I was wondering if it is possible to port the X10 ROM to Hero. Since HTC has pushed the release of 2.1 for Hero to the 16th. It would be nice to play around with the X10 ROM while waiting for the official 2.1
That would be unlikely, as the X10 uses a WVGA screen resolution while the Hero uses HVGA. This means the image assets would likely need to be scaled down AND reconfigured to the Hero's different aspect ratio.
Frankly, it would probably take months to get it working semi-decently. That's why there's no port of other WVGA roms (such as Desire) to Hero.
There's also the different hardware to take into account, not just processing speed (X10 is a lot faster) but the drivers. It's easier to port from HTC devices to other HTC devices that are similar (eg: Eris, Legend and Hero are very alike in hardware) since they'll usually use the same hardware drivers and have the same buttons
Hope that helps. I'd also like to try out the X10's interface, but it would be more likely on the Nexus One or Desire, and at the moment I doubt many people would like to go back to the X10's Cupcake Android build (2.1 is coming eventually).

If I'm not mistaken HTC's Sense UI is build on top of Android 1.5 Cupcake.
It struck me it would be nice to the the HTC UI on top on the new 2.0 Donut build.
I wondered what are the thoughts of the people on this forum on this.
Does anybody think HTC will do this and will they do it for the Hero as well as newer HTC hardware?
If HTC don't do this for the Hero would anybody else be able to? e.g. MoDaCo?
Apologies if some of my comments/questions are a bit naive or uneducated but I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Some correction:
The new Android SDK version is 1.6, not 2.0
1.6's name is Donut, Donut is not 2.0
One would hope that HTC will update the Hero firmware to Android 1.6 and beyond for as long as the hardware can take it.
If not, I'm sure MoDaCo and others will be playing with this...
well at least the next TWO android updates shouldn't be any problem for the hero and i strongly believe that HTC will provide the updates.
I mean they are doing the same with the new WiMo devices: Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 will both get official WM 6.5 updates.
I do believe that the latest MoDaco Rom has components from Donut. Not the new features, just some of the performance stuff.
It's almost an impossible task to get Sense running on Donut without it being sourced from HTC. For one, we don't have the kernel source to even make a donut build. Then you have the problem of getting htc's framework to play nice with the updated 1.6 framework. Even if you do get the htc framework (for Hero) to run on top of 1.6, Sense is still built atop 1.5, so it's no like you'll be able to use global search from Rosie, you'd get a bunch of forcecloses on settings and other key places.
We'll just have to wait for htc to either release 1.6 sense for Hero or use Tattoo's 1.6 sense and port it to Hero, by the way, anybody have a dump yet?

Thanks for the correction.
And thanks everyone for your thoughts - I'd be excited to see HTC bring 1.6 to the hero.
Well afer seeing this link:
http://www.htcheroblog.com/2009/09/25/sprint’s-htc-hero-to-launch-with-android-1-6/
which says that Sprint's Hero will already have Android 1.6, obviously running similar (if not the same) Sense UI, I don't see why it should take too long for us European Hero owners to have Sense UI smoothly running on the new 1.6 firmware. I am quite hopeful.
Tattoo is what you're looking for. It's a brighter version of Hero (grey instead of black) but has the widgets and overall appeal. Supports native QVGA resolution. Built on Donut from the start.
I'd like to figure out how to get it on a plain Donut build though.

There is already tattoo bootable port for hero youd have to unodex the whole build and port particular parts to 1.6 or change over the whole framework.apk after unodex'ing to support our 160dpi LCD screens over the tattoos 120dpi screen
gimme a second ill grab the link for this guys thread that ported tattoo for hero the rapidshare links are on page two youll have to fastboot his build its not just an update.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=564984
hes already got it going on the hero im working on mytouch(magic) and Dream right now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566501
I have a Kaiser and have Tattoo working just fine. I think it came from the Sapphire threads. Then I have 120 dpi on a QVGA screen as well. Still, I ran it at Hero's resolution and the only thing I could see was that the images were not scaled but it functioned correctly (like the slider bar was cutting off the Phone button on the home screen) so that should be easy to fix. I don't know what you mean about unodexing as I believe that they either don't need it or at the least you can just sign the file back once you've swapped images.
I'd like to know what dependencies it has with the fun of tweaking Hero is rolling over to Tattoo. I'd like SenseUI on a bare Donut to make it a little more stable.
yeah without a doubt we'll be seeing 1.6 + sense in the near future.
the android 1.6 demo suggests that android cupcake doesnt support cdma, donut will. so for the sprint hero to run at all they'll need donut.
hopefully we'll see the donut come out of the oven in the near future
I've got nothing but failed attempts at getting Hero on Cupcake and Tattoo on Donut native ROMs. Maybe someone more experienced can figure out the dependency hell involved. I don't have a MyTouch but I know my way around the ROMs. The only thing you should need is the /system folder from Tattoo and mod boot.img's init script. Or are you having issues getting Donut to run at all?
twittter
if you subsribe to htc on twitter, they usually send out updates, and from what i have been getting we will be gettign 1.6 for sure on the hero.. they just wont give us a when!
I thought I'd ask you X10 devs/power users this:
Out of the X10 (X10a) and Motorola Milestone, which do you think is the closest to offering fully custom ROMs including custom kernels, cyanogenmod ports etc?
I understand both of these have locked bootloaders which are making this hard.
I'm looking to get a pretty quick Android device with a high-res non-Pentile screen and my choices seem limited only to devices with locked bootloaders or some other flaw... it'd be nice to at least have a bit of future-proofing.
If neither of these devices can be upgraded by the community, is it better to bet on SonyEriccson or Motorola for long term support?
From what i understand the Motorola bootloaders are "perfect" in that they are unhackable (in so much as anything can be un-hackable, incredibly impractical would be more accurate i suppose) whereas the X10 bootloader is hackable and i believe it has actually been hacked at this point, but there are issues with the kernal at the moment.
So the prospects for the x10 are good, its no guarantee but fingers crossed
Thanks for the reply.
It's a pity Motorola went that way with the Milestone (and some other recent phones). So on the one hand Motorola is likely to beat SonyEricsson in bringing out Froyo, but then with the X10 it sounds like the community might be able to step in if these kernel issues can be sorted.
Love the screen res on the X10 and Milestone by the way - I'd go for a galaxy or N1 but their Pentile screens are a step backwards, especially at a time when competition is bringing out its "retina" display. Small text is very readable indeed on the X10 while fuzzier on anything with a Pentile AMOLED.
Here's hoping the X10 gets future updates, one way or another.
I've been thinking of trading my HTC Tattoo for a Xperia X10 mini (maybe pro) what do you guys have to say?
I'd like to know what are tha main advantages/disadvantages of the mini if possible
Thanks in advance,
K.
hello,
it depends from your expectations...
why do you want exchange HTC Tattoo?
do you have any problems with it? because your phone has almost similar parameters, x10 mini has slightly better HW specifications, specially 5Mpx photo camera with autofocus and led flash is very good, better processor, but smaller battery capacity, in real life battery holds 2 days max. My record is 3 days but it was on business trip and I didn't used mobile data because of rooming, on other side I used GPS navigation and photo camera lot so it was a very good performance.

