Android 2.2 Root? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are we going to root the Android 2.2?
We could use some of that Flash!
Release on Android Developer!

I know someone who has it rooted already, but on a droid. I dont know what exploits will work for the version for the eris, as it will be different. The droid 2.2 (and root)hasnt been released sure to a google sign in issue, making the phone useless with no contacts or activation.
anyway, yes it will be rooted.

All in due time kids, the SDK was literally released about 12 hours ago. It would be silly to expect a workable rooted 2.2 rom.

That would be complete Kaos to release a 2.2 rom in 12 hours

1) Eris wont support flash, its arm6 and at this time the flash libraries are arm7.
2) We won't have it officially on the Eris, there wont be any rooting it. It will have to be ported or compiled for th eris, and installed on a pre rooted phone.
3) There is not any one who "rooted" this on the droid, all droid installed are after market or developer installs, and are installed on prerooted phones.

You sure Eris won't get 2.2? That makes me sad... Looks like I might end up rooting my phone so I can get it.

Damn......I was looking forward to getting the 2.2 update for my Eris!
Wait a minute....I am not rooted.....so does that mean I will get it or update my phone?

2.2 wont be sent to our phones. we wont even get the update, rooted or not. the only way to get it is to root your phone and put on the ported rom.

Why won't the Eris get the update? I get sick of hearing that companies decide to leave like 3 phones off the list and update everything else.
What does the new update entail anyway? Is that the "froyo" update people keep mentioning on blogs and news pages?

Its business. Why keep updating an out of production product? When if they stop, many users will buy a newer product.

I didn't realize the Eris was out of production. I only got my Eris in January.
That would explain it though. Not that I'm going to switch, you guys have any recommendations on another android phone? I heard people are loving the Nexus One.

I got my eris in january as well.. I am going to ride it out, until I get the new every 2 upgrade discount or whatever... Im running 2.1v3 now, and have nothing but time to wait until it's rooted, or not, doesn't really matter lmao.. A newer, more powerful phone will more than likely be free in a year and a half anyways... So i'm good. I wouldn't go spend money on another phone right now, unless you are just that much of a tech junkie lmao

Idk if I can root my phone.
I have some f*cked up version on mine that came though Insurion and I don't know what to do with it. It works fine but I would like root for 2.1 OTA running 1.49 HBOOT. (Ya, I know, it's weird huh.)

There is a lot more to be excited about 2.2 than flash

this man, he speaks the truth.

such a shame
how verizon has treated eris owners. it is capable of far more than what verizon released it with. if they would have maxed it out and marketed it, it would probably be one of the top cell phone sellers. and verizon should continue to support this device considering of when they took it out of the stores was recently. they should be required to support it for 2 years after it was pulled for the customers who purchased it at the last minute so they will be taken care of through their 2 year contract. dont have us sign 2year contracts if your not gonna support the product for the period of our contract.

1. If you don't mind me asking how exactly did Verizon treat Eris owners so poorly?
2. Just because Verizon has stopped selling the Eris does not mean they wont continue to support peoples hardware issues.
3. They don't owe you anything, lots of people buy cell phones when they are end of life. All those smart phones & feature phones that you see as "free" or less than $100 are more than likely EOL.

I'm wondering, once Google releases the source code for 2.2 and we get some roms cooking, will they be on the new boot loader so us people with 1.49 S-ON or one of the unrootable leaks can root to a new rom?

[Q] Is Gingerbread going to be released on June 30th for the Thunderbolt?

