I'm not a troll, I'm just really curious and pretty impressed at the Eris' speed, I was in a verizon store today and I used the Eris, which even though uses an old processor and stuff + it has Sense, and is using an old version of Android, it still went through home screens very smoothly, as smooth as an iPhone (3g, or 3gs doesn't matter).
I compared it to the Droid....the Droid was just horribly slow, and it ran a newer Android, didn't have Sense and was using newer hardware, ew.
Then I tried out the Incredible, which is using brand new hardware, new Android + Sense and it was just as smooth (though it still needs work to be iPhone smooth), so yeah I guess I'm in love with HTC devices they really know how to make some sexy fast phones.
So, why is it so fast?
Because it was designed by Chuck Norris.

Wow a chuck norris joke. Wasnt funny 5 years ago, still not funny. And yes, I was just having this debate with my roommate, I'm so used to how sense looked and works that I can't keep a newer vanilla rom on my phone for more than a few hours before I restore back into EE or another sense based rom, just so much slicker. Every vanilla android phone I've played with ALWAYS hiccups when switching screens and the scroll looks awful. Yes I know, purely aesthetic but isnt that what our society has come too...
PS - no widget (beautiful or not) will ever compare to Sense's weather/flipclock.
once you install more apps, have caches full of data, and are running stuff in the background, then you will notice it's real speed (or not since it will probably be too slow to show it XD). On the incredible things are much better, as its got a much faster processor.

Better processor and more ram. I also have tons of apps installed and a lot running in the background on top of sense. I usually float around with about 30-50mb of free RAM and my phone barely ever slows down or stalls between screens. Youre doing it wrong.
My phone is slow as crap and lags like a #$%^&!! Running stock 2.1. Have tried with and without sense. Tried with and without a task killer. Doesnt matter what I do, it's rediculously slow. I texted a friend that is the manager of the Verizon store here and he said he'd let me trade it in for a motorola droid or incredible. I just might be taking him up on that offer!

I found your problem.. you should get that fixed.
..but, seriously, I can't believe how quick my Eris is running my ZenEXP-Eris clocked @ 528Mhz. When I bump it up to 806Mhz it's crazy-fast.
I haven't tried the Incredible, yet. The Droid seemed like a nice device, but I'm not a fan of Vanilla Android, I prefer it wear the Sense mask, no only for visual gratification, but so I can easily sync my contacts and calender from Outlook.

You just haven't found the right widget. The weather widget made by "android apps" (paid) is EXACTLY like the sense ui widget. It has the animations and everything.

Hey guys im a 5 time user of droid phones. Ive been extremely dispointed in Android so i left and am waiting for the Iphone. But the thunderbolt looks hot. Can someone give me any reasons to get the thunderbolt or iphone. It is tempting, and im a huge fan of sense ui. But the lack of apps kills me.
I can't wait for the Thunderbolt myself. Some of the things I am interested in with this phone compared to the iPhone are:
- 4g connectivity
- 4.3 inch screen
- 768MB of RAM (compared to 512 for iPhone)
- Higher resolution front and rear cameras
- Removable storage support
- Flash support
- Wifi media sync with Winamp app
Android has most every application I am looking for. Navigation is free too. I will admit I am still waiting for a few applications such as Netflix. I would much rather be on an open platform any day.
What applications are you looking for?
What lack of apps, for every iphone app there is an android app that does virtually the same thing.
It really comes down to this (in my opinion):
Which is more important, simplicity or customization?
My wife wants her phone to be simple as possible and thats why she loves the iphone.
Me on the other hand, hates the iphone because I can't do complex customization. I believe you should be able to change your notification tones without jailbreaking.
So if you want simplicity and just want stuff to work with as little intervention as possible, then the iphone is probaboly for you.
If you want to be able to customize the phone to tailor it more to you then android is the way to go.

