Root after 2.1 ROM flash? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I just realized that I can't perform root now I have flashed. I tried rooting via fastboot but couldn't push the recovery image. Funny thing is that I already have amon_ra's installed (flashing custom rom) ... can I root or is it too late?

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App

if you have already applied official 2.1 update than Answer is no ..
Can't root, Can't Load Recovery file, Can't install Custom ROM.

hello mate, I flashed a custom rom of 2.1 ... so it's not official 2.1..
If I hold home and power button, I can boot the recovery image... because I flashed it to load a custom rom. Still not possible? I am running chocolate eclair

What is your problem then? I don't really understand what your writing...

I assumed that gaining root access and flashing a custom rom were two different procedures to be done in that order... I didn't use ADB for anything... I just flashed a new rom using the guide.
How do I check then? Is rooting required to flash a custom ROM?
Please excuse my noobidity

the only thing required to flash a custom rom is a custom recovery (amon-ra) in order to flash a custom recovery you need root which is why root is required. hoever if you already have a custom recovery then no, root is not neccesary. just boot into recovery (home + power) and select "flash zip from sdcard" then select the zip containing the rom you want to install. I would reccomend villianrom 10.3 if you want a fast and stable 2.1 rom.
Villianrom 10.3 can be found here:http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=1002
ps: remember to always perform a nandroid backup before flashing custom roms. it is also highly recommended to wipe the data and dalvik-cache before flashing a new rom or restoring a nandroid backup.

Is Clockwork Mod Safe

I've been using AmonRA recovery since I got the Optimus in December and I am comfortable with it. I've tried out Miks port of CM7 and while it's great, i sorely miss the battery performance I was getting on Froyo with Void and running 824mhz stable without any problems. That and bluetooth is sorely missed. I want to give OpenOptimus a shot, but I am extremely weary of trying to install Clockwork Mod again, because the one time I attempted it I ended up bricking my phone. Thankfully, the guy at the Tmo kiosk in the mall just gave me a new one no questions asked. I wouldn't be so hesitant to install CWM on my phone if I could install the img just like I did with AmonRA instead of trusting Rom manager to do it for me.
I don't suggest you to flash recovery via ROM manager. IMHO ClockworkMod is better, has much more options. If you'll flash the 3.1.0.0 version using my flashable zips you won't brick anything. And remember to give openOptimus a shot, you won't regret it

I'm not sure I understand correctly. I thought that clockworkmod was the recovery that is installed by Rom Manager. All of the instructions for installing CWM simply say to install Rom Manager. Ultimately, I do aim to install OpenOptimus but I need to switch from running AmonRA recovery to CWM recovery. And what exactly do you mean by flashable zip? I installed AmonRA using the ADB and an .img file. it there is a thread anywhere here that clearly details the process to install CWM recovery, please point me to it.

Sorry about that. I didn't realize that you could actually flash a recovery from within the recovery. I just switched to CWM and flashed OpenOptimus. Waiting for first boot as I'm typing this.

yes a stated above u can just enter into recovery and flash any recovery u want from the link pointed out above and its safe ,since u already have recovery installed u dont need to flash recovery via rom manager and just remember that any backup taken from any recovery would be restored using the same recovery. To clear all doubts the problem has been solved and installing recovery from rom manger works flawlessly now. Note:Its advisable to use rommanager for ppl not having recovery installed just download the latest rom mager and flash choosig ur phone type.
slightly off topic, but does anyone know where I can get the T-Mobile branded P509 kdz stock firmware just in case I end up needing to roll back to stock? I can't seem to find it anywhere, the_ERROR's thread on howto is closed and the links don't work anymore.

nope its not safe at all using rom manager ~
I flashed CWM and my friend died a few days later.
So no it's not safe.
For me there are no problems with clockworkmod and RomManager. Flashed cwm via RomManager and everything is fine here.

it not about using rom manger for flashing rom ,it just to get the cwm recovery and then going into recovery and using it from there.
Many had problems flashing rom from clockwork so that not advisable but installing cwm is fine 100% sure
M happy with CWM
Don't use tricks like ROM Manager... It's just matter of learning to use a recovery, not that difficult.. just IMHO
You just need to use ROM manager Once to get recovery. After that you can delete the program and enjoy the CWM recovery.
I have been there, I have done it, You do want it
CWM works beautifully without problems..
I use rom manager just to reboot to recovery, as i am too lazy to use the 3 button combo to goto recovery.
Flashed ROMs and zips with CWM. 100 % safe untill now..
The new updared Rom Manager has solved that issue.

