restoring settings after a flash - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi!
i have had my hd2 for about 8 days now and have already tried out a few roms - 2.13.531.1, energy cookie 23569 june 26 and lastly cleanex dse v12. now my problem is that this is my first (really) smartphone and i upto last month i didnt even know xda existed, let alone what a flash junkie is.
over the weeks i have trolled the forums and have learned a lot about rom and radio flashing. i departed from the stock rom because i found it generally very cluttered. now i am experimenting with the various roms out here.
my problem is that after every flash, i am staring at a blank phone and i have to go around doing all the settings all over again. now i read up stuff on UC (because it was in the energy rom) but i simply cant figure out how to backup ALL my customization and data and then restore it back. im talking about:
1)contacts/messages/calendar entries etc.
2)reg edits
3)cht
4)cabs
5)other things i cant recall
i made a bunch of exports from the energy rom when i decided to test the cleanex rom. i guess i can use pimbackup. i can import cht settings. this cleanex rom has UC built in but i have little idea how to use it (something to do with SdConfig.txt?). and i am infinitely frustrated when a rom flash takes 10 mins but getting the phone back up takes a couple of hours. and at the end of it, i almost always forget something.
long story short:
1)im looking for fellow junkies to help me do a complete backup and restore (data, settings, et al). a sort of an algorithm/guide/checklist that covers all bases would really help rid the cloud around my head. some help with automation would also help.
2)is it really advisable to switch between various rom kitchens. because each one of them has different ways of restoring your backed up settings. i am not really going to flash every second day. i just want to find a good rom and stick with it (and possibly use its updates)
many many thanks! in the meanwhile ill try to get UC working for me...
edit:
btw i have a tmous hd2 with 2.08.hspl, cleanex dse v12 and 2.12.50.02_2 radio

Very interesting question....

If you use a progam e.g SPB Backup,Sprite to do a full back up of your device prior to flashing or hard reset, you can do a full restore, so your device will return exactly to how it was prior to flashing etc, even ringtones that was set, text messages, wall papers, emails everything! mine is scheduled to back up every few days, i use spb and it works flawlessly everytime!
Cheers

In most of the Energy roms in the Tools section there is a settings Export, that puts most of that stuff in the XDA_UC folder for you ....
The UC that is in the Energy ROMs is a customized version, not sure what hoops you have to jump through to get the exports to work in regular UC ...
Otherwise as said SPB Backup is your best bet, works great in "Rom Upgrade" mode ...

You should look into sashimi. I spend 10 minutes (most of it just waiting) from I decide to reflash my phone until it's done installing all my apps, settings etc. There are just a couple of small things I need to do manually...

I would actually second that, I just recently RE-discovered Sashimi , does everything UC does , but the one thing it does that makes me happy is it can move the shortcuts into folders for you .....
(sashimi and XDA seem to have had some type of "parting of the ways", so you may have to look for it elsewhere)

I use Energy ROM and XDA_UC with tht settings exporter does export most things. However, in your case where you wish to import every reg setting you will be better off some dedicated backup program. SPB backup is good. Have used it previously and it worked good. However, with XDA_UC, settings exporter and PIM backup I hardly need it.

Upgrading Woes

So I have installed the new ROM every time dcd has shared it, let's face it, he and many others do a phenomenal job of helping us make the most of our PPC.
My problem is that I am tired of losing my settings, emails, texts, and installed applications. I sync my PPC to keep my contacts, calendar, and tasks so that is not an issue, but everything else is.
Does anyone know of a software solution or any other may inwhich I can switch to the newest ROM and still maintain everything else as is or even create some sort of backup that would reinstall everything that I have the way it was right before I upgraded?

Sprite Backup or PIM backup.....plus there are others...these are the most common.....Sprite is superiror for custom settings....
The sprite backup image bricked me, not sure why.
So I will be re-installing everything again this time...
full backup programs often cause problems when updating rom. You should try something like uc or sashimi to backup settings. I prefer sashimi, but may prefer uc. In any case, you can use cregeditor to find your settings by changing the settings, backing up registry, and then change settings back to what you want. Next compare new registry to saved registry.
I use PIM backup, you can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
I also use this AutoInstall program that helps me install all the cabs and stuff i want with a single click.
Find it here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20753&highlight=autoinstall
I prefer this method instead of making OEM's.

The best way to do this is to learn a bit about User Customizations (aka UC, read about it here). I have all of my cabs on my SD card and those files that I copy over, so when you finish running DCD rom it looks for a file called sdconfig.txt that descibes what you want to happen to further customize your phone. You can also have xml to change all of the registry keys to change your today screen, assign your buttons and most anything else you can do manually.
After running the RUU and then activesync, it takes me about five minutes to get my phone EXACTLY how it was. If I spent more time customizing XML and so forth, I would have no time getting all the settings and preferences exactly how I like it. This is the solution that works so much better than Sprite or SPB backups when upgrading ROMs. It is much easier than it sounds.

