Need help with boot-looping Hero - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched the forums, and maybe I've just not searched correctly, or for the right thing, but I've not been able to find any information specific to my problem.
Anyways, here's what's happening.
Just picked up a new Sprint HTC Hero, followed step by step instructions to root the phone, no problems whatsoever. Made my nandroid backup, saved to the root of my sdcard, no issues there.
Immediately afterward, I downloaded the Black Sense skin, stuck it in the root of the sdcard, renamed to update.zip like instructions said, turned the phone off and rebooted in recovery, installed the update from the sdcard, rebooted, and now is stuck in a boot loop.
I get the sprint animation, the hero logo with the little android guy, and the HTC splash screen, and then just goes back and does it again.... forever. I have not loaded any other ROM or done anything else with the phone, just rooted the phone, dl'd the theme. Now I have heard about loading a different ROM on the phone, but is this required for the Themes to work? If it is, how would I be able to tell which ROM's are compatible with my phone? Sorry guys, I'm new to this, just trying to pick up info as I go.
Most all of the other threads I have found are directed to other phone users who have installed a Hero ROM on a Tmobile G1 or something like that. I haven't been able to find anything specific for my device, so I'd appreciate any help you all can give. I'm sure its a pretty simple fix, any help?

I had the boot-looping problem on my rooted T-Mobile G2 Hero, and I fixed it by wiping everything from the recovery menu. I dunno if this will help you, since I'm not sure what the differences between Sprint, HTC and T-Mobile's version are, but it might be a good start. :S

thanks
thanks for the quick reply. As usual, I found a boatload of info right after I posted the original thread. I think what I needed to do was to download find and download a rom that is compatible with my version of Hero and android, then find a theme that I like, and then try to update with the theme.
That's about as far as I've got, I'm poring over every bit of info I can find, but its confusing as hell, and poor grammar makes it even harder to understand.

If you did a nandroid backup? boot into recovery and restore the backup, that should reset everything unless you flashed the skin and then did the backup? in that case download a rom for the cdma hero (guessing thats what you have?) rename it update.zip and put it onto your sdcard, boot into recovery and wipe EVERYTHING!, then flash your update.zip. only install themes for specific roms.

yea, had no problem with making the nandroid backup, and after the boot-loop, I pulled the battery and then booted in recovery to restore. No problems there.
I guess I just didn't get enough info before I started messing with the device. Thanks for the help tho.

[Q] I think i messed up =[

ok, well, i was in the process of rooting my hero, for the first time, and hit some problems, i read that for mine i had to create a gold card, i did everything as was said in the tutorials, and when everything was done, i tried a rooted application, and my phone wasn't rooted? so... then i just wanted to go back to the Android 2.1 i was using before through OTA update, and... it will download it, and go to install it, and on reboot, it gets stuck on the HTC screen.. i left it there all night figuring it was just going slow, and nothing.. any word on what i can do..? =[

Can you explain what you did, which guide you used, and which custom ROM you flashed?
that one with another one on how to create the gold card, i fianlly got Android 2.1 back on it thru the OTA update, all i had to do was flash the rom, but i really wanted to root it for the style of the custom roms, and i now use the 2.1 with pandahome, and am also wondering if there would be a way to change the style of the notification bar at the top with these..? sorry, i am a total noob when it comes to Android =[

Ok, now you are running 2.1, go into the hero dev forum, and click the sticky about rooting 2.1. That will guide you through installing a custom rom, using what is, in my experience, a much easier method for folk new to it.
Basically, do exactly as it says, and you'll end up on the blue care bear.
Now flash a zip file with custom rom
Remember to nandroid before flashing (all explained in the guide)
thank youu ^_^ will read it thoroughly before attempting it, lol, but until then, do you have a personal preference to which home replacement app to use? i'm currently using pandahome, but am having trouble location a nice variety of apps.. and do you have to root before you can change the boot screen?

Hmmm. I recommend Launcher Pro. I think that's what you're talking about.
To change the HTC Quietly Brilliant, you need root, then change the /system/media/bootscreen.zip file.
If you flash a custom ROM, you will likely get instructions for this.
i cannot thank enough. =] i'm sorry for the newb questions, i'm just extremely new to the Android in general =/ and will read as much as i can before attempting to root and flash. and will hopefully be able to help someone else in my situation one day! (^_^*)b
thank you soooo much dude? and is there a way a way to chance the to notification a really really wany one,
*Edit* and i think that was the ond i used, it said i hade to make a Gold Card for it, possible ls there wa wat to do i without it, and do you have a start wifger, and also point me to the sticky, thank you very much
okay, sorry for all the question, but it this the one to follow:

