Before I flash my phone for the very first time, I need to know some things.
I know there are threads who give info, but they aren't always up-to-date or handeling about my phone.
So I want to know, I heard about a third version of HSPL.
What are the things that I need to do?
If I want to install a new rom, I first install HSPL, then the rom, but do I have to install something like a radio too? or something else?
Will a custom rom always work in my language (BE/DUTCH),
and which rom is good for texting (no lag etc).
I want a clean and smooth rom, with not much BS. Any advice?
I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm stuck with them for a long long time and I want to be well prepared.
Version of OS: 5.2.21869
Manila: 2.5.19211619.0
ROM: 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD
RADIO: 2.06.51.07
Follow this thread step by step and you cant go wrong.
Its link you to HSPL3 and anything else you might need.
It tells you how to flash a radio (if you need to).....
It will tell you which radio you need in the thread for the rom your going to use....
You just have to read through all the rom threads to find out which one is going to be best for you...... I'd reccomend energy roms... I think they might only be available in english though. Different languages available will be listed in the rom thread...
The flash only takes 10 minutes...its the reading up first thats the time consuming part....
Hope it all goes well for you
thanks for the advice, I will follow it and read everything 10 times before flashing anything

Yea. Read it very very very carefully. Once you grasp the process, it's so easy and intuitive.

blimey, you can come again! hehe
So here are the steps that I'm about to take: (first off I saved all my data, sms, etc elsewhere).
1) flash HSPL 3

My ROM is 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD, so it seems that this is okay to do. I think I have the 'usualleo', can I check this somewhere?
When I look into RAM SIZE, it says 512 MB, and I don't know what telstra is, but I definitly won't need the last one (1024). I also think in HSPL itself, I need to choose 2.08.HSPL.
Next, I'm about to flash my first custom rom, and will follow the steps given here:
Flashing Via ActiveSync
1. Download your prefered Rom from the LEO Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
2. REMOVE SIM and microSD CARDS!! (this is a precautionary measure and is not compulsory)
3. Turn phone back on and wait until it syncs with your PC
4a. If your Rom is a .exe (customRUU.exe is already included in the Rom file) then run the file
4b. If your Rom is a .nbh file then run the CustomRUU.exe from the Roms Folder (if one isnt included then download it *HERE*)
5. Follow onscreen instructions to set up your New Rom
6. Once phone has gone through the customisation procedure then replace Sim and microSD Cards
7. Perform a Hard Reset to clear any leftover data from your previous Rom (see intructions at bottom).
8. Set up phone as required and job done.

I really can't find what ROM I should use..
I want a rom with landscape built in and the sms client 2016.
Are there much roms which include this?
yea thats all OK, except you dont really need to remove sim and sd. Only if you're stroubleshooting.
Plus, most cooked roms support 'autoinstall', , , create a folder on your sd card called autoinstall, put in there any cabs that are essentials, and the rom will install them as part of the post flash setup process.
as to which rom for what, thats gotta be down to you. Theyre all good, theres no such thing as a best rom, and what works brilliantly for one person makes the next person weep with frustration.
Flashing only takes 5/10 mins, you can try out a dozen roms in an evening.
Dont forget you only need apply hspl once. It will stay there till you either flash a stock from sd card (dont do this, theres no need nowadays) or you can run hspl2 (yes, hspl2) and choose your stock spl (1.42.0000 or 1.66.0000 or whatever)
can I run HSPL 2 after I firstly installed HSPL 3 for the custom rom I'm about to choose? And I'm guessing roms come packed (7z/zip/rar), need to unpack those files I guess? How do you actually start cooking a rom?
edit: I also gonna remove everything (hard reset) before I start flashing anything, so I start clean
Okay this is coming really close now:

