"Factory" 2.1 to root - Droid Eris General

I am conducting a bit of an experiment with the new phones I will be receiving. (Old ones were having issues with multitouch so I convinced Verizon to send refurbs)
If this hasn't already been covered, I will be more than happy to post if I have luck going from "factory" 2.1 (if the phones are shipped that way) to root 2.1. There's a slim possibility that the phones shipped to me have 1.5, if so, I will just kill off this thread.
It's more or less a future PSA for any new Verizon subscribers getting the Droid Eris (Is that even possible?).

"factory" will be the ota 2.1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681648

Oh well in that case, let this thread die.

I honestly doubt the phones will come with 2.1 on them. I don't think they've manufactured them for a little bit and Verizon is selling off reserves from what I know. When I bought my Eris in Feb it didnt have the MR updates at all and made me install them at boot, I'm sure the refurbs you get will be the same.

Yeah taco, you're right. They both turned out to be 1.5. And let me tell you, I am seriously digging Tainted Vanilla, that is a sexy rom...

Android 2.2 Root?

Are we going to root the Android 2.2?
We could use some of that Flash!
Release on Android Developer!
I know someone who has it rooted already, but on a droid. I dont know what exploits will work for the version for the eris, as it will be different. The droid 2.2 (and root)hasnt been released sure to a google sign in issue, making the phone useless with no contacts or activation.
anyway, yes it will be rooted.
All in due time kids, the SDK was literally released about 12 hours ago. It would be silly to expect a workable rooted 2.2 rom.

That would be complete Kaos to release a 2.2 rom in 12 hours
1) Eris wont support flash, its arm6 and at this time the flash libraries are arm7.
2) We won't have it officially on the Eris, there wont be any rooting it. It will have to be ported or compiled for th eris, and installed on a pre rooted phone.
3) There is not any one who "rooted" this on the droid, all droid installed are after market or developer installs, and are installed on prerooted phones.
You sure Eris won't get 2.2? That makes me sad... Looks like I might end up rooting my phone so I can get it.
Damn......I was looking forward to getting the 2.2 update for my Eris!
Wait a minute....I am not rooted.....so does that mean I will get it or update my phone?

2.2 wont be sent to our phones. we wont even get the update, rooted or not. the only way to get it is to root your phone and put on the ported rom.
Why won't the Eris get the update? I get sick of hearing that companies decide to leave like 3 phones off the list and update everything else.
What does the new update entail anyway? Is that the "froyo" update people keep mentioning on blogs and news pages?

I didn't realize the Eris was out of production. I only got my Eris in January.
That would explain it though. Not that I'm going to switch, you guys have any recommendations on another android phone? I heard people are loving the Nexus One.
I got my eris in january as well.. I am going to ride it out, until I get the new every 2 upgrade discount or whatever... Im running 2.1v3 now, and have nothing but time to wait until it's rooted, or not, doesn't really matter lmao.. A newer, more powerful phone will more than likely be free in a year and a half anyways... So i'm good. I wouldn't go spend money on another phone right now, unless you are just that much of a tech junkie lmao
Idk if I can root my phone.
I have some f*cked up version on mine that came though Insurion and I don't know what to do with it. It works fine but I would like root for 2.1 OTA running 1.49 HBOOT. (Ya, I know, it's weird huh.)

such a shame
how verizon has treated eris owners. it is capable of far more than what verizon released it with. if they would have maxed it out and marketed it, it would probably be one of the top cell phone sellers. and verizon should continue to support this device considering of when they took it out of the stores was recently. they should be required to support it for 2 years after it was pulled for the customers who purchased it at the last minute so they will be taken care of through their 2 year contract. dont have us sign 2year contracts if your not gonna support the product for the period of our contract.

1. If you don't mind me asking how exactly did Verizon treat Eris owners so poorly?
2. Just because Verizon has stopped selling the Eris does not mean they wont continue to support peoples hardware issues.
3. They don't owe you anything, lots of people buy cell phones when they are end of life. All those smart phones & feature phones that you see as "free" or less than $100 are more than likely EOL.
I'm wondering, once Google releases the source code for 2.2 and we get some roms cooking, will they be on the new boot loader so us people with 1.49 S-ON or one of the unrootable leaks can root to a new rom?

[Q] The (OTA) Eris being dead and all...

