Strange picture appeared on SD card - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A photo of a guy giving the peace sign suddenly appeared in the root directory of my wife's Droid Eris SD card. It's titled,"tmp-fsq" which leads me to believe it's a temporary file that was cached there, but we're not sure why.
The file shows that it was created on May 4th. That was weeks before we rooted it. Which means the ROM was completely flashed after that date, but the picture just recently showed up.
Could this be some sign of malicious software, or something else?

Post the picture.

Does your wife use foursquare? This is a complete guess, but perhaps this was a temporary image it downloaded of another foursquare user? ("fsq" == "foursqaure"?)

I know this is a old thread, just confirming the guess by colinodell. I have an img in root dir on my sgs tmp_fsq. I checked it after reading this thread, Its a profile img of one of my foursqaure friend.

[Q] Found a Galaxy SII Need help getting owners info!

So I found a GSII on the train today, Nobody to been seen so I picked it up and took it with me, Got home to discover a lock screen, No smudges on the screen to guess the lock. Look at the SD Card there's a few images of a kid and some toys but that is all, Im guess everything else is on the internal memory.
Anyway to unlock this device and get any info to contact the owner, Tried the networks, they said it has not been reported as lost or stolen.
Not the kind of guy to keep this. I have a Galaxy Nexus
Could you try to set your phone like it doesn't ask for pin and then insert the sim card from that sgs2 to look for numbers like mom
Sent from my sgs2 running cm9 using xda app
There was no sim in the phone when I found it, Which I though was bizzare.

Wow, that's quite polite of you.
You're the reason I keep an "Owner's Info" message on my lockscreen (and other people are the reason that I use a 9-digit PIN).
I commend you for your honesty, but unfortunately I can't provide assistance.
It could have been stolen, which would explain the absence of a SIM. Maybe the previous 'owner' couldn't do anything with it either and gave up.
You might be able to flash a new ROM, but everything would be deleted...and you'd still not have the owner's info.
Good luck, sir and thank you for your honesty!
No phone numbers??? Try syncing with google... see if there are any email addresses or ANYTHING on the phone... Very honest though hats off...
I once found a phone like you did but found loads of pics of him cheating on his wife :S there was a message with HER address on so I delivered it.... I wonder what did happen to them lol
Just hand it into a cop shop or train station that you found it at...

For something like this I'd exhaust all possibilities to find the owner personally first, otherwise the Lost 'n Found will "lose" it, even PD's "lose" stuff. The owner is lucky that someone whom doesn't want to keep it, or sell it, has found it.
Edit: although without a sim card it's probably a drug mule's phone and you should bring a gun to the meet just in case.
Done a factory reset, Which says it will wipe data. It failed, Now I can look at teh pictures and try figure out who they are. More childrens movies on the internal stornage
Woah, how kind of you wanting to return the phone.. Only one thing comes to my mind - all phones should be trackable by their IMEI - perhaps try flashing a full wipe base ROM via ODIN (maybe pulling all the data you can thru adb first?), and perhaps try contacting samsung officials in your country about a found phone?? That is if the guy was fortunate enough to create a samsung account or something that could identify him..
EDIT: Okay I found a thread, perhaps you can try running an ADB command like this to get the contacts database??
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-rescue-squad/30987-acquire-contacts-via-adb.html
Pulling the contacts database is good but if adb wasn't already enabled you would have to root it with cf-root then boot into recovery and run the adb commands from it since adb is enabled in recovery by default *may have to mount data partition*
Pin is stored in the EFS folder, and no factory reset or firmware flash will touch that. Messing with EFS can have dire consequences if corrupted (no IMEI = no network connection).
But if no choice, take a look at Hellcatdroid's solution with
ADB here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1476634
Edit as previous poster, maybe even flash a Chainfire CF-Root kernel, and then boot into CWM recovery. Mount partitions, and use windows program "Android Commander" to file explore any system partition for more info. The EFS could backed upped and even deleted. But risks outlined earlier.

Not been clamped on anything, On the phone there were several named files of a child (baby xxxx and little zzz stuck the names together then I looked on facebook the woman had made the boy a facebook and from there I checked her pictures, Same person and told them about there phone.
She said it was nice of me to do so, Told to me to keep it as it had been replaced, But she would be greatful if she could get the pictures so On to a flashdrive and in the post they went.
So I now have a large MP3 Player.

I was nice enongh to not only try to get the phone back to the owner and data instead of being lost in the lost and found, People really shouldnt assume the worst.
Im still left with a GSII that was crushed by a bus but has a valid IMEI a GSII thats barred from network best I can do with it is use it like a iPod Touch. Or pull the battery for a spare in my Nexus.

Error message after restore using TWRP

Smarter guys-When I do restore using TWRP at top of screen Restore Complete with Successful under that. At the bottom of progress screen under Verifying md5 hash for I get the following:
E:Unknown backup method for mount
--Error occured. check recovery.log. Aborting.
However when I then reboot seems the ROM restored but few errors popped up but when clicked OK on them everything seems to work. Anyone know why this error shows up? My backups are saved on my External SD card if that makes any difference.
Thanks Guys!
Doc
Did do a search but could not find anyone else had this issue posted.
Any chance you are keeping your backups on your external storage?
I ask because a guy brought up the point that the md5 hash seems to corrupt when transferring to the card and back, thought it might be that causing your error

You are correct as that is the case. Can I transfer backups to phone storage or is it necessary to create new backups to be saved there?

well, i had the same thing from trying to root the phone. then i erased everything i could find to erase, and tried reflashing fastboot twrp.
after that, when i tried to flash the htc rom, it says md5 is not found, and boots into a white screen with green htc. that's it. nothing else.
can anyone tell me how to get this thing to find md5, and load a rom, any rom, i don't care which.