Download Artemis 23.0 level A NLD (this I'm about to use)
I'm gonna go with artemis, but I also want a higher radio version. should I update my radio or my rom first? And how do I know which radio is compactible with that rom? the ones adviced in the rom? http://www.pilotlogic.com/artemis/htc_hd2_radio/ these?
I'm a bit confused what steps to take, in which order.
I know I have to HSPL first, (gonna use HSPL 3)
but then I doubt which to do first, rom or radio. And is it easy to install? Can I make any mistakes on this? what are the things that need special attention? thanks in advance guys, for all the help!
doesn't matter which order, except if you do rom first your phone will hang till you enter bootloader and flash a matching radio so most people say radio first.
heres how i'd do it
1 hspl3 (only needs doing once, not every time you flash)
2 enter bootloader manually
3 flash the radio
4 when it gets to 100% and is about to reboot, hold down voldown to go back into bootloader
5 flash the rom
6 allow phone to boot properly

I used the video guides the first time..........
Id have freaked out about the radio hanging at 96% if I hadnt already seen that on the video.
Watch each step before you do it, that way you know what to expect.....
Happy flashing.........

Maybe anyone knows? if not I might ask it in the Artemis thread
think I'm good to go then, well prepared, thanks to you guys
update, just installed HSPL going slowly to the next step
damn guys? I'm really DOUBTING, should I flash a rom or a radio first?
I'm scared if I flash my rom first my cell won't startup because of incompactibility with my phone's rom? Or reversed ways. Can anyone advise me before I start?
Edit: took a leap of faith and trusted on the posts above, and I'm now running a new radio now only my rom and I'm done. Gonna see the video's and tuts first. I'll keep you updated. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW this radio is GREAT! my sound quality has improved like A LOT! very strange, with my original rom, I always heard noises, now it's way clearer when I call

(just the order, mem card formatted to fat32)
1.hspl
2.task29
3.rom
4.radio
5.hard reset
is this the right order?
just want to ask in what order i should i do about custom splash screen? ty for those who will help me..
Sounds good, but I would do:
1.hspl v3
2.task29 (I remember seeing a tool which flashes the ROM and does Task29 automaticly, somewhere here on the board)
3.ROM
4.hard reset!! better 2x
5.radio
Good luck

Oh crap! I have flashed like 5 ROMs and never ever dona a hard-reset after flashing. But they worked, so...
Oh and you put the radio No5, while actually you should have the proper radio for the ROM before you flash the ROM. So it's more like:
1. HSPL v3 (2.08)
2. Radio
3. Task 29
4. ROM
5. Hard reset
Right?

In the past I also flashed ROMs without a hard reset but after some flashes I noticed some bugs which were not existing anymore after performing a Task29. Its also recommended by nearly every chef here on the board.
Some custom ROMS (very rare) include a RADIO which is sometimes not THAT RADIO what you want. So I prefer flashing it afterwards.
I think you can start flashing now Good luck and remember use the search button
Hello, im new to androids and rooting, and i own a galaxy s2 which i have just rooted with Chainfires CF-root which also installed Clockwork mod recovery. I have a couple of questions on how to install custom roms, for example if i would like to flash villainrom, what are the exact steps i need to take? I have read as much as possible but im not sure if the same applies to custom roms in general.
So far im thinking i have to put the custom rom on my phones sd card and then flash it via clickwork mod, however i have read something about doing a nandroid backup and data wipe bdfore flashing the rom. Ideally i would hope somebody can do a quick step by step guide explaining the above, and tell me weather this applies to custom roms in general?
Im very grateful for any help, thx in advance
Once you have rooted your phone make sure you have enabled usb debugging.
Go to settings, applications, development, enable usb debugging.
Then connect phone to pc, and transfer rom.
Then boot into recovery mode, to do this switch phone off, then press vol up, home and power.
Then wipe data, wipe cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
Then go to install zip from sd card, select zip, click ok and cwm will take care of the rest
Thx so much for the breakdown of how to do this, will this cause me to loose all data?

