Custom Recovery Problems - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I was hoping someone could help me as i'm having quite some trouble with my custom recovery boot on my GSM HTC Hero...
The problem is that regardless of what i do. after about 5mins while in my recovery bootloader (amon ra's v1.6.2), the bootloader will simply freeze up or reboot itself and hang on the HERO bootscreen...
I've tried reinstalling the recovery bootloader.
Tried installing clockworks recovery bootloader and reinstalling amon ra.
I just installed HTC's official firmware and rerooted my HTC hero.
But to no avail. It will still freeze or reboot and hang after about 5mins of use when in recovery mode...
It's troublesome because i'm afraid to upgrade my radio to the latest version since if it freezes while flashing i might brick my phone... And i don't want that.
I'm clueless as to what i should do next.. Does anyone have any clue as to what is happening, or even having experienced it before and found a solution?
Hope anyone can help.
Best Regards
Kuresu

Post an adb logcat to pastebin and a dmesg| tail as well

Any chance you could tell me how i do it.
I can never seem to get logcat to work when in recovery mode.

Anyone at all? :x

Most guides on creating goldcards give instructions on how to set up Android sdk on your pc/laptop, once that is done its not hard to do a logcat. Google is your friend.

No longer able to update to custom 2.1 roms??

Hi, I've had lot's of problems with my HTC recently, no adb access etc, device not being recognised and recovery playing up, ie not being able to wipe install roms etc... however I fixed the recovery issue and managed to do a nandroid backup, I put on I think it was 1.5 HTC sense hero rom... and recently realised that i can only flash 1.5 roms, not 2.1 anymore? would any developer know what would of caused this problem? Any 2.1 rom just locks on the Hero logo, and I've left it for over an hour in some cases and nothing happens. Again, I used to be able to put on any custom rom.... I'm all out of ideas.
wipe
did you wipe? what recovery image you using etc etc?
1. post in the correct section.
2. remove the ext4 partition from your sdcard, or change it to ext2 or ext3.
3. get adb logcat, otherwise this is like the question "my car won't run, can anybody tell me why?"
I have wiped numerous times... sorry for the "my car won't run type question etc...." just that I've done my research, gooogled, posted detailed info previously on here and another forum, I even fixed my own problem of the recovery image, without fixing that I would have nothing. But anyway the card is partitioned with swap, ext2, fat32 using the latest Amon_Ra image 1.6? something... i've spent weeks trying to resolve this and learnt a lot along the way.
Obviously not where to find the adb logcat... don't worry I'll google it.
Apologies for posting in the wrong forum, if it can be moved could a mod do so?

Thanks for your reply, I will approach this method again at some point and give it a try, but I think I read somewhere that I couldn't do it for whatever reason, but I'll look into it again seeing as you've had the same issues. Thanks.

Actually I believe I didnt attempt this because I was no longer able to get my HTC hero working with ADB, as soon as I plug the device in, it comes up as device unrecognised, so I think goldcard method it out.. :-(
on the risk of offending you again (even though i am trying to help here...): you did not provide really much valid info. for most things you just said "doesn't work". what happens if you start by pushing home+power? saying the recovery doesn't boot up tells what does NOT happen, for a diagnosis we need the info what DOES happen.
anyway, if i get you right your recovery is now working. now repartition your sdcard (ext2 and fat, NO swap), do a full wipe, then install the rom you desire to use, then move the log to sdcard ("other" in recovery). reboot your phone and execute "adb logcat > c:\logcat.txt" on your pc. if it doesn't boot up after five minutes stop logcat with ctrl-c and post the two logfiles (recovery.log and logcat.txt). you need to set up adb, if you have problems with that sort them out, there is no way to get any information about your problem without the log.
oh, and about the goldcard: i don't know too much about goldcard'ing, but i can't see how this should help here. my strongest guess is that the swap partition interferes with the boot process...
No worries no offence taken. Pushing Home+Power works and takes me to recovery. Back+Power takes me to bootloader and USB Bootloader device is recognised, so I am able to get Fastboot.
Just recently installed stock rom, to see if that solved the USB and ROM issues but no such luck, re-rooted, put anom latest recovery back on, and went on to do what you have advised to help.. i've attached only the recovery.log in zip format only, as when doing adb logcat command use mentioned(after installing new rom), all I get is "waiting for devices" whilst the phone is stuck on the Hero logo, I waited about 10 minutes, exited from the adb, and the log file was empty as I guessed. I've tried every possible way that I found on the web to try and get the ADB function working again and I realise this is important to get some info.. but I've ran out of ideas for that.
Maybe the recovery(attached) may show something, all I noticed is that the cache and something else was not wiped for some reason? If you or someone has time, have a look through maybe someone knows what is going on.
Thanks for your help and patience

