I saw it on the new HTC Diamond. Looks awesome. Is there a way I can get the touchflo 3d? Does anyone know if it will work on a Mogul?
As of right now it does not work on the mogul. People are working on it but unsure if it will actually happen.
There are a few programs that can be made to look similar to TouchFlo3D but, obviously, aren't. They are ThrottleLauncher (closet in my opinion), Wisbar Advance Desktop 2 (jdume made a skin that looks like a duplicate of of TouchFlo3D but it has problems on my device and no scrolling of the bottom bar) and XiaMultiTheme.
If you look in the devloper and hacker forum you can find links to most of these.
ThrottleLauncher is your best bet....... but (always a but with the Mogul, eh) there is the whole no hardware acceleration on the device means the interface is quite jumpy at times... nowhere near as smooth as it should be.
If we had working hardware 3D acceleration, we could potentially get Manila to run on the Mogul... but I don't know how that would work running an app made for 480x640 on a device that is 240x320.
Hi guys! I have a couple questions for anyone who can answer them.
First, is it known whether 3D is only shown when the phone is in landscape, or does it also display in portrait?
Secondly, if it is always displaying in 3D, can we expect there to be an API to convert apps and/or view current 2D apps in 3D?
EDIT:I have found several blog articles stating that it does display in both landscape AND portrait.
Code:
http://blog.gsmarena.com/htc-evo-3d-vs-lg-optimus-3d-taking-the-fight-to-another-dimension/
Which brings up even more questions!
Is the screen using parallax barrier technology to display everything in 3D or is this some new fangled screen.
If this is the case (i.e. parallax barrier) are we only going to see half of the 960x540 resolution (480x270) when in 2D mode? I'm asking you parallax barrier experts!
Also, still no answer to my second question, but I assume we won't know at all until the phone is actually released.
3d landscape only
Probably
The htc evo 3D can do both portrait and landscape in 3D. This feature has been used a a key selling point over the optimus 3D (which can only do 3D in portrait mode)

a couple videos of the 3d, I've seen more but all do the same thing, to view the 3d turn it on the side, not one mention of portrait 3d or pic showing the pentile matrix "optical alignment 2d tear" if you will, which leads me to believe it is landscape only, if you can post information "outside of the optimus comparison which is full of inaccurate information" to prove 3d in portrait mode you will have my thanks because I would LOVE it more, but I can't find that information

I don't know who to believe! This is a major question and a huge selling point. For example, if you don't own any other 3D technology what else does this phone do for you than alow you to look at your pictures strictly on your device. If this is a hardware limitation, I can understand, but if they just didn't put in the effort to make the UI 3D then I will be throughly dissapointed.

right now I have an optimus 3D in my possession and when you take 3D pictures it takes them in .jps format, which is essentially just two jpegs which then gets rendered by the software for the 3D. So you still get to transfer the .jps files to you computer (for backup purposes) and then on the phone convert it to 2d which will create a jpg of both frames. =)

