Hey,
So I used to have the Titan. Often I would take out the battery and just use the phone without it in *edited* while plugging into the wall, in order to save the battery for later....or to avoid the battery from over heating and shutting down services on the phone.
Pretty simple:
Is there anyway to program the phone to stay on with the battery out *edited* with the wall charger in? Seems like if on the Titan you could do it, here you should be able to as well?
Edited for xander
just because you were high and seeing stars doesnt mean you can operate a phone with no power unless you have a wall charger. although you failed to mention that so this thread should be kaput.
the above reply was almost as bad as the original thread post.
giggly
I definitely should have read over what I was about to post.
anyhow, any solutions?
Mine works just fine without the battery in if I plug it in......... no mod needed??
You do realize that once the battery is completely charged it is no longer charging. Just about EVERYTHING Li-Ion is "smart charged."
The batteries would burst into flames if continuously charged.
I have had a VERY low battery (5% or lower) and plugged into a 500ma power supply (typical USB charger, not HTC factory) and while really taxing the phone (streaming skyfire flash videos back when Hulu worked) and it would only charge the phone 10 percent in about 20 minutes. Sometimes it seemed it wasn't charging at all. The phone is really sucking some current, cellular radio downloading large amounts of data, processor is blazing running skyfire.
Now with the HTC factory charger being a 1000ma (1A) power supply it could obviously supply enough power for the TP at "full demand."
Goes back to the original question.
WHY?
It isn't serving any benefit. Li-Ion does not have a charge "memory" like old NiCd batteries or NiMh. Yes there are a certain amount of charges the battery can take but again, the phone is a smart charger. Once the battery is at full capacity (you want a charged battery right?) it no longer is charging. There is no battery degredation occuring.
to simply answer the op and not beat him to death with words, there is an easy answer to the question... no, there is no software to be able to do what you want for 2 reasons. one, there is extreamly low demand for the application. people here don't generally spend a week or 2 making a program to make one person happy. they'll do it for a hundred people though. two, i could be wrong about this reason but i don't believe that the hardware will allow it. it's designed to have the electricity run to the battery first, then the phone draws the energy from the battery for use. to my knowledge the phone doesn't have a way to be able to use the energy from the charging port directly. sorry champ, the only way that you are going to get this done is with an electrical engineering degree, soddering iron, and the circuit blueprints themselves.
to simply correct the poster aboive and still think about beating him to death...
yes it is possible, no you do not need extra software... and yes the hardware supports it... Im sorry I personally don't know how to do [email protected]: But if you post over @ PPCGeeks im sure they'll figure it out for ya.
I know it's possible for two reasons... If your phone is plugged Via USB in the bootloader, you may take the battery out. Also, on a ROM that I had installed previously my phone froze for about 2 mins and the battery was blazing so i took it out... To my surprise it was still on (i was tethering) and working perfectly! ZOMG...I love people who answer unknowingly...
For the person who said the smart remark about the lithium battery, im sure the OP knew that, but requires the phone to work with the battery off after he was done charging it... This would let him tether or do what it is that he needs endlessly without worrying about the battery overheating...
In other words, if you're not here to help, then sthu... Dont ***** about his question, dont insult him... Either help, or move on...

Uh, I tell you what there buddy. I'll take your post seriously when you can learn some grammar. For all I know I'm talking to a 12 year old know it all who ALSO doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut.
I WAS offering help, by telling him that there is NO POINT in removing the battery. I implied NO disrespect with my post.
If you are referring to problems with certain software causing the phone to overheat and restart/lock up... again that has NOTHING to do with the battery. For example WMWifiRouter, or streaming high kbps video.
The wifi/cellular radio/processor is what is generating the heat.
If you're not charging the battery (IE battery=100%) then there is NO HEAT GENERATED. The heat is not coming from the battery.