Ruined my phone, dead now, tried root with OTA update

Please help. Did the RegawMOD root (that thread should be removed, it could cause so much damage).
Got an error at very end of process. Accessed bootloader, it's Tampered and Unlocked. The phone is also worthless.
It cannot access the Sprint network, nor can it access data. When roaming on VZW's network, it shows nonsense processes in small text on the home screen, scrolling and appearing as procesess start.
It it destroyed or can it be repaired? Lectures about rooting after an OTA will be ignored, please keep this thread only filled with good stuff. Thanks wise people.
Did you try to run the ruu.you will lose root but its better than having a paper weight
Well your unlocked and have a custom recovery, so flash a Rom and find out

No it shouldn't. It works, if you didn't read and did something you shouldn't then that's on you. I have personally used that method when I first got my phone with no issues. Did you take the OTA and THEN try to root? If so:

Read as much of the over 60 page thread as I could, I made a mistake. Forget the error, something about RW. The small text is process stuff life system_server, surfacefinger, com.android.phone, etc, scrolling on right side of screen, as the process starts/stops, I guess.

Take the SD card out. Use adapter for SD card in your PC to put a rom on it. Go into recovery and flash. (I'm assuming you have the adapter of course) Hope you get it working. Good luck

[Q] Need Help Galaxy S3 Automatic Update Notifications

Good day,
Noobie doesn't begin to describe me. I just want to stop these update notifications on my phone and I've been trying for over a month with different instructions which usually ends when what I'm looking for isn't in the place where the directions said it was.
So five months ago I bought a rooted Galaxy S3 4.1.1 off eBay that I use on Boost mobile network. It was working when I got it in the mail and it still works great. Tried to contact the person I purchased it from but no reply. I like the phone the way it is, not trying to do anything fancy. Can someone please just lay out in simple (idiot) steps what I need to do to stop the update notifications that would be great? Thanks.

The sprint section you originally posted this in is the correct forum, however I'm not 100% on the fixes we use on our sprint phones will work for you and keep your phone working properly on boost. Anyway refer to that thread as one posted suggested accept the update and it will fail and let you live without the constant update pop ups, there's other fixes for it as well if that doesn't do the trick.

Should be fine bud, if you're rooted just make a backup first just in case... to get rid of the notification yourself (if you're rooted) just use a root explorer and navigate to system, look for a file called build.prop and edit it to reflect the new update... so if on mb1 change every instance of mb1 to mc3, save reboot to recovery, clear caches and reboot... if not rooted, nothing you can do about it unless you accept the ota update

From what I read it sounds safe to do, but honestly I'm even a bit iffy on it, most of the info is at least a few weeks old if not more. My guess is it will work and you'll be updated with more features than you have now, just afraid it could break something, like mms or voice mail.
In the boost mobile thread over in the sprint gs3 general section it looks like alpineman might be the best one to answer all the ins and out of this or perhaps others in that thread.

Lurk here a lot. Pretty much a noob at this stuff, but have managed to root and s-off both my original DInc and this Inc4g by reading and following directions. Remembering from the original DInc on how to stop the OTA, I did the same thing to this Inc4g, and haven't received any OTA notification (yet!).
Here is what I did(copied from a how to stop ota thread in original DInc forum)...
"To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates."
Hope this helps someone.
My brother & I both purchased our Inc4g's on same day. I rooted and s-off'd mine, he left his stock unrooted. His OTA came last week, I haven't seen one yet.

Btw, I used one of the alternate methods listed, did not try the first method listed, since it obviously for a different phone.
On stock, with root and s-on, I was able to freeze htc dm and htcdm with TiB. It was prompting me to update twice a day before I did it, regardless of how long I deferred. I haven't been prompted in three days with no adverse effects. Someone more knowledgeable than I will need to verify how safe it really is, but this worked for me.

There are two apps, htcdm and htc dm (with and without a space). They did not appear next to one another on my list, I had to scroll.
[edit] I also noticed that I froze htc dm command service, but the update prompt didn't disappear until I froze the two dm apps.
i have all 3 of those apps running viper... i'll try freezing them with TB... i've tried everything else.
I also checked to see about the 2 htcdm files mentioned above and realized in addition to renaming the otacerts.zip file I referenced earlier, is that I also did freeze the 2 htcdm files using TiB.
As of right now, I still have not received the update notification.
Stock, rooted, and s-off.

i'm afraid to post this - but a day and a half now the nag has not popped up since i've frozen the 3 files mentioned above. :knockonwood:
i've done all the other normal stuff that should work (i really don't understand why my build.prop changes are not working). i did get the viper illegal rom nag - but that only happens once a week so i can deal with it. getting the verizon nag each time i turned on the phone was getting old.

the venom guys have discontinued support for the viper rom for our phone. however, they have protection built-in to help stop devs from stealing their code... unfortunately it is now tagging us as running illegal roms and gives us a nag screen once a week. there's info about it in the viper rom thread.

Neither the Viper nag, nor the Verizon OTA have appeared even once for me since I updated to ViperLTE 2.2.0. (I did turn off the check in settings, which I believe was added in 2.2.0)
