I was using my phone today and was making a lot of calls to the same place and was really annoyed on how there is no fast way to redial your last dialed number.
What im thinking would be really helpful for nexus one users is to have a long press on the back button be a shortcut to call the last number dialed.
Now, i dont have much programing skills for this kind of job so i was wondering if i can get a developer willing to look into this.
Thanks!
or maybe force close app?
I agree. the return button should have a function to force stop from an application. or I need to do it everytime in Manage Applications settings page..

this would be sweet too. maybe there could be an option ib this app or w/e to do one or another?
Actually there is a quick way to redial. If you look at the modified Phone.apk that Cyanogen uses in his ROMs, I believe its by cytown not too sure, he has an options in your settings where if you hit the call button it will retrieve the last dialed number

My thoughts exactly.
I dunno if either option would utilize the back button well. I mean there's an app on the market called force close and it puts a shortcut in your notification panel. Just pull down the panel and hit the force close button and ur done. Though this is not accessible with apps/games that take up the whole screen, it will work with majority of the apps. I agree that it should have a function but not sure what exactly. What about an undo function? Maybe if u unintentionally paste text or delete text, just press the button to undo. Keep sharing your ideas.

To redial, just hit the green phone button again without looking up a number.
POOF the numbers there..
Same on all phones, just hit talk again and it works.. (FROYO 2.2 confirmed)
Why not just make it remapped like we did on the G1 with the Camera button where its anything we want? It shouldn't be that different from how we did it to the G1 anyways
bright idea!
looking forward to it

Neither of these will work on the Nexus. It has neither a call button nor a camera button. Best we can do is the search button. And there are already apps on the Market that allow you to set the search button to anything you want. So all we need is an apply that, on launch, queries the call log and sends an intent to dial that number to your default dialer app.

yes, but you still have to go to launcher, press phone, then press the green on-screen button...
I think the OP's goal is to have a shorter way to access functions that are buried for lack of hardware buttons

No worries, program an app IMO.
Agreed 100%
I would LOVE to see the back button applied as a force close function...
Or am I still going to have to go back to the home screen and tap the "End All Tasks" widget?
OP: Great idea in a slightly skewed direction... I think more users would benefit from a force close function.
Would it actually be a good idea? I have to say the back button is the one I probably spam, and I wouldnt want to force close my ebuddy etc just because it didnt register the gap between my multiple back pressings.
Some programs already build "exiting" by back button in. (e.g. tvguide, astro).
Having a force close function so readily available will just introduce more headaches to applications that use states heavily.

Hi,
Is there any way to use dialpad in full screen? The numbers are so hard to dial with one hand and I do not want to use "IPHONE ROM" ...
Any other solutions?
Thanks !
You could try a "touch" style dialer which have larger buttons...
Can you suggest me some?
All the "touch" ROMs I see here seems to have always the same "mid-screen" size. Even if the buttons are larger, I want like a "full screen" (or almost full) dialpad.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance !
I think that unless it is custom made, the dialpad cannot be a full screen program. I could try making a dialer but I'm not sure how to call the windows dialing app to make a phonecall...
A very quick program I just wrote.
All the artwork is rubbish, and I haven't yet implemented any complicated functions such as access to contacts/speed dialing. To use, install it and run "FSD". The green button dials the number, the back arrow removes the last number, and the red button deletes the whole number string. If you like it, tell me and I'll build on it, if not, I'll ditch it before I've spent any time on it!
Press the up button to close and the center button to call. ATM, you can't use the "Dial" Hardware button to start the call, and to end the call you must use the hardware end button...
FSD Download here: http://cid-cddbf77985693632.skydriv.../Programs/FSD-Full Screen Dialer/FSD 0.12.CAB
Man, it is fuking AWSOME...
My idea is to make something like the normal dialpad, but with less space between the top (the part where the cellphone operator appears) and the history.
If the history appears just on the top, the numbers could be bigger.
The buttons speedy dial and Call history do not need to exist, as we have a history list just on the top !
The TALK button still do not need to exist. Pressing the hard button to dial is ok.
Nice job man...if you improve it can you please send again, so I can test and helpo you with my new impressions?
Regards !
Oh, and I forgot to say: when I try to dial (even in the way you said) it gives me an error message:
Dialer.exe
win32exception
etc
this could shure become a verry nice dialer and it's also light in size if it would be functioning proberly I would use it for shure I also get that error mesage
Aah... I first implemented it using VJDialer, but then changed it to try to use the cprog.exe in windows... Maybe the command line options are not correct...
Try the attached version, which uses VJDialer to initiate the call.
iT IS WORKING NOW...
I realised that when I press so many times the "back" button "to delete numbers" the same error occur...but it is not "major" ...
Will you try to improve more the dialer???
[]´s
I will try to improve it!
I 've just turned off my PC so I can't rebuild the cab, but if you replace the dialer.exe in "program files/dialer" with the attached one, the backspace should now function fully. Also, if you press the red button twice, it should close.
Another version! This time the graphics change on a push. (They are badly done, but maybe someone with more artistic skills could re do them?).
This version installs VJPhone (thanks to vijay555) to make the call.
Also, if no number is in place, pressing the green button loads iContact, and pressing the Red button closes the app.

