Need help new to Android - XPERIA X10 Android Development

Hi guys
I'm a noob when it comes to android and rooting. I wanted to know if I root my x10i can I go back to standard firmware if needed? And can I keep timescape?
I'm from South Africa and we have not received any firmware updates. I tried debranding and didn't like all the extra stuff I got in the install so I went back to my old firmware. If I root what happens to firmware updates? I understand the benefits but as I said I'm new so I don't really know what to do with a rooted phone.
Thanks any feed back will be appreciated
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

you can keep what you what and restore to unroot state .... but if you are new to android or linux DONT root you can bring the os to an unbootable state....

Is there no way back if I brick it?
How can I get enough info to know what to do. I'v neva used linex.b4
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

After rooting, you can go back to standard firmware the same way you did it after debranding.
From my understanding, if you update firmware normally you'll lose root. Otherwise, you'd have to update to the newest 'rooted' firmware as posted on XDA if you want to update.

Thanks man that really clarified alot. Do u think its worth it if I go for a root for the time being since there's no updates in my country
Thanks guys

If your firmware is really old (click left button>settings>About phone and read the build number at the very bottom, if it ends in 14 or 16 it is the older firmware) It seems worth it to update. Though apparently, the newest root method version (gives you firmware ending in 023) doesn't seem to be the best in battery life. You may want to stick with the link for 'OLD VERSION 1' in the guide (the link's crossed out, but you can still click it to download the files) that will give you firmware ending in 020 which I think gives better battery life.
Only prob is, flashing causes all your settings and apps to go away. So backup your messages and contacts and things. Your SD card doesn't get wiped, but the phone does.

I do have r14, that's y I wanted the update cz I know that 23 is out in other countries. I'll try the root and save my old files so that I can revert if I have a problem later on.
And in case off bricking is there a way to undo it?
Thanks
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Real 'bricking' means the device is DEAD.
I had a problem where my phone gave an exclamation mark logo when booting, and thats all it did. I went through debranding (reflashing) again, and it worked after. So I guess if you get stuck, just reflash.

Ok great, as long as I can fix it if there's a problem I'll try it. Anyway thanks a lot. I really appreciate all the help and the quick replies. There's alot of stuff I still don't understand but I'll check the other posts if I don't get anything I'll put something up.
Thanks again

Rebranding X10a /w X10i firmware back to X10a

Hi guys,
I recently saw happyandy93's posting about being able to flash his X10a phone running X10i firmware back to using X10a firmware. Here's his reply when I asked him how us mere mortals can do fix this as well. I've not tried this yet, but I he says this should work and it worked for him apparently.

yeah np.
if you want to post this in a thread that'b great i don't have tha much time but i'll quickly let you know the steps.
so first thing first head over to this site,
http://www.omnius-server.com/news_omnius_v0_03
make an account for the software and once the software is installed add your account information under "settings > server settings".
now thats the first step, the second is to get the correct firmware in your case it'b this decrypted rom:
http://hotfile.com/dl/43225669/598add6/a_WWE_R1FA014_DEK.zip.html
once that is downloaded extract the phone.zip and the android_xx.zip from that archive into a place where you know you'll find it.
head back into the software, and select identify, than follow the instructions it gives you. once it is identified, boot the phone back up into android. than click flash, choose the two roms:
http://img203.imageshack.us/i/flashy.png/
phone.zip goes into the "application box" and the android_xx.zip goes into the cusomization file.
hope this all works for ya, if you have any problems let me know.

I for one would like to see which method he is using. Ive tried some others with no luck thus far.

search the x10 general forum, the method to do it is in there somewhere. next time please do a search =\
You guys may not know, but the method that was already on the forum did not work, because the files that were provided are outdated now.
This is the new method that works to rebrand your X10 either to X10i or X10a original firmware.
Ya actually there are two previous methods and neither of them work anymore due too, from what i understand, the latest update to SEUS. However the second link for the dowload via hotfile on this method is dead. I get "Error 404". Would appreciate a reupload.

Fixed link. Sorry, I just copied and pasted it.
Thanks pally777. I will be rebranding and then debranding with the correct firmware in the next day or two. This method essentially wipes you phone clean and then reinstalls, rather flashes the generic x10a firmware....right?

That's how I understand it. I've started up the flashing tool and it looks pretty straight forward to use, but I've not done this yet.
There is a risk that it may not work, but then it seems Andy has gotten it to work and it seems the developers doing the rooting are also using this tool.
Xperia x10i firmware?
Hi!
Pls, could you tell me where can i get x10i decrypted rom firmware?
Thanks a lot!
You can download them in this forum in the decryted x10 roms thread.