That's cool, I figured that would be the case. In fact, I remember on the androidandme interview, the rep told them that when you shot stills in 3D it also saves a 2D copy.
This doesn't help my question though! I'm wondering if the phone can display 3D while in PORTRAIT.
First person to give me a proven answer gets... something.
EDIT: I beat you to it. Updated OP.
reread post 4, that optimus comparison is full of inaccurate information and cannot be used as a source and is the only site stating 3d in portrait
yeah sorry, can't help w/ the issue of portrait vs landscape haha... the optimus and evo 3d screens are diff. Buuttttt just an fyi the optimus is only landscape.
I am basically writing this article to help all those who have spent time and time to buy the best 3d phone and are probably reading STEREOTYPE reviews repeating same things again and again and leaving you in a more complex state that you were before reading them.
I own an HTC Evo 3d and I also own a Optimus 3d and i also own an Acer 4738DG 3d laptop. I spent hours trying to find which of the two phones is best but i ended up buying both. Now this review to help those wanting to buy and trying to choose.
I will NOT go into details available at every other review website. I will only point out features that really matter and are not available anywhere for review.
PHONE SIZE AND FEEL
O3D is definitely not easy to hold. Its light but difficult to operate. The standby button and unlock button is at the top which makes it difficult to use, since this is the button you are likely to use a lot. The phone is lighter than EVO 3d which is an advantage.
Evo 3D is very bulky. and HEAVY. However due to shorter width than O3D it is easier to hold and grip and the unlock plus startup button is more accessible than O3D. My personal choise is Evo 3D for this round. Simply because it is easier to grip, although it is heavy.
3D Capabilities
Evo 3d is NOT a 3d phone. Surprised? Well thats the truth unfortunately. Evo 3d is a 3D camera which lets you take pictures and view them in 3d. NOT a 3d phone. I dont see any intention of HTC to make it a 3d phone as such. The only thing they have developed is a 3d camera ad a viewing screen. There is no 3d conversion as in you would have to manually covert2d pics and videos on your PC before you can view them on EVo which is useless.
O3d is a 3D phone. its a 3d camera, plus 3d interface icluding 3d channel youtube, plus 3d gallery, plus 3d menus, plus 3d application plus 3d games. Hell, it can even convert ON THE GO 2D movies and snapshots in 3D without any external software.
Go for O3d if you want a full 3d phone.
3D Camera Quality
Evo 3D captures stil photographs in 3d format at max 2MP. Video is at 720p. The camera is pretty basic with regular Htc options and only one option of 3d width adjustment. The camera in 3d mode has flash. Horizontal viewing is best. Vertical although supported is hardly noticeable in 3D. 3d Depth is not as cool as O3d but the pictures come up nice and bright.
O3D captures stil photographs in 3d format at max 3MP. and video at 720p. There is no flash for 3D stills or movie which is a HUUUGEEE drawback. The 3d camera is very smart and allows many 3d options like side by side, vertical cuts and other depth adjustments. The depth of 3d pics is better than Evo3d. but the picture quality itself is not that great.
If you operate in a bright environment go for O3d. If not go for HTC cuz flash is a huge advantage. The low resolution of HTC is compensated by the fact that it has flash.
Pre Bundled 3D software
HTC Evo3D = None
O3D = 4 games in 3d, Separate 3d gallery, 3d stuff accessible from LG 3d store which has movie clips and other apps plus games.
UPDATES
O3D is promised by LG to be updated to Gingerbread in October alongwith more 3d applications and 3d interface. LG has a 3d STORE from where you can download 3d videos and clips, free plus paid. Means you dont have to dowload, crop, resize and then somehow make them work on HTC evo3d.
HTC Evo3D from what i have learnt is not getting 3d updates from HTC. It is left to the developers for that.
ROOTING
Both can be rooted.
Volume Rocker
Volume rocker key in both devices is a pain to use. Its so much embedded kind of inside the phone.
Battery
O3D battery lasts for atleast 4 hours more than Evo 3d.
The other stuff is pretty basic. So if anyone is looking for a 3d phone this review may help him.
I have been an HTC fan throughout. But honestly LG has come a long way. I have the LG app files so if anyone interested in porting them to HTC evo 3d that would really be great.
If this helps, just say thanks.

So... Did the LG win the "Updates" part based on promises on adding an update that's been out for months? Frankly it should have shipped with GB. Kindof ridiculous that it didn't...
Also, converting videos and pics on the go doesn't seem all that convenient if the camera can just take 3D videos and pics. Why take a 2D anything and convert? The conversion won't be even half as good as the real deal.
EVO 3D does videos and YouTube in 3D.

The Evo 3D comes with the green hornet 3D at least with sprint, and spider man 3D demo.. how does that not count as 3D content? also as the user above said, we can watch 3D youtube videos as well...
Not sure I can take someone serious with a review that spells "because" with "cuz". Not being rude, just saying :/
And Zook!? What's up son?!