How much I've learned in just a month!
I can't believe I had to ask that question. I know now that there are numerous ways to flash recoveries. My personal preference is to do it manually using the adb.

No, it is not 100% fine, in fact it lacks any sanity checks whatsoever.
Just flash CWM through your current recovery and you'll be fine. It's by far the safest method. If you flash through ROM Manager and after reboot you get stuck in fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1015332 ... happened to me, unbricked it with some slight changes to the tutorial. Nothing important.
PS: If you don't use Rom Manager you can always do a $su then #reboot recovery in a terminal (Downloadable from market) to reboot directly to recovery.

[Q] Looking for ROM that's closest to stock Android

Hi, I'm running a stock P500 and I'm a bit disappointed with its performance. I'm looking for a ROM which is feature-complete, i.e. no missing features such as Bluetooth calling, etc. and minimal to no deviation from the stock Android UI. Any suggestions?
use megatron ROM it is the closest in my opinion and has very good performance but i would suggest trying the other ROMs that have gingerbread like miks cm7 they are not missing much and what they are missing you can get back

If you want a nice and long battery life
flash Franco kernel
take note* For 2.2 flash with CFS
Do as what you are told on their page.. I or the dev will not be responsilble.
Ok, so this is all kinda new to me so I wanted to make sure that I have the basics covered:
1. I need to root my phone. I'm running Android 2.2.2 so I guess that means I need to use gingerbreak. It's an .apk file that I need to install on my phone and then I run it to gain root access. Are there any command line actions needed for gingerbreak?
2. After rooting, I need to install a ROM manager such as CWM or AmonRA. If I'm not mistaken, the program itself will install the custom recovery, right? And how do I boot into that recovery mode?
3. After booting into recovery mode, I need to do a nandroid (?) backup of my current ROM, right? And the backup of my stock ROM is restored through the same custom recovery, yes? Would restoring the stock ROM unroot my phone and remove the custom recovery as well?
3. After backing up, I need to flash the custom ROM which should be saved as a .zip file on my SD card. Do I need to worry about the kernel as well?
Sorry if I have a lot of questions.

1. Install it, open it and select "Root"
2. No, the root program won't install the recovery. You need to do that; the easiest way is by Rom Manager (download from market); boot in recovery: turn off the phone and start it by pressing at the same time: home + vol down + power key and release at lg logo to enter custom recovery or just select boot into recovery from ROM Manager
3. Yes, make a backup and to restore it just select "restore" from the same place. No, you will restore the backup you just made so your phone will be exactly the way it was when you created the backup (including apps, settings etc)
4. Yes, you will enter "install zip from sdcard -> choose zip". Don't forget to wipe cache, dalvik cache, data/factory reset and format /system before you flash the rom. Other kernels are not mandatory but highly recommended (the differences are big) - also wipe just cache & dalvik cache before flashing the kernel

The chaces of bricking the phone are very small.
What can happen:
- some people reported that their phone got bricked when they installed the recovery with ROM Manager (this can be easily undone, there is a thread about this). Never happened to me, everything went smooth & fast. There are other ways to install a recovery if you don't want to use ROM Manager, just check the Development section.
- the ROM you choose can be uncompatible with your recovery (all the new roms are compatible with clockworkmod recovery (this is the recovery you will install via ROM Manager); there are some older roms which are compatible only with AmonRA)
- after flashing a custom kernel the phone might not boot (no panic, just flash the rom again or restore backup); check if your ROM is compatible with the kernel you choose
Flashing with recovery is very safe because everything can be easily undone. As long as the phone boots into recovery there is no panic.
But most of the time if your cautious and do everything as told your fine~~
hahaha.. Enjoy..
Rom manager give Cwm.. So no hassle..

Thanks! Is it safe to do all the flashing/work from within ROM Manager? It just seems too easy to be true.
Also, is there a 'compatibility matrix' of some sort for the different ROMS and kernels available? Since I want GB, I'm planning on flashing Mik's CM7 mod. Is Franco's kernel compatible with that?

Thanks. I was able to gain root as well as install CWM. I'm currently backing up my current ROM. Now I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but when I install a custom ROM, wouldn't that overwrite CWM? How do I go back to recovery then, say, to reflash my original ROM?
Flashing a rom through recovery does not overwrite the recovery.
And you can always boot into recovery by pressing and holding home+volume down+power when the phone is off till the recovery menu boots.

For flashing rom : wipe everything, partition SD card only of you want to use a2sd or data2sd (check ciaox's REPO thread for more info about these two) and then choose flash from zip. If you are wiping battery stats then do it when you are fully charged.
For flashing kernel : wipe cache, dalvik cache and battery stats. No need to partition SD card.
EDIT: yes you need to flash zram initialiser. Keep in mind to flash Cfs version for froyo and bfs version for gb roms. Also always reboot between multiple flashes.