Ok smartass.
Explain to me how tethering your phone with a charger plugged in and the battery already being charged causes the battery to heat up.
Think long and hard about your answer. Go ahead and post with your "mAd tyt3 h4x tyP1ng s|<Illz DAWG!"
I'm a ****ing electrical engineer, with a Masters. Take your poems and books and literature discussion groups and go **** yourself.
Only way that is going to happen is if the phone is consuming more current than the charger can provide.
IE: The phone is consuming 650ma, but a typical USB charger can only supply 500ma. In that case then the even simpler answer is NO you cannot use a charging adapter with no battery plugged in.
If you're a car guy here's an even better analogy.
Your car has an alternator (generates current) and a battery (stores current).
If your car's alternator is rated at 100A, then at a specified RPM your alternator generates 100 amps of current.
However, at idle your alternator may only be generating 40A.
If you're sitting at a traffic light and your headlights are on, heater blower fan is going, window wipers are on, heated seats are on... you're consuming more power than the alternator can provide. So the car is pulling current from the battery. The second you leave the traffic light and accelerate and your engine is spinning fast enough that the alternator can generate enough current to supply the demand and charge the battery.
Easy buddies!
We all are here to share knowledge we have to each other right?
Plz. don't let a small thing cause big problems!

as hippy-rific as navi_mappers statement is, i have to agree with him. people are getting a little too angry about this. it was a simple question. unfortunatly it has been answered in contradictory ways. one thing has remained true in most posts though: there is little reason to do what he was trying to do. i believe that he can take that and walk with it. there's no reason that we (as educated and intelligent people) need to resort to name calling and slander. i'd like to think that we are a little better than that. so shut up, stop *****ing and answer the mans question with intelligence damn it! i'd expect this kind of stupid crap over at crackberry.com, not here.

haha yea i was havin a bad week... my bad guys
I just did the conditioning thing for my battery.
Charged fully, then wiped battery stats, now i have to drain it.
How can i drain it FAST?
i have gps on, bluetooth on wifi on
watching a HQ youtube video while listening to music
why is it that when i dont want my battery to drain it drains fast as hell, but when i want it to drain it feels like an hour from 100 to 99?
how can i make this even faster??

Turn gps on, go outside and actually use it with maps or navigation. Will kill your phone in 1 to 2 hours.

rather not its like 30 degrees outside here in Texas ha
so far, 31 minutes used and went from 100 to 76 an hour or two more, and BAM it'll be good.

Even if you're indoors maps and searching for signal might help knock it down more.

Deep cycling is really bad for Lithium-ion batteries. I don't know why people keep perpetuating this myth that you should do this after burning a ROM. I blame Team Whiskey et all, etc . . . blah blah (You flashed our ROM now recalibrate your battery)
Lithium-ion batteries do not have a memory, you do not need to deep cycle them like Ni-Cad, doing so seriously shortens the lifespan of the battery. So unless you notice that the readout for the % of battery charge seems very off from reality don't recalibrate. Even if it is off a little, it will fix itself over time as you charge and use your phone. You don't even need to let it drain a lot. Just use it like normal and charge it when ever you get a chance.

Um, just Google search Lithium-ion. Read a little about the battery technology for yourself and you will see why it is very BAD advise to deep cycle your battery. After a little more than a year with Li-Ion the battery will only hold about 70% of the charge it held when it was new. Keep deep cycling and you will shorten that time to about 4-5 months. Then these same people come back here and ***** about how crappy their battery was because it only lasted a few months and they will offer as proof that it was always crappy because they had to recalibrate it a frequently. I alway think the same thing to myself when I here this from people, "dumb ass, you killed it."
Hell, the sales rep at T-mobile tried to tell me this crap when I purchased my phone. I asked her where she got her electrical engineering degree with focus on battery technology from. After the puzzled look settled from her face I told her that the advice she gave was about the worst thing you could do to the battery. She didn't believe me, but I told her to look it up on her fancy Google powered smart phone. After she did that she apologized.