My Evo 3D came with The Green Hornet 3D and Spiderman 3D. It also came with that 3D Games, but I wouldn't really call that one software though.
First of all thanks for the replies.
This guide is not basically to support one phone over the other. Point being whats good in 3D.
Lemme answer few of the posts so far,
Auto 2d to 3D conversion. Well this feature is kinda handy. With a 3D phone in your hand, you have the new camera to take 3d pics but what about your old collection. Do you want to boast off the 3d and enjoy the same pic with 3d content? Well then LG is your choice cuz (because) the phone can do that.
The result is not that bad actually. I remember when i first laid hands on my Acer 5738dg 3d laptop i converted a lot of 2d content. Never liked it. But this new screen concept of without the glasses does a pretty decent job.
I can say this cuz i HAVE TESTED it on O3D. I would suggest someone else to test and say if its that bad or ok.
The games that come with HTC EVO 3d are standalone games available in sprint version. I am talking about sim free versions of both phones. PLUS O3D has a 3d interface from which you can actually use and launch the game.
Lastly, LG promised an update in august and they delivered. I think the gingerbread update is coming in October, but what I am more interested in is the promised development that LG stated that this update will enable 2D games to be viewed in 3D as well. That is what i meant with when i said its a true 3d phone.
I will probably keep both phones till either HTC gets a port of LG 3d interface or LG gets an update for camera 3d flash. After that I will sell one of these.
Meanwhile, if anyone wants a hands on comparison of any feature please post here and i shall help to the best of my knowledge.
BTW someone mentioned youtube? Well when i meant youtube built in O3D i mean a real 3D youtube app. Maybe i need to post a video to let you guys have a look. Youtube in 3d is accessible by adding ",yt3d" to any search. But thats not what i meant.
Any questions are welcome.

Someone will need to work to port.

Lets wait until O3D get ripped, and all that software, app, and other goodies will be in my rooted HTC (better than LG, and prettier than O3D) Evo 3D as well

Converting arbitrary 2d images into 3d w/o the actual physical 3d data is stupid.

You dont call 2 3d videos and 1 game 3d interface or software.
What i agreed with the author of that post was that its not 3d software.
The 3d videos are bundled by sprint not HTC.
In O3D, LG has worked to make it a 3d phone.

Kind of right, but what about for example
Cyberlink powerd dvd 3d conversion, dvd FAB, stereoscopic viewer and tridef.
These are all 3d converters and players and pretty decent ones and trust me they are making a lot of money for these features cuz large public wants it.
Anyways, the 3d conversion on O3D is not bad actually, its good. Not excellent and not at all like actual. but good.

Oh.. OK, didn't get that is what you where talking about.
Hiya,
Yes I am a noob so apologise in advance, but when I purchased my UK Evo 3d i noticed a distinct lack of ANY apps that were in 3d!...the only thing that i can see in 3d are the preloaded 3d photos
Also as I am in the UK I think that I sadly can not download all of the apps that are released in the US atm, but I was hoping to build a thread naming all of the apps that you can actually use in 3d on the device so if/when they are released over here I will already know what to get
thanks!
Hello rajanm1 if you are looking for 3d apps/games you can take a look at my thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217024 i know there are not so many games on the list but i will update it when i find more 3d games and/or apps
You might all remember the cool video HTC showed us quite some time ago; HTC EVO 3D - First Look
The video was hosted on YouTube in normal and anaglyph format. I wondered if that video could be converterd to a true 3D video (stereoscopic that is). There is quite some software available to convert anaglyph to stereo, but it took me a lot of converting and rendering hours to find out the best way to conserve the 1080p quality. Anyway, here's the result:
PS: watch on your EVO 3D with the YouTube app!
Grayscale version: (best quality)
Colored version: (combined the grayscale with the original for 50%)
Original colored from HTC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSuD45mRl_o
Original Anaglyph from HTC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBHRHgjEAjg

btw I just made a bootanimation for the True 3D bootanimation patch, check out here