Custom Recovery

Hi, I have a Galaxy S2 with stock ROM 4.0.3 and stock Recovery. I wanted to know if there is a way of flashing Custom Rom without rooting the phone or ADB. Would this method work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 I would just proceed till the step "Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear." Would this work? i need custom recovery so i can flash a custom ROM.

No you cant flash a Custom ROM from stock recovery, you need a custom recovery and root access on your phone for flashing custom roms
the method you linked is only for rooting, the recovery appearing is only a temporory one from which you can only install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip.

I didn't test it myself, but I think that it will work.
If the custom ROM is provided as Odin-flashable tar file, you don't need a CWM recovery to flash it. Just put the ROm tar file into PDA section of Odin and flash it to your phone.
Only if the custom ROM is available as CWM-flashable zip file, you need to flash a kernel containing CWM recovery first.
I prefer to flash CF-Root kernel from Chainfire with Odin. It contains CWM Manager app and CWM recovery of cause.
When you are in doubt, stick to the flashing instructions of the ROM developer - usually in the corresponding ROM thread.
P.S.:
As soon as you have CWM recovery, create a nandroid/system backup.
So you will be able to go back to your current system, if something goes wrong with the new ROM.
Good luck !
Oh cool, lemme try it

Instaling Clockwork Recovery after Root?

I've just rooted my phone using this method:

I can't seem to find the obvious way to do this, but, can I simply use stock recovery, to run the CWM.zip in the above method to get to Clockwork Recovery - and then install Cyanogenmod?

In the method I followed, you used stock recovery, to load Clockwork Recovery. I'm simply asking, can I use this method to install custom rom?

You boot into stock recovery. You then select a file called CWM.zip and this temporarily loads Clockwork. On a reboot, you'd still have stock recovery.
Yes you can flash custom ROM using that temp cwm, I do it all the time

1) place your ROM zip to SD card root, again flash CWM zip from stock recovery,
and install zip from SDcard,
2) or you flash CF-root CWM version from CWM after flashing CWM zip, to get pemenent CWM
3) flash CF-root TAR file from ODIN to get CWM, no matter you already rooted
Excellent. Thanks guys.

A question related to CWM recovery.

Dear people, I have a question in regards to obtaining CWM recovery after using the root method located here, specifically method one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
I used the stock recovery to flash "Root_SuperSU.0.95-Busybox.1.20.2-S2-signed.zip" and everything seems to be working well. However, I want to flash a custom ROM like MIUI rom and I believe that I need CWM recovery. I tried flashing the recovery via the app "ROM manager". It says it downloaded successfully but I can't seem to boot into it so I uninstalled the app. Now I am turning to you guys for help.
So, to get permanent CWM recovery, must I really flash a kernel with CWM built in?
Thank you for reading, and I do hope you guys could assist me in this matter.
So you've successful attained root access. You cannot replace the stock recovery permanently without flashing a kernel with CWM.
However, you can temporarily replace it by flashing this file through the stock recovery :
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-4.0.1.5-galaxys2.zip
When you've temporarily replace the recovery make sure you've downloaded the rom you want I believe to the external memory (I actually put it on both Internal and External) and flash it through CWM.

Thank you for your reply.
So from your post, I have learnt that I could flash a ROM with just the temporary recovery. However, I have a few side questions.
Is wiping data and the cache partition safe with the temporary version?
Suppose something goes wrong during the flashing procedure, and I can't boot into the phone. How do I restore the phone back to its original state? I know of the Nandroid backup function, but does it create a file to the external SD or what? Am I supposed to keep the stock recovery or will the ROM replace it with CWM?
Yes, you need kernel with built-in CWM to have it permanent, but for flashing custom ROM you can do it via temporary too. It have same functionality. I recommend using latest 6.x version from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223
Wiping is safe if you have 4.0.3 ROM or 4.0.4 with custom kernel with MMC_CAP_ERASE command disabled.
Hi, I have yet another question, this time regarding Cyanogenmod. I would like to flash Cyanogen through the CWM provided here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223
And I was just wondering. Do I need any custom kernels for Cyanogen? Since I rooted with the method I mentioned in my original post, I would be using the stock kernel.
Oh, and another one. Suppose I could flash with the stock kernel, what should I choose under CWM before flashing? "Wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition" and also "format /cache" under mounts and storage?
CM will overwrite all it has own kernel

You might also want to go into advanced and wipe dalvik a few times too.
