Hi,
Using the old HTC wwe RUU (I've tried the two different recommended ones from the guides here at unlockr and Modaco) the RUU goes to the bootloader then on the PC is says 'waiting for bootloader' which then goes to error [171] USB connection error after about a minute (handset displays USB RUU). I've got adb and all the drivers. What am I doing wrong, I establish a sync with HTC sync (latest version ) before launching the RUU? Can I use Droid Explorer to help me or are these RUUs the only way of getting an old ROM on?
Can anyone suggest anything?
Thanks
Matt
I've trawled the forum with search but can't find a resolution.

You are probably running the wrong driver. Follow my driver guide part iv. (You should be on My HTC not ADB driver)
If not then probably your gold card hasn't stuck (check it) or you'll need to use windows xp instead (can use a virtual machine).
I had this issue when using windows 7 64 bit.
Download the drivers in the attachment in the noob guide. Then reboot your phone into the htc bootloader (power on while holding back button).
Then connect your phone to the pc and use device manager (have disk) to install the drivers you downloaded. then run the HTC RUU with the phone still in the htc bootloader.
The drivers had to be installed whilst I was in the bootloader for it to work for me.
Might be worth adding this to the noob guide?

Depending on whether this works for this guy, might be a simpler method than the alternative.
@msiviter - please try the above quoted method first
I had this issue, and the solution for me was just to swap to a new computer, and it installed instantly
Try This
While trying to flash the RUU the phone reboots.
When it is rebooted you see RUU.usb on your phone screen. But no flash process.
While phone is still connected to pc and is still in RUU.usb mode.
Go to device manager on your pc. Right klik android devices and renew the USB driver to HTC driver.
Reboot computer and reboot phone.
then try to flash again.
This was the solution for me.
Tried all the above, spent 6 hours on it, I've got the closest by going to a (win7 64bit) pc that has never had the sdk on it then the RUU goes further but terminates with error [140] Incorrect Bootloader. I've made my goldcard again to no avail (Sandisk 512mb) and checked the goldcard data which was OK, I'll try it tomorrow on a different (Kingston 8gb) card.
Any other ideas?
Thanks for your help so far.
Matt
Update: New SD card and goldcard now gives 'Error [131] Incorrect Customer ID' on my Win7 x64, I'll try on my dads old XP laptop later!!!
I suspect it is a windows 7 issue. On the first attempt I managed to downgrade when I moved to my Vista machine.
I must have tried for about 6 hours with Win7 then moved back to my old Vista PC and it worked first time.
From observing the process on Win7, when the phone boots to the bootloader, the RUU program then gives it 180 seconds to confirm Bootloader is loaded "waiting for bootloader...1-180sec". Looking at the system tray the USB driver that is used for HTCsync disconnects and the device now says it is Android 1.0 and Win7 needs to find a driver for this. Win7 fails to find a driver for "Android 1.0" so it never allows propper communication between the phone and the computer.
(There are separate Win7 64-bit drivers - check you are using these?)
P.P.S. The stock card that came with the phone worked fine as a Goldcard for me and I think most people.
OK I've now tried on a sp3 x86 XP machine and I still got Error [140] and [131] whether trying from phone synced to pc or phone booted in Fastboot USB.
I've given up. I'll wait until June!

You installed the latest version of HTC Sync while your phone was unplugged/ Then you plugged the phone in to detect new drivers. Waited for the drivers to successfully install and then ran the RUU?

