Hiya
Have tried a few 2.1 roms based on Eris but none of the ones I've tried seem to have the internet sharing functionality enabled? In 1.5 it used to be in Wireless setting / mobile network settings. I can't see to find it - have tried HeroDroid, BeHoro and Villain roms, in vain.
I need it desperately - as i dont want to pay £££ for expensive hotel wifi..!
thanks
There are a couple of 3rd party tethering apps that are supposed to work with the 2.1 roms: Wireless Tether and aNetShare.

Thanks hyriand - I noticed these apps while doing a search on these forum, but since the internet sharing is supposed to work "out of the box" on android I am puzzled as to why it's not activated.
Anyone knows whether it is because 2.1 no longer supports internet sharing out of the box?

That depend on your provider, Google give them such option, but they'll decide whether they'll give it to you. And I think little provider will like the idea. See AT&T taken the internet sharing apps out of Apple apps shop? You should be glad you have third party apps to choose from.
BTW, internet sharing provided by google require a cable. Both wifi tether and aNetshare work through wifi, which is, in my opinion, quite convenient.
thanks a lot

The 2.1 ROM we currently have is a port from a Verizon Droid Eris, and it is probable that Verizon had specifically disabled the tethering options in their version of the ROM.
I'd expect a generic GSM Hero release to include mobile internet sharing as standard.
Regard,
Dave
thx a lot it explains why it doesn't appear in the settings at all.

I use my phone for 5 basic things: Talking, Texting, E-mails, some Browsing and WiFi and Bluetooth Tethering.
I am on Android 2.1 and rooted my device so I could get WiFi Tethering. All is fine but not enough. I also use an Archos 70 tablet, which won't accept Ad-Hoc communication and will only Tether through Bluetooth, which leads me to the fact that I will need to change the ROM.
I am very pleased with the Sense UI and the stock ROM, and would like to replace it with a ROM that would be similar but allow me to set up a wireless BT infrastructure network/ PAN with my Archos 70. Which is all I am actually missing/ need.
I have searched and read many, many posts, but none address in full my needs/ expectations. I see some ROMs that would seem to get close, but I also notice that some need patching, or not all is functional.
I just want a very close to Stock ROM with Sense UI but with Bluetooth Tethering through PAN.
Based on the above expectations and you user experince, I would sincerely appreciate your guidance and recomendation of which in your opinion would be the ROM to best address my needs.
Thank you very much in advance.
PS: Although I don't use it much, I would also like to preserve the capability to use my GPS. Thanks...
I'm not familiar with some of the acronyms you've used. What do you mean when you say "PAN"?
From what I can tell, it sounds like gene poole's liberated 2.2.2 rom is what you're looking for. He should be releasing a new version soon, I suggest waiting for it.
Hi ECEXCURSION,
Thanks for your reply. PAN stands for Personal Area Network which as I understand it is the profile which in BlueTooth allows for the type of connection I need.
I'll have a look at your suggestion.
Cheers,

To my knowledge, none of the Aria ROMs I have used have BT PAN profile as a service that is available. I am currently running CM 7.0.3 which is Gingerbread and it does not have BT PAN and I believe the the HTC Sense ROMs didn't have them either. Since most of the Aria ROMs have had a Wifi hotspot capability, that has been the preferred choice for sharing the Aria's Internet connection with devices. BT would be slower.
You should install one of the Froyo (Android 2.2) Sense ROMs. They will retain virtually an identical look to the Aria's stock ROM, but will allow you to use the built-in wifi hotspot support that Android added in Froyo (i.e., not a third party app). Android's implementation can create a true wifi hotspot (not ad-hoc), which should work with your ARCHOS tablet.
Your best choice is probably FR008 or Liberated 2.2.2 -- the latter is a newer version of Android but unfortunately has the AT&T notification message that is very annoying.
Hi Drumist,
Thank you for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated. It looks like I will incline myself for the Liberated 2.2.2. which I believe is about to receive an update so as not to have to patch the same.
However I would like to ask what is referred to by the "AT&T notification mesage"? I've seen this comment in other posts, but can't relate to it. Could be because I am on an Argenine network?
Thanks again,

Yeah, actually now that you mention it, someone else who used Liberated 2.2.2 on a different network said they didn't get that message either. I guess they designed it to only show up for people on the AT&T network. So I guess that is good news for you -- that's really the only major issue with the ROM that I'm aware of.
Sounds great! Thanks again!
Although I appreciate people helping each other, threads like these in the development section are not what development is for. Try General.