Yes you will lose all data.
It's worth doing a backup, you can use titanium backup.
Download it from the market.
I don't tend to back things up, as contacts etc are synced and backed up with my google account.
And I just redownload my apps.
You'll find some roms don't wipe data, but it's generally advisable to always wipe before flashing any rom, and therefore backup if you have a lot of data.

Yeah pretty much the same for every rom.
It's always worth reading the first post in every thread though, as I came across a rom recently that could only be flashed using odin, I think it was litening rom.
But if not 99% of custom roms can be done the way I described
And I know what you mean about needing things step by step, these forums seem very complicated at first, the best advice I can give you is to read read read.
When I first joined earlier this month everything seemed so complicated but it's fairly straight forward when you get used to it.
I now flash about ten times a day, but I have a problem lol

Sorry for the delayed reply, lol jeez 10 times a day, i get how it can be so fun and addictive though, trying custom roms and themes etc.
As i said though im new to android, came from an iphone 4 which i always used to jailbreak.
And yeah i know what you mean, im doing my best to read as much as i can, but here on xda things move so fast and theres that many different things to learn it gets scary hehe.
Im still to try and flash a rom, i was going to try villainrom first, but do you have any other suggestions on which devs/roms i should check out, seeing as all this is new i might aswell get some practice in....
I do have another quick question, when i connect my fone via usb, which folder do i put the zip rom file into, is it External SD?
Anyways thanks again for your help, really appreciated!
EDIT* got it sorted!
Yeah ten times a day isn't an exaggeration either lol
I find what happens is I flash a rom, then a dev releases an update for another rom then I flash that, then I flash a different modem, then I find another rom, then another update and the cycle continues
You said you sorted it, but the rom zip file just goes in the root of your internal memory.
It's not overly important as you can find the file through cwm anyway.
As sometimes I'll download a rom through my browser and then it goes to the downloads folder.
But if I download it on my pc, I will just transfer the file to the root of my internal memory on my phone.

Yeah thanks again i managed to get it sorted i guess i overthink things sometimes, but i followed your guide above and now im running villainrom
had to do a bit more reading/asking on the backup/restore front, knowing what the diff between nandroid/titanium is etc, and how and which to use to restore.
Also you mentioned above about backing up your contacts with google, i tried to do that but couldnt seem to, how did you manage it? as i cant restore contacts from my windows pc via kies right? now that im rooted with a custom rom.
Anyways thx again for the help pal, you've been awesome!
Hi all. Thanks for taking the time to look and possibly help me out.
So I've had my thunderbolt since mid April. I rooted it promptly after opening and things were great.
I want to expand out and try CM7. From all i've been reading, i'm completely confused. I'm hoping i can get some pointers on what i need to do. From what i can tell i have to download the CDMA and LTE Radios and then flash them (seperately?)
from gu1dry TB Radios post updated 9/24
I will then have to copy the zip onto the root of the SD card. I will then rename one of them to PG05IMG.zip. i then reboot the phone, holding the Vol- button, go to Hboot and follow the instructions to update. Once the phone reboots, rename the zip to something else and change the other radio to the PG05IMG.zip and repeat.
Next, i have the CM7 download (from slayher, updated 10/2)
which i then copy to the SD card, rename to the PG05IMG.zip and do the flash thing. and then rename.
FInally i have to install the google apps (from the link in slayher's post again) but i'm unsure of how to do that.
If anybody could help me out, i would appreciate it.
thanks.
Your steps for flashing the radios is correct; however, ROMs and the GApps packages are flashed in recovery (clockworkmod recovery, twrp, etc).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484
As for the radio installation you are correct. One thing different is you don't have to flash them separately. You can flash together unless there is a reason you want to match different cdma with the lte radios.
This is the proper steps for flashing the rom from start to finish.
First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Thunderbolt, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Instructions are available here.
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
Optional: Install the Google Apps addon package.
If you are not familiar with the flashing or terms of nandroid continue to read or maybe Google some youtube videos.
Thanks for the help.
I have rooted my phone, but kept the Sense ROM loaded. I have Rom Manager/CWMR (5.0.2.1)
The radios i downloaded came seperately, one for the CDMA, one for LTE. how do i combine them? can i just pull out both zips and rezip as 1 file? then do the install?

