Trackball issues - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so this is my third replacement for the trackball issue and this one is even worse than the rest of them. I don't know if its even worth replacing again but that would be my question. Is like to get one that I can use for more than two weeks which is how long I've had this one and its going nuts selecting things randomly and switching home screens on its own. Forget when its charging, its totally impossible to use when its plugged in. Anyone have any advice on this or should I just talk to Verizon again. After three replacements is rather not but almost impossible to use at times.

The magnets get messed up, its not the trackball. Avoid using the phone while plugged in to avoid the problem. I've had the same issue as well.

Trackball
Unfortunately, they laid out the circuit kinda stupidly in this phone for the charger. The USB port is right on the opposite side of the board that has the 4 electromagnetic sensors that sense when the trackball's magnetic fields change. I'd agree with the poster above me, it's definitely the magnetic field being interrupted by electromagnetic interference. I've been having the same issue as well. I think I just might try something drastic, like completely rebuild that circuit.

Same exact problem here... was considering replacing but I see that apparently this is a common issue.
Absolutely no way to fix? Is there a way to disable the track ball with root or something?

Yeah, I've been through 4 Eris' for the trackball issue. I finally talked Verizon into switching to MOTO Droid for free. It comes in Tuesday. I do like the Eris but have so many problems with it. Ive had this one for 2 weeks and had same issue it still looks brand new. Can't wait for new phone now. Thanks guys.

I should also say its not a device upgrade or anything else. They're doing a warranty swap for free to a brand new device. I kept calling them for almost two weeks and finally when I called the Verizon dealer near me they said they would do it for free. They initially wanted me to pay 289.00 for the MOTO Droid swap. I think they got sick of me. Lol

What do I tell AT&T for return?

My usb started going berserk and thinking it's in dock mode and randomly thinking it's charging when it isn't and disconnecting on the charger. The phone is rooted, custom rom and entropy kernel. I know they ask for all of that in warranty under about phone. What would KK6 be since I'll be returning to stock but not quite yet. Also is there a way I can talk my way into a new phone and not a refurb since I don't see how a clear defect warrants me getting stuck with a refurb phone. I've read on here there is a way but I can't think of where.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
I have never heard of a way to get a new phone vs refurb. I have gotten many replacements for smart phones through warranty, and while they were refurbished they all looked brand new. The warranty still lasts a year from the purchase date or 90 days what ever is longer.
I think you will have better luck getting a new one if you go in person vs phone call.
I have heard if you get 3 warranty replacements within 90 days of each other you can ask for a different phone, like a Note or vivid, etc.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
That sort of sucks... I've gotten replacements for "dumb" phones but they always come with a sticker inside covering imei and it's frustrating since I pay for a new phone. I've heard of the 3 phones and then qualifying for a new one and am considering a Note just for the size/stylus. My first smart phone (HTC Tilt) had it and I like it.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Just flash it back to stock and take it into an att warranty service center. They can swap it for a new one there. If you do it over the phone you're more likely to end up with a refurb. If they give you any guff at the store just act real offended and uppity, you shouldn't have any problem though.

May not be what you're looking for, but I had the same problem on my phone....USB thinking it was connected and wasn't, screen waking on its own, and other symptoms. Did a Google search, found I wasn't alone and came away with this fix.....
I dipped a small paintbrush in rubbing alcohol and swished it around in the USB port (powered down and battery out of course). Then I used canned air on it to make sure it was good and dry, powered back up and didn't have the problem again.
Now, I already had a replacement on the way, and went ahead and swapped out, so I don't still have the phone, but it worked fine for several days after I "cleaned" it out....even though I couldn't see any obvious debris.....and I rarely ever use the USB.
PS. A local AT&T rep gave me a number to call for a warranty replacement....unfortunately I can't find it right now...but surely a local store could give it to you.

I tried the alcohol thing and it seems to have helped. I'll see how it goes for a few days before calling in.
Can anyone with a stock UCKK6 rom give me the build number, kernel number etc from About Phone? Just in case.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
My SGII was doing the same thing and I used air to clean out the USB port but it didn't help. I did not try any cleaning solution. My phone was actually fixed by a factory reset. Turns out mine was something in the OS or some app combination was going bananas. No issues since and this was back before Christmas. My phone was stock 2.3.4 when all this went down.
But the advise to try and clean the port is good because there are a large number of folks that have corrected theirs that way. But if that doesn't resolve it then try the factory reset (after backups of course). Worked for me for what it's worth.
I had the same problem a few days ago. Running stock 2.3.4. A factory data reset fixed it. No port cleaning at all. So it seems, as others have reported, this could also be a software glitch.