If I can only get help with getting Open Garden to work or perhaps reconfigure the adhoc or wifi settings, I will be so glad. I am sort of kind of used to the gps issue and working from all the posts and things I can search for but the Open garden is critical cause I have a galaxy tab 10.1 and rely heavily on the ability to tether my phone to the tablet. It did work on CM 7 but this ROM Is NICE and I would just love to have this work on ICS Passion, please help , much appreciated

ICS Passion has a built-in mobile hotspot feature. You can access it at System Settings > Wireless & Networks (More...) > Tethering & portable hotspot

I have barnacle and Open Garden and Wifi tether. I was able to only get wifi tether working versus the other two because the other two operate in adhoc mode and they (the other two) do not have the ability for an end user to change the phone profile. Even though I am using a Vibrant, I had to change the profile in "Wifi tether" to Samsung Nexus and the problems went away
Thanks for you input

Hello all,
I currently have the iPhone 4 and I hate it. I want to move up to the S3 but the only thing preventing me puling the trigger is tethering.
Currently I have a jail broken iPhone and MyWi installed for free tethering. Is there an alternative to MyWi for the S3? Can a rooted S3 be a WiFi hotspot (Infrastructure not AdHoc)?
Thanks in advance,

Rooting an android phone allows you tether without most carriers noticing.
Depends on carrier also

Ok, awesome answer!
Here is another question. Is there a TuT out there to root and tether? Is it AdHoc or Infrastructure? I need infrastructure as my stock Nook can not connect to AdHoc.
Thanks in advance.
Open Garden Tethering is amazing for a rooted phone. Kinda slow (but that's because my LG Ally is slow, and it only has 3G)
My phone has tethering built in as stock and yes it is infrastructure. My phone is from the UK if that affects your question
Some carriers in some countries like to remove or restrict the tethering option. If you're not in such a country then tethering ie. Portable Hotspot is available by default in Android. There is not need to root or install any special app.
When activated your phone will appear as a regular wireless network, ie. infrastructure.
@JSale i am awesome?
in addition we've set up a network on a demonstration with 10 sgs3 on the same tethered connection, so clients number is not limited to 5 like it was on sgs2

I think it may. Knowing the nickle and dime mentality of the US Carriers, I can see them disabling that function in the OS.
If it is built into the OS and then disabled by the carrier could a Rooted Device be re-enabled?

Has anyone had any issues with tethering with the S3? Used to have a GalaxyS on the Three network and it was fine. Got the S3 and it constantly drops net access. Connection between the phone and my laptop is fine, but there are issues with DNS server etc. and on the same network. had a new handset yesterday after advice and help from Three and Samsung and still the exact same issue.
They seem clueless. Does anybody have any idea what the issue could be and has anyone else had the same problem? Tethering via wifi hotspot or usb cable is the same.
Sorry, maybe I should mention that tethering is allowed on my plan.
Does anyone have any idea at all please?
anybody? anyone else had this issue?
i'm having issues with tethering.
If i set security to open it seems to be ok. With any level of security my windows 7 pc cannot connect via wifi.
i've read comments on other forums regarding problems with this.
I've not been able to test out my S3 tethering on 3 yet. Have you had any luck since? I have noticed that the connection while surfing on the phone keeps dropping though.

If you use an International Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) on AT&T you can tether for free anyway. You can also get away with paying $10 a month for Unlimited Internet.
No need for root. Tethering is already built into the menus.
Had to return the phone and cancel my contract in the end. Three uk say it's a software issue with samsung. I have flagged it with samsung.

