Hi there,
Since i use my phone way too soon for all sort of non important phone calls, and get expensive bills quite often, i wonder if there is some sort of program that tracks the amount of minutes used to call. Or even better, that you are able to set a maximum per month
Is something like that existing?
I use a TP2, winmo 6.5

is there way how to overclock the XDA? I was able to install the JS Overclocking Software, but the unit hangs when set at 236 mhz.
there is a link trying to look for it.......I read about this......hmmm!
overclocking is possible, but whenever it goes to suspend it hard resets the device (at least it did that for me)
i strongly disrecommend it...
Again I have to ask, is it worth the instability, and possible damage to the unit for a few extra Mhz? I will never understand the need to overclock. Would your really notice it?
Yes, if you have several apps running, you will notice it, but I don't think it's worth doing it...
Hi,
I'm experiencing some very noticable lag when it comes to switching applications; especially when the XDA is turned off and a phone call is received.
From my own testing, when I call my XDA from a landline telephone, it rings twice from the landline phone (or so) before the XDA even powers up and then switches to the phone application (which can sometimes take two or three seconds) - by this time, the call has been routed through to voicemail because the call wasn't picked up in time - Argh!
To help speed things up a bit, I make sure that there are only a few applciations open at any given time, but I'm thinking of running the JS Overclock software that is available at http://www.pocketpccity.com/software/pocketpc/JS-Overclock-2001-1-12-ce-pocketpc.html - has anyone else used this, and if so, what did you think of it?
Thanks,
I use the overclock program, and have NEVER experienced a problem with it.
Generally, I'll leave the XDA default. If I'm running a program that needs more horsepower, I'll crank it up. If I think I might be away from a charger for a long time, I might crank it down to save the battery.
Works very well for me.
I am thinking of getting hold of one these phones as a cheaper alternative to my tmobile upgrade options. It will allow me to make substantial savings by reducing my tarid.
At the moment I am on tmobile and have a vario2 so I realise I am going to notice a huge difference but I was hoping for some advice as to what I can expect.
My main use for my device is to have regular email and internet access. It doesn't need to be great - just reliable and in my pocket. It doesn't need to be 3g as long as it is good enough to cope with.
Can I have your views on this one. Do you like the phone you have if you have it.
I have had a good search but cant find much in the way of opinions.
Browsing the web on a non-touch screen device is definitely a step down from PocketPC experience. That said, Opera mini and PocketIE work on it. The phone has EDGE, no 3G or Wifi. That is going to make browsing a lot more like the 56k days than you might like. That said, the nice thing about htis phone is that you don't need a geeky holster to carry it around. It fits in your pocket, and its probably thinner and smaller than your wallet.
Do you find you can browse the internet without too much trouble. I do realise it isn't going to be the same as a big screen and a stylus and a qwerty keyboard.
Wifi doesn't bother me because I have an unlimited data tarif so I never use it - even in the house - there isn't any real point.
I wish there was something decent available to buy out there that didn't cost the earth.
To renew my contract and to get a touch plus will cost me £27 per month (more than I pay now - £25.49). TO renew my contract with no phone will be £15 a month. I need the tarif I am on as its the bees knees BUT I need to replace my VarioII as it no longer syncs at all and other bits and bobs are failing now too
I really like my StrTrk. It's a great size, and with WM6 now realy functional. It's main limitations (for me) are lack of WiFi, inability to read SDHC cards and no 3G. Having said that, there isn't another phone currently on the market tempting me to switch. I'll take the convenience of the StrTrk over these nice-to-have features for some time to come.
I use push email all the time as I travel a lot for work. xT9 input works well for short replies. Browsing is OK for an emergency, but it isn't great. Pocket IE in the WM6 builds is much more functional than it was on WM5. The screen resolution is actually the same as a Pocket PC (320x240) but obviously the screen is much smaller. Also, as mentioned EDGE is as fast as it gets.
There is a thread under the General Smartphone forum called something like "Smartphone Web Browsing Bible" or somesuch. Definitiely worth a read if browsing is one of your main cirteria.
Good luck and let us know how you go.
I love it. I'd love it more with Wifi, but not having it hasn't been a big deal.
I'm just surprised it hasn't been more popular.
Thanks for that - I will ahve a good look at the guide.
The wifi won't bother me because I dont use mine now. I also mainly use my Vario2 for mail so that sounds ok but I would like to be able to use the net as well.
How long do pages take to load with edge on the phone. Its hard to guess because newer systems and older technologies sometimes do the same as older systems and newer technologoes.
Just have in mind low battery life, especially when making a lot of calls and low ringtone volume. Other than that its great!
I charge my vario2 overnight every night. Would it be worse than this?
Just won a touch on ebay so I will see how I manage speed wise. If its hugely worse than my current phone I will sell it and try for a touch plus.