Wipe battery stats, does not affect the battery, only deletes the stats saved by the OS. It won't make your battery run faster, or better. These are only STATS saved by the system to tell you where your power is going.
Don't go all psycho about the battery issue. get a cheap chinese knokoff battery from ebay with charger (as I did) and just go out with 2 batteries, even with heavy use, 2 batteries should last you all day. (well, with certain roms, Almost all day)

I am running Axura 2.1 with no changes to the modem or theme and a stock battery. My phone is only about 2 months old but running stock I got about 11-13 hours and now I get 24+ hours when I let it. Normally I just charge it every night anyhow because it does not hurt anything, in fact it is better for the battery.
Nothing uses more power than the touch screen. Keep scrolling pages and your phone will be a hand warmer.
I've noticed deep cycling lithium ion batteries can destroy capacity to almost nothing quickly. Keep a charge on it whenever you can. The internal resistance is so low, you won't ever notice a "memory." Until the chemistry inside has rotted itself out.

Excellent job of putting into layman's terms the endless cycle of the relationship of heat creating the substance on the electrode that increases resistance, which creates more heat in an endless cycle that is the death of batteries.
In lead acid batteries (like your car, motorcycle, or uninterruptible power supply) oxidation on the plates create this internal resistance and it is why car batteries are rated by number of months, like a 72 month battery. It happens to some extent to all rechargeable battery technologies, but in the case of Li-Ion batteries the internal chemistry actually tear them selfs up over time.
Long story short is the two really big enemies of Li-Ion batteries is deep cycling and heat. In fact if they are not vented well, and allow heat to build up, you get the battery fires you may have heard about with the Dell and Apple laptops that used the Sony batteries. There have also been a few phones that have been known for melting down.
Y'know, I would love to see a big sticky in one of these forums about this. Another voice of reason -- Don't deep cycle your battery, don't cycle it unnecessarily and don't worry about calibration. Your phone calibrates itself all the time and the less often your battery spends any time at low charge the longer it'll last.
Thanks guys good thing I didn't go too far before one of you told me not to do this.
Thanks again

I had considered getting rid of my home internet to save money and use Root tether for internet.
A friend of mine had said you cannot charge and wifi tether. He said he wasn't sure, he said he thought because it will get too hot.
Out of curiosity I have been charging while tethering WiFi and it does not seem to be getting too hot at all. Just about as hot as it usually is while charging. In fact I am doing it right now.
I had read that there would be an issue with possibly lessening the battery life by letting it be plugged in once its fully charged and continuing to tether. That doesn't make too much sense to me since it starts running off the battery as soon as it is fully charged and then just keeps it topped off.
My question is this....
Is there any reason why it would be bad to charge and wifi tether at the same time?
I may be new to smartphones, but that don't make sense. If in doubt you can take the battery out after its charged.

the phone wont run with the battery out while plugged in. i dont personally own a tbolt yet, but every other phone ive touched doesnt work without the battery in.
All batteries eventually lose some charge no matter what, due laws of thermodynamics. Eventually some of the energy in the closed battery system wont be renewed by repeatably charging the battery. Having to charge it more frequently will obviously accelerate the process, but who knows how much. I am sure someone has done studies on it if you google.
The more pressing question is, why do you think it's more expensive to buy a 50 or so dollar battery every so often than pay 30-50 a month for internet if you think you can use it to replace your home connection? Assuming you arent going to need to buy a new one every month and I highly doubt you would.
Batteries also lose somewhere between 10-20% of their electric potential every year regardless of use just from something called "self discharge." Temperature extremes (high and low) can have short and long term effects on battery life as well since it slows or speeds up the reaction of the chemicals in the battery.
Regardless, you dont have to keep it constantly plugged in, you can charge it and then unplug it until it gets low.
As for excess heat, the heat wont be generated by the battery being charged so much as overuse of the antennas in the phone.
Yeah. I am thinking the same things. It doesn't make sense to me why you couldn't do it. I did it last night for hours..... No issues.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Keeping the phone continuously plugged in will definitely shorten the life-span of the battery.
That being said, it's worth paying $50 every 6 months to a year to just replace a battery than it is to pay it monthly for internet service.
Anyone returning their evo because of a overheating problem? Seems to be a serious problem and don't want it blowing up in my face. Read the article yesterday and checked mine and it charged at 4.348 mv. Or is this a software issue?
You wouldn't happen to have a eBay battery would you? Also the battery may get hot the first few charges. To reach 4.3V, well I'm not exactly sure how that's happening. Take it back I guess but if its your first charges then just give it time.
Unless the phone gives you a warning, or just shuts off its probably not overheating. You would be surprised how hot these can get and still be in a normal heat range. I tax my Evo pretty hard and it will get pretty damn hot, but never overheat hot.
What are you doing when it heats up? Are you playing games, charging, talking. Maybe some more info?
I've had mine in my pocket and noticed that some live wall papers really get the phone cooking. The My Beach one almost burned my leg! I guess my phone turned on in my pocket and it was going to town with random screen pushes. The phone was hot enough to hurt sensitve skin.
I've had my OG EVO get griddle pan hot several times. It has survived as well as the batteries. Every time I think I solved it, the next time it was something else.
Knock on wood, so far my 3VO hasn't got as hot. Yet.
next time you phone gets hot check and see how well your gps works.
there are some funky things going on with this phone.
Playing spider man and game froze the phone got extremely hot had to do a batt pull battery died in like 7 Min's
initial batt life was great like 14 hours and still had 50 percent after a week it got OG evo crappy, factory reset and juice def ultimate and batt is back to great.
Don't know if i should return for exchange.