Here it is:
Let me know if you need this in some other format or if you have any changes.
I can also make a icon for the application.
That looks awesome! ATM, the program uses individual images for each button, so I shall split those up into individual buttons. Also, the "pressed" images are not generated by my program, so if you want to apply an effect when the buttons are pressed you can, or I'll just put some really crummy effect to show the difference between pressed and not...
One other point, the number is displayed as a text box with no transparency, so the background is not shown... I'm working on drawing the text on directly but that's not implemented yet...
Here you go, unpressed:
And pressed:
One more thing, I changed the white shadow of the display to the bottom, that way you can cut (or make transparent) the image, so you can show the numbers behind the image.
Nice!
I've just updated the code so that the app can reside anywhere...
I'll update the cab file with this skin!
Images are now split up, and the cab has been remade. (Now it has ATD support).
Do you have any objection to me posting this into the development and hacking forum (obviously with credit to you)?
I just made a little app this morning and just a thought of sharing it to you.

Countdown Timer
The countdown timer gives you time to decide on what you want to do (it's just 5 seconds anyway) and if you want to reset your device immediately, tap on the center button; and if you want to Cancel the reset, you can always tap the Left Red X button but if you thought you want to Shutdown your device, you will still have time to tap the right button.
What's with confirmation messages?
1 reason is, development standards..
And the idea was, you might statistically or probably 1 of 10 person accidentally tap the Cancel or Shutdown button.. So we want to confirm if the end-user really want to do that? So what we do is .. to ASK.
CONFIGURING JWMD Phone Reset
You can find a little file named "Settings.ini" somewhere you installed this application:
If in "Device"
\Program Files\JWMD Phone Reset
If in "Storage Card"
\Storage Card\Program Files\JWMD Phone Reset
Now open that Settings.ini
And you'll see (by default):
1|5|1
1st Digit: Enable/Disable Countdown Timer
2nd Digit: Timer Interval
3rd Digit: Enable/Disable Confirmation Messages.
So if you want to disable Countdown Timer and Confirmation Messages. You must have something like this.
0|5|0
To make the Countdown longer, e.g. 10 seconds
1|10|1
and SAVE. That's it.
HOW TO SKIN
There are 7 JPG files in %installpath%\JWMD Phone Reset\images folder:
Background.jpg
Cancel_Normal.jpg
Cancel_Tap.jpg
Reset_Normal.jpg
Reset_Tap.jpg
Shutdown_Normal.jpg
Shutdown_Tap.jpg
The image file names are pretty self explainable
Notes:
This doesn't hook the Power Button.
This is not Bug Free.
Compatible in this resolutions:
QVGA, VGA, WVGA, SqVGA
FUTURE:
Hook it on Power Button
Configuration UI
Comments and Feedbacks are much appreciated.

Ok, i've finally tryed, and it works perfectly.
But i don't really like the confirmation messages (for cancel, ...) and the auto-reset countdown. I would like to use it to shutdown my phone too, not to reset it everyday.
Thanks for this app', very promising in my opinion ! (and it could be better with french support but i know, it's a beta...).