Policy sucks
So I have taken advantage of the 3 swaps and a new model a few years back, actually got away with it twice, though it's described as a "One Time Exception" I had a buggy Samsung Epix WinMo phone, and decided to go HTC and they provided a Fuze (refurb, not new) - Well all the refurbs were a bit beat around, not at all up to the usual standards, and after a couple replacements of THAT, they asked me if I had tried a new handset. AND I LIED! I'm not proud of that, but I pay AT&T over $250 a month, and I DID pay for a top line phone. So they switched me up for a Tilt 2, which in 2009 was pretty slick.
Fast forward to 2012 - I had a few exchanges of my HTC Inspire 4G - A nice phone, but starting to feel a bit less leading edge. I WANTED a SG2 Skyrocket, but guess what? There is no more policy to switch handsets, they must have had too many people playing them for new phone models. I had to have an escalation done, and wait 72 hours for a response. The good new was, they approved me for a switch. The not so good was that they produced a list of what I could choose from. The Note was not on it, and it won't be on any list for a SG2 owner. I was making part of my claim that the 4G on Inspire sucked, had sucked from the beginning, and wanted an LTE swap out. Unfortunately, you don't get to speak with a rep to make your case (which I believe I could have) So they only offered other HSPA+ Models, some a real joke. Pantech Crossover anyone? Are you freaking KIDDING???
Typically, they offer what they consider "comparable" and crap-o-la, they did not consider the Skyrocket comparable. The best options they offered ME, were SGS2, and Infuse, as well as the ok, but gimmicky LG Thrill - Too much of a crap shoot, that one. So I did the obvious and got the SGS2 - I WANTED a 4.5" screen, but was NOT stepping back to the single core, Galaxy 1 based Infuse, as good of a phone as it was... LAST YEAR, LOL!
So the SGS2 they sent is sweet, but I will be making them send as many as it takes to get a perfect 1 (obvious scuffing on the bottom back where it contacts surfaces when put down on it's back.) They are going to wish that gave me a Skyrocket, LOL! Because I can claim defect until I get a perfect one. If they stop me for "slight wear and tear" I will switch up and claim something else is wrong. Dead pixel, capacitive button failure, I can come up with stuff all the live long day, mother ****ers! As I say, they probably should have sent me a Galaxy, heck A NOTE, even!
Just remember, all the Support Rep, and then Warranty Rep after that can do is exchange same for same, and refurb only. With the heavy use of plastics, the Samsung does not translate to a good refurb, the way the Aluminum Inspire did. Sigh. So it's a lot of work, but it's up to you. I may ask if I can pay the difference to step up to the Note, hehe.

Blown Earpiece I think

I think my EarPiece is blown. Severe low volume suddenly.
BT and SpeakerPhone works fine.
I have restored a backup from a month ago and it still is very low.
Since it's otherwise perfect and older HBoot I think it would be better to repair myself.
Before I rip it apart is there anything else I can check?
Is there a possible corruption on the Radio Side that the Backup would not have restored.
Has anyone else done this repair?
Thanks

That's the old issue of people not happy with the "Working" Volume.
Volume was fine since I got it.
Suddenly it dropped like 90%. I read one post that it happened in the middle of a call for someone.

I didn't want to get a Refurb. Which is what you'll likely get. I've read too many horror stories on those.
The part is only $10.00 and it does not look too bad to change.
You only need to go up where he folds the motherboard back before he starts disconnecting screen.

I had mine go out and honestly as long as you pay attention to replace it with the tabs (you'll see) going the right direction, it couldn't be easier to replace. Good luck.

Agreed with this
Its fairly simple to replace the earpiece infact it just sits in a slot and once you put on the board for the front facing camera it makes contact with it. screw it down and your done.
Dont worry about pulling the mother board back, as long as you take out the ribbons connected to the side of it (i cant remember but think theres 4 or 3) pull the mother board back and disconnect the 2 ribbons and a black wire.
Good luck

Yep... this is the problem I have as well... and is the prime example of how HTC quality has been crap for years now. I had this problem in the OG EVO as well. This is another reason why I am making the switch to Samsung as soon as they drop the SGS3 on us.
I had this exact same problem 2 weeks ago. Tried all the software hacks in the book to no avail, it's almost definitely your hardware. Sprint told me I could bring it in and they would replace the part for $35 (I don't have a protection plan). They said it would take them about an hour. HTC said I could send it to them and one of two things would happen: They would crack it open, determine it wasn't my fault, fix it, and mail it back free of charge OR they would crack it open, determine that it WAS my fault and either send it back still broke for $35 (inspection fee) or send it back fixed for "$60+". Either way HTC would have my phone for 6-8 business days. In the end, I bought the part off ebay for $7 and did it myself. It's really not too bad as long as you're careful with the motherboard portion if the disassemble. My speaker works flawlessly now. Good luck!

