I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
I woke up yesturday morning looked at my phone and noticed that the little icon you see when you plug in a headset was appearing.
I thought that it was quite strange condering i never use a headset so i did the obvious thing and plugged a headset in and removed it, yet it stayed there.
I've tried everything, cleaning it, moving the jack around, i even installed a new rom and it's still stuck in headset mode.
I'm guessing it must be hardware related due to the fact that i did reinstall the rom.
If i slowly insert the jack of my headset into the 3.5mm port, there is a point where the icon changes to display just headphones.
Anyone have any ideas because it's really bugging me having to use a headset to make calls all the time?
Unfortunately, it may mean that your Hero is soon for repair.
I had this problem - instead of using the headset, you can also use it set to speakerphone as a work around for now.
For me, a week later the mini USB port only allowed charging, not USB disk or sync and was told it was a circuit problem. Sent it away and all problems have disappeared with change of the mini-usb "flex" inside the handset.
The first tech support guy said this indicated that there was an electrical contact inside the 3.5mm jack which may have got some dirt or water that was completing the circuit and making the phone think there was a jack in there the whole time. Try visually inspecting it and ?remove any dirt with high pressure air? Just an idea.
Good luck.
Did you try one of the toggleheadset apps yet? (http://code.google.com/p/toggleheadset2/ or http://code.google.com/p/toggleheadset/)
It's a far shot, as you already changed your ROM, but you might want to try it nevertheless.
I have contacted HTC but haven't heard anything yet.
The second app you posted allows me to turn it off, however for it to work properly during phone calls i have to make sure i answer the call and then turn headset mode off.
Thanks for showing me the that app as it will help me use the phone whilst wating for HTC to reply haha.
Thank you very much elmicha. Toggleheadset is a life saver app.
My HTC Hero always stucked up in headset mode if I ever plug in the headset unless it is restarted. For a long time I had been scared to plug in the headset to ever listen music coz I'll have to restart it to bring it out of headset mode.
I tried the toggleheadset2 which is available in market but it didn't work for HTC hero. Fortunately, the toggleheadset widget worked.
Thank you very much guys. XDA rocks!!!

Is there anything for a more recent build? Having a similar issue on DLEV 2.3.4 on an Infuse...
Reinstall with RUU should fix this
Hi,
I had similar issue, headset not working and device not recognised by usb. The installation of ice cream sandwich had screwed my phones drivers such that even older roms that used to work never worked again. Please install an original HTC RUU after a complete wipe, solves all problems.

I posted this over at PPCPassion too, and someone suggested I try here...just really looking for help. Here's what happened. I woke up, and my phone (TMo XDA with PPCTechs 64MB upgrade, 128SD card), which had been left on all night, doesn't work as follows:
-When I dial a call, I can't hear the other phone ringing through the speaker...and when the person answers, I can't hear them...nor can they hear me. The phone indicates 'Dialing' and then the duration time starts when they answer
-When I get a call, my phone rings, but when I answer, same as above, they can't hear me and I don't hear them
-But the speaker and mic DO work...I tested this using a voice memo.
-Also, same symptoms whether using spkr phone on or off
Any thoughts on this? It 'fixed itself' yesterday after I performed a back up (I was going to do a hard reset/restore). THen today same problem. Did the backup just to see if somehow that solved it, but this time it's not working. Before I do the hard reset I want to see if anyone else has any thoughts.
I really dont want to have to send this to TMo since my unit has 64MB from the upgrade...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. FWIW I'm not a developer so if you recommend technical things please explain them thoroughly :0
And THANK YOU in advance!

Had the same thing happen to me. Thought of hardware failure at first, tried similar things and came to similar conclusions. Tried SD Backup, then hard reset. Not solved. Înteresting that during backup one dll file seemed to be stuck (think it was a dll, although dont remember name).
In my case solved itself when I remapped the RECORD action to the left button. Very strange......
Any permanent solution or reason would be welcome....