Come ladies and gentlemen, place your bets!
i think so lots of websites have scans of an internal memo stating the update as the 30th. if not the 30th then the 7th since thats when free hotspot promo ends and they said a software update would disable this.

i agree verizon loves releaseing things on thursdays
Considering that there have been few rumblings (other than some well placed informants), I'd have to say probably not a full blown release, but maybe the start of soak testing.
I'm not holding my breath
Who really cares anyways?
If you are on this forum, chances are you are already running some type of GB on your phone and it is probably better than any "stock" release whether that is tomorrow or a month from now.
the GB roms run great (im on theory)....but come on man...its not going to be as stable as a final GB + Sense build...there are many proprietary files that are not complete with the test build...i cant see why the new official build wont increase are GB rom experience

Just wait for one of the devs to make a rooted version of the release and then flash the zip to your phone. Simple as pie.
you shouldnt update if you are rooted. wait for a rooted stock firmware.
I highly doubt it since there's been little or no talk at all about it. I was wondering since I just snatched one off of CL for super cheap. guess I'll go root instead.
I'd like to point out that it was all of 3 weeks ago they leaked something that looked like a reliable RUU called MR2 that was beyond question Froyo. Is it just me, or am I the ONLY one that took one look at that fake looking photo and said to myself "Dear God, the only thing that would look more fake would be a duck bill on a cactus." Can you imagine what the order for such a thing would sound like? "Hey, Johnny! We need and INTERNAL MEMO drawn up. Make sure to put our logo in the LEFT corner where NOBODY would ever put a logo on official stationary, be sure to add a picture of the device incase NOBODY has ever seen our first LTE phone, and definitely add specific OTA release numbers AND the radio version that will include so that our boys down in technical support will grow big rubbery ones as they dangle the information out there at hords of pimple-faced geeks calling with 'problems' but are really just hoping for the next big scoop for Androidforums.com" If Gingerbread come out in an official OTA today, I will eat my Thunderbolt and post the video on Youtube. I promise. In fact, if it comes out in the next 90 days, I'll eat the phone.

[Q] Ice Cream Sandwich for the Atrix?

Alright, so I did a little searching and still have a question on whether the Atrix is going to get Ice Cream sandwich, as all of you know, the newer Android OS, not released yet (but within 1-2 months).
Only other thread found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973034
We obviously have an unlocked bootloader and a host of options available for the phone, including CM7 which is in pre-beta, but what about ice cream sandwich?
I understand motorola PROBABLY won't release it, because they only recently released gingerbread, but does anyone know of someone willing to port it, once it's rolled out? or...anything?!
Thanks
An official version, I highly doubt it. A leaked custom ROM of it, more than likely...
Can you say, Cyanogenmod 8!? Hopefully but I heard that newer devices will be able to run it. So I'm guessing that the inspire, atrix, infuse sensation, etc. And as far as the official update for ice cream sandwich, I would forget about it

no one knows the answer to this question, so there's no point in asking it.
I have a doubt about getting ICS on the Atrix.
Let's suppose that Motorola won't bring us ICS officially.
Given that starting from Android ICS there must be proprietary, binary drivers for properly running it: how would Cyanogenmod 9 work for the Atrix, if there won't be those proprietary drivers?
Why did you resurrect this after 3 months? As if there weren't enough of these threads!
Because this was here first.
That's a great question
Sent from my CM860
The best way to get ICS right now is to buy a Galaxy Nexus. The best way to make friends on these here XDA Atrix forums is to be patient and stop agonizing over when the Atrix will see it. The speculation never ends, but at some point you just have to stfu and enjoy what you have!

At least I made half-damages. Now it is gone, this thread is resurrected and my question is still valid.
I am waiting for a CM luminary to help me understand about the new strange "We love opensource, but you need the proprietary binary driver" Google policy and how this will impact non-officially upgradeable devices.
Yeah, I don't exactly understand how google is planning to get that ball rolling either, if the drivers aren't all available.
As for the atrix, from what my understanding is, the real issue with ICS not being ported is the missing Tegra 2 driver.
Now, don't quote me on that, but that's what I saw.
i think there is a slight posibility we will get official ics, seeing how the photon and bionic will probably get it, and the atrix is basically the same phone but for a different carrier. but even if we do get official, still sticking with cm9
Not sure where you saw the photon is getting it. No officials I've seen for that one. As for the bionic not gonna help us much as its not tegra 2

well seing how they are already running gb, seems like they would get an official update. and if the photon gets it since its a tegra 2 the porting would probably be pretty easy, but im not a dev so i wouldnt know.
Not going to happen....or at least for the next 6 months. this "must have the latest software" is a god damn disease. Lol I think this phone is awesome, but was never well supported or embraced by the developing community from the get go. Not being harsh but a lot of developers have left.....