[Q] Some Atrixes without digitizer problems?

Hi all, I have read huge amount of threads about problems with digitizer in Atrix 4G. My question is - who has never had problems with it? And how long have you got your Atrix 4G?
i have my atrix over a year now, never had any digitizer problem nor other. i have also tested over 10 different roms (currently with atrix-mrom for having the best battry life on my humble opinion).

I never had any problems with mine.
I "inherited" it from my girlfriend a couple of months ago, and she bought it soon after it came out, so Feb or Mar 2011.
She never had any problems with it either, but she did have problems with her first one, I don't remember what exactly was going on, but I think it was digitizer-related. So she had it replaced about a month after she got it, and that's the one we have now. Like I said, no problems with it whatsoever (knock on wood).
You shouldn't really go by all those people having digitizer problems. It only makes sense you'll only ever hear from them. People not having any problems won't even bring it up. It's like trying to estimate if some device is reliable by reading on a forum about it, and then realizing there are a lot of people complaining about this and that problem, and then thinking "wow, I guess that device really has some issues". No it doesn't mean that! It's just that you won't ever hear from all the other people that DON'T have any problems.
Mine has it. But no phone is free from fault eh?

I've had mine (replaced by att warranty due to fault with a REPLACED digitizer I did) since January. No problems at all. Just picked up another on ebay, no problems. I also never overclock as it kills the processor quicker (I know this from my pc experiences) and heats up the phone.
The only problem my atrix have/had is a dead pixel, but it's just one, so it doesn't bother me much.
I never had any problem with my digitizer, my atrix is ~1 year and 3 months old. Never overclocked it.

Its a wear and tear part like the battery cover . Comes down to how hard the phone is treated during its life span. Like tires on a car if you drive like a mad man your going to be replacing tires much sooner than expected.
Or to look at it very literal. The digitizer is comprised of several layers and components. Most important is the Gorilla glass. All the shocks, bumps, pressing and shaking has to go somewhere right? That kind of energy is transferred threw hard surfaces like glass and is absorbed or redistributed by the foam adhesive the digitizer floats on but not all of it. Some gets to the ribbon and delicate connections where tear happens. That's why there is flex in the aptly named flex ribbon. Not perfect tech however.

After ICS update caller can't hear my voice

Hi all, after the ICS update yesterday, when someone calls or I call out, the other person can't hear my voice. I can plug in ear buds, with built-in mic and the other person can hear my voice ok. Wondering if there's a conflict somehow with the speakerphone? Been over the sound settings several times and can't find anything that applies. Any ideas or fixes? Thanks much

If your microphone stopped working immediately after the OTA, I'd call Verizon and have someone look at it and replace it.
If your microphone worked for a little while after the OTA, chances are your microphone just decided to give out.
Either way, I'd look to get it replaced. If its stock and unrooted, there's absolutely no reason for the microphone giving out to be your fault unless it has possible water damage.
Try checking the headphone jack with a bright light for something stuck down in the headphone jack.