Thanks so much
Thank you soo much ! I had a X10i @ SO-01B and I can tell you it works flawlessly, you saved me money from going to a store and getting it fixed there !
Glad to hear it works! I will probably do this when the Android 2.1 comes out for our phone... otherwise, no point in me going back to X10a firmware for now.
Anyone who has done this, which files from the unziped Android and Phone zip files do you have to put into the Omnius application? Im assuming the .sin files are important, but what about the xml document file, update file, metadata movie file, and there is a .ta file in there too? Little more specifics before I attempt this please. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Ok it worked for me. After you're done and start up the phone for the first time it takes a while for it to get going there. I was getting a bit nervous (might have peed a little) but then it started up and ill have to admit I was glad to see the "Rogers" branded startup screen. Thanks happyandy and pally777. Most appreciated. Oh, and just get rid of all the panicy PM's I sent you
K. Now that ive successfully rebranded to x10a I get my rogers startup page and everything seems fine with the phone. However i was hoping to debrand again (with the right fw or course) but pc companion stops when trying to install the update service. I get an error. SEUS works fine however. Is it possible to debrand using SEUS instead of pc companion?
Glad to hear that everything works! I might do this when they release X10a Android 2.1, because I'm liking the X10i firmware for battery life. Hopefully, I can still follow this process then to re-brand!
As for debranding, I used SEUS and not PC Companion. If you follow the same method that Lollylost posted, it should work. Just that the folders you'll be putting the files in are found in the SEUS folder instead of the PC Companion folders.
Many thanks. I finally got to work and im happily debranded again with the newest X10a firmware. Thanks again for the help. One question though. When the 2.1 update is released will i be able to update now that i am debranded?

it can be done easily with flash / unbrick tool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793
also you can update to latest R1FB001 firmware
Yes thanks again for getting me off in the right direction Jerpelea. I have successfully flashed R1FB010 to my X10a and it seems to be running fine. had to add the APN settings manually but no problem. Just curious if you have any way of getting R2BA016 (released in China), or have heard of anyone using R2BA020? Some are talking about it on some other forums, although there is some speculation as to whether or not it actually exists. Just curious
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-x10/87354-r2ba020-out.html
im planning on rebranding my x10 back to x10a. if i use this method will it delete all my info and data? should i back up my data? how do i back up my phone? thanks for the help, greatly appreciated!

OTA ICS with root?

Very sorry if this is a stupid question.
My Dad has a SGS2. I rooted it for him, and installed SpeedMod Kernel for him (way back in October)
He is currently running 2.3.4.
The ICS OTA / Kies or whatever, is coming soon.
Will he still be able to upgrade his phone whilst rooted?
Will the update perform successfully?
Will he lose data?
I'm asking because on other devices (HTC), if you perform a official update when you are rooted, it results in a bricked phone!
Thanks!

Not sure myself to be honest but the best thing to do is wait till you read from here that the official roms have been released through KIES. Then unroot your dad's phone and then feel free to upgrade then once you are unrooted and back to official stock firmware.
If you're still running stock firmware, you should still be able to get Kies upgrades. Obviously if you upgrade via Kies your phone will be unrooted as a stock kernel will overwrite your existing kernel.
If you find you are unable to get Kies updates, you will have to flash stock firmware back on to the phone as suggested by my learned colleague, Mr Suarez, before you can upgrade via Kies.
Any upgrade via Kies shouldn't result in loss of data unless you get a message before you begin the process that says you will lose data. Tho obviously backing up anything/everything important before upgrading is obviously recommended.
I see you're looking for ironclad guarantees about a couple of things, and frankly, when you start running non-stock firmware on your phone you should expect these to go out the window, i.e there aren't any (and even when you are running stock nothing is absolutely guaranteed).
Better not to tempt fate IMHO.
Many thanks for the replies fellas!
I appreciate it
Thanks for tips!
Yeah, I guess I'll do a NANDroid backup too...
TBH, I don't think my Dad is too bothered about being rooted on ICS, so it doesn't matter if he loses root.
On Gingerbread now, he doesn't use many root apps, apart from SetCPU and adfree.
But thanks for the helpful advice guys!
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
OK, sorry for the bump.
My Dad is still running the same setup 2.3.4 & SpeedMod kernel. The kies isn't detecting the phone...
But today he got the OTA notification to update ICS directly on his phone.
Is it safe to do it? So the update will override the SpeedMod kernel, but the phone will still boot and work fine? Not bothered about losing root - just want to know the upgrade will be successful.
Anyone can clarify please? I've done a NAND back up to be safe. the worse for worse - do i just restore the backup?
P.S - I have CWM on it - will that effect it?
Can't say, but should be ok, worst case you cab flash back using Odin if something happens.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Didn't work for me.
I had flashed the leaked release of ICS onto my phone and so when the official release came out I went straight to the OTA update (I'm on O2 in the UK) And the there was no available update (However my Dad also has the S2 and it wasn't there for him either).
So I tried the kies software to only find it gave me a message saying my phone wasn't supported/update not available for phone. It did however allow my dads stock firmware to be.
Hope that helps and you might have better luck but it will remove any root you have because I'm pretty sure it also updates the Kernel.
Thanks a lot guys! I used ODIN to flash the latest ICS version - all good now! He is unrooted, but still had CWM, so can he still receive future OTA's and make NANDroids?
You need root in order for CWM to work and for you to make a backup. Here is my guide to rooting your phone again. Very simple: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625184

Yes, when you update your phone you would have lost root and CWM. Just use the guide I posted above to regain root and CWM so your dad that can make his NANDroid backups.