[Q] Help!! will buy in return

i dont have very much free time atm. i have a nexus s 4g running cm7 nightly #65... the situation is i was flashing a new rom and ended up hitting my phone off the arm of the chair.. needless to say the battery came out and now im stuck with the cm7 bootloop.. i can hboot but when i try to enter recovery i get a loop on the google screen with the unlocked logo... i have downloaded adb but im not familiar with it at all. my sdk file is under C:\documents and settings\temp\desktop\android-sdk
ive spent all my free time the past week searching for a solution... my phone was used for work and i recieved all my fire calls on it now its usless and about to go out the window and visit verizon.... if someone could help me fix it i will donate. i used to love trying to figure this stuff out but being so rushed around its just frustrating
Might be able to help
A couple questions to start off:
What method did you use to root your phone?
Have you tried flashing the recovery image again or know how to do it on your phone?
I have a Nexus S 3g and pieced together different tutorials for using ADB to flash the recovery image. I just read a tutorial that seems exactly the same for the 4g model. If you can get into the bootloader you might be alright if you just flash the recovery image again from there. But, setting up ADB can be tricky from my experience. Let me know.
Maybe if you follow the guide in the cyanogenmod wiki to install the recovery.
Heres the link:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nexus_S_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
i cant get into recovery it gets stuck looping the bootlogo and if i go threw hboot/recovery it loops the google screen.
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-crespo4g.img... i have this in the sdk file with fastboot. and it just reloads the adb commands when you start adb
that command should work. maybe its how you input it
i highly doubt it if this will work but try fastboot flash recovery "recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-crespo4g.img"
Yeah fastboot should work as it is a different partition than the recovery one. And since cm7 flash doesn't touch that partition (I hope) you shouldn't have any problems with it. Make sure you follow the instructions very carefully on that link I posted. Start over if you have to. I've spent hours on things like this, and you will get frustrated but if you keep at it, you'll get it eventually.
it doesnt effect it that it was the kernel flashing when the phone fell? i was running cm7 for awhile before this happened
Sorry Ive been really busy and haven't been able to get on I used the pdanet method I've tried reflashing but still no luck I think I'm doing it wrong

[Q] Constant reboot and a few almosts

Ok, this is my first post so be gentle. I tried to root my sons phone and now it's useless. I went thru HTC's website to unlock bootloader due to having HBOOT 1.5. I'm unlocked and thinking life is good but, I loaded several different ROM's and get the same result. It starts to load the ROM and reboots, sometimes it goes into a safemode with the Viper Rom. I've been jacking with this for 2 days and need some help. I can't find a good link for the RUU or PG86...bla bla bla, I would take it back to stock and surrender but, can't even do that. I've installed TWRP and CWM, just to try different stuff, but get all the same reults.
I think you need to flash the boot.img separately. I'm not sure though. There's a thread for flashing with 1.50 somewhere in the development section
We're comin from a pure power source.
I am having the same issue here, I installed several ROMS, it works for a day, but then the reboot attack starts. Constant lockups and random restarts, sometimes 3 reboots in a row.
ROMs I tried to flash:
1. Xperia XE
2. Titan Trinity 3 HD
3. Nocturnal Adrenaline 1.0.2
Maybe it's the kernel, is there a list of kernels that I can flash?
This worked for me
My phone kept rebooting after root before, but I managed to fix it. This will only work if you can get into fastboot. Download the ruu file located here and run it while in fastboot. This will unroot your phone if you have S-On. After that is done, if it still loops, take out the battery and count to five, then put the battery in and hold the power button on the phone until the phone starts to turn on normally. That fixed my problem, hope it fixes yours. You may have to update after you get your phone started and you will lose all your data. Sorry about the link, I updated to one that has a working download.

