Can't believe no-on has said this already... but you need to read the Wiki and do lots of searching / reading through the forum.
It's good that you don't want to brick your device. Research the topic by reading what is already there... no need to ask the same questions again
The WIKI will explain bootloaders and flashing to you. link in the brown bar at the top of the page, it says XDA-Wiki, click it look for the picture of the hermes device and click it. There is a wealth of information there for everyone's use.
As far as what functionality you will have with what rom - read the first post in the rom thread. The cooker will usually have a detailed list of included/removed items from the rom. Only you can decide which rom is the best for you, everyone uses their device differently and as such everyone has different ideas of what a good rom is.
Lastly, if you don't understand anything read before you start to flash. The Hermes isn't as forgiving as other devices when flashing and you could very easily ruin your device if you don't take some standard precautions. The awesome people in this forum have come up with tools to help you recover from just about every form of bricking, but nothing can save you from not having a plan ahead of time.
I suggest after you read the Wiki, that you start with the Olipro Hard-SPL before you flash anything else to your phone. And as always ask yourself why you need to upgrade your device. If the answer isn't substantial and you aren't prepared to lose the device due to a bad flash or just plain bad luck you shouldn't flash. Again if you are prepared ahead of time flashing is relatively safe, but if you jump in without knowing what you should, you risk ruining your device.

do not claim anything that isn't even your own experience
for example you copypasted this bull**** from another forum post (and which post I've already answered):
"Flashing:
A completely un-documented process. The PocketPC flashed with this tool will literaly be the worst PocketPC in the world (at-aleast at the moment)
1) no warranty, no way to go back
2) the only ROM available are AP3 and AP4. None can put a new ROM on it!
3) no official ROMs anymore
4) no "self cooked" ROMs anymore"

The bull**** was mine but Carty, I've put a SMILEY at the end!
Without smiley is to too "strong" for the Team Effort! To be honest and without using the smiley the complete concept is "It was anxiously awaited and the TEAM released a quick first ROM , but some things are still in developing stage
.....
.....
.....
Delelopers are working to address the problems ,and if you want to have more informations or give your contribution: forum.xda-developers.com, ATHENA section. Now the AP4 flashing process is explained, and CMONEX told us they are releasing the tool to go back!
Carty please, we are on INTERNET, do you remember? Hypertext, WWW, LINKS....
Give the bull**** to the bull**** owners and give to the TEAM the space they deserve for their hard work!
This is a developers forum and they are developing and supporting their ROM. In any case I will suggest to add value to you article, giving some LINKS to the readers!
I was just about to quote sergiopi's reply
Thank you, for the complete answer and the really interesting schedule

He had some questions which were valid from a developers point and not from and end users point of view. The Olinex has answered these points and you have quoted them out of context and without the smiley which, as he points out, completely changes the meaning of the quotes. You also have tried to make it look like they are your comments and the whole point of this thread seems to be to get more visitors to a website no one has heard of or cares about. Go back to your day job and stop talking cr*p.

Though you have mentioned here that this "review" is a round-up of existing posts in these forums, in the actual article you have given the impression that these views are yours. That is incorrect.
A good way of giving credit to the original authors is to clearly state the author's handle and put his/her observations in double quotes. e.g. you could have stated as follows:
As observed by Serigiopi (a senior member of the xda-developer forum)
"Flashing:
A completely un-documented process. The PocketPC flashed with this tool will literaly be the worst PocketPC in the world (at-aleast at the moment)

3) no official ROMs anymore
4) no "self cooked" ROMs anymore"
Last but not the least, do not change any words or smileys in quoted text as that can convey a different impression to what the author intended (as it has done in this case).
Ok, no offense guys, Ive taken that part completely...
Regards,
Carty..

Attention All New Users

Dear New Users,
Before Posting any thread or requesting anything, please do the following:
1. Read the stickey it has everything you need to know about how to flash your Gene without bricking it.
2. DO NOT FLASH A SIM LOCKED GENE. First SIM unlock your Gene and then flash it. As of now, I do not know any one in this forum who provides this service. But please note even if someone provides it, it will most likely not be a FREE SERVICE.
So Again, SEARCH BEFORE YOU POST
I updated the post #3 in unlocking tutorial thread. Users may skit FAQ etc, but the real tutorial will be readed by sure by everyone

SIM Unlocking
If you want to SIM unlock your Gene, please visit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=487710
Please note that this guy is not doing a charity, he charges for SIM unlock.
You give him what he wants, he gets the code, gives you quotation, you submit the money and get the code.
This FYI only (I don't get commission from him )
There is also another member tupisdin (see told you I don't get commission) who does sim unlocking (sorry for those looking for free lunch, chargeable again).

If you have the Original Product Code yes .
You can flash relevant stock rom or branded rom .

You flash a full firmware to either match your existing or a later one for an upgrade .
You pick CSC to match area of phone use .

Could anyone plz make a pro/con list of rooting or not rooting?!?

how can i find this?
Original product code on the box under the battery .
Rooting opens up the OS to give more user rights means user can backup full rom and use programs that require root . But until you need root dont bother as it invalidates warranty though root can be removed .

Simple Answer: The first rule of rooting: if you have to ask why you should do it, don't do it.
Complex Answer: As JJEgan stated, it gives you more freedom to do what you want to do. For example manipulating system files (for themeing, firewalls, adblocking, etc), flashing custom roms and more. But with this freedom comes great responsibility. Since you can do anything, you can do anything wrong thus damaging your phone or bricking it (making it unusable). And by that we arrive again at the first rule of rooting...
On a side note: please don't take this the wrong way but you shouldn't hijack a thread that has nothing to do with your question. Search the forums if it has been asked already and then post in the appropriate thread or open a new one.

[Q] Unlocking Nokia Lumia 710

Hello guys!
I need a bit of help on unlocking my Nokia Lumia to install XAP files.
I know that there are some cool ROMs to install that already have what I want installed, but I don't know how to install them. There is a downloader app for my Lumia that works with the os.nb file (I think), so if I download the ROM I can install it with this app?
Also, I want to do it by myself. I've searched on the WP7 chef central but I didn't found anything that I could understand, and I'm not a newbie when it comes to modding OSes (a past in Android teached me lots of things). If someone could point me what do I need to do to unlock my phone it would be awesome.
Here are some things that I didn't understood yet:
What are the DONOR_SLDR and what I need to to with it?
How to "install" the FullUnlock using OS builder?
How can I remove languages from ROM?
How do I remove stock apps, and add other ones to the ROM (like Bluetooth share, which is pretty much all I want!)
There is some way to add more color schemes to customization?
Please spare me if these questions had already been answered somewhere else, I've tried to search for them but, like I said, found nothing that I could understand. And thanks in advance!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102114
You can check my ROM there. It has all the features you want in it. And I've provided links to videos which show you how to easily unlock and flash the rom to your phone.
If you want to cook your own rom there are a couple of guides in the Chef Central and WP7 Development forums. You can find help there
Quick question: will I need to re-add the activation code? Or it will work out-of-the-box?
Your ROM looks great, I just need to know if I'll need the activation code and I think I'll stay with it.
You can easily get the key from Microsoft through their online chat facility. And yes, all custom rom's after installation will require you to add it. There are few workarounds but it's alot easier to just get key from MICROSOFT, get it once and you can use it whenever you want to install a custom rom again