This is true for the average consumer. But there are HUGE (at least to me) differences between the Evo and the Thunderbolt.
The Thunderbolt has an S-LCD screen compared to the Evo's regular LCD screen.
Thunderbolt has the 2nd gen 45 nm Snapdragon processor with Adreno 205 gpu compared to the Evo's 65 nm 1st gen Snapdragon processor with Adreno 200 gpu. This means the Thunderbolt is faster, more responsive, drains less batteries, and has much better graphics power.
Thunderbolt has 768 mb of RAM compared to Evo's 512 mb. Self explanatory here.
Thunderbolt also has a new 8 MP camera that is DIFFERENT from the Evo's camera. It's suppose to be a lot better especially under low light situations.
Thunderbolt comes with Sense 2.0 while Evo has the outdated Sense.
Thunderbolt has SRS Dolby Surround Sound while Evo does not.
I think those are all of the main differences. But other than that, they're too different.
Edit: Woops I mean to say, other than that, they're the same. x)
Thanks for clearing that up hacker01

IPhone on Verizon will not do voice and data at the same time, iPhone does have a small screen but more pixels per inch making the screen look better. The thunderbolt has better battery life.
The nicest part about the iPhone is any idiot can use it. Bricking is almost impossible. And because there is no real multitasking its almost impossible to leave an app open and killing your battery (although I haven't had that problem since my Eris)
The final nice part about the iPhone is accessories are made for it cuz its so popular.
But with that said I have 7 friends that have the iPhone (literally 7 I'm not rounding) and all of them are jealous of basic android abilities like turn by turn GPS and how quickly gmail works and wireless backup and WIDGETS.
You loose a lot by going iPhone but you don't have to think when you use it.

I guess I should add the nice part about the iPhone is everybody has the same screen size and what not so making apps is pretty easy but that gives you less options

a really BIG deciding factor for me is battery life. android is known for having semi poor battery life depending on the phone (for me g1, nexus one). when i get the thunderbolt i wll definately be watching how my battery life is and if its poor then trust ill be getting the iphone. i would hate to leave android tho.
I am having the same dilemma...I want the thunderbolt but the LTE pricing is the deciding factor. And its really pissing me off that we are not getting any answers. Sprint and tmobile had pricing right away.

If it wasnt for the 4g i wouldnt even consider the thunderbolt. Im just afraid if i dont jump on the $30 unlimited now for the 4g data that it might change and then im screwed.

Same here...but Android is so much easier to Customise and replace Batteries . At some point there will iPhone for 4G and so the point of TB being 4G will beome moot. Just gonna sit tight and wait until September and see what is out there...perhaps a Bionic Phone?
Title says it all. What do you guys think?
I love my Tbolt, and I love that I got it at a time where I am grandfathered into unlimited data, which I would not have been had I waited for the Bionic.
And what feature are you waiting to get from Bionic that TBolt can't already do?
I bet the Bionic will be more of a pain in the ass to root...will prob have an even more locked down bootloader
Having owned the Atrix... the QHD display is really a deal breaker for me. It was really washed out, couldnt draw the color yellow at all, and was VERY pixelated. Not to mention its an even bigger screen than the Atrix, so it will be worse.
Not a chance id buy it.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you have got to be kidding me. that thing is dual core. what in god's name makes anybody believe its battery life will be better? if you know engineering and hardware, you will know that unless motorola has unearthed the elixir of battery life, its simply not physically possible. maybe thats why their battery size is bigger. and by the way, good luck trying to run anything except what verizon and motorola want you to run on that with locked and encrypted bootloaders - keep dreaming about CM7 and MIUI.... finally i had an x for a day - nice hardware but horrrrrrrrendous UI compared to sense. no thanks, its htc for me - tried true and tested
For one i think the dual core is wat is makeing me wait. Anyone think its worth it? Also i think the stock rom on it looks amazing. Just juice defender and im set.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
more cores just mean running more processes at "full" speed at the same time. I don't know about you but I rarely render 3d graphics and run matlab on my phone.
multi core cell phones are just a selling point in my opinion.
My opinion... HTC > Moto. I like HTC's hardware designs better. Love the look and feel of HTC devices.
I also hate Moto for locking down bootloaders like crazy, but it looks like HTC may be joining these ranks soon as well. I cannot deny that Moto has some nice specs on their devices... but the Thunderbolt is no slouch.
My TB gets great battery life running stock. It will be even better with root, custom kernel, and custom ROMs. You really cannot go wrong. The development for this device is awesome.
Since my introduction in the Android world Ive had nothing but HTC devices. I don't care for hard buttons so most of the Motorola devices are out for me. Plus, with HTC I can root and run aosp toms as well as Sense. Win win.

