I'm running the 2.1 leak and set a destination to a store about 20 miles away...set the phone on a dashmount as I always do. Half way thru the GPS quit working. My wife couldn't get to work . I pulled off and pushed the navigation icon and finally got it to work again..then it quit again 2 minutes later. Any Ideas or suggestions on why and how to fix is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I believe that is a bug with the 2.1 leak version. I think it might be fixed in the 2.1 official leak, but im not certain. you can try reflashing the 2.1 leak file to your phone again and see if that helps.
The culprit, believe it or not was Advanced Task Manager
that task manager screwed me over before with my alarm clock

My phone has been working fine all day and I just looked down at noticed the location it had was Vilnius and the time was 4:30AM. I did a reboot and even turned on GPS for handling the location and didn't fix anything. When I went into the time zone configuration it has New York, NY as my "Home" which is the closest major city to me yet it says I'm currently in Vilnius. And now it just switched to the correct location but has it being 5/12 at 4:44AM.
I just manually adjusted the time and now I'm back to being in Vilnius. The time on the HTC widget shows 4:47AM while the time on the system bar at the top says 9:47PM.
Turned off the manual time and now it went back to the correct time/date. I'm so damn confused right now.
Has this or is this happening to anyone else?
Happened to me and my wife both back in Dec. or Jan. We were on 1.5.
Are you on 1.5 or 2.1? Because we have had no problems since updating to 2.1 root.

People in here have the same experience:
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/20348-eris-google-maps-my-location.html
My phone says I'm in Xuzhou, China whenever I'm in Tustin, California. And it's not just the weather/maps; it's the clock in the notification bar too.
Thanks for the help. I guess I'll wait and see what happens when the OTA hits my phone.
From my experiences with this bug, it's related to the cell tower, not the phone. I tested with three different Erises, on three different versions of the software, simultaneously.
Me too...
I have the OTA 2.1, and now my Eris is showing Vilnius as my location.
I was having a few buggy issues, so I did a factory reset this morning. The Vilnius thing happened tonight, and no matter what I do, it comes back. I've tried clearing my cache on the weather app, switching location on/off, changing my clock app settings, etc.
If I go to Settings/Date&time then uncheck and recheck the "Automatic - Use network-provided values" box, it will go to the correct time for a bit. So far it has changed back every time.
Grrr....
Mine eventually sorted itself out but I had to do the manual time/location management for a few days.
I've turned off use wireless networks, I've checked the GPS settings (Bionix rom has them set to default) and my GPS (using the test tool) can see 9-12 birds if I let it sit there for 30 seconds or so, but after 20 minutes of letting it sit, still doesn't lock on to ANY of them.
I'm using the stock kernel, gps used to lock (although unreliably) on the older build (whatever comes with stock...JFD I think?)

Try sending a message to team whiskey to see if they can help you. Did you install any other updates after installing the Bionix rom and also make sure you give the stable release with fixed GPS a try.
I'm on bionix 1.8, I was outside for 45 minutes and never got a lock.ridiculous.
You guys should re flash. I've ran both 1.8 and 1.9, both lock onto 10/11 sats and 20ft accuracy in less than 15 seconds.

Nope; it's a fresh install of Bionix 1.9. I was thinking of doing an ODIN back to stock and then reinstalling Bionix just in case there was some remnants of a GPS fix left on the device but I figured that would have all gotten wiped by the Bionix install.

Same issue here. I flashed back to JFD via Odin and still had the issue. I then upgraded to JI6 without making any real changes and still have the issue. I've been on Frankin-Twiz, and Bionix 1.8 and 1.9.1 and hadn't ever seen any improvement.
I take that back. I installed GPSTest and ran through a procedure where I cleared 'GPS Aiding Data' (or a similar name) and was finally able to get a fix after sitting and waiting for 10 mins or so. Immediately following, I was able to use Navigation for the 1st time with this phone. Unfortunately, it didn't stick.
If I have 'Use Wireless Networks' enabled under 'Location and Security' and open G-Maps as I sit at my house, it can find my location based on my wireless network's SSID. If I drive away at that point, GPS is able to track my location and Navigation does work.
However, if I open G-Maps while I'm already on the road, it cannot get a fix. Or, rather, it can't get a fix in a reasonable amount of time. I don't consider 10 mins reasonable since anything I'm trying to do which is location-sensitive is usually more urgent than not.
In short, this sucks.
^ exactly the same.
Hi, i've been using GPS a lot before but now it just won't work!
I'm running 2.1 eternity rom and my software is Motonav. It previously worked fine on this exact rom.
The biggest problem is that it says that GPS is activated in settings (location & security --> use gps satelites) BUT there is NO GPS ICON. You know, the one on the top where the clock is, and you see a little satelite, well i don't have it. And the consequence of that is that i always get "Looking for GPS signal" in Motonav which just stays like that for a long long time and never changes
What are my options? I've customized this rom to my needs and i wouldn't want to change it, but of course i will if i have to. I just hope it's not a hardware fault.
Any ideas?
I had the same problem, was running FreeX10 beta 2 and the GPS just stopped. I restored to my SE 2.1 through recovery and still nothing.
I was thinking I would have to return the phone so I flashed the original SE 2.1, then the GPS started working. I rooted, installed xrecovery and restored to FreeX!0 and Voila, GPS is working again.
Hope this helps, it worked for me.
well that sucks but at least i now it's still there, and come to think of it...i did use the HTC Sense rom from jerpelea so maybe that had something to do with it
thank you
anyone have any other ideas?
I didn't think about it, but I did try J's Sense Rom around the time my GPS stopped, might have something to do with it.
I rooted last night and ever since the HTC clock/weather widget and Google Maps shows my current location to Westland, MI which is definitely incorrect.... I live in Nashville, TN. Any ideas? Thus far I've tried all the basics, restart phone, turn off phone w/ battery pull for 30 seconds, clear data on weather apps in phone, and ofcourse toggle GPS on and off several times. Everytime I turn GPS back on and it "locates" me it gets it wrong. I've tried all of the things suggested for older HTC devices with the same issue with no luck. Any help would be appreciated! Or maybe this is some divine sign that I should move to Westland to see what is in store for me.... Thank you to everyone here for all that you do!