Thanks for your reply : )
Well my major factor for choosing one is that it's one of the phones I can afford on a contract (selling my Tattoo would get me the cash needed for it) and the fact that I can have Android 2.x with working camera and fm radio (if the x10 does have one xD)
I like my Tattoo (because of its size mainly) and the mini boasts of being the smallest Android so it doesn't seem like a bad change.
My main problem with my Tattoo is that HTC dropped us at Android 1.6 without caring because of the release of the Wildfire, and because of that xda devs never were able to get their hands on camera/radio 2.x drivers therefore one has to choose between camera (crappy) and radio or 2.x apps support. Really ungrateful position to be in.

in this case, x10 mini is good for you
Go for the Mini mate
The Mini is the best phone I've had so far and believe me I've had a LOT... you wont regret buying it (it won an award for being the best phone for 2010 and 2011 which you probably know) its on android 2.1, it runs games fast @ 43FPS! for example runs Angry birds great but on the Hero which I had it lagged (23FPS on the Hero) and PSX4droid runs pretty great too =]
I have Apps2SD enabled, installed about 70+ apps/games (most of the big games work perfectly e.g. Pocket Legends, Fifa 10, Fruit Ninja etc) whereas normally without Apps2SD you wouldn't be able to get more than 4-5 big games on it.. so yeah
Do the wise thing and get the damn thing!!
PS. The disadvantage is that it has no Multi-touch but afaik that may change soon
I can also vouch for the x10 mini pro, and I too came from having a tattoo. The x10 is as good as technically and id argue better than the tattoo and I can tell you I wouldnt be writing this on my tatoo but I am happily on my mini pro

I believe HTC Sense requires quite a bit of OS integration. Maybe even more than what Sony Ericsson uses with their Rachael interface.
Also, HTC has claimed that Sense 3.0 has certain hardware specs (most likely available RAM) that had to be met. That was the reason why they didn't update Sense for older HTC hardware such as the Supersonic/EVO 4G (although XDA devs have already come up with custom ROMs for the EVO 4G that have Sense 3.0).
There should be 3rd-party launchers, home screens, lock screens, widgets, themes, etc. that can be used to simulate the look and feel of Sense 3.0 without having to create some kind of custom ROM image. Have you tried that route?
Dear all
I started with my Android experience about two years ago (a little more I guess) with the HTC Desire.
Now I have a HTC Desire HD (was lucky enough to win one) which is in use.
So, that means I only have real "experience" with HTC phones. Everything else is either from the phone shop looking at it and touching it for a few moments, but not really using it or the internet.
While I like both - the HTC Desire and Desire HD - I find the HD jus the maximum of size I would like to cope with. The Desire was in my humble opinion perfectly sized. Not too big, not too small.
Now, both phones will not see any updates (the HTC Desire is now somewhere in 2.2 and the HD got 2.3.5 or something) anytime soon, certainly not 4.x.
Is there a phone out there (I will not limit myself to HTC) around the size of the HTC Desire (3.7 inch display) which will get 4.x?
My search on the internet revealed many interesting ones, but all of them are at least the size of the HD (most of the time even larger!). Is there really no android phone out there with that size? Are they all getting newer AND bigger?
Before you ask: Yes, modding is an option. However, I was just unlucky and surely stupid enough that I can not manage to get CM working on the HTC Desire. While I think I managed to root it, the loading of the new mod fails and I get back to stock all the time...but that is a subject of another time
Thanks a lot
Regards
scheuri
Hmm... i believe i would just wait and see what comes out. The release of Android 4.0 devices just began and a lot of new devices are coming. So for right now, i would just stay with what you have till some new phones are released.
Please hit the thank you button if i helped!
Maybe picking up an unlocked Samsung/Google Nexus S is a possibility?
We have one here and I'm impressed with how fast and stable it is with Android 4.0. Plus, as a Nexus, it keeps on being supported with the latest/greatest updates as Google makes them available.