Yup, the brightness did it for me as well.
unless you are trying to do linear programming on your phone, i see no point in a dual core phone. i do believe all tablets should be dual or quad core though because they replace PCs - your phone is meant to be held next to your ear and do some simple things like calendar, email etc, do video chat and so on. this is a communication device primarily - screen real estate is too small to be of much use beyond that. also consider motorola's pathetic laptop dock - does anybody think they want that? there is nothing you can do on that. convergence my rear end.
I don't have any experience with Motorola because I am a flash junkie and I don't want to be stuck with a locked bootloader and Motoblur overlay. My first Android was an HTC G1 and my only experience venturing away from HTC was the Samsung Vibrant, and although I learned a lot about flashing, after six months of not having an AOSP rom because Samsung would not release source, I gave up and got another HTC device. I'll stick with HTC, thanks.

It is one of the biggest myths that ICS adds HW acceleration to the UI that GB lacks. Here is the truth straight from the horse's mouth:
https://plus.google.com/105051985738280261832/posts/2FXDCz8x93s
Bottom line is Both GB and ICS have HW accelerated graphics for animated windows. What ICS adds is a check box to force HW acceleration within the windows, but checking that box breaks applications, and also adds extra overhead that is unnecessary. ICS overall is a smoother running UI with more polish than GB, but it's not because of the reason you believe.

Thought ICS was optimized for dual core as well?
I personally think the voice to text interface is a lot better. For example, when I'm texting on ICS using voice, the microphone box doesn't just disappear and start "working" to figure out what you had said. It translates your speech to text in real time and you can actually pause to think without having to hit the mic button again. And you don't even have to hit "Done," you can just hit Send and the keyboard minimizes to show the whole chat again. To top it off ICS allows you to select words or phrases and correct them if Google got it wrong.
I didn't realize how much better this all was until about an hour ago. Last night I switched back to GB because on the leaks half the time my text wouldn't go through and I wouldn't realize it, or I just couldn't get them to send. Can't wait for the full stock version to release

I have used it for fun for a while, but it gets old quite fast.
It's not as pragmatic, especially when the phone is in landscape mode or in low lighting situations.

I've been using it since I upgraded to ICS, and my dad got on me about not actually locking my phone. In my opinion, it's just something new and fun, not necessarily better than the other unlock methods. In my experience, it has a negligible effect on battery life, and I unlock my phone probably a hundred times a day or so. I still see roughly the same battery life as before I was using it, so it's at least insignificant enough for me to not be able to tell.
Like somebody else said, it can be a little less practical, but I only notice it being less practical than the pattern, and only when in bad lighting, as then it doesn't work and forces you to a secondary unlock, either pattern or code. When you're in good lighting, however, it can be the fastest method to unlock. So in my eyes, it's basically a wash.
Also, I get the random, "The f*ck did your phone just do?! Does it recognize your face? That's sweet!" from anybody who hasn't seen it before. This also leads me to believe that people like looking at your passwords, so in that sense, face unlock is awesome because nobody can really steal your password. Unless of course you have an identical twin or a dedicated friend that carries a picture of you around. Or they cut your face off Hannibal Lecter style. Haha.

Hey all!! Recently purchased this wonderful phone, and am loving it. One thing that kind of bothers me is the performance. Certain games that I run on my OG Evo are crap, but on the new LTE, it's great. HOWEVER, it's not as great as I thought it would be. An example would be "Blood and Glory." My buddy has a SG2, and it's pretty smooth on that, but on my LTE, it doesn't seem as smooth, and gets choppy sometimes. Is it because Sense is bogging the system down?
Am I the only one with this problem? Or am I just being overly critical?
I'm rooted, and running Flex's Stock Rom + Ultimate dual cpu mod.
Any input would be much appreciated, because this is bothering me!
I would guess it's either a software fix they'll do soon or Sense, it seems to take a lot of processes/RAM, so it could be a culprit. Not sure, try a more barebones one and see how well it works compared. Could always nandroid back easily.