Follow the newbie guide in my sig - it should talk you through the entire process.
i got some probs in my other post if you wouldn't mind to help =[[[[[
O you-re on v2.1 of android. Follow this guide:
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
In response to your other questions:
1. LauncherPro (as advised by pulsar) is a brilliant launcher. My personal favourite.
2. On a custom rom you can change the bootscreen - see the theme section here or over at VillainROM for more bootscreens.
3. Yes you can theme the notification bar. You'll have to edit some files yourself or find someone who has done what you want. There are guide here on XDA in the theme section and you could also google it for more details.
4. Nandroid is a method of backing up your current phone's state. However, if you're going down the custom rom and root section then nandroiding before doing the process isn't strictly necessary. It is, however, still recommended and if the guide covers it I would do it!
Just as a point - I would NOT recommend following the Droid Eris guide you linked to before as this is not intended for use on your phone, or the one in my sig as that is for v1.5 of android. Use the one I have linked to above in this post.
do i have to download nandroid?

Included in the patched recovery image for you
I've got exactly same problem with factualpuddle.
I can't root. Seems like it have a problem in my SD card almost all people saying to me change the SD card to Kingston's SD card.
Do I really have to change my SD Card?
I've got 2.1 RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R_Radio_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed
Thanks in advance

Annoyingly the server is down and as I suspect it is actually someone else's server I expect there is nothing anyone here can do about it, keep trying now and again and it should come back fairly soon

[Q] What am i doing wrong?

OK First and foremost i would like to say Thank You XDA Developers, you have helped me figure out ALOT about my phone.
First lets just say I'm a noobie at this (aren't all beginners?) and i did try the search function but couldn't find anything . if someone does find, please link me too it, it will be greatly appreciated.
OK now back to the problem, the thing im trying to do is install a custom ROM onto my HTC Raider LTE from rogers, i have rooted/unlocked/ installed CWM recovery on it and my phone is S-ON. this is where things get difficult for me, i don't know where to go from here, i have already downloaded DarkRaider_v1.5.0 and virtuous_inquisition-v4.0.2 just to see which one is better but i do not know what to do with these files. i have booted from recovery and installed from zip but i guess that's not right cuz i tried it three time and had to re-install the stock rogers ROM 3 times due to it Boot looping. Thanks in advance and sorry for any annoyance i may have caused
You did a full wipe/factory reset before install the ROM?
Anyways, post this thread in the device's forum, where will help you much better.
Yea i did that and thanks i will move this thread

SD card required?

Hey, im new here, and completely new to the whole "custom rom flashing" thing.
I would like to get into rooting my phone and then installing a custom rom like resurrection for example, but I have a couple of questions.
1. Do I need an SD card in my phone, to be able to root my phone/install custom roms? or can I just use the phones internal 16gb memory?
2. Would someone be kind enough to point me to a guide to rooting/installing custom roms for complete newbies like myself? I have searched the forums, but theres so many threads about different stuff, like clockworkmod/odin/cyanogenmod etc, my head is completely boggled. I just don't know where to begin with any of it.
Cheers.
1) No.
2) Everything you need to know is in the Stickies.

1. No you cant root without an SD card? or No you don't need an SD card? elaborate please.
2. Nothing in that thread helps someone like me who is totally new. I don't know what any of it means. Surely there is a simple guide that explains exactly how to root your phone, without linking you to 7 other threads in the process? That's all I've found up until now.
This requires sdcard