Wireless tethering (called portable Wi-Fi hostpost in the settings) worked fine on my international unlocked phone out of the box (no rooting, installing apps, etc.). I'm a bit frustrated I can't connect to AdHoc networks though, but that's an android issue. At least I found a way to use my home computer's internet on the phone via usb with 'reverse tether'.
Tethering the S3
I seem to be having the same problem when tethering using the security option under ONLY ALLOWED DEVICES,
Security is configured under WPA, WPA PSK, and WPA2PSK, i get as far as adding these settings to the ALLOWED ONLY LIST, but when you go to connect on the Wi-Fi screen, and where it says Only Allowed Devices, it says NO DEVICES,
And so the only way to make it works is by using the OPEN option, but be warned this will allow outside users to tap in to your network.
Contacted Samsung on three occasions up to today, all they would confirm was that using the OPEN setting would compromise your security, ive asked them to confirm that the security Only Allowed option does actually work in real time , ive asked them to configure it at their end and tell me the step by step method.
will report back what they say.
I did take the phone back to the shop to get them to configure this secure setting, they failed and said try and cope with the open setting for now.
Reading the above posts that Three have said its a software problem doesnt sound good, sounds like im going to have to return mine as i do internet banking.
any news that you guys have on this aspect would be wellcome.
Cheers,
PS, i should say i am tethering to a Sony Vaio windowes 7
Hi all
A while since posted but grateful for all info Ive learnt from this site re rooting etc.
Anyway my query...
What is different about these two settings?
first the background.....
I have a Nexus 4 with a contract that includes unlimited data and up to 4GB of tethering.
My provider has a website that shows a live figure for the amount of data ive used
Now the issue/question....
when I use the "portable wifi hotspot" on Kitkat I can tether my laptop or ps4 to it and it never registers any tethering use... Fantastic!
Then I updated to Lollipop and tried the same and it registers/uses all tethering unfortunately!
Not happy with this I rooted my nexus4 and reinstalled the official kitkat4.4 from the google developers website and thankfully its gone back to my network provider not being able to monitor my tethering use.
So what has changed?
Is there a way around this?
Im tempted to buy the samsung note 4 whilst its still on kitkat4.4 just purely for my tethering benefits but will there be software on that allowing the monitoring?
Thanks in advance for all/any help

No I dont want to monitor the amount of data Im using.
I want to continue tethering my laptop to my phones data plan without my network provider knowing, as I can with Kitkat4.4 but not with Lollipop5
Oh, I think it's cavity "lake" in kitkat an Google fixed it, in lollipop so you have to try finding a new method to do that. If you can explain more how you did that, I will try to help you.

Sorry Im not sure what cavity lake is.
As for how I did it. its simply the option in settings; wireless&networks; More; Tethering & portable hotspot; Portable Ii-Fi hotspot; Then I just ticked the box and it works perfectly, no method or extra apps required.
Its a UK issued nexus4 from google on a uk network if that makes any difference
Thanks
Maybe you should to install a hotspot app such as this app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.core.technology.wifi.hotspot&hl=en .

Thanks for the suggestion, luckily ive rooted my phone back to 4.4 so all is working OK I'm just interested to know why, maybe a change in monitoring/tracing software by google?
Anybody else have an idea?
Or advise if Sammy note4 works OK?
Hey, late reply but what network was able to monitor your usage after upgrade? I'm on UK network and my Xperia has just been offered the 5.0 upgrade but I don't want to upgrade if it will limit my tethering.
Hi,
Did anyone try any of the unlimited tethering solutions (with root)? If it works, which one did you use (or how did you manually configured that)?
Thanks.
Lots of Roms that work with unrestricted mobile hotspot/Tethering. And there's lots of Mods too. Just search the forums! [emoji6]

It seems that lots of ROMs are no longer working, at least for me, and are directing me to a T-Mobile site to allow me to sign up for a hotspot plan. That said, I'm able to connect to my VPN and get around the browsing portion. See the attached screenshot for the page I get directed to. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I don't know about unlimited tethering but this should enable native tethering if it's not included with your plan: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59250345&postcount=69