I think you're just paranoid...
Everyone that is a smarphone owner is always hypercritical of their new device when they first get it. I still have my OG Epic and occasionally play with ROMs with it because of the Hardware keyboard+gamergrip, and i realize how much smoother the EvoLTE is compared to a 2 year old device. Yes there are some times where i have many apps running and hit menu but sense has to restart, but all in all, it's a helluva lot faster phone than any device on the Sprint market as of now.
Give it some time and let the Devs do their thing. SG2 has been out for quite longer than the EvoLTE; they have many more optimizations and tweaks than we do.
I compared Tiny Tower on my Epic Touch to the EVO LTE and i think the Epic Touch is smoother.
But since they are different manufactures, different resolutions and densities its not a fair comparison. I just know in past devices when im comparing stuff, games seem to flow better on Sammy devices.
Overall im still happy with my EVO LTE. Cant wait for LTE to go live where im at.
No you are definitely not paranoid. The phone does lag a bit. I've noticed this after I use many apps or if I don't restart the phone for some time. I've tried a couple of different roms like Fresh, Viper and Charmeleon and they all have some UI lag after a while...I think we just have to wait for HTC to release an update for sense.
It's not a hardware issue. The app simply isn't optimized for our software. It's an issue for the app dev of a given app to figure out.
This phone handles 1080p content np, nova 3 without issue, and I have yet to feel it be anything but fast with apps/interface

This was one of my main reason with this phone right out the box. At first I thought of rooting right away and hoping the custom rom would have a much better handling to this UI lag but your post stated the oppisite.
Man I really love this phone but lag such as multitasking, games like Temple Run, and the ability to not play HD (720p or 1080p) directly from the browser in desktop mode is very frustrating to ME. I'm hoping a lot of this has to do with stinking Sense UI and not the S4 itself. If the S4 itself to blame then the Samsung GS3 will probably won't be silky smooth either right out the box.

Nah ah, try switching to 720p or 1080p on youtube video "DIRECTLY" from you browser (not youtube app) in desktop mode, then come back to me. Again, I don't know if it's this phone or the S4 inside this phone that struggling, cause that's the case the Samsung GS3 US variant won't be good either due to the same S4 being used.
I haven't noticed any lag but what does irritate me is the Damn multitasking. What's the point of opening more than 1 tab when 2 sec later you have to reload the whole tab all over again. I don't see how HTC dropped the ball on that one when the OG and 3D handled multitasking so perfectly

If I defected over to Sammy it would only be for a nexus device but rumors are the next nexus is going to be made by multiple people... We will see how that works out or if its true.

Overall my phone is very fast and smooth..but I've always been an early adopter (launch day) with all my phone ...hero , og , 3d and now LTE..I have come to expect some bugs initially ..and think if your a picky or inpatient person than u shouldn't buy a phone when it first drops..if u think the issue here is hardware related than that's just stupid IMO..
Hello guys a question about the performance of the phone
Is there any FRAMEDROP or STUTTERING when moving around the UI especialliy when OPENING and CLOSING APPS if you could can, can you close and open google maps and tell me if it lag or fps drop?
Being extremely OCD about android lag as i have return and sold various device such as the tab 10.1, NOTE 1, and the nexus 10 because the lagginess and stuttering when opening apps drove me CRAZY.
Now pardon me if i sound rude but can your eyes notice the difference between 30 fps and 60fps? I think a lot of people claiming that their device has no LAG simply cannot TELL what LAG even is and their eyes are untrained therefore wrongfully stating that their device is “smooth” all the time.
I do see lag in maps. No device is perfect, even my iphone 5 chugged sometimes.