Just switch your Vario2 down to GSM and find out for yourself.
I could do that (if I knew how) but I wasn't sure if the phone itself being faster which it probably is because it is a newer breed may affect the speed anyway if you know what I mean.
How do I switch down by the way?
Or maybe it would be a better description : locator after theft.
Now I hear you all thinking.. utfs.. I know and I did..
So here is a description of why I want this program and how it should work.
Why
Recently my motorbike has been stolen. At the place where I live I don't have the possibility to stall it indoors,
so it has to stand near the wall of my apartment building.
Of course the cops don't bother and the bike is of to be never seen again.
Now for my next bike I don't want the same to happen again.
So I thought of installing my old Touch Diamond into the new bike, attached to a car power converter directly onto the main battery of the bike
(and if there is space a backup battery). Of course the Diamond would be fitted with a prepaid sim with enough credit.
How
would I like to use the program. (With this info I think it's more understandable then when I tell you what functions I'd like it to have.)
When I get home on my bike I would park and lock it. After this I would send the build in Diamond a message like : "Arm" So the alarm kicks in.
From this moment of the device will :
- Watch its GSensor for movement
- Start to determine its GPS position (if not already done)
- And tart to determine it's location based on cell tower information (for in case the device does not get any GPS signals)
When nothing happens this day or night I will disarm the alarm with a "disarm" message when I want to leave with the bike the next day.
As soon as the device is armed and moved (GSensor) for more then, lets say, 20 seconds (to minimize false alarms).
The device should SMS me that there is movement and start to send me it's location.
Every minute for the first 10 minutes or something and after that only when I send it a message like "location"
Also off course the device should make no noise. Unless maybe a short (not too loud) beep when armed and double beep when disarmed.
And maybe when receiving a message "Alarm" the device would make a lot of noise so I can find it when I'm near to the last known location.
While we're at it the device might also watch for sim card changes and sms me if a new sim is inserted.
And (optional) maybe the program could be cooked into a clean and stable rom so even a hard reset would not mind it at all.
I hope I covered all the basic elements I'm looking for.
If someone know's a program like this or could write it for me this would be awesome. If it is working good and stable I would like to pay some money for it too.
As you've probably seen on my writing If the program is in Dutch it would be awesome. If it is in English however it would still be awesome.
Finally it would be nice if some options could be set through sms (optional) (since the device will be bad accessible) and that I would be able to set some tags myself.
If you have any questions or any additions.. Please feel free to mention them.
With kind regards,
Richard Zondervan
I don't know if this will cover all your needs, as it's based around the phone getting stolen or lost, not something that the phone is attached to, but it may suit...

If not, how about something made specifically for the task?

Thanks for your input. Although the first option does't seem to cover all the needs, and the second seems not to work in the Netherlands.
Hi,
First of all, I'm not a developer but only an end user with a need to minimize the huge amount of "dirty water" that Androids are leaking....
My example; I'm using my device abroad in many countries, I have a dataplan that allows me to pay domestic even if I'm abroad.
I have a very restricted dataplan(about 20MB), these MB is supposed to last 1 month. I'm only using 1 App, which collects GPS positionings and also sends event updates (i.e I have collected/delivered)... I send frequently positions to my server, these packages are very small, about 350 bytes at time, so you can imagine that 20MB will last quite a while...
But guess, it's not lasting long! Even if my app is turned off, the phone keeps transmitting data! and a lot of data too... It turns out that my application only uses less than 5% of these 20MB per month, even worse 20MB is not enought, the consumption is >30MB....
So, that was a very short back ground, now to my question: I would like to know how you can control the Android OS so you can minimize this "Dirty water" flow? The only information I would like to transmit is my own!!
I hope that someone of you great developers can assist me in this matter, if you need more information just let me know,
cheers

I don't know how many more times my desk will survive due to me banging my head against it...
It's a long story which I will cut short; we have bought a large number of cheap handsets (Nuu A3L, spec sheet here: https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/4fc6428b ) and they're using Sygic truck as their navigation tool.
We straight away ran into some major issues, the main one being with Sygic/GPS. The devices would begin navigating but would then start to lose GPS signal and start bouncing around, sometimes they would recover (only to do the same thing again a few minutes later) and other times they would just lose GPS connectivity entirely and would lock up for 10+ minutes.
After seeing how poorly the application ran on these devices I had a hunch that the application was hogging every last drop of available system resource. I removed as much bloat from the application as possible, I turned off the 3D map (2D is much more fluid), turned off all POI, turned off traffic updates etc and it appeared to resolve the issue. I drove for 30 minutes with two devices side-by-side, the default one continued with its horrid GPS loss while the customised one worked fine.
A few people have taken these out today to test, but are apparently having the same issues regardless of the changes that I made.
I'm now at a loss and struggling to work out what else can be done to help. They're running Airwatch and we can push remote changes out at any time, so I am at the mercy of those more knowledgeable than I (you).
If anybody has a decent suggestion then you win a free balloon.

Let me be clear that I never played with sygix enough to speak directly about it. You may have already tried the things I'm brainstorming here.
I'm not clear as to why you didn't just load a different mapping app on these? There certainly are a lot of them.
What level of connectivity are they using? If you are on GSM or 3G, downloading map information as the vehicle moves around, that could slow things down to a crawl. Using an app that doesn't have to work this way could be a solution.
I noticed that the phone has a 500ish MHz clock speed and just 1 GB of RAM. As you've discovered, every layer of complexity in the mapping will slow it down further.
Something like Tom-tom was written to run on a lot less hardware. That's the kind of thing that I'd look for. I believe that Here is also made for very low end hardware.
Not sure if it helps, but at least it's a path worth looking at.
