If I'm not mistaken HTC's Sense UI is build on top of Android 1.5 Cupcake.
It struck me it would be nice to the the HTC UI on top on the new 2.0 Donut build.
I wondered what are the thoughts of the people on this forum on this.
Does anybody think HTC will do this and will they do it for the Hero as well as newer HTC hardware?
If HTC don't do this for the Hero would anybody else be able to? e.g. MoDaCo?
Apologies if some of my comments/questions are a bit naive or uneducated but I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Some correction:
The new Android SDK version is 1.6, not 2.0
1.6's name is Donut, Donut is not 2.0
One would hope that HTC will update the Hero firmware to Android 1.6 and beyond for as long as the hardware can take it.
If not, I'm sure MoDaCo and others will be playing with this...
well at least the next TWO android updates shouldn't be any problem for the hero and i strongly believe that HTC will provide the updates.
I mean they are doing the same with the new WiMo devices: Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 will both get official WM 6.5 updates.
I do believe that the latest MoDaco Rom has components from Donut. Not the new features, just some of the performance stuff.
It's almost an impossible task to get Sense running on Donut without it being sourced from HTC. For one, we don't have the kernel source to even make a donut build. Then you have the problem of getting htc's framework to play nice with the updated 1.6 framework. Even if you do get the htc framework (for Hero) to run on top of 1.6, Sense is still built atop 1.5, so it's no like you'll be able to use global search from Rosie, you'd get a bunch of forcecloses on settings and other key places.
We'll just have to wait for htc to either release 1.6 sense for Hero or use Tattoo's 1.6 sense and port it to Hero, by the way, anybody have a dump yet?

Thanks for the correction.
And thanks everyone for your thoughts - I'd be excited to see HTC bring 1.6 to the hero.
Well afer seeing this link:
http://www.htcheroblog.com/2009/09/25/sprint’s-htc-hero-to-launch-with-android-1-6/
which says that Sprint's Hero will already have Android 1.6, obviously running similar (if not the same) Sense UI, I don't see why it should take too long for us European Hero owners to have Sense UI smoothly running on the new 1.6 firmware. I am quite hopeful.
Tattoo is what you're looking for. It's a brighter version of Hero (grey instead of black) but has the widgets and overall appeal. Supports native QVGA resolution. Built on Donut from the start.
I'd like to figure out how to get it on a plain Donut build though.

There is already tattoo bootable port for hero youd have to unodex the whole build and port particular parts to 1.6 or change over the whole framework.apk after unodex'ing to support our 160dpi LCD screens over the tattoos 120dpi screen
gimme a second ill grab the link for this guys thread that ported tattoo for hero the rapidshare links are on page two youll have to fastboot his build its not just an update.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=564984
hes already got it going on the hero im working on mytouch(magic) and Dream right now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566501
I have a Kaiser and have Tattoo working just fine. I think it came from the Sapphire threads. Then I have 120 dpi on a QVGA screen as well. Still, I ran it at Hero's resolution and the only thing I could see was that the images were not scaled but it functioned correctly (like the slider bar was cutting off the Phone button on the home screen) so that should be easy to fix. I don't know what you mean about unodexing as I believe that they either don't need it or at the least you can just sign the file back once you've swapped images.
I'd like to know what dependencies it has with the fun of tweaking Hero is rolling over to Tattoo. I'd like SenseUI on a bare Donut to make it a little more stable.
yeah without a doubt we'll be seeing 1.6 + sense in the near future.
the android 1.6 demo suggests that android cupcake doesnt support cdma, donut will. so for the sprint hero to run at all they'll need donut.
hopefully we'll see the donut come out of the oven in the near future
I've got nothing but failed attempts at getting Hero on Cupcake and Tattoo on Donut native ROMs. Maybe someone more experienced can figure out the dependency hell involved. I don't have a MyTouch but I know my way around the ROMs. The only thing you should need is the /system folder from Tattoo and mod boot.img's init script. Or are you having issues getting Donut to run at all?
twittter
if you subsribe to htc on twitter, they usually send out updates, and from what i have been getting we will be gettign 1.6 for sure on the hero.. they just wont give us a when!

Hey Guys,
I happen to stumble upon some websites today that say Android 1.6 is now released. Is it true? Any ideas if Hero could be upgraded to this newer OS?
The SDK has launched so developers can beigin to dev some new apps around the new framework and run Donut in the VM.
The update is looking set to roll out to devices in October, not sure how long it will take to get to us hero users??
Would be posible in no time with a good chef on board, the G1 and magic seem to be benefiting from certain Donut updates as we speak

The upcoming "Hero" on Sprint will have a Donut-based OS (Android 1.6). This is self-evident since Sprint is a CMDA network, and Donut is the first iteration of the OS to support CDMA. I would imagine that since the GSM Hero and the CDMA "Hero" have very similar specs, with the exception of the radio, it shouldn't take a competent chef too long to cook up a GSM version of the ROM.

Dave
The SDK was released meaning you can directly develop against it.
if you go to

you can watch a vid with the new features.
Hello
jus wondering what the diff in for example OS like cupcake (1.5 yes?) and donut (1.6) is with respect to the ROMs...
The Hero is on 1.5, are other android phones also on 1.5?.....is there like some guide on this stuff.....can we upgrade our OS (officially) to newer ones or we will have to do with OS 1.5 on hero and jus update ROMs?
Thanks.
My questions are:
1) What are the specialties on the Donut compare to the Hero's ROM;
2) Would it be possible to have the Hero's theme that everyone loves so much on donut;
3) I've seen windows mobile as well as the Iphone 2G having the Hero's theme. So what would make donut be the "next big thing" compare to the Hero.
Donut is Android 1.6. So no big differences. Your hero will be just the same with the update, but with among other things an upgraded Market app.