Looks great, very nice work.
I personally would rather see this app do this : give option for 1) reset; 2) shutdown; 3) cancel. No countdown timer.
Again, good job.

cool app... love the layout.. but i am actually one of the users that despise the confirmation messages....
i had to go out and buy a reset app... which was saved in the middle of my phone on a quick link.. and right when i push it.. it resets the phone.. that i think is proper functionality of a soft reset button...
but for something that you created in a short amount of time.. this is very impressive work.. and i love the look of it.. good job mate
i work it on my hd2 well

hey all
I am looking for a widget that can simply turn the screen off, I press and the screen goes off.
I have searched but cant find anything that works
Thanks
I have seen a couple of apps in my travels go have a look in the android development I'm sure an xda member cooked one up a few weeks back,and from what i remember android does not switch off straight away like WM does it has a delay built in
I was looking for one of these some months ago.
I was told that there wasnt one which stopped the screen straight away, however I found on. UNFORTUNATELY, I can't find it again. (I am on my third Streak)
It wasn't badged as a screen off, but it was a single widget which locked the device (aka turned off the screen, as if you had pressed the power button)
I would love to find it again!

I don't see the point myself, why don't you just hit the power button
Yyhat link doesnt work no item found, the power button is in a weird spot for my liking and since i use no lock and open with th volume button
Then why don't you do a google search for an android app called 'scren off'

Pick up your android phone and go to somewhere called the 'android marketplace' you may even have an app already installed for that so no need to search for that thank goodness.
In the search bar enter 'sreen off' it should be at the top of the list
i have a question, maybe this is android related, maybe streak, not sure.
I come from WM6.5 background, so forgive me if this is a 'duh' question:
when I am listening to music, or recording or, anything really, if the screen turns off, it shuts the whole phone down. including wifi (loses connection)
is there a way to have the screen dim/off to save battery, but still be active.
biggest is music/recording. when I am recording something (meeting, etc) I have to force the screen to stay on in order for it to continue recording. same thing goes for uploading to youtube - i have to keep the screen on for it to continue it's connection.
Am I missing something??
Thanks for the help
try an app called "free power widget"
you can adjust the screen timeout so it is short or long
you can easily adjust screen brightness
you can adjust the wifi lock and a bunch of other settings.

There's something wrong with your connection, (that's your internet one, not the one within your head the connects your lobes together, especially the lobe containing common sense)
What you could do to stop you from losing your Wi-Fi connection when in sleep mode is try going into Settings -> Wireless controls -> Wi-Fi settings -> press menu button then Advanced -> then select Wi-Fi sleep policy and change the option to Never. This should I think keep Wi-Fi active when your screen is off (stops of the phone from switching to mobile data and by default is set to do so when the screen is off).

I am not an idiot
Coming from Windows Mobile, a SIMPLE power off app is hard to find on Android. I had one on my WM Touch Pro2 on my homescreen- simple tab and off.
Over the months of trying to find a simple FREE app- this is what I have so far encountered.
Screen Off .99 and Power Off .99- are available. But due to a so call security reason for Android, it will not power off the phone immediately- screen is off- but you can see the hardware lights on. I found another tip that you will have to modify an API to do so.
Yes, many, many, many, Google searches and this is what i found.
You can try a widget called Extended Controls. They are awesome and include a screen off widget, I use it all the time to turn my screen off.
Widgetsoid offers a hugely customisable power control widget which includes a screen lock button. It's working brilliantly for me on o2 2.2!

The more I think about it the sadder i get...Why do we need a dedicated multitask button? Long press of home would have been fine and they could have left a menu button or search key... Still excited about the phone but this has got me down a little.
Can we possibly remap the multitask button to menu or search when we get root/s off?
Using the One X, you'll find the menu button when needed, usually in the form of 3 vertical dots at the bottom of the screen, In apps that dont have menu.
The pain in the ass is the absence of the search button (it also has some UI presence like menu but still) Hopefully that gets tweaked.
XDA Since 2007...
I too use the search button more than I multi task.
I never use search but I'd rather have menu than dedicated multitasking. Long press home would do great
I was playing with the Att one X at Walmart and I really do like how they did the recent apps menu.
I had the same feeling about the keys changing, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that long press multitask button was search, so in okay with that...
I've never used the search button since I've owned the EVO 4G, but I often use the menu button and back button. I really rarely use the home button either. However, I'd agree that multi-tasking is an odd choice as a dedicated button. With Android's efficient methods of handling multi-tasking and memory-management, why do we need to access that screen so much? I don't see a good reason, and I don't see myself using it hardly ever.