RBarnett, thanks for the reply. The phone was working properly (my voice out) worked fine before the OTA update. No water damage. Just too much of a coincidence for the phone microphone to stop working immediately after the OTA, to my way of thinking. Sounds like good advice to have Verizon check it out.
No mic on Thunderbolt after ICS and app installs
Exact same issue here.
I updated my stock, undamaged, 2 year old, Verizon HTC Thunderbolt to Ice Cream Sandwich(ICS) last Tuesday evening. That evening I found out my phone mic was not working. Callers could not hear me, but all else was fine. Speaker phone did work. Love the Bolt and ICS looks and feels great.
I went to the local Verizon store and the guy did some online research and found no known or reported issues. He said that it must be coincidental that the mic stopped working after the ICS update. He cleaned the mic area and the headphone jack, assuming crud may have been disabling the mic. Nothing seemed to fix the problem.
They ordered a replacement under warranty and it arrived the next day. I activated it and proceeded to reload all my apps, again assuming that the mic issue must be coincidental. After many hours tweaking the phone to my needs and setting up all apps I found that the mic did not work.
Thursday I took both to the Verizon store and another rep played with it and could not find the cause. Only options were to upgrade, or try another replacement. I had no reason to replace my previously fully functioning Bolt. They ordered a second refurb that arrived yesterday. Before downloading any apps I was only going to activate it and make sure the mic worked. I never got that far. The second refurb had a malfunctioning screen that was unacceptable to me.
So off to the store I went with three Bolts.
They agreed the 2nd one should never have been sent out with the poor screen.
This time I talked with a female rep. She actually just upgraded from a Thunderbolt and was well versed. We decided to wipe the first refurb back to factory and the mic now was working. I took it home, started downloading my apps and after a few hours and nearly done I found the phone mic to be inoperable again. The speaker mic worked fine.
Assuming an app was disabling my phone mic I wiped it back to factory and reactivated. I checked and the mic is now working again. I assume one of my apps is conflicting with the mic mute. I have been downloading a few apps at a time and the mic is still working. Only about 15% of the previously downloaded apps are now on my Bolt. I just don’t know what app, or when my mic may go mute.
Long, ongoing story, but I thought I would post to see if anyone has any ideas, or similar issues after ICS update. Thanks in advance.

Hey, a big THANKS, for that detailed reply! I guess misery loves company! Yep, that is the problem. The only work around I've found is to use head phones or ear buds. But you can't just plug in buds or phones and expect them to work for phone calls. They have to have a built in mic. Mine is a Dynex Adapter. It has the mic and a button switch for switching to a call if you're listening to music or radio. The adapter is about 5" long and costs about $10 as I recall. At least that makes the phone usable again until a better solution comes along.
Like you, I thought I might have a rogue app and started removing any app with an audio or sound component. So far no luck. Please let me know if you come across a solution and I'll do the same. Thanks again for posting.

I have read elsewhere about a similar issue. In that post it mentioned that once you get the rogue mic mute the only fix is a factory wipe. I have had to wipe phones 5 times since ICS update last Tuesday. I tried uninstalling app by app but never got the mic back without a wipe. I need a phone, more than I need all the apps. I do miss some but am adding them back slowly.
Same here. They are sending me a replacement and we'll see what happens. I'm personally hoping this 2nd one has the same issue and just seeing if I can upgrade mine to another phone. >.>
Being a total dumb ass concerning programming phones, this problem appears to be software rather than hardware related. Could a developer create a small app to simply reset or clear the mic status? I'm probably oversimplifying, but it looks like an HTC or Verizon developer could fix this problem in a matter of minutes. Rendering a fine phone useless after an OS update seems kind of ridiculous, imo. Any suggestions or thoughts?
So far none of the rooted users that didnt take the ota but rather used the flash able haven't reported this issue. It is possible that its a combination of hardware and software where the new software didn't fill the gap for your hardware. It is well known that no two thunderbolts are alike and they all react differently to the software.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Good point Disconnectie. Something, whether hardware or software, rendered my perfectly working Tbolt, basically unusable after the OTA. I wonder now if the Emergency Call function is working? Don't think I'll make an emergency call to test.

Defects

Perhaps I really just do have bad luck but thought I would share my experiences... I got the One through pre order and the device was solid except for a small gap at the bottom that I could live with. However, about 3 weeks in I was using my speakers to listen to some music using google play all access my device was burning hot when I picked it up from my bed (hot enough to a point in which I actually felt the burning sensation in my palm) I immediately ended all processes and did a restary just to be safe, when the device restarted I noticed there was no boot animation sound and soon realized that my speakers were inoperable and wouldnt generate a sound for anything. Then when I got my warranty replacement I noticed that my screen had a warm tint and flickered quite often and after about an hour of using it thw device shut off and wouldnt turn back on no matter what key combination I tried, and the led wouldnt turn on either. I visited a local at&t store that happened to be the store that the regional manager was visiting that day (the only piece of goodluck) where he just took the device (without box or anything at all just the phone) reversed my upgrade and let me pick any device of the same value for free.. (which I couldnt believe because even customer retention said I was out of luck and would have to try again with another refurb, btw I grabbed a gs4 which im ok with for now, might be back to the One once these issues are sorted out) sorry for the rant but this experience with at&t has definitely instilled some faith for me that at&t isnt always useless.