This doesn't
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Thanks, thats what I was looking for.
One more thing, just so I dont make a mistake, could you tell me which kernel to download? my kernel version is 3.0.15-I9100BVLPB-CL310231
cheers.
Read the bit in bold read which says 'Help ! Which file do I use ?'. This short section answers your question exactly.
ok well i tried CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5-PROPER.zip and my phone no longer boots....
tried CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5.zip and I get the same thing, so im stuck now. great.
I can get into CWM recovery, but I have no idea how to copy the rom I want to use onto the phone when its in recovery mode. This is something that is just not explained anywhere
help?
Right. In order of importance:-
1) No bumping threads within 37 minutes. Not cool. This is not your personal tech support forum.
2) You're having problems. Why ? Who knows. We're not there looking over your shoulder so we have no idea exactly what you did. I suspect you're having problems because you are in too much of a hurry/took shortcuts & didn't do what was suggested immediately after your OP.
3) However...Given the situation you find yourself in, I recommend you do one of two things:-
A) If you are absolutely sure you have CWM Recovery & not Android recovery (I say this because if your phone isn't booting normally, that normally means the flash didn't work & normally CWM wouldn't be successfully installed either), follow whatever instructions the rom you're wanting to flash has.
Every single rom on here has flashing instructions, normally on the first post on the first page of the thread on here devoted to the rom. If you can't be bothered reading those, I can't help you.
or
B) Go to Samfirmware.com. Search for the firmware that was on your phone before you tried to root it. Download this firmware. Flash the firmware you download following the instructions here. If you also end up with a .dll file, bin it. You don't need it. This will give you a clean install of stock. From there, I strongly suggest you read the CFRoot thread very carefully before you attempt to root your phone again. I also strongly recommend you read the Stickies linked to above, so you have some sort of understanding around what's what with this phone.
If you don't, being a betting man, I'll wager there's a fair chance you'll find yourself in the situation you currently find yourself in again (best case scenario), or worst case you'll end up with a 135gm paperweight as many people have on here over the past few days.
It's all up to you now. Your phone's destiny is in your hands.
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
Sorry for bumping, I panicked a little when my phone wouldnt boot. I just expected it to work because I have done things like this in the past and never had problems. Im a pretty tech savvy person really, im just new to android.
I wish it was as simple as reading one thread, but there are dozens of different threads on how to root this phone, and different methods, its extremely confusing.
Im downloading the stock kernel now (300+mb for some reason, and its going to take over an hour to download)
Once I get my phone back to normal, I'll read through some more threads and try and get a better understanding on how to root my phone.
I had it rooted properly as the recovery mode stated CWM in the corner, I think the issue I had was not being able to copy the rom I wanted to use, onto the phone, because I dont have an SD card.
Anyway, thanks for the help, and fingers crossed I can at least get my phone to boot again.
Man, I've never come across anything so complicated in all my life lol.
Edit: Sorted! Flashed back to original kernel and its working as it was before I started. Thanks very much for your help mate, and at least now I know how to restore my phone if I mess it up again in the future.
just thought I would update this thread and say I finally accomplished what I wanted.
Incase anyone is wondering, this is what I did:
Restored my phone back to factory settings/firmware/kernel
Booted the phone up, and copied my rom of choice to the internal memory via USB connection, and enabled debug mode.
restarted in download mode and flashed cf-root kernel (ended up with bootloop)
went ahead and installed the rom via clockwork recovery (creating a backup first)
The phone now boots into the rom im using (Resurrection Remix)
So if anyone is a little worried by getting the bootloop (but can still get into clockwork recovery) try flashing your required rom. Your phone may boot fine with new rom anyway. Mine did.

[Q] [Help] Rooted Phone, Tried Istalling BeanStalk/Gapps, Phone Not Booting

So I'm very new to all of the rooting stuff. I got an HTC 4G LTE off Ebay just to use as sort of like a tablet. The firmware on the phone kinda sucks so I wanted to root it and go with a better version of Android that the bloatware-inflated version HTC provides. Not to mention updates are no longer supported.
I successfully rooted the phone with TWRP and followed the instructions to wipe the phone and such. This is where the instructions I found were kinda "off" and started using way too much lingo so I decided to wing-it a bit, thinking I had sort of understood it. I went to install, installed the BeanStalk and Gapps zip folders that are available in the the other section.
Rebooted my phone and it wouldn't go past the HTC boot logo... So I tried again. No luck.
I managed to get back in TWRP and I'm wondering what I need to do in order to get this bad boy to work. I checked the troubleshooting threads and found the section on boot-looping, but so I did the cache wipes it stated, selected "Factory Restore" and it rebooted back into TWRP. I'm not really sure what to do. Do I re-install the BeanStalk and Gapps zips, or am I missing something?
Thanks for any help.
If the phone is S-on you'll have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM itself. Hit the top link in my sig and read the entire guide. I think it will be quite useful to you:thumbup:

Need ROM for HTC Desire 626s (T-Mobile)

So, to start, I rooted my phone, unlocked the bootloader, and flashed TWRP for the recovery.
I did all of this so that I could prepare it for CyanogenMod. I made the mistake of not backing up my data (I seriously, seriously regret this decision now) and wiped my phone so that I could install Cyanogen, only to find out that there is no Cyanogen build available at this time for my phone model. I've looked all over google and bing and couldn't find one.
So I tried to find a stock rom to install. Screw it, I can debloat it myself if it's rooted, right? Nope. No stock roms. Sorry. Tried the RUU, and the one for my carrier says it's not the correct one, the metroPCS one stops halfway through the flashing process before it decides to tell me the same thing, and I didn't try the sprint RUU. This is driving me up the wall and all I want is a single flashable rom to work with so that I have some kind of functioning phone again.
Any help is appreciated.
Update: This thread helped me restore my phone to factory state, and I was able to re-reoot from there.
