. Which uses ATT towers. Cant beat the price!!
They don't have the correct apns, but that symbol problem is because the phone doesn't use hspa+ passively, only actively. It causes some lag when downloading, but it is faster fit large data. But your problem is due to a supposed imei range with bad modems. Rehash stick, fix the triangle, and return it.

[Q] Sprint Connection Optimizer Disables 4G?

So after the 3.16 update, I noticed my phone was not picking up 4G. After pulling my hair out to figure out why, I traced the problem to the Sprint Connection Optimizer being disabled. Turn it on, 4G toggles on with it, turn it off, 4G toggles off with it. The previous version of the Sprint Connection Optimizer did not do this. To confirm my suspicions I reset the phone to stock and observed the same behavior.
This is quite the pain in the ass as I don't want my phone connecting to WiFi networks that I marked "remember". In addition, I don't need my phone connecting to WiFi at work (which I use for work purposes under special circumstance).
My short term solution is to forget WiFi networks but this is rather tedious. With the Sprint Connection Optimizer toggled off, I am essentially locked out of 4G. I pay for Sprint's service and I insistent on using as much of their/my bandwidth as I chose.
Can anybody else confirm what is happening. My area has relatively strong 4G coverage, to the point where seeing 3G would be a rare occurrence. I need to make sure this isn't a problem on just my device before I roam my way out of my contract.

Why would you not want to connect to WiFi networks that you mark remember?....jw
If you have the option of your local WiFi versus 4G most times I'd expect someone to want to go with the WiFi... Only time you'd want to not is in places where 4G was better connection, which in those cases I wouldn't want to mark said WiFi networks as remember...
Ill try to mess with it here see how it effects my stuff as were rolling 4G a lot now...

In most cases work wifi won't let you watch porn at work man. Total pain in the a$$. We should be able to toggle our own connections. I will say wifi is better on battery and generally faster. However there's potential risk on wifi that someone could access your device. Extremely unlikely but a possibility none the less.
In my area we don't have lte yet and the other day after installing MeanBean I saw 4G pop up in signal bar then went away then came back. Haven't seen it since. I was so excited but I shouldn't get my hopes up. Sprints been saying 4G for a long time and still nothing. Only reason I stay is unlimited data and I live the HTC evo line.
You have a better chance of winning the lottery 5 times than someone accessing/ hacking your phone over wifi without you knowing about it.
Also there are great wifi apps that tells you who is on the network your on at all times.

I have found that Comcast seems to throttle youtube traffic at certain times of the day, and I have a specific spot in my house where my wifi signal just completely drops (but still claims to be "connected.") I'm obviously going to want my phone to remember my home wifi connection, but I don't necessarily want to always be using it at home.
My situation may not be incredibly common, but it's a valid scenario where you may not necessarily want connection optimizer to run the show.

I'm obviously going to want my phone to remember my home wifi connection, but I don't necessarily want to always be using it at home.
My situation may not be incredibly common, but it's a valid scenario where you may not necessarily want connection optimizer to run the show.

The optimizer isn't your issue there though, as the mere fact of having the network remembered in the phone will cause it to connect to it whenever within range.... Its the fact you have a remembered WiFi network saved and you want to override that in a specific location when still in range of the WiFi... In that case the only solution is to toggle it off when you don't want to use it at that specific location in your house...
Optimizers doesn't just force you to connect to your local network that's remembered as the WiFi being on will do that itself already...

You can try disabling Sprint Connection Optimizer and try purchasing Juice Defender Ultimate. If you use its location service, it will only turn on wifi in places that you turn on the wifi antenna and remember them. And if it turns it on, you just manually turn it off until its trained.

Issues with wireless tethering or VZW "throttling" connections?

Hi all,
Is there any truth to VZW "throttling" folks' who are on unlimited data plans? I ask because I regularly tether my DNA to my macbook air. As soon as I start downloading a large file or use facetime, the connection with the Internet breaks off. I noticed that my speed would drop from 1.4gbps down to 700kbps shortly before the connection breaks.
I know that's rather anecdotal but the connection break does not appear coincidental, it happens every time within a minute of me using anything that requires a large amount of data.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike
I haven't notice while tethering, but I have noticed my overall speed has gone down.
I wonder if you call VZW and ask if you are throttled if they have to tell you?

Did you uninstall TetheringGuard.apk and Verizon Mobile Hotspot (wifirouter.apk) if using a third party or my preference, google wireless tether apk. Since you're unlimited you must be using a non verizon app. I recommend
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&hl=en
Press menu and settings, set the device profile to HTC Rezound LTE/CDMA. Change setup method to netd-ndc master. Scroll down near the bottom and check to enable the routing fix. That's three settings total that you should have touched. Now grant root permissions when you press the big yellow start tethering button and give it a few minutes.
Verizon typically does not throttle connections (whether tethering or not) unless you are specifically abusing your connection. I have unlimited, and typically use at least 50 GB of data per billing cycle and have not experienced any sort of throttling.

Yes, this is true, though I didn't mention it since it happens so rarely.
Verizon can throttle you if you're tethering on their 3g network....by FCC law they cannot on the 4G network.
The OP was most likely in a 3g area since he went from 1.4mb to 700 kb...I'm pretty sure no one gets 1.4gig on even LTE lol
I believe Verizon's official 3g throttling policy is something to the effect if you are in the top 5% of data users and are on 3g on a cell tower that is congested or during "rush hour"so to speak, they will/reserve the right to throttle your 3g connection.
use a user agent switcher when you tether and they will never know its not your phone so you will bypass any type of throttle
i dont know anything about mac's but firefox and chrome have a user agent switcher that you can set on android (mobile sites) or opera for normal (full site) web browsing, gl nawmsayn

Pretty sure this is bad information. User Agent just tells the website what browser you are using so the page can be displayed properly for you. Changing your user agent in Chrome won't affect your streaming of movies in Netflix.
Hi all, I'm the OP, thank you all for your advice. I apologize I had forgotten to mention that my phone is not rooted.
From what I can gather, I was on a congested network (Midtown New York City), so that was probably the source of my poor data speeds. What bugs me is that I had 5 bars on 4G and my speed for first 15-30 seconds were around the 1.4gbps mark. So I can't help but wonder if VZW intentionally throttles down data usage on a congested 4G network, which I believe someone above had mentioned could be the case.
In any case, I'm back on the West Coast and my data speeds are back to a consistent "normal".

If your on lte there's something wrong. I literally havent seen anything under 10 on this phone, and that was with 1 bar.

You do NOT have bars of data, the 'bars' are a visual reference in regards to the signal strength of the cellular connection NOT your data connection.

See how that's supposedly working out with other provisions set forth by the c block agreement. I'm sure they can, do and will continue to due what ever it is they deem necessary to keep their network secure.

How do you UN install the tetheringguard.apk and the Verizon hot spot? I've been running Wi-Fi tether for a while now since I rooted my DNA and all of a sudden tonight it stopped working....wondering if this is the problem

I just delete them using a file explorer app out of /system/app. Should be good to go

I have always wondered that, lol. Out of curiosity, does anyone have problems with 4g/3g switching like crazy? I am guessing that it is giving 3g priority. I have 4g available in my current area, however, my phone only wants to stay on 3g and will sometimes just flash onto 4g for a few minutes..

Tried that last night but didn't work...I think it's because I'm still S-On damn it guess I will have to finally go S-Off

Yeah go for it. No reason to not be s-off if you're on the 1.x firmware. Its not like on the rezound where you had to short out pins using a wire to get s-off haha good times