Where should I go from here? I'm not finding anything that I'm enjoying about the Eris anymore. It's naturally slow and outdated, and my favorite ROM has been discontinued.
I've researched a few phones on the market (Incredible, Droid 2, etc) but I know there are others out there. Are there any that are just completely phenomenal?
My contract isn't up for quite a while, so I won't be getting an upgrade anytime soon unless someone knows of a contract loophole. Any advice for a (relatively cheap/free) upgrade?
Also, any good way to breathe some new life into my Eris? I've tried every major ROM, not totally enjoying any other than Evil Eris (again, discontinued..). Throw out any ideas short of bricking it

My girlfriend had an eris, I too flashed every rom I could to speed it up, no luck, so i called customer service and bugged the hell outta them telling then how horrible it was until they agreed to give me an early upgrade. Just bought her an incredible last week for 300 minus 100 mail in rebate. I went onto vzw/trade_in website and they appraised her eris for 132. So it really is only costing me 70 outta pocket for her upgrade. And ps, she says the incredible is everything she always wished her eris could be lol
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I have a question about this too, I bought my eris around the time it just came out, (not quite sure anywhere from Nov-Jan) Is their a way where I can get an early upgrade for 20$ or something? I heard their was an early upgrade you could get.
I'd suggest one of the froyo roms. Evil Eris was my first and favorite ROM for a long time and I wasn't satisfied with any other until Tazz Froyo.
The fact is... our phone is pretty weak. Software tweaks at this point will not really help us all that much unless they're absolutely major. Basically, until Android 3.0 comes out we really won't be seeing much change.
That being said, I don't suggest you upgrade. Smart phones are still in their early stages, especially android phones. In a year they'll have been taken to a whole new level. It'll be like comparing a modern PC to one 5 years ago (like an i7 to a P4) the way that things are going.
I suggest you wait it out because the longer you wait the more incredible your phone will be when you get it.
Wow, I appreciate all of the feedback.
I didn't even consider Hungry Man's idea of toughing it out for a better phone in the long run, that's a good one. High on the priority list.
@jiggaman508 -- I was wondering if complaining would actually do any good. haha.
@Stonent, Hungry man -- I grabbed KaosFroyo and have to say that it is WAY better than any other ROM I've tried. Gonna try Tazz out later tonight probably.
Thanks for the feedback! Keep the ideas rolling

Considering that there have been few rumblings (other than some well placed informants), I'd have to say probably not a full blown release, but maybe the start of soak testing.

If you are on this forum, chances are you are already running some type of GB on your phone and it is probably better than any "stock" release whether that is tomorrow or a month from now.
the GB roms run great (im on theory)....but come on man...its not going to be as stable as a final GB + Sense build...there are many proprietary files that are not complete with the test build...i cant see why the new official build wont increase are GB rom experience

Just wait for one of the devs to make a rooted version of the release and then flash the zip to your phone. Simple as pie.
you shouldnt update if you are rooted. wait for a rooted stock firmware.
I highly doubt it since there's been little or no talk at all about it. I was wondering since I just snatched one off of CL for super cheap. guess I'll go root instead.
I'd like to point out that it was all of 3 weeks ago they leaked something that looked like a reliable RUU called MR2 that was beyond question Froyo. Is it just me, or am I the ONLY one that took one look at that fake looking photo and said to myself "Dear God, the only thing that would look more fake would be a duck bill on a cactus." Can you imagine what the order for such a thing would sound like? "Hey, Johnny! We need and INTERNAL MEMO drawn up. Make sure to put our logo in the LEFT corner where NOBODY would ever put a logo on official stationary, be sure to add a picture of the device incase NOBODY has ever seen our first LTE phone, and definitely add specific OTA release numbers AND the radio version that will include so that our boys down in technical support will grow big rubbery ones as they dangle the information out there at hords of pimple-faced geeks calling with 'problems' but are really just hoping for the next big scoop for Androidforums.com" If Gingerbread come out in an official OTA today, I will eat my Thunderbolt and post the video on Youtube. I promise. In fact, if it comes out in the next 90 days, I'll eat the phone.

Some news on the ICS update from HTC

I received a call yesterday from an HTC wanting to discuss a rather critical customer support feedback survey I recently submitted. In the course of the conversation he mentioned the ICS upgrade and I asked him when they expect that to happen. His answer:
"It'll be late May or the second half of this year."
I asked him to repeat it, and whether he had any evidence to confirm that. He said he was sure of the time frame. Make of it what you will, but I've suspected for a while we really got boned in the butt with this one. Give up on an official ICS release in any timely manner.
That's what I figured. When I was researching buying this phone and they said "Late Q1", I was skeptical and said it would probably be more like May. We got confirmation that they were blowing smoke when they announced the Rezound wouldn't be until "later this year".
The CS rep you spoke with seems to align with "later this year".
There has to be a way to get faster updates. What happened to the Google Android Update Alliance?
So basically what he said is sometime this year. That's a pretty big window, so basically we will see an official ICS build within the next 9 months. This is the very reason I root my phone. We already have very stable fully functional ICS builds thanks to our Devs. I don't understand how our Devs can get a great build for us, but yet the "professionals" can't seem to make it happen.