Having multiple uses for one button is actually quite an intelligent idea that I would love to think that HTC had. We'll see - I hadn't read that anywhere but here. I suppose the One X forum would be a good place to check.

That is a great question I don't recall seeing asked or answered before. I don't personally use voice command but I'm curious about that as well.
To the OP. I feel HTC was just following suit with Google and they used the same buttons they have as default except its hardware based instead of software. Only downside is you can't change physical buttons dynamicly the same as software so we have to deal with the disappearing reappearing menu key. If Google gets their way app developers will change their design to fall inline with ics design language and you won't have to worry about that. Samsung interestingly chose to eschew the recent app button in favor of the menu button probably realizing this same design flaw. Of course if devs get their act together and update their apps then Samsung's menu button will be moot. If you have used Sense 4 on a Gingerbread phone you instinctively press menu but this is awkward for ics apps as their menu sometimes are towards the top instead of always at the bottom.

Honestly, I wish smart phones would come up with a dedicated Phone button... We're starting to veer away from the meaning of a phone. I would love a phone with a hard button I can press just to bring up the dial pad.
Physical buttons are a dying breed. What's your quarrel with a soft-key phone button?
A separate dedicated button shouldnt be locked down for only Google Assistant.
Any way to remap it?
+1 Anyone?
I'd rather map this to Dialler which I'd use far more widely compared to any other app.

Same here, did anyone fine any way ?
Not remappable yet. May be they'll change it via future updates.. highly unlikely imo.
So, here's the thing. I used an app called "Cometin" to try and remap the button. It didn't work (although, click and hold home button to summon assistant was successfully remapped) and when I got in toch with the developer, I was told,
"This appears to be difficult as the OS is calling google assistant directly."
If that's the case, I highly doubt it is possible to remap the button without root. I don't believe motorola will provide and update to allow remapping.
Disable Google Assistant Button
I hate this button. I wish manufacturers would stop shoving non customizable hardware bundled with unwanted software combo on to our devices. I guess this is the compromise that Motorola has made, in place of the usual plethora of software bloatware.
Is there a way to even disable this button? I read elsewhere that setting the 'default assistant app' to 'None', disables this button (instead of remapping it). Has anyone tried this?

Whoa, you mean you tried it on the one fusion+ and it worked? ? I guess I'll give it another go in that case

Well, I tried it again, and it still isn't working for me for the dedicated button. Can you confirm which version of the app & device software version you're using?
I got the same issue.
I'm guessing I'll end up sending it to a repair shop to remove the button or, Jesus, just glue it unpressed.
Cyanoacrylate should work, I'll let you know if I decide to go for it.
Whoa! No need for that! So I'm rooted and first thing I did was uninstall Google Assistant which makes it so pressing the button doesn't do anything. Also, I found the file that controls what the button does. It's "/system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl" the only problem is the stupid kernel is write protected so I can't actually modify the file...
Honestly I really hate this extra button and since its ther I'd rather remap it as a firing button for wither pubg or cod. Just hope these morons give the option to remap in a future update
So yeah, I have a working solution without having to root your device.
All you need to do is to install Tasker, either buy it or rip it, I don't really care.
After that, follow some easy steps:
0. Create a task containing two steps: switching to home screen (you'll need that to prevent endless cycle of entering your fav application again and again when you swipe/press back) and then launching your fav app.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
1. Then create a profile for Google app on the Profiles tab (not the Assistant app!) and assign your newly created task to it.
2. Save everything and enjoy.
The only little annoyances here are that you'll have to sacrifice the entire Google app in favor of another app, and also that annoying google beep at the launch.
Happy hacking, dudes and dudettes.