What drivers are reading in device manager when in the normal os? And same question when in fastboot mode?
I did exactly that on my win7 x64 and xp mce sp3 x86 pc's both had 'My HTC' in Device manager and had a sync relationship established with the latest 'Legend' HTC sync software.
Both gave the almost random error messages although now the bootloader almost finishes now so I'm past the [171] usb (driver) errors and I'm on [131] and [140] errors which pertain to bootloader and incorrect customer errors which I think are goldcard related. Although like most people I do rush through things and not read instructions! I've now made 4 goldcards via the various guides and I'm sure they are OK.
My Bro is getting his desire this week and I was determined to beat him to eclair but it looks like I'm in the lap of the T-mobile gods waiting until June (or july....September.... December etc).
Matt
I have same issue with msiviter, CUSTOMER ID ERROR.
I was able to run RUU regarding to guid from btdag (section IV).
What can I do now?
try deleting the drivers and then starting again perhaps?
I have the same issue here, can't downgrade to the previous Orange RUU, also using Win7 x64.
Have tried reinstalling drivers, and using other ROMS, nothing seems to work. I also find that when I run the RUU it loses connection to my phone before it even tried rebooting the phone into the bootloader.

this is how i've done 2 of mine, 2 dev laptops on 2 differnt hero's ... didnt work, with adb, sdk everything loaded for android dev ...
desktop worked fine for both hero's.
Same Issue
The trick to get the RUU to actually update the phone, for me, was to make sure that in Device Manager the ADB Interface driver was showing "My HTC" and not "HTC Bootloader". I was able to switch between drivers using the update driver button, and didn't need to download any new files or specify a folder or anything.
use windows xp and try my method of downgrade from 2.1 in my sig.
Hi Guys
I'm having a nightmare attempting to root my friends Hero. I've rooted several before with no issue, both generic models and network branded models, made goldcards and never had problems. This time though...completely stuck.
I've tried this on two different PCs (Windows 7 and Vista) and each time when I go to run the RUU (tried generic and the Orange UK version) and each time I'm getting the 170 USB error.
I've Googled for a solution and each time the solution is to get the newest version of HTC Sync but I definitely have that installed. The Android SDK is there, I've had USb debugging off and on and each time it's the same thing. I've been in every USB port on both PCs with no luck.
Has anyone got any ideas? Or is there a way to do the process on Linux?
Bump?
Any ideas guys, tried again yesterday and still nowhere.
Have a look at BTDAGs guide linked in my signature, read the FAQ at the bottom of the first post,...
There might be a solution to the error msg your getting.
...if not, I'd uninstall all drivers and any HTC stuff, reboot, then start again.

Did you try to follow my guide? I have re-written it so that this doesn't happen any more (hopefully).
Can someone help me get my HTC One to be recognized by Windows. I can get it recognized when the phone is booted into the system but once it hits the bootloader it shows this error:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
A request for the USB BOS descriptor failed.

are you possibly using a USB 3.0 port? if so use a 2.0
I've tried using both and no luck either way.

You could always do what I ended up doing; get an Ubuntu Live CD and run it without installing, download the sdk, and run adb/fastboot commands that way.

This is a very good suggestion and Ubuntu 13.04 installs beside Windows 8 pretty easily. As long as you get into the bios and turn secure boot off and then change the boot order to put your CD image or sd drive first.
It is probably the easiest way if to don't have a Windows 7 machine laying around. That's what I had to do myself. I didn't feel like installing the sdk on my Fedora partition right then so I hijacked my wife's computer.

see this thread... it helped me solve my Win8, 64-bit, USB issues, including fastboot.
I have problem with HTC One flashed Stock RUU with Google edition and can't see mass storage. In device manager Android device: My HTC -this is ok, but MTP driver is not found, i had tried everything.
Windows 8 x64. I tried 2 different win8 x64 machines and same problem. Few weeks ago I ran's win7 and ARHD 12.1 then working well. All started in win8.
In Windows 7 x64 no problems at all. Windows find automatically driver or update new driver both working.
Can anyone recommend something?
Cheers !
hey everyone, so ive have went thru all the threads i can find, done alot of research and have come up short. seems like alot of the users with the Verizon I605 Samsung Note 2 have the same problem, not connecting to their PC's.
-ive restarted both my note 2 and my PC numerous times.
-ive installed/uninstalled/re-installed the official Samsung website device drivers
-tried other USB ports
-tried up to 4 different USB/Mini USB cords
-made sure USB debugging was switched on
-Tried Samsung Kies, come to find out it doesn't support the I605 Note 2
-called Verizon and Samsung directly and both actually offered me a position as a tech after i told them all the things i did to figure it out, because it was way more then they could handle.
i know it has connected before, as i have done it once or twice a few weeks back but now it wont connect, drivers fail to install, and nothing else works. i have also tried every other method mentioned in the other threads. nothing has worked.
is there any fix for this? was it cause by the latest update?
im running 4.1.2/ VRAMC3
and im using Windows 7
please anyone lmk if there is a fix for this. ive exhausted all avenues known to me. thanks in advance.
Happened to me too, it's USB port in your computer. If you have any other computer or laptop try using that.
You can also try wireless connection for file transfer.