Oh yea INSIDE of maps is fine idc about that im talking about when OPENING and CLOSING the map app.
There is pretty significant lag throughout the UI. The Nexus 4 w/ the same specs, minus Sense UI and the 1080p screen, is much smoother. The biggest issue for me in day to day use is scrolling left and right through GTalk sessions. It lags BAD. But that's the only thing that really bothers me at this point in my day to day use.
But the screen makes up for it.
Opening and closing apps is pretty darn smooth, especially once the apps are cached in the ram.
I dont notice any lag. But I use Nova Launcher prime and not Sense.
Very fast launcher.

Honestly I haven't seen this at all. Might be a device per device issue. I have no lag that I can tell. It's really smooth and responsive. Then again I've never used a Nexus 4 so maybe it's smoother. I still wouldn't use the word lag.
This topic would be again subjective just like "Hows the battery"
However, I have been an owner of these devices in past 3 months -
iPhone 5, iPad Mini, Xperia V, One X+, Galaxy S3, Note 2, Butterfly
A lag will almost always be present in all devices at some time or the other. However, I see where you are coming from. So to answer your question, NO, there is no lag.
I am using Virtuous ROM (even Stock ROM for the matter) with Power Saving On (for CPU) and the only times I have seen lag -
1. After reboot when you go one homescreen to another the widget needs to reload data atleast once.
2. When entering app tray after reboot or app install, it refreshes the app list.
In normal use and opening/closing apps, there is no lag and YES, I can differentiate between 30/60 fps. Example at hand, try scrolling contacts/tones in Whatsapp on a S3 and Butterfly/DNA

Thank you for this man really appreciate it, People on the nexus 10 forum was like NO NO LAG AT ALL!!! Lo and behold i bought it and about to return it after a week So you think the xperia z would be a pretty good bet for a lagless experience? Considering the hardware is similar.
Sense 4+ does have lag regardless what people say. It is there throughout phone UI. Be it settings, desktop or whatever.
However there is no unusual delay in opening or closing apps. And general performance is great in apps.
But if you are coming from Nexus 4, or Note 2, yeah this phone lacks that buttery smooth feel by default.
However with De-sensed Viper with LK kernel and Nova Launcher prime with fast animation = as close as it gets to Nexus 4 UI experience. It is significantly smoother to use. AOSP contacts is blazing fast as it should be.
Note 2 is buttery smooth ? ... Simple test ... Scroll a long list of items like ringtones on both Samsung phones and HTC side by side ... Let me know how it goes (actually don't since I have already played with them and know the answer)

Not on my end. Once again its probably a perception thing. Speaking for everyone isn't a good idea

Nope .. not perception ... Samsung has there own interpretation of project butter since there exynos code is not open source which is no where near what it should be ... I am not saying HTC is perfect, but its better butter .. lol

Woops... I meant to respond to a different post. I meant no lag on the DNA lol

You can take my opinion with a grain of salt if you want to, but I am probably in the top tier of ocd people when it comes to ui lag or slowness. I simply won't put up with it.
I owned the DNA and now the Note 2. Don't let anyone here fool you, the DNA is quite sluggish in homescreen scrolling. To the point that it was one of the main reasons that I got rid of the phone.
There isn't really a ton of lag, although there is a little bit. But HTC for some reason chose to slow down the animations so the scrolling feels heavy. I absolutely hated it.
My personal opinion and conclusion is that they did it to mask how heavy Sense is. Because I had a Rezound and the animations on that phone were much faster but it was a complete lag and stutter fest.
And I always laugh at the people who brush it under the rug and just say to run Nova and you will be fine. If you are going to do that, why not buy a phone with better battery life and expandable storage? Because Nova will make any current gen android device run like butter. I personally buy a phone for the stock launcher and software that it has.
Either way, good luck with your decision!

For some reason unknown to me and I think many devs Samsung doesnt utilize hardware rendering to the fullest and ends up with jerkiness in all apps ... Htc does and its very much apparent when scrolling in even 3rd party apps ... I think in the end you need to play with both phones for few minutes to see the difference and make a decision

Ditto for any Android device of the current gen or even last gen for that matter. What does Nova have to do with this phone specifically or the question that the OP is asking??