Because they aren't concerned with us getting updates. They just work on the next phone and get around to us if they feel like it.

I'm betting it has something to do with Verizon ,not htc. Id blame Verizon for slowing down any update or rom upgrade. Simply because Verizon is testing it to find all the software bugs and tricks embedded in the ROM. And they are determining what bloatware and/or cripplrware they want to stuff in it before its release. Thats why the date keeps getting pushed ahead. Srnd it back to htc devs after vzw is done. Htc tweaks it more, vzw wants to do more to it...and back to htc yet again... :/
The alliance is a joke.
More marketing bs. Great phone though

Even sadder ICS news
http://phandroid.com/2012/03/06/htc-sensation-line-to-get-android-4-0-but-only-sense-3-6/
I think if this is the case with the Rezound rooting will be a must.
Thank goodness for the leaks. They have certainly gotten to the point of being solid and give me most of what I want out of the update. But it doesn't change the fact that Android/Sense 4.0 is ready and working on other phones and they clearly don't have much respect for their previous promises or customers.
I'm sure VZW gets partial blame here, but they are all hurting their reputations together. The extra wait better result in us getting Sense 4! If we just get a bloated official 3.6 I say we get the pitchforks!
Funny, gingerbread with sense 3.5 looks and acts basically like ics with sense 3.6. I tried Joel's sense 4.0 rom and it was pretty cool. This is why we root folks. Never trust the carrier or manufacturers. Stick with the developers!
I'm sure VZW puts HTC through hell with the roms for VZW phones. Definately sucks, but IMO, the longer its put off the more likely we are to get sense 4.0

welcome to retail. HTC/Verizon already has your money. They sold you a phone with whatever software is had on it at the time. They aren't obgliated to update it at all. they do so in order to keep customers happy. its not just HTC either, motorola, samsung, LG, company x; all the same with software updates. Their policy is update the newest first then work their way back. it cost money to develop updates for every single phone model, thats just the way it is. I have learned to not worr or wait for official updates and just use what this great development community has provided to us....4 months early.
the ICS ROMS out right now are honestly magical. Try them out.
I predict that we won't see anything until the "one" is out for at least a month and the buying of that device begins slowing.

I understand your point, however, Android 4.0 was released/announced just prior to the release of the Rezound. If potential customers of the Rezound knew they would not be updated for close to another year (likely when Android 5.0 will be out) I'm sure that would've swayed many buyers.
I myself as well as most of us users on here aren't too hurt about this thanks to our awesome Devs but it sucks to know a lot of people dropped some nice coin for phone that HTC/Verizon have obviously not held their end of the deal of "Will receive ICS in early 2012". I don't really agree & I'm not trying to argue at all.
My point is that the average VZ customer could care less about updates to a phone that basically worked just fine out of the box.
I am the head of our corporate cell phone account with almost 200 phones & if you said "ICS update" to any of our users you would be met with a blank stare as they wouldn't have the first clue what you where talking about. As long as they can turn on their phones & it functions as it's supposed to, they are perfectly happy with it.

you are def right and i agree. it sucks that consumers are fed lies to sell products. honestly though you have to think of it as a numbers game for VZW.
How many people bought the rezound? 1 million (for ease of math)
How many of those people actually care what OS their phone has? maybe 10%?
of that 100000, how many really know the advantages of ICS vs GB? maybe another 10%?
i mean its a small piece of the VZW pie when you think about it.
plus when the next big HTC phone hits the shelves for sale VZW can advertise is as the "first 4.0 HTC device"
it will be summer before we see this. all i want ice cream for is so the devs can finally get us aosp.

That is exactly the point I was making.
It is only posters to sites like this who really care about things like ICS updates & we are such a tiny fraction of Verizons 100 million customers. If every single XDA poster switched to Sprint tomorrow, VZ wouldn't even notice the hit........
This isn't anything new. The HTC Droid Eris was stuck on Android 1.5 forever. I'm pretty sure Android 2.2 Froyo was out already by the time the Droid Eris got its official Android 2.1 update. Based on the past, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the official release of Jelly Bean sometime before we get the official ICS update for the Rezound. I was also fully prepared for the possibility that we'd have an AOSP port working before we get the official ICS update from Verizon. The Droid Eris already has a mostly working AOSP ICS port and they haven't had an official update since Android 2.1 to base anything off of, so I know its possible with the right amount of time and patience.
Anyways, going forward its very possible we are only going to have AOSP ports for the Rezound, because it is entirely possible at this point that ICS will be the last officially supported version of Android for this phone.