How to get rid of OTA update without installing it?

A bit of a nooby question, but I've never come across it or had to do it before.
I know I could flash a custom ROM but nothing quite stands out just yet, waiting for S3 USA release. There should be a lot more action on the ROM side then.
But at the moment I'm on stock, rooted and woke up with an update on my phone yesterday. From what I've read there's 2 updates 1 after the other and 1's a new kernel. I'd rather not update and root again if there's a simple way of removing the update e.g. like say delete a file from somewhere. After all my phone's running 100% as is.
Anyone know the answer? Its bugging me now, you can only perspone it for 3 hours at a time.
If I don't get rid of it by tomorrow I'm going to reaserch if i can just update over a rooted stock ROM. Find out about the new kernel build make sure I can root after updating and reluctantly update.
Thanks in advance
Marc

I have the same problem and can't get rid of the OTA update available message, if you find a solution then please post.

download the 'update' from sammobile.com it's the LF2 rom, install with mobile odin and tell it to keep root.... problem solved
I just used titanium backup to delete the updater. Seems to be working fine for now.

Rather open-ended question because the correct firmware is going to vary depending on what you want to do. For instance, do you wish to revert to a stock ROM? Do you want to be as up to date as possible? Are certain features important to you?
I personally don't recommend going back to stock, but to go forward and get a custom gingerbread ROM. Check the development forum for four good ones: Longhorn 2.9.1, DSC 1.2, Cyanogenmod 7, and MIUI.

no need to revert to stock then... streakdroid 1.9 is the best for 2.2.2... so whats the point on going back to stock...? all stock are not optimized at all and have many hidden and useless application in it...
last time i tried using the deodexed stock but still it is not enough and does drain the battery too... custom rom is way better...
but if you insist on going stock.. i am not stopping you.. do what ever you want.. also updating to stock gingerbread such as olleh 407 has its own problem too...

I see from other posts that you are going to put 407 on the device and with this post why you're going that route is clear. Factory reset isn't required prior to flashing because flashing the ROM itself will wipe everything. What is required is that the stock recovery image for 407 be placed on the device before attempting to flash the ROM. Otherwise it won't work. I'm not going to go into detail on how to change the recovery image because there are sticky posts galore that have all the relevant info. A good thread to look at is in Streak 5 Android Development, titled "Everything you always wanted to know about the Streak but were too busy bricking it".

The country you are in and the carrier you are using do not matter when it comes to flashing a Streak ROM. All that matters is whether the region of the recovery matches the region of the ROM you are installing. Thus, for 407, you would need a region 14 recovery as 407 is a region 14 ROM. Unlocked Streaks purchased direct from Dell had their own region, 00. To flash one of those ROMs, e.g. 360, you would need a region 00 recovery.
I hope that clears things up.

Next month I heard talk about samsung releasing the kit kat update 4.4 to this phone correct me if im wrong. But if that's the case I would love to revert back so I can receive it inless you know of other ways of getting it other than installing custom roms....witch im not comfortable doing....I already messed up my phone in the process of rooting doing the ad block app....which then when I uninstalled it. I couldn't connect to the google servers.....so I had to go back and edit the host file and got it working finally but now I just want to remove this recovery I mean it seemed like a good idea at the start and I know a lot of people say it's amazing which indeed it is but I want to update my rom I know people say do complete wipe and install the stock rom and that should remove it but I'm iffy on the subject because I don't want to brick my device if it doesn't agree with something. I'm not all that new to rooting I had a coolpad quattro which I rooted in the past **** phone btw don't ever buy it. As well as my first galaxy 1 from verizon and a galaxy aspire. but im having problems trying to understand and avoid bricking my device because I haven't even finished paying it off and it's 400 dollar device plus interest.....:crying::crying:
I just wanted to root not get clockworkmod recovery.....dammit fml....
Guess nobody wants to help?

You can pull the stock recovery from the this factory firmware.
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-T999N
EDIT: Here is the link to just the stock recovery image itself... http://d-h.st/XDe
Just delete the .MD5 extension to unzip the tar file. Not sure why that is
there.
The above firmware would have been about a 1gig download... doh!
So this should work? How much of a guarantee that this will? I don't wanna mess up do any professional help would be awesome. I hear this is a great community but I just want reassure like since I've been rooted and done stuff will that soft brick or hard brick my device? 2i appreciate the help I'm just scared and can't afford this so called jig.

You sound really stressed but it also sounds like you've done nothing but post here for answers.
YouTube my friend.
Also... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613
Also...you could wait and download a bloat free version on XDA.

I'm a bit stressed not but not really concerned as far as things go the phone runs fine. As far as YouTube goes I can't find anything about this phone its relatively new from metro but I know the 4.4 update comes out next month. And as I've seen it's better correct me if I'm wrong. But if nobody can help me I'll stick with what I have. It's just mind racking because I know so much about computers and it's easy to fix a pc as far as these phones go they are like a computer or not all that new to Linux but this a lot different.