And the used prices for Atrix are joke now, you can get one for 200$. I remember how I paid 343# just two month ago. I feel stupid.
As for the Tegra 2 and ICS, don't you guys know that numerous tablets will be getting ICS ?
you must be mad i paid 1 cent for mine, (granted it was with an ATT upgrade) but after taxes and their upgrade fee's .. still less than 50$ for the atrix
To me it all feels very elitist.. YOU can have the latest upgrade but YOU can't.. Most of us are locked into 2 year contracts.. Yet at the rate that phones are evolving most phones are out of date within 6 months. With new O/S upgrades coming every year at the most. So what Motorola/Google are telling me is my phone which I've had just a year is not worthy of the newest update/upgrade. What Makes it worse is with Google purchasing Motorola's mobile phone division you would think they'd showcase how the two can work together.

Unfortunately, Motorola is a bit overzealous with their phones (as they've always been, IMHO); they released 16 android devices for 2011 (as noted here And even with that they'd announced devices for 2012, with the new focus on 4G and HD screens, etc.
I wish I could say I'm surprised, but big company, big aspirations, they're gonna follow the money. I just wish that since they obviously are going to toss it aside, they could just give us everything. Just say **** it, we're not going to do any more go to town on it guys.

That's why I've sent an email to everyone lines in the Unlock Bootloader thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427802). It was pretty lengthy too. It even went to the CEO of Motorola Mobility. Not sure if that will get their attention, but if enough of us do it, then it could make a difference.
Has ANY Motorola devices (other than tablets) received an official ICS update? If not, Im not too worried. Once they start pushing out updates for ICS and time continues to go by without an update for us, I will start to worry. As far as an official 2.3.5 update goes, I dont care if we get that officially or not. Its not that big of an update.

EDIT: Apparently it's not official according to some XDA user's opinions, but I'm pretty sure it is official. In that list they didn't only mention 4G LTE devices, they also listed the Incredible 2 and the Rhyme which are both 3G devices. And also, the DROID Charge is 4G and it's left off the list. It's an assumption but I believe the list to be complete. Motorola and Verizon have no obligation to upgrade to ICS, even if the DX2 is within the 18 month upgrade period. Their 18 month upgrade period never stated how far upgrades would go and it has been upgraded multiple times already. I honestly don't mind if everybody gets their hopes up for Motorola/Verizon to release ICS for the DX2 because it's only going to let you down. If I'm wrong, fine. That's good for everybody with a DX2! I don't know why people have to come to this thread and act like hard-asses to get their point across. I was only releasing some news.
well the Verizon press release states that it is a list of 4G devices that will be upgraded.
then again the dinc2 isn't 4G, right?
I think that's the phone I should have gotten instead of this X2
Well, ever since I got my tablet and the ICS update on it, I haven't been doing much on my DX2 anyway. Shoot, I might just go back to a cheap flip phone.
Really liked the DX2, but I just don't understand why Motorola kicked it to the curb!
Yeah dude, that's just the 4g phones that are getting upgraded. Haven't said which 3g phones are getting it yet.
Sent from my MB870 using XDA
Frankly I'm not surprised. I have a feeling there isn't enough RAM available in the X2 for an ICS install. My phone is always starved for RAM.
Don't want to bring any hope into this, but I'll be using something called a brain here for this. These are devices confirmed as of now to get it and on the Moto Upgrade site still lists the devices that are being evaluated to get it.
This is really just VZW rehashing what phone manufacturers have already announced, except they are directing this specifically at their customers. Nothing here we didn't already know, really. Of course they are going to try to get it going on the 4G devices first, that is this year's breadwinner.
I'm kinda over ICS now. lol
Yeah seems like it was all a pipe dream. Development is pretty quiet now but it's ok I'm content with CM7
CM7 DX2
**** it....
I think its the Verizon way of saying they aren't bothering upgrading any 3G devices. They just spent Billions building a 4G network that is sitting there doing next to nothing (except crashing every now and then). They need to get folks migrated to 4G ASAP.