How did you go - the symptoms are the same as dropping pin 19 to ground (for a car kit), you lose speaker and built in mic so make sure 19 isn,t shorting with 18, Steve
Speaker & Microphone not working
I encounterd the same problem - from one day to the other mic and speaker stopped working. When I connect power to the device using a USB sync cable mic and speaker are turned on again. It really seems that the XDA is set into car mode. :?
Assuming that pins 18/19 were shorted, I have cleaned the connector but this didn't help.
There's another thing which has happened to people: it appears the connector for the headphones isn't all that sturdy, so after a while the device thinks the connector always stays in. Not sure that would explain this behaviour, but just thought I'd mention it.
Same problem happened to me... help
How do you solve this problem? I have tried to plug and unplug the headset and did a reset... still the only thing that comes out of the speaker is the ring. The only want I can use the phone or hear anything is to use the hands free... Please help.

Fortunately, my device was still under warranty. I had to return it to O2.

Hi
My Qtek seems to be similarly stuck in the headphone mode. Any idea how to get out of it? Would removing the headphone socket entirely help?

Before anybody says use the search......
I have used it, but did not turn up anything on this although I am sure its here somewhere
I plugged in the wrong cable into my XDA a while ago (Medion PDA car cable)
This blew the fuse in the lighter fitting on the cable.....but......
Ever since this happened, my XDA is broke. I can use it as a Pocket PC. I can use it for email and internet but I cannot use it for phone calls.
The unit seems like it is constantly on speakerphone or handsfree. I try making a call and can hear nothing, either thru the handsfree speaker OR thru the main ear speaker. Whoever I call cannot her me either!
Then, I tried the headest in it. Now...I can hear the call, but whoever I call cannot hear anything!
Is this a hardware problem or a software problem???
Its really annoying me as the XDA itself is in great condition but just won't work
Try inderting and removing the headset several times or poke a cocktail stick making sure it doesnt break, this is a known problem with xda and headphone socket, it becomes jammed in closed position. I have also used a spray can of "switchgear", this is a lubricant for switches and other electronic things.
wow! that was a quick reply
thanks a lot
i have tried that but still no luck. i also tried the cocktail stick.
i'll get a can of oil in the morning like wd40 or something as you descibe.
in the meantime any more suggestions are welcome
Same Problem!
Hey, I am having the exact same problem with my Qtek 1010.. everytime i try use the phone it stays permanently on speakerphone and i can't hear anything... did u ever manage to fix the problem? thanks alot
No.
I never did have any success with it after. Ended up scrapping it
try blowing hard on the audio jack
been battling with this all day...
what fixed it is pluggin/unplugging the headset several times then removing the wired headset plug and blowing real hard inside the jack hole where u plug ur headset...common problem it seems, due to a hardware switch inside being stuck fooling the phone to think your headset is plugged wheb it is not.don't know if the rom can "sensitize" the phone to this problem i.e. make it more prone...
Guys,
Here's a new one on me. New Cingy ROM w/1.40 radio installed yesterday.
Most of day reinstalling apps. No biggie. This AM had the unit out of the USB cradle and ON the HTC charger cable.
Noticed that I had no or VERY low sounds. Ring in, screen clicks (set to loud), everything I tried resulted in little, if any, sound. Ahhhh !!!
Cleared and reinstalled the OS. Restore from yesterday backup on hold. STILL no sounds.
Now what ? Take it back to Cingy ? Hmmm rather not waste the time doing that. Searched the Forum. Stopped the startup animation. STILL no sound.
Pulled it off charger to play around with sounds screens some more. BINGO, sound was BACK.
Restored my backup. All except this AM's install is back. Sounds work fine --- UNTIL I plug in the charger, then they're gone again.
Anyone else experienced this ???
MUST be a new "feature" from the ROM gurus at AT&T or HTC.
Wanted to post something in case someone else has the same heart-failure I did this AM. Now will finish my install, rebackup, and get back to work on more mundane items.
PS, if anyone has a hack to disable this wonderful new feature, please post it. I'd rather have the sounds than the heart-failure again. THANKS
Its not a dodgy pin on the charger making it think its a handsfree kits as well as a charger?
Off in a different direction