Yes. The new radio that you flashed won't work on your current stock rom but should work on the roms you mentioned that you weren't getting a signal on before. As I said, in your case you will need to change the radio to get a signal with the roms you are flashing but it will probably break the current stock rom you are running.
I just wanted to say thank.
I now have CM7 on my TB, along with the apps. I've flashed to the 2.11 radio and things look good so far.
THanks for all the help everyone
First off let me start by saying I just rooted my EVO 3d. Yes I'm a noob to this whole thing! I have to say I'm hooked on this though very cool! I was successful with the root, I used the HTC method to root the phone.
I then installed TWRP.
I installed the Olympus Trinity XE rom.
Here is my question
I see that there is an update to this rom do I have to reinstall this whole ROM and and set my phone all up again or can I just update with the new version and keep all of the settings on my phone? example: when i installed the new ROM I had to set up my mail and all applications again. Maybe there is a step I'm missing and I may not be providing enough info like I said I'm a noob right now so all help would be appriciated.
Thanks
Most likely you just need to flash the new rom over your current without wiping and starting over. Just be sure to backup first just in case. Usually the thread with the update will say whether you need to wipe or not.

Yea, it really all depends on the ROM dev and the changes they've made between ROMs. They should let you know whether or not you'll need to wipe "data" partition which is where all your settings for mail and all other applciations are stored.
If you don't have to wipe data, usually you don't between updates of the same ROM, then all your settings will stay in tact which makes the updating process much easier.
Many times, when switching between ROMs, you'll need to wipe the data partition and re-do all the settings.
Personally, I usually flash w/o wiping and if I have issues, I might go back and wipe or run fix_permissions script. But these are definitely more advanced steps so I wouldn't recommend the process.
In all cases though, always make a nandroid as it can save much time and effort! Good luck!

On a side note, the links quoted above don't work and for future reference you can attach a link back to the original post you're quoting...not a big deal. But after seeing my app, Flash Image GUI, mentioned, I was a little curious!
The steps look correct and follow the general pattern when loading all ROMs and most kernels. If you're currently using the ROM and you're only flashing an "updated" version of the ROM, then you shouldn't need to wipe /data, at minimum though I'd suggest wiping /data/dalvik-cache and /cache.
BUT, the ultimate answer lies with the ROM developer as only they know for sure, what files were changed and how they were changed. Best to post up the question in the specific ROM thread and I'm sure either the developer or somebody familar with their work will be able to provide a more specific suggestion!
Hope that helps!
Thanks Great feedback! Sorry about the links too. I purchased and used your tool last night and it seemed to update the kernel to AnthraX-CMDA-Sense-Stock v2.6.38.6 but it did not seem to update the ROM? In the developers post he refers to using your method to flash the ROM. I followed your instructions to the T and did it twice but it seems like it did not update the ROM. In addition I can't post to the thread yet because I'm new to XDA and need ten post before I can submit to that thread.

My application, Flash Image GUI, only loads the kernel portion of the ROM. Due to limitations of the OS, not able to overwrite files which are currently in use the ROM/System portion of the ROM .zip file can't be loaded while currently using the OS.
The ROM .zip file needs to be flashed from the custom recovery in order to load the system portion of the ROM.
From your feedback it sounds as if you've only completed half of the process, loading the kernel. To complete the other half, you'll need to flash the exact same ROM file from the custom recovery.
Hopefully that makes sense! Appreciate the support!

From your feedback it sounds as if you've only completed half of the process, loading the kernel. To complete the other half, you'll need to flash the exact same ROM file from the custom recovery.
Hopefully that makes sense! Appreciate the support!

By that you mean flash the whole rom again?

I did follow the complete process but it still did not update. Looking at going to another Rom.
Any suggestions on Kernel and Rom to use?