It wont blow up on you. You should be safe at those ranges. when you start hiting 115 and 120 thats when you may want to unplug it and turn it off.
I had mine charging in the car mount last Sunday while running google nav, and the LED started blinking red and green. I assume this is the overheat indicator, although I can't find it in any documentation.
I had one weird overheating incident right after getting it activated at the Sprint store. 15 minutes later, it had been sitting on my desk and I go to pick it up and its crazy hot. I quickly pulled the back off and removed the battery, the battery was not hot, it was something behind the cameras. CPU I suppose. I waited a few minutes to put the battery back in but then it wouldn't turn on (overheating protection?). Went back to the the Sprint store for an exchange. Waited, waited. In the meantime I put the battery back in and it started up. After waiting 45 minutes with no help in sight I gave up... sigh. Sprint stores around here are always a PITA.
I haven't seen this problem again but seriously what the f? I went ahead and applied the OTA updates in case they included some fix for this.
Yeah, in car charger mine hit 114 with gps going. Took it back, better but not great with the new one 102. EVO 4g ran hot but that was self induced. Oc etc... Stock shouldn't go above 102 ever

My question is should a phone be charging over 4.2 when the voltage of the battery is 4.2 max? Wouldn't that greatly reduced the battery life if charged over that voltage? Anyone care to explain? Cos I'm really not sure what the implications are.

The voltage of the stock battery is 3.8V. I am surprised it would see higher voltages but it may have a variance that is +-(.4) even when charging the voltage shouldn't vary that much, but the amperage should increase instead to charge the battery and run the phone at the same time. I am not sure where you seen the voltage at though so if its an app, how accurate is that app. How often does this happen as well?
I used to have a SM-9005 In Pink on TMO, however my dog decided it would be a good thing to pee on (thus causing acidic corrosion). The phone had the 10K MAH Battery from Zerolemon,
The N9005 itself worked, and did not...its mainboard became corroded where the display connector is and went all matrixy. The battery has 1 corroded strip, one is half corroded, and the rest are fine. I inserted it into the 900P, and it works fine. However battery drain seems to be much...faster...and phone turned off three times by itself. When I turned it on however the battery % went...UP!
Is there an app that will allow me to see how much MAH is still working in the battery? I would imagine there are dead portions & I am pretty sure NFC is not usable anymore.
After flashing a rom away from stock turning off seems to not be an issue and all I know is its been running 3943mv...

I have the feeling that you're playing with fire here.
Using a corroded battery is never a good idea. You have already said that the contacts are corroded and you've seen degraded battery performance and, quite frankly, erratic behavior from the battery.
Continuing to use this battery because it still technically "works" would be, in my opinion, irresponsible. Best-case the battery continues to degrade over time (as all batteries do). Worst-case would be a fried phone and/or property damage.
In my opinion, risking the life of a $600 smartphone isn't worth it for a battery that you can buy for $15 on Amazon.