+1 for that app, i had to use it all the time with my HTC Hero. my GPS on my thunderbolt has been good so far, fingers crossed.
still didn't work??? As far as I know I followed what you said exactly... Thank you so much for your help!
Got it fixed. Basically while rooting, i gained root succesfully but I what I believe happened was i flashed the custom firmware twice, instead of flashing the downgraded one first, and then flashing the customized firmware. I realized this because I noticed "S-ON" in the bootloader, so I started from scratch and boom, it was fixed. I noticed the location was off and when I was driving around today it was changing my "location" to random places, and also each "location" change would also change timezones... (went from 11:18AM to 5:18PM actually one time, within 5 miles of the different "locations"). So hopefully no one else had this much difficulty paying attention like I did, but if you did, here's your fix! Now rooted, S-OFF, and all is well here in Nashville. Thanks!
Go predators! I live about 44 miles down the raod east of nashvile, however i cant help u eith your problem

I have had my TB for two days now, and I haven't been able to get a lock on GPS yet. I have tried the GPS Status trick and rooted today so I could modify the gps.conf file. None of this has helped.
What is the deal? Do I have a bad phone?
Correction:
Initially it did think I was in Florida, or in the ocean near the Panama Canal. But I have always been in east Texas...
Edit: Changed title at the request of jonakin. This discussion has been continued at the VZW forums at the link listed below.

No you didnt get a bad phone, HTC has stated that they are having a problem with the GPS in the Thunderbolt, however there is not a fix for this as of yet.
So why have others been able to get theirs working with these tricks?
Mine works but takes forever searching for gps.

Mine takes much longer after flashing Das BAMF remix. It was pretty fast on stock.
Tried it again this morning. Turned on navigation when I left for work. After a 20 minute drive, it was still searching for GPS. Most of the time it had my location off the coast of Ecuador, but would occasionally jump to my general area. I assume this happened as I switch towers or as I passed by logged APs.

By turning on aGPS, do you mean allow Google location services (turning on wifi)?
I have had this enabled frmo the beginning.
I have my Thunderbolt and Nexus One sitting side by side now. In GPS Status, my N1 has 11/11 Fix/Sats. Thunderbolt has none.
Am I the only one thats has a completely non functioning GPS chip?
BTW, I am running BAMF Remix 1.5 as of today, but I have seen no improvements in GPS.
Mine said, searching for gps forever. I flashed a gps file an it fixed the problem. I'll try to post where I found it later. Pm me I I don't.

HERE IS HOW TO FIX, "SEARCHING FOR GPS." You'll have to be rooted to do this. Credit goes to: kejar31 over at XDA-Developers. Requirements: You'll have to be rooted. Download the file: ImproveGPSlock.zip on one of those pages by that user. Download Quick Boot from Android Market, then boot into recovery. Download the file: ImproveGPSlock.zip and place it on your SD card for your phone in the root folder(root folder means in no folder) Then reboot into recovery, you see the file in your sd card by clicking the "install zip from sdcard". Install that file, reboot your phone and your navigation will be working instantly. Here's the link to that page: http:// forum.xda-developers.com/ showthread.php?t=1022654&page=2

I tried everything. From Clearing my gps cache to applications on the market. I even started up Google maps then navigation. I also used root explorer to edit a text file. Nothing worked. When I flashed this file it finally did away and is a guaranteed fix for searching for gps.

Did you try updating the radio yet? A RUU was leaked yesterday that fixes the radio, which includes GPS issues. I now get insta-lock with my GPS even when inside a building!

Yes, I flash the RUU with BAMF 1.5. There were no improvements.
I will be receiving my RMA replacement tomorrow.
I'm just wondering what settings does everyone use for their gps options?

Received my replacement phone and it won't lock onto position either. Of all the reported problems, I seem to be the only one with completely non working gps.
Is there anyone else in Texas with these problems?

Just found out that there is a widespread GPS issue in my area due to the recent VZW tower conversions.
Why is it so difficult to get this info from VZW?
What I find interesting is that the gps chip itself seems to be working ok. I'll have the unable to lock issue, run the gps info app, and see that it is watching 5-8 satellites with good signal strength and that it still won't determine a fix.

GPS Status had 0 sats 90% of the time. Every once in a while 1 would come into view, but that's it.
I have received confirmation from two different VZW employees that GPS is broke in East Texas. Something to do with merging Alltel and Verizon towers.