Unroot my phone?
Is it possible to re-root it?
Thanks all for the posts. I will give some of this a shot and see what happens. I can get to fastboot, and have loaded a couple of things thru the cmd prompt to try and help, but nothing so far. I'm not really sure if the kernel thing is what's stopping the roms for loading. I can't get the S-OFF, I'm unlocked. I can send anything I want thru the cmd prompt, and also flash zips thru twrp or cwm. Would like to start over but ca't even find a way to do that. Thanks again for the posts.
Cardmastr, we're on the same boat, pg86 takes forever to download, so as I'm waiting patiently, keep me in on the loop with what you're doing.
RUU didn't cut it, kept failing. have not found an image file to flash thru the cmd prompt. Still no luck. What can I throw into fast boot that might help me?????!!!!!!
When I started flashing after using HTC Unlock, I ran "fastboot boot recovery.img" - which booted TWRP with the necessary permissions. Then I wiped everything and flashed the ROM. Haven't had any issues with the ROMs I've tried.
Which recovery did you install? Twrp 1.1.1 is your best bet.
The 2.x version twrp or cwm do not okay nice with some phones.
S3nt from my 3D wond3rland
I used the TWRP 1.1.1. Might of messed up with some of the cmd prompt stuff I'm going back thru.

Bricked after Booting new ROM in Boot Manager Pro

I was running infectedROM Sense 3.0, and I had successfully set up several other ROMs via boot manager previously. Today I just installed Playground ICS to an SD slot through boot manager and I backed up my phone ROMs boot img and clicked reboot to playground. The phone rebooted and showed the splash screen. After about 10 seconds on the splash screen, it shut off and won't turn back on. No charge light, regular boot and vol down + power both don't work. All I need to do is get to recovery, then I have to flash the update.zip for my phone ROM in the bootmanager folder. Can anyone help me get into recovery or the bootloader?
edit: I installed playground by installing the zip, and I didn't install any other mods/kernels on top of playground. On the other ROMs I have installed in boot manager, I installed them via a nandroid backup.
If you look through the last few pages of the Playground ICS thread, it is an issue and can be fixed, but its not that easy unless you know what you are doing. I hope you have a linux box.

Do you know how many times I tried to brick this thing when I was downgrading? I almost gave up! And you do it by accident? Lucky you
Edit... Sorry bout your luck, hope all goes well.
no luck so far, I opened windows sda13 thru sdk13 and none of them found the device. i guess i'll reboot and try sda13-sdz13 lol.
Just took my phone to a sprint store, after about 30 min the repair guy came back and handed me the phone. He told me he doesn't have the tools necessary to fix it so I need to come back tomorrow, but he said I'm going to have to lose all my data in order to get the phone working again using his method. I hope the emmc_recover works tonight, or tomorrow I'll probably have hboot 1.5 and s-on
Is it possible that emmc_recover won't work because I'm on the engineering hboot?
I just realized I should probably post in the downgrade hboot thread, so I'm doing that now.
EDIT: fixed my phone flawlessly, the only reason it didn't work the first time is I forgot to pull the battery before plugging it in. Thanks again for your guys' help!
Post-trial of ICS Playground
w0rd,
I had the same problem with my EVO after playing around with this as well. For all others that may have this problem here was my solution...
Symptoms:
After trying to re-flash from ICS Playground to another ROM my phone was stuck at the HTC splash screen and would not do anything. I restarted into recovery and was unsuccessful; even tried to recover to my original files and after that it passed the splash screen and then the screen went black.
Resolution:
Finally used fastboot into recovery and flashed another ROM and it worked. Morale of the story use fastboot from your computer to get into recovery and Flash your ROM.
Hope this helps...