Hope you found your answer. If not have this moved. This was posted in the sprint version of the note 2 forums.

The appropriate forum would probably be more helpful.
Plus, are you getting any error messages? I've had issues with connecting the Sprint GN2. If I install the Samsung Drivers, I get a "Missing Hardware ID" error. I just found it's better not to install drivers. Let Windows install what drivers it can. Not all the drivers will install and will get an error message about device not successfully installed. But enough install that the GN2 will connect so you can move files around for MTP. See a thread I did back in December, linky
Also, you can try out SG Flash Drive Enabler. I've tried it out. It works pretty well. It has quirks, but does allow you to use your SDHC card as a flash drive. You have to use the MTP to access the phone's storage.
oh man...*face palm* sorry about posting in the wrong forum guys, i was about to crash and i didn't even realize. my mad.
MODS: please move this to the correct Forum section at your earliest convenience, thanks :silly:
i have found that airdroid does work for wifi file transfers for such things as pictures, music...etc. but im wanting to root my note 2 and it needs a direct line from the phone to the pc to work.
ill check out those links posted up and see what how it goes. but we still need a fix for this. kinda lame only (well most) the verizon SN2 is having this problem.

You may want to use ToolKit. I believe it's setup for AT&T tool. Uninstall KIES and all the samsung driver on the your PC. Choose to have ToolKit install the drivers. It should get your enough connection for ADB to work and be able to root and install a custom recovery. I had to use it a couple days ago to get a custom recovery back on the GN2 and I was getting the Missing Hardware ID error and still worked.

Ive done that very process. Uninstalled kies and installed the toolkit drives. Some reason it would sort of connect but then disconnect. Never stayed on and wasnt able to be picked up as connected on the Odin program.

Kies was un-installed per instuctions on the toolbox. i guess i could try and re-install it and retry everything.

i am going to try to download a older driver that was working before and see if that works. its linked near the bottom of the above posted link in one of the replies. ill come back with results.
ok so i downloaded the samsung drivers version 1.4.6.0 and followed the directions on the link i provided above. the drivers installed successfully, but the CASUAL(R515b) No You Verizon! program doesn't seem to see the phone connected to the computer. and just continually loops. sigh...this is getting to get stupid. such a simple task yet its not connecting.
EDIT: the drivers SAY they have installed successfully, but the computer still doesn't recognize the phone is connected. even reads on the phone that the software wasnt found to connect to the computers, and the CASUAL program also tells me that the phone isnt connected....sigh...seriously....WTF.
When you install your driver's on your pc you need to restart your pc...have you tryed that?

While Kies does not officially support the VZW Note 2 it is the only way me and my friends can get our PCs to see our Note 2s, that's the only reason I ask and it is usually par for course. Its what's suggested in these cases if it isn't already installed. It can hurt to give it a shot and see if it helps anything, if not you can just uninstall it again.

I am having trouble getting my windows 8.1 pc to recognize my Droid DNA. I installed android SDK, installed HTC Sync then removed it it so I would still have the drivers. I have tried universal drivers and another tool I found on the thread but to no avail anybody who knows how to get the device recognized on windows 8.1 and knows how to root the phone could answer. Help would be appreciated. I have went through the process on other htc phones but this one is a little complicated.