I don't think you understand what donut is and how HTC's programs run on the android platform. but no problem
Donut is the name for the 1.6 release of Android. HTC's programs including the interface run on top of the android system. All HTC need to do is test that all the programs run on the new platform version, if they do, whoopie do and release a rom which includes the 1.6 android version. If not (there could be a lot of differences) then they need to update the programs that do not work and then release.
Remember the hero stuff runs on top of 1.5 and will run on top of 1.6 (possibly with a few coding changes). It just takes a little time.
Anybody heard any rumors about a release date or has seen a beta?

I am just curious... did you REALLY see an iPhone 2G running HTC SenseUI??? Can you show me where??
Also, the next big thing, will be Sony erricson s go at android, they have done a custom UI also. Google it,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGkzrjs-Ui0
so it turn out to be, by upgrading to the donut, you'l have just a "regular" android as stated on the link
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/01/do...-download-come-and-get-them-while-theyre-hot/
but i do have the confident that someone is building a donut into Hero's ROM as we speak.
And SE's UI, named Rachel

It's just a theme. Seems like a waste of time to me... I mean, if I had an iPhone, I would much rather stick with the default iPhone layout than use this "Sense UI" homescreen, which really just looks like it adds extra steps to doing anything on your phone.

There were rumoured to be two updates coming from HTC, the one we had just recently and a major update in October.
Was rumour back then and remains so
Hey all,
I'm having the moment vs hero debate with myself that a few others have posted threads about on here. I'm wondering if there's a good chance that htc sense will be lifted out of the hero rom and available for install on other devices (read: the moment) similar to how manila was on windows mobile devices. I understand the hardware differences, to me Sense UI will be either a game breaker or a game maker.
Thoughts?
Try asking someone on a dev forum for the Moment!
Regards,
Dave
Don't think that's gonna happen sense is from HTC and is not free to duplicate.
Also not saying the moment isn't as good or even better then the hero but if you'd run sense on the moment it might be very lagging.
Since even if it's made it won't be optimized for the moment (since htc won't make it anyhow)
Old thread but thought i would clarify..
There was some interest in getting sense working on the sph-m900 samsung moment... but that has pretty much died down since we seem to be very close to a fully working 2.1 rom...
I was wondering if it is possible to port the X10 ROM to Hero. Since HTC has pushed the release of 2.1 for Hero to the 16th. It would be nice to play around with the X10 ROM while waiting for the official 2.1
That would be unlikely, as the X10 uses a WVGA screen resolution while the Hero uses HVGA. This means the image assets would likely need to be scaled down AND reconfigured to the Hero's different aspect ratio.
Frankly, it would probably take months to get it working semi-decently. That's why there's no port of other WVGA roms (such as Desire) to Hero.
There's also the different hardware to take into account, not just processing speed (X10 is a lot faster) but the drivers. It's easier to port from HTC devices to other HTC devices that are similar (eg: Eris, Legend and Hero are very alike in hardware) since they'll usually use the same hardware drivers and have the same buttons
Hope that helps. I'd also like to try out the X10's interface, but it would be more likely on the Nexus One or Desire, and at the moment I doubt many people would like to go back to the X10's Cupcake Android build (2.1 is coming eventually).
Hi... Can we get new Sense 3.0 (or Sense 3.5) on Legend?
Sense 3.0 has more function than Sense 2.1. It is more beautiful.
I know someone make sense 2.1 on legend. I think sense 3.0 can also be ported on legend.
I hope that it gets ported from the htc sensation or the htc pyramid. But i don't know if it's possible.
From what I've heard Sense 3.0 needs allot of performance and the legend isn't powerful enough, but hey i could be wrong lets just let the devs decide

Damn these 2 year contracts. Also, I spy another stupidly off topic thread coming up. And we'll get Sense 3.0 tomorrow

Can't wait
this is how the company makes money
People have this running on hdpi htc devices like the desire. However unless htc releases this for a lower spec phone i doubt we'll get it.
I wouldn't count on it.
If we can convert the sense 3.0 from HDPI to MDPI maybe we can have sense 3.0 on legend.
I doubt it, but even if we did it would be really laggy. Maybe we'll get features from Sense 3.0 for ogo2's Gingerbread Sense ROM like they do on the Desire? They have the lockscreen among other Sense 3.0 features. That ROM isn't even fully working yet so maybe that'll be a suggestion for the future.

Don't forget the HDPI version is already resized...and without (maybe even with) heavy optimizations I doubt the Ardeno 200 has a computing power / consumption ratio that would enable you to have Sense 3 and some reasonable durability...
before you talk about sense 3 wait for the final sense 2.1 rom for legend.
Ya, Sense 2.1 Beta 2 is out, and its amazing ROM. IDK if Sense 3.0 would be possible to port.
Does Sense 3.0 comes to the Wildfire S?
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
Unless it unlocks the CPU to run on 1,2 GHz it won't
I think sense 3.0 roms are to large for the Legend
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA Premium App
I don't think it's a matter of size.... once resized to MDPI and optimized most of resources (images) would have been nearly 75% smaller than "originals" from HDPI