I appreciate the reply. However, the problem I had was with one specific release of playground which bricked my phone once installed. I couldn't boot into recovery or the bootloader; the screen wouldn't turn on no matter what. Fastboot won't work from this state. The only way to unbrick at that point without going to a sprint store is to use the emmc_recover tool that's part of the hboot 1.5 downgrade process (in case this happens to you or anyone else, you have to follow step 3 ONLY in the downgrade process in order to recover from bricking your phone)

Just curious. How do you know it was a specific release, and did it happen to anyone else? Do you know the cause of it?

The links netwokz provided above showed me that it was a specific release. TwistedUmbrella was experimenting (and I downloaded the experimental ROM, not one of the more "stable" releases) to try to get usb mount to pc to work, and something was wrong in the build I downloaded because it wiped the emmc so I couldn't boot to the phone, recovery, or bootloader. Basically, the ROM bricked my phone in the same way that you're supposed to brick your phone when downgrading from hboot 1.5. Luckily, Twistedumbrella is a great dev who helped people who bricked their devices out. In case you're worried about running into the same issue I did, the build that bricked me is no longer online, as he's updated the experimental and regular download links.
I know it was a specific release because I wasn't the only person who reported this problem. I think it was the 1 am experimental build from 03/22. Anyway, I'm now downloading twistedumbrella's latest experimental. Back to the ROM flashing game
With boot manger they say you must be running the same os as your phone rom or you could brick it. If your phone rom is GB I would recommended running GB roms instead of ICS roms

I haven't had any sort of issue from running an ICS ROM in boot manager while running a sense 3.0/3.5 ROM as my default OS. This reported brick was caused by one specific release of playground ICS that would have bricked my phone in the exact same way if I just installed it through my recovery instead of through boot manager. Boot manager wasn't at fault here.
This thread was resolved several days ago. Can I close this thread or something? I've never tried to before so idk how to go about doing that...Well in the meantime, I guess I can just hope nobody else decides not to read page one before posting...

Stuck in bootloop!

Hello, my Droid DNA is currently stuck in a bootloop. I was stupid and flashed a wrong version of a rom on my droid dna. (NOS M7 verizon patch on gsm version) The DNA currently has super cid, is s-off, unlocked bootloader. HBOOT 1.33.0001. It has TWRP v2.6.0.0.
I tried to use adb sideload but my device isn't recognized? Stuck on "starting adb sideload." I also tried adb through recovery and fastboot but the device is not recognized either. The phone was running Beastmode reloaded kernel with NOS M7 v3.0.3 before I flashed the verizon patch onto it. I currently have no idea how I can fix the phone as almost all the solutions require me to get the device to recognize.
Also, I'm not sure if USB debugging is on? Does USB debugging stay on after a factory reset?
What I did:
1. Factory reset phone
2. Found out my pictures/music/other things were still on it after so I went into TWRP and wiped everything[including my working rom.zip :crying: ] except the system. Phone booted up fine. I found out that all the google applications were missing so I decided to maybe reflash the rom. I was careless and accidentally flashed on the verizon version on my gsm device. Now stuck with the bootloop problem etc.
I turned on USB debugging before all this factory reset/wipe business so will it still be on after all this? If so, I can maybe try and reinstall drivers etc and all that stuff to maybe get it recognize but so far nothing is recognizing it so I'm starting to doubt whether USB debugging is still on. Sorry for the long text! Just wanted to make have as much detail.
UPDATE:
Phone has been fixed! The phone wouldn't be recognized on any of my windows computers but was instantly seen on my friends macbook pro. I just went adb sideload and flashed on the new rom and its all good now. This thread can be closed now. Thank you!
I had this issue at one point where I didn't have anything to flash after rooting and flashing the recovery and all. The ad sideload did not recognize my phone either. What I was able to do is an ruu flash to stock. I am not as experienced with it so I would suggest asking someone else for specific instructions on it.