This happened because drivers and other dependent files changed from ROM to ROM when DCD upgraded various things. This is why this is a bad solution.
P.S. Bricks are paperweights that go back in for a replacement. You just caused enough problems to necessitate a hard reset.
What I find annoying is every time i upgrade to a new ROM i have to make new bluetooth partnerships and setup my wifi access points again.

This is the price we pay for having shiny new things. If newer ROMs don't offer you any noticeable upgrades, you should stay where you were. Some people are still at 2.3.x and happy.

ATT Fuze standard vs cooked

I have been contemplating flashing my fuze with one of the cooked roms but I wanted to know based on whats out there. What are the advantages to flashing into a cooked rom vs staying with the ATT rom? I also read that there is a way during the initial setup if you stay with the ATT rom that you can get rid of the bloatware. By doing this does it make it comparable to a flashed rom? Would the stock rom minus the bloatware be more stable than a cooked rom? Thanks for the help im new to this so I want to make sure I make the right choice.
If you press the reset button when the phone first boots up (installing applications/shortcuts) then it will be without all the AT&T stuff. I did that at first and the phone just sweet, i never really played with the AT&T ROM but the ones at the store were slow.
The ROMs from Da_G are AT&T without AT&T and some other improvements taking from other phones. You can try others but that's all dependent on what you want. Some ROMs come with tons of applications that people want and some come with none. Those choices are up to you which you choose. Look at the screenshots to see.
You should read around the forums and take a look at the stickies that are in this forum, but I can highlight a few of the improvements that you're going to see:
- Major increase in speed and snappiness
- More space for your programs
- Usually offers more options than the stock ROM
- Better battery life
- Better signal
Those are just a few, but I recommend flashing a cooked ROM to anyone I know that has a fairly good understanding of phones, winmo, etc. You should definitely do it as soon as possible.
dont do it....its addictive....
I swear flashing is worse than crack. I flash almost once a week and when I am not flashing I am customizing.....
and then when im not customizing I am flashing....lol
it never ends.
it not my fault, NATF keeps coming out with awesome roms

well techincally, that has nothing to do with the rom, it has to do with the radio
For all you guys that say "Flashing is addictive...ki flash once or twice a week, etc"
How do guy guys manage loosing all ur contacts, text messages and anything else you have on the phone, since u lose all that when u flash ur phone cuz of the hard reset.
I know there are programs like PIMBackup and sprite, but which ones do u guys use on a regular basis, with all this flashing..?!

I usually use PIM Backup. I try to stay with User Customizable (UC) ROMs to avoid installing a million cabs after I flash.

haha so true so true. flashing and customizing is a never ending cycle. once u flash, you need go back to the original stock roms nor feel like keeping your ppc simple. always trying to find new things to tweak it up and make it your own and not "AT&T's"

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For most part I use a combination of PIMBackup, Sprite, and WMDC with Outlook. I use other stuff (applications and configuration setup) to help with other tasks as well but I will only talk about the above.
PIMBackup to backup call logs, SMS, Contacts, and application configuration folders.
Sprite for a complete system back just in case I want to back to previous ROM, that way I don't have to reinstall, configure, and tweak again.
WMDC with Outlook for Calendar, Notes, Tasks, Contacts, and Applications to reinstall.
My 2 Cents
Flashing
as was said above gets you the best of everything (you can choose what works for you, you can even make feature requests and the cooks will usually include the good ones) you can go for a fully loaded rom with all the bells or a light rom to add only what you need.
Loosing contact data
I think most of us use the awesome PIM Backup to deal with this because it is rom independant and can be customized to backup stuff like call logs, txt messages and other things.
Cheers

I use UC to reinstall my apps and load my email configuration at first boot, and since I sync against an Exchange server using ActiveSync over 3G all I really have to do to get everything back the way it was is to enter my passwords.
I am typically back up and running in less than 5 mins after a flash.
stock vs flash
So for those of you that are experienced with custom roms, when you made the switch from the stock to the custom was there any type of uncertainty as far as stability was concerned? Also when you talk about the speed of the cooked rom is the loaded company rom that slow compared to the custom?
yes it is that different you'll notice mostly when you open and close the keyboard and it automatically goes into landscape. On the stock it's a grueling process going from landscape to portrait, most cooked roms do this quite efficiently.
Also for contacts backup i save all mine as PPCBckpContacts V1.3.0.0
It is an exe on your storage card and saves all your contacts on your storage card just run it once after every flash (and before each reset if you added #s) and you are ready. I've got all my cabs stored nicely on my SD card and UC ready if the rom supports it. If you are windering what UC is it's User Costumizable. you write one config file (simple just search for it) and put all the cabs in the correct area, after the flash insert SD card before setup and your phone installs and resets all your cabs for you.

any software to back up program files?

