OK, I looked around for awhile, and I couldn't find an answer. If I wanted to experiment with different ROMs, let's say each week, but I really didn't want to have to "re-do" my setup, is there a way to save your personalized data and back it up to a new, freshly installed ROM?
For example, after rooting, I first had Ivan's ROM installed. Great ROM, but I wanted A2SD, so I had to partition my SD card and install a ROM that supported A2SD, which was PlainJaneT2. Also a great ROM.
But, I had to sync my phone for all my contacts & calendar events. Re-load my wall paper and lockscreen wall paper. Re-set my ringtone. Download ALL my apps and reinstall them, then configure them (like ChompSMS, etc). What a pain! It's funny that flashing a new ROM only takes about 5 minutes, but re-doing your setup takes at least 4 times longer.
Anyway, is there a way (or an app) to backup only your config data and plop it onto a newly installed ROM?
Thanks!
Search. I guarantee you'll find an answer.
Just read the last sentence, titanium backup.
Yep, I found Titanium yesterday! Thanks. Sometimes I get impatient if I don't find an answer right away.
Now I'm trying to figure out a way to prevent the OTA update from installing on my phone. Seems Verizon really wants me to have it...I get a pop up reminder about every 30 minutes. Grrr.
Just install it and reroot? If you've got titanium backup I see no reason not to.

First, I have an Incredible and have done all the goodies to it, but my wife has an Eris and Im gonna need some help getting it right.
I month or so ago I rooted my wife's Eris and installed xtrSense on it because it looked closest to stock (with Sense). A couple weeks later htc mail kept force closing, over and over. Then some days it would go an entire day and not have service, while mine would when they are sitting next to each other. (by no service I mean the phone part of the smartphone did not function).
The biggest problem I am going to have in finding a ROM for this thing is she LOVES the HTC calendar widget and the HTC mail widgets. She has 2 work emails and a personal email, all of which have their own HTC mail widget.
Is there a vanilla ROM that has a widget that is similar to the HTC Mail widget?
I have been leaning towards KaosFroyo but the problem being the mail widget. I LOVE that Gingerbread theme by SicNside though!
Sorry for the long winded post!
Honestly, Ryan - instead of switching it up on her, re-download xtrSENSE, wipe, and flash it. This time, flash it TWICE just to make sure. Reboot, let it go, and then set it up with all her ****.
Once that's done, go to this thread and download the newest ERIS radio available:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650121
Download it to the phone, rename it to "update.zip" and put it in the root, reboot to recovery, flash it, reboot, let it install, reboot, and wait for your phone to start up.
Give it a little bit - and you should be good to go.
Long answer short: no (not that I've seen), the HTC widgets are pretty darn exclusive.

Thanks very much for the reply. One question though, why install it twice?
Flash it twice just to be sure. It gets rid of any stray files from the old stuff

Only needed if the phone suffers from OCD: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
Complete and utter BS voodo - computers are deterministic. Sort of like saying you will do a better job at work today if you drive there three or four times "just to make sure".
The suggestion the first responder provided is no different than if you simply performed a "wipe data/factory reset" in Amon_RA.
What you really ought to try is clearing the data store for a few selected apps (Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications), rather than nuking all the user data and settings and starting all over. You might even consider making a backup so you can make several attempts at it if something doesn't work out as you expect.
Thanks for the replies.
I always nandroid before doing a ROM, especially on her phone. I just dont get why all of a sudden she had an "x" over the signal bars on her phone for an entire day, then all of a sudden it started working again. Also the htc mail force closing literally every 10 seconds.
Is there a way to backup all of her home screens, then wipe, then install xtrSense again? It takes forever to re-set up all of her screens since they are all full.

I'll admit that the signal issue is a little strange (but you didn't mention whether it comes right back after rebooting, or whether you checked to see if airplane mode had been toggled on accidentally).
Have you tried clearing the application data and cache for the HTC Mail App to see if that changes anything?
The HTC version of Sense had a thing called "Themes" that you could create - but it didn't save them to the SD card, so if you did a factory reset (or a wipe), you would lose all your themes. Kind of stupid, really; but then again, making those settings survive a ROM replacement (or factory reset) wasn't part of HTC's requirements.
I think you are kind of stuck, unless xtrSense uses a 3rd-party launcher. (For instance, ADW and Launcher Pro have means to backup your home screens) Apps, emails, contacts, bookmarks, and SMS/MMS messages can all be backed up using 3rd-Party (market) apps for those purposes, but I will agree with you - restoring a Sense ROM takes some time.

This should really be a reply to RyanTX, but I was lazy.
My Backup Root (free on the market - make sure and look for ROOT version, not My Backup Pro which costs $) will backup your home screens.
The only problem with any program that backs up your home screens, including Launcher Pro or ADW (at least it used to be - let me know if anything's changed) is that due to restrictions made by Google, they will NOT restore widgets, only everything else, which pretty much defeats the usefullness of the ability IMHO.