[Q] Sell my photon or home for bootloader unlock of 2.3.5?

I've determined I really can't stand 2.3.5 and motoblur anymore.
Option 1: continue to wait and hope for a bootloader unlock, while feeling a little bit of anger everyday that I use my phone with it's lagging Android version2 (I cant even remember the codename it's so old).
Option 2: sell the photon on ebay and be rid of this nightmare
In making this decision, I'd love the communities input: what are people's thought on the likelihood of me being able to unlock the bootloader (after taking the OTA upgrade that locked it down, obviously) and gaining ability to upgrade this photon 4g?
I realize this may be pure speculation, but perhaps some people have better insight, and at least right now I have really no idea- for all I know, the bootloader could be unlocked tomorrow and I should just be a little patient. Or, possible I should stop waiting and move beyond kubler-ross stage 2.
Thanks, jetpeach
If you absolutely cannot tolerate Android 2.3.5 aka Gingerbread as a day to day completely functional OS and you cannot tolerate not being able to use ICS or JB on that phone, get rid of it. Like, now.
I have a Photon myself, fairly well known at this point, and I believe it is a great piece of hardware, and yes I would like to use ICS or even JB on it, it's not an absolute requirement for it at this point. Now, as a disclaimer I have to say that my Photon had/has 2.3.4 on it and I have successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted it dozens of times in my process of experimentation going back and forth from stock to custom GB/ICS/JB ROMs, and right now at this point I'm back on cybik's CM7 unofficial 9/30 build and it works great.
I know I could load up the stock pure 2.3.4 SBF and deblur it using Lokifish's deblur script but, since that CM7 unofficial has everything working (and I resolved the settings FCs using that CMParts.apk someone shared) and it's fast and snappy and stable so, that's that.
As for the locked bootloader, I don't have any hopes for those stuck with 2.3.5 at this point, but you never know when a small miracle will come. If you dump the Photon, get something that you love and is capable and you find yourself thinking "I'm glad I got this phone" and not "Boy I sure miss that Photon" then who cares. If the bootloader for 2.3.5 gets unlocked at a later time AFTER you've gotten rid of the Photon, I really seriously don't think you're going to cry a single tear over it because the new(er) device you replace it with will more than likely be better for you overall.
You have to look at it from the one perspective that matters:
Are you hating on the phone for it being a piece of crap that is 100% useless for you, or instead are you hating on just having a locked bootloader so you can't do a lot (if any) experimentation on it?
If you consider it to be 100% useless, again, get rid of it. Drop it on eBay and dump it while the dumping is good since the value does go down a bit every day in the big picture.
If it's useful as a smartphone (which of course it is), then keep it. That's about as simple as it gets.
Seems to me you've already answered your own dilemma in your very first statement:

Pretty solid statement there with only one logical conclusion: get rid of it.
Photon with GB is still a good device (even with the blur).
Cut your losses and move on.
Its time to dump it and label it the 'ex'.
sell it. you're missing out on a lot. the only thing that's maybe good for is webtop (ubuntop). jelly bean is where it's at. it's wayyyyy better than GB blur. bleh.
yeah.. the photon is my first android phone. the hybrid rom and ics theme/apps have make the phone better than stock.. but i wish we could get a leak too so i could enjoy 4g when i move. (i dont have it here atm so its not a big deal that it's broken.) but i might switch carriers when i move anyway so we'll see what my next step is.
You have been waiting since 2011 for an announced Q3 ICS... You won't see it before you die. I put the odds of a bootloader unlock in the next year at .01%, you got screwed, we got screwed too... but the only consolation is we unlocked first which makes it far less sucky. If I were stuck on 2.3 I would certainly sell it fast, the new features are awesome.
The issue is what you do *After* you sell it.
A wise man once said, Fool me once, shame on sprint, fool me... ya can't get fooled again.
October 29th Google announces a new Nexus phone, should be awesome, made by LG, Get the next 3-5 android updates. Prices on Galaxy Nexus phone should drop significantly (Already 230 off contract with Verizon) and even that should get future updates, GSM phones have large amounts of portability and get updates near instantly.
Don't get fooled again. "Photon Q will get Jelly Bean"... "Motorola has changed Baby, come back". Q2... Key Lime Pie... Q3... Maybe motorola is skipping JB to give us KLP right away?... Q4... "Sorry Guys, 100 dollar trade in! We will change next time."
Photon makes a great Android Touch.
And if you roam on Verizon you can buy 100 minutes for $15. Even if you have a bad ESN.