Roms are updated almost on daily basis here. Any software can back up program files so I don't need to reinstall all the programs every time after I flash a new rom?
You can try Sprite. It has a few options for backing-up and restoring across diferent ROMS. If you are on ATT, it came with your phone so you can find and install ca CAB. It may even be standard on the Touch Pro; I am not sure.
This works well if you are simply playing with different ROMS to see what they do. The best practice for a production phone is to reload your apps from scratch after you settle on a ROM you want to use for a while.

What setting should I pick using sprite so all the programs will be backup?
The defaults will work fine. When you restore, Choose Merge Level 1.
Note that tis will backup everything including your PIM.
Good Luck

backup data & new ROMs

OK, I looked around for awhile, and I couldn't find an answer. If I wanted to experiment with different ROMs, let's say each week, but I really didn't want to have to "re-do" my setup, is there a way to save your personalized data and back it up to a new, freshly installed ROM?
For example, after rooting, I first had Ivan's ROM installed. Great ROM, but I wanted A2SD, so I had to partition my SD card and install a ROM that supported A2SD, which was PlainJaneT2. Also a great ROM.
But, I had to sync my phone for all my contacts & calendar events. Re-load my wall paper and lockscreen wall paper. Re-set my ringtone. Download ALL my apps and reinstall them, then configure them (like ChompSMS, etc). What a pain! It's funny that flashing a new ROM only takes about 5 minutes, but re-doing your setup takes at least 4 times longer.
Anyway, is there a way (or an app) to backup only your config data and plop it onto a newly installed ROM?
Thanks!
Search. I guarantee you'll find an answer.
Just read the last sentence, titanium backup.
Yep, I found Titanium yesterday! Thanks. Sometimes I get impatient if I don't find an answer right away.
Now I'm trying to figure out a way to prevent the OTA update from installing on my phone. Seems Verizon really wants me to have it...I get a pop up reminder about every 30 minutes. Grrr.
Just install it and reroot? If you've got titanium backup I see no reason not to.

I'm starting to hate my HD2 because of windows mobile

I have the Elegancia GTX finale ROM on my phone
1. All emails that are set up are delated within a couple of days, annoying to have to set up everything again.
2. Issues with apps that keep giving errors and login info delated (same as issue #1)
3. Cant reply to email , gives error such as not authorized or not on list
4. This phone seems so slow at times, have SK Tools to clean up stuff but this phone feels slow...3 APPS on device memory only...media saved to sd card
5. App market is a joke
Well $ucks to be you. I have none of those issues, though I have Energy ROM.
Ditto, Cleanex Core here...
That rom sounds useless! Using Dutty CDLC9 & Shubcraft 1.5 Android. The Dutty rom has been running flawless from the start & Android is missing auto backlight after a day or 2 of tweaking.

1) no clue what the problem is
2) post the errors you recieve
3) check if proxy is enabled in dataconnection if so disable it
4) no idea
- its usefull to post ROM date and Radio version.
- its usefull to give more inforamtion regarding errors and handelings you did before
As far i can see it's a ROM based problem. It's not caused by the HTC HD2 phone. I use Radio 2.12.5.2_2 with Miri and Dinik ROM and it works flawless, also ROMS from Artemis/ Energy and [email protected] always works flawless and fast.
Maybe its a good idea to try the Miri and Dinik ROM, its fast, stable and energy consumption is 0.3% per hour instead of 0.7% what most ROMS uses.
You can also try CleanRam to see if it speeds up your phone. Trying to empty your temp internet files, temp emails and other temp files might help too.
or the OP could sell the hd2 and get something less complicated.
You can set up xml's to restore emails after flash.
You can use xda_uc or sashimi to restore all programs and settings.
Myphone takes care of contacts and messages.
Flashing shouldn't take more than 30-60min tops to be back where you were.
Yeah man, If you can't figure out how to use your HD2 I'll take it off your hands.
Those of us who really enjoy using our HD2s spend a lot of time reading on these forums. That is what I suggest you do.
well it is windows, and for some reason it always feels like it bogs down over time. Mind you, microsoft didnt seem to really get to grips with memory management until windows 7.
simple solution.
task29
android compatible Radio (2.10.50.02_2 seems a common one)
Android compatible (there are many, but i really like VBN's ROMS)
Download an android rom - now this is where you should probably try a couple. and read tons, then read some more.
Android works pretty well if you set it up right
problem solved, you love your HD2 again