Even the "built in" ADW backup/restore method won't handle widgets, so maybe it is an Google API thing, I don't know. OTOH, I have 7 home pages with only 4 widgets in use, so I find that backup/restore darned handy - even if I have to fix up a few widgets manually, it still saves me plenty of time. You're right, it would be great if it worked perfectly - but a little bit (or a lot in my case) is better than nothing at all.

True. I guess as long as someone isn't like I used to be; I used to have 20+ widgets over several home screens. Now I like to keep things simple, I only have six things, and only on one screen, although five of the six are widgets.
I recently upgraded to GSB v2.1 from my previously non-rooted bog standard Eris and am amazed by what I had been missing out for. I'm still pretty much a complete newbie to the whole custom ROM thing though, and have a few questions that may be quite stupid.
1) I'm getting force close crashes w/ the Facebook app. It'll load for a second and I'll see my news page, then force close comes up. Do I just need to reinstall or ... ? Edit: Facebook seems to be loading now, without force close issues. The problem was very repeatable (every time I tried to open the app!) last night, but seems gone today. Ah well, good riddance!
2) While trying to play a vid from Youtube, the sound is working flawlessly but the video doesn't seem to be advancing. I can move forward manually but all I get are still pictures from the video. This is using the browser that came with GSB; I haven't yet tried to get any other apps.
3) My wife's phone seriously needs this too, but she's leery of wiping her phone of apps. What's the best way to backup apps from a non-rooted Eris?
Thanks in advance for any answers you guys can provide!
Download titanium backup for the apps I'm new at this too I'm unsure about your problems with Facebook and YouTube did you wipe the dalvik cache?
Sent from my Ginger Tazz using Tapatalk
I did wipe the cache, although like I said, I haven't put any apps on here yet, so no harm in just wiping it all again and reflashing the rom to make sure it works. Thanks for the titanium backup tip!
No problem gsb is a great rom these Eris devs do awesome work I use gsb 2.0 no problems I'm trying Ginger tazz now I think battery life may be a little better but both are excellent. You should totally hook your wife's phone up too

I think the Youtube thing is a known issue, and I'm guessing that it's just because Cyanogen Mod 7 isn't completely done yet, so maybe it'll be worked out over time.

Just to let you know, you can wipe the Dalvik cache any time you want to, even after loading apps. It'll just longer to rebuild it when you reboot, but it can help solve issues sometimes.
Welcome to rooting!
That's great to hear! Well, it's not great that youtube doesn't work 100%, but at least it's not some weird problem particular to me. Lol.
I have to say, I really really have grown to like this ROM very fast. My wife is clamoring for it even knowing she's gonna lose all her apps. Any tips on how I set my contacts to import Facebook profile pics now? I did it before, but have no clue where that was or where it may have moved to now.

best option i found for backing up my wife's apps before flashing from stock was to use "universal androot" to root (it is a software root so there is no rebooting or flashing or really any risk of loosing aps). then you can install titanium backup. it will even backup protected files since you have root. when titanium backup loads, hit menu->batch and pick the backup all new apps and newer versions. after flashing, load titanium backup, menu-> batch and pick restore all missing apps (i restored them with data, but many people have had to install the app only and then put back in the other info). FYI i rooted several (5) phones this way. if you install rom manager from the market and install a recovery (clockwork or amon's) from the rom manager, you can turn phone off, then hold vol down and power on to boot to recovery. from there you can wipe and flash. it is the easiest way to root and flash a new rom imho.
sorry figured i should answer your post i quoted. lol. if under menu-> accounts and sync->add account->facebook. input your info and select sync all or sync current contacts. it should pull in the information. if you have different names for people in your contacts and your facebook (ex "wife" in your contacts and "jane" on facebook) you can "sync all contacts" and manually link them. contacts->long press on contact->edit contact->menu->join. this should link you contacts with their facebook info. the facebook pics will sync it just takes a good bit of time sometimes.
So, I have no idea what has happened here, but I seem to have lost my calendar application. Is there any way, other than re-installing the ROM to get that back?
Ok, so, the plot thickens. I went ahead and just reflashed the rom through ClockWork Manager, got everything to boot up just fine, and using Titanium Backup was able to reinstall all my programs/settings. Now a really interesting thing has happened, the phone won't recognize my sim card! When I go into wireless networks and settings, and then into mobile network providers, it prompts me to put a sim card into the phone (of course, there's already one in there).
Any suggestions on this?
My plan for now is to go home, back everything up to my computer, wipe everything through my CWM recovery, and then try to re-flash again.
Also, the keyboard that I use (SlideIt) is having problems force closing every few seconds, which is becoming REALLY annoying.
I would love your input.
ok, so, after a full wipe of the phone, and THEN re-installing Axura 2.3.1.3, I think I'm back to where I want to be. Phone is recognizing my SIM again and I'm in the middle of doing my restoration with TiBU. I'm gonna go through apps first and THEN system information to see if that's what caused my problems before. Might have a corrupted TiBU file somewhere, or a rogue one that's causing these problems for me.
if calander was the only problem in the first place you could have just downloaded 1 from market ??
yeah, I could have, but I really just wanted the stock Google calendar. I'm weird like that