Karzi,
Well, your question led me off in another direction.
Removed the HTC Y-connector on the end of the charger cable. Charger alone results in sounds, no problem. Returned the Y into the mix, sounds, no problem. THEN, attached the mini-USB to mini-Stereo adapter I had purchased (to allow regular stereo headphones to work) to the Y-connector... NO sounds.
Apparently the new OS now recognizes that there are "headphones" attached (even though it's only the converter) and turns down the speaker volume to "non-existant", although not completely muted...
See, I said it was a new "feature".
Mystery, however, is solved.
Will now store the usb to stereo adapter with the headphones, rather than leaving it in the charger cable.
THANKS for the "redirect".
Hi, I have a Eris rooted and running the newest TazzFroyo. Now, whenever I plug in my headphones or car headphone jack, my phone for one thinks its a headset with mike. Second, it skips/stutters the music, whether it be the default music app or Pandora, constantly! Its completely ruined using the device for music purposes and its quite annoying. I've looked around and seen many a person with the problem, however no solution. Maybe you geniuses at XDA have any input?
It happened once before, however I did a full wipe and flashed a new rom shortly after, and the problem went away. You can understand how I really don't want to wipe and reflash every time this problem appears. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Edit: I think I found it - little widget named headset blocker - keeps android from thinking my headphones/car dock is a headset and forces it toward headphones. Still wondering how to do this without the need to hit a button every time I plug in though.
As far as the music skipping, I've had that happen to me. They say the cause is underclocking it down to 19200. If you have a SetCPU profile set that low, kick it up a little.
I don't know about the first part of your question/problem, but I've read numerous posts about the quality of the cable that you plug into the phone causing the skipping. Mine does it all the time with a certain cable that is in my truck that I use to plug the phone into the aux port on the head unit. It did it before I rooted and it did it after I rooted. The ROM makes no difference.
Hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllo XDA peeps.
so ages ago we all got the marshmallow update and i must say, issues have been a real thing. I did consider ROMS but too risky as i use this phone daily for business's and such.
Anyway so one problem I can not find across the whole internet is the AUX cord problem, now when i drive, I plus in the cord and this notification appears saying "Headset is connected" then disappears, then repeats almost 8 times and lags my phone which after this, goes to normal and finally works. However!
I found that in lollipop I had never had this issue, I just plug in and it works perfectly. As well as this, I found its not a hardware issue, reason being is that other headphones work, every set of headphones i plug in work like a charm.
I have cleared data and cache from smart connect, even disabled it and nothing. Ive booted in safe mode, nothing.
I really just want this sorted as I love this phone, I do. Im not sure if this is a Marshmallow update bug or something but if any fix can be found or advised to me; Id love you forever, because i miss being able to just plug in and play and not waiting for this bug to simply calm itself from this spasm.
Lag is an issue, I have no clue why but it seems the newest update caused things to get hot, lose alot of battery quick and just plain ol' lag. Any fixes on this to is perfect, at the moment though I iwsh to get the AUX cord fixed as a priority to lag.
Anyway, thanks guys and hope to hear something soon! After all, this is a 007 phone, bond never had these issues
Are you sure its not the physical connection on your phone? May it happened to get damaged when you upgraded MM.
Headphones work fine for me. I recently got a rental car with no bluetooth and bought a cheapo stereo cord to hook to the car's speakers and I saw this occur. No lag though. The major annoyance was that goggle play music would stop thinking the headset was unplugged. After some dangerous debugging while driving, it seemed like one end of the chord was defective. When I swapped the problem went away.

Literally nothing hardware related, the cord in my car works fine with other devices. It's very weird and as I say, I did a short test and found that lollipop on this device actually creates no problem, I then updated tonight and found it happens again.
I think it's more software related and I hope android N is just a pure wave ?
I have the same issue.
So so many problems with this phone ?
I have the same problem as well. What I do is plug the jack, wait for it to finally recognize it and then launch the app I need