1. The article says:
"We will continue to update this list as additional details become available throughout the year. Also, follow @VZWNews on Twitter for additional upgrade announcements."
2. The only Moto devices on the list are those that Moto confirmed a while back. I highly doubt Motorola is doing "planning and evaluation" on a bazillion devices just to ditch each and everyone of them.

Except they promised timely software updates for phones 18 months or younger. That hasn't happened.
The RAZR was advertised as ICS upgradeable, it received it 6 months after ICS released, advertising it is upgradeable implies it will get it soon.
It would have gotten ICS anyway, it would be good business.
But since it was advertised the implication is that itvwill get upgraded sooner, and not in six months.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
Simply because you inferred a specific time frame does not constitute an implication by the carrier.
The phone is great, it runs quite well on GB. They gave us a stability update.
If you bought it just for the ICS upgradeable and wanted it NOW then you should have gotten the Nexus.
The word upgradeable does not state a timeframe.
You don't buy a computer hoping it will be upgradeable.

The Google Update Alliance declared that a phone released within the last 18 months would get timely software updates, both carriers and manufacturers agreed to this deal. Therefore since it was advertised to be ICS upgradeable when the consumers could be assured that they were getting ICS anyway from the alliance that they would get a quick timely OS update. It wasn't.
Logical, no?

Yeah, these aren't computers in the technical sense, these are smartphones. And in the smartphone market if you buy a popular high end phone released a month before a huge software update the overwhelming majority of users expect the update. Refer to my above response for the rest of your answer.
I don't understand why anyone cares if the bootloader is locked on this phone. Who cares about flashing a new kernel when the battery already lasts longer than a day? Why would you ever want to flash a new radio when this one is the best in the business? The phone can still be rooted and ROMed.

If you have the OG Razr we don't get over a day. Flashing custom kernels not only gives better battery, but better performance, more communicability and stability.
Flashing custom radios gives you the ability to get even better reception and possibly battery life than we are now. What is there not to want?

If we had boot loader unlock none of us dingbats that flashed certain leaks would be concerned about ever getting updates again.
I agree w you on some points. Kernel? Blah, who needs it. On ics 84 I get well over 6 hours screen on time on 3g/4g mix. How much better could it get vs stability. But boot loader unlock would at least solve our issue of being stuck on leaked software. Until someone comes out with a patch...but it just shouldn't be so difficult. Free boot loader equals easier and less complicated. Less chance of bricks because people could actually simply fix them.

OK, I try to give simple explanation on this,
In Android world, there were at least 3 type of users.
User1 : As long as he can make call, send msg, install app..bla2, he' s happy. When the time comes, he upgrades to new phones.
User2 : Like user 1, but sometime they got bored of the original firmware(mostly bloated) & like the option to do some modding. So that the get most out of what they've paid.
User3: Android phone is their toy. While they still using it like user1, they also like to mess it, make modded they want & eventually supply it to user 2.
I'm user3, I was like user1, 2-3 years ago.
This RAZR has a very solid hardware(At the time I bought it). But the potential is limited by the original firmware. The extra potential is not unleash-able because the BL gets in the way. User3 hates this & most of them migrate to other manufacturers.
Is root enough? Not for me.
This RAZR is too easy to brick. You maybe lucky, because somebody has leaked the original firmware for your variant.
What if it has never been leaked like my variant?? If there is no BL, I can just flash your firmware variant.

Makes sense. I did forget about the OG RAZR guys not getting full day battery, but I def think the radio is gonna be tough to improve on. The clarity on this phone and signal strength is amazing.