Hi all
Sorry if this has been posted before or if I'm in the wrong section. I've tried to learn as much as possible, but as a complete noob to Android, I'm finding it a tad unmanageable.
What happened:
So first I rooted my device with Odin and CWM6.4. I used CWM to make a backup of my device on the internal SD, as I have no external. I then installed Mobile Odin Pro and flashed first CM9, then the LFB modem, then CM10 and then GAPPS. I then reset my device, or whatever the option was called to delete everything, which the guide said was required.
I'm now running the CM10 released yesterday (06082012) and everything seems to be running well. However here are some questions, that I hope you can help me with:
1) I liked the touchwiz widget for the weather and clock. Can I get this back somehow?
2) I liked the swype keyboard and tried installing swiftkey3, but this does not have swype apparently. Can I somehow get swype again?
3) When I installed CM10, I had to delete everything, which meant I lost all my apps and their files. Is this standard when flashing? I would like to fiddle around and try some different roms/kernels, but it would get tiresome if I had to reinstall everything from scratch every time.
4) Since I got CM10 instead of stock, the screen seem to be generally much brighter and drains a lot more power from the battery. I've tried setting it on automatic, but it doesn't seem to adjust the screen brightness even if I try covering up the sensor with my finger. Does anyone know why? Is it because I'm using software which is under development or is there an easy fix?
5) I've tried getting it to transfer my contacts from facebook to my contacts on the phone, but it just doesn't seem to happen since CM10. Is there something I can try to get it working? Also before I had the option in the facebook app under app settings and could check a box here to make it sync. Now the sync option seems to be under Android homescreen --> Settings --> Accounts --> Facebook --> check to synchronize. It says it synched like 30 minutes ago, but I can't see the contacts.
Thanks a lot for any help you can provide!
Regards Casper

Lets answer your questions one by one..
1. You cannot get tw Widgets on cm10..as it uses the framework which is different from CM10..try other widgets from the market..
2.you can download swipe by going to beta.swype.com and downloading it manually..or else install slideit pro..its also provides the same functionalitty..
3. You don't need to install everything when you reflash..use titanium backup root from play store to backup Apps+data ..and restore the apparel when you flash again..
4.might be a rom issue..remember it is still in development..
5.the settings I jb are in that way..try going to Facebook app..open the contact list..scroll up and down till al the contact pictures load..check you phone contacts again..hope it work..used to work earlier in gingerbread..
Don't mind the spelling mistakes..I am typing on a phone in a moving bus
Cheers.

I rooted my Note 2 about a year ago, but had left it stock until yesterday. I had wanted to be able to adjust my APN settings and that seemed like as good as time as any to try a rom. I had TB backups that I have been running since I rooted my phone, and made a Nandroid backup in TWRP and then flashed CM11. Had a few hiccups along the way, but eventually got it working. I read the warning about not using TB to restore all system data, but people seemed to ahve success using it in a more limited way to restore just select data, so I tried using it just for contacts...but that didn't restore my contacts and caused other immediate issues. Did some more reading and saw that TB is apparently not good at backing up contacts, just everything else. Standard reply was to use Google to sync contacts, but I don't do that anymore after having problems with it years ago when I first tried an Android phone.
So the other solution I came across for people who hadn't ever synced with Google was to use the Nandroid backup you made before flashing to go back to stock. Get your contacts there and then sync them with Google, export them, or use another app to back them up, and then flash back. So I tried this, but when I restored my Nandroid backup in recovery it restored a factory reset device. I was able to download TB and use it to restore most of my data, so I'm now about 80% of where I was before I flashed...but still no contacts (well actually it restored 1 of my contacts, plus the VZ default contacts). So am I screwed, or is there any other thing to try to get my contacts back?
Screwed.
Use Google, dude. Google has made major leaps in the past few years.
I flash a lot and use tibu a lot. Never ever been able to successfully restore contacts unless from an exported file or from a tibu restore.
You could use that file you exported and import it to Google, maybe?
Thanks. Figured that was the case. Google screwed up my contacts in the same way a couple of years apart the first two times I tried an Android phone. I got a ton of duplicated contacts, a bunch of unrelated contacts were merged, and phone numbers were forgotten. The only way I got everything resorted was by taking my old dumb phone into a Verizon store and after about an hour of playing around they were able to figure out how to get the contacts onto my smart phone. Which is what I guess I will end up doing again. I'll lose the last couple of years worth of new contacts and contact changes, but at least I won't be starting from scratch. Once I do that it looks like I need to make sure to export the contacts and save them as a vcf somewhere off my phone. Maybe even print them out. Oh well, valuable lesson and all that.
